File:Cmbox notice.png (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by David Levy (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

This file does not seem to be so widely used as to require a local copy for protection; moreover the Commons file it shadows is upload-protected b/c it's widely used across projects. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:51, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This file doesn't seem to be used anymore in sensitive locations (the system message it appeared in was deleted and MediaWiki:Gadget-legacyToolbar.js seems to draw from the Commons file, which is protected several times) and the underlying Commons file is protected several times. This file appears to be redundant to the underlying Commons file (which is protected several times) and isn't used in any sensitive location I can see. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:57, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bit of a test case here - this file is supposedly hosted locally b/c it's used in the system message MediaWiki:Gadget-featured-articles-links.css. Except that that system message actually uses the upload-protected file on Commons. Instead our file is used on MediaWiki:Gadget-featured-articles-links, but do we really need a fully protected local file when the Commons one is already protected? It's not a very prominent system message. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:06, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: I think the rationale for having a protected local file is that it acts as a backup in case something happens to the Commons file. Commons isn't always coordinated with local projects, and things could break if the Commons file is moved or deleted. Ixfd64 (talk) 16:35, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I know that this is the rationale, but that's why the Commons file is protected (other projects use it in their system messages) and I don't think anything has ever happened to these. Less common than folks having to edit the local file, anyway. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 19:17, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
