Rather annoying wikipedia bug[edit]

Go to Microsoft - if you click edit on "Antitrust problems" or any of the sections after it, it edits the section AFTER the one you want to edit, and if you click edit on "External Links" then you get a blank edit box and if you hit save it it to the end of the article! It might have something to do with the embedded HTML comments I'm using but I'm not sure. --Ryan Norton T | @ | C 05:12, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

Crap, sorry I forgot to respond Ryan. I saw that bug, the counter must be off as you'll see in the URL it'll say edit&section=30 or whatever... That's the only time I've seen that happen. If its still happening, report it to wikisoftware developer, Tim Starling. Until then just edit the entire thing rather than sections. Redwolf24 08:36, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
No problem - I put a message on Tim's talk message shortly after you responded --Ryan Norton T | @ | C 03:31, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

Family Guy Song[edit]

Account use - Suggestions[edit]

Dear Sir,

  • Hi, I'm Essjay. Red is on vacation and asked me to answer questions for him.

I am the 'best ever IP user without an account', as you called me with much appreciated Canadian flair.

  • Actually, he's American (US), Canadian, and Brazillian!

While I DO consider creating an account, I would first like to clear up one remaining concern : once I have created one, do I have to make all further contributions using it, or can I still choose to make some contributions anonymously, or create a second account, if that is technically better?

  • You should only use one account at a time. If you choose later to use a new account, you can do so by having your account renamed. Using multiple accounts is prohibited by Wikipedia:Sockpuppet and may result in the secondary accounts being blocked. This is because some users use multiple accounts in order to sway votes (i.e., they create ten accounts which each vote their way, hoping to skew the results thier way).

I have already experienced that not every Wikipedian is as objective and broad-minded as I try to be, a few even abusive vandals (the price we pay for such an open system, I know) so I don't want to open the flood-gates for pointless bickering when contributing on more controversial matters, which yet should not be avoided in an encyclopaedia.

  • Yes, vandalism is a problem, and some users are less mature than others. However, the Wikipedia community in general is skeptical of edits by IP addresses. (Since most vandalism comes from IPs.) By signing in, you avoid having every edit scrutinized (not to suggest that some won't be, but you are less likely to have them all scrutinized) and you gain a higher threshold of "assume good faith." (i.e, We are more likely to do a wholesale revert of content added by an IP if we suspect it is bad faith; we are far more likely to leave content and ask for sources from a registered user.)

By the way, would me contributions under my present anonymous IP (it doesn't seem to have been used be anyone else, save an oversight) the appear under the account pseudonym, either automatically or optionally?

  • No. Reassignment of contributions was once performed, but is no longer. The only way contributions are reassigned is if they are from one account to another account (as described above). Ip to account moves are no longer performed.

If you can reassure me in this matter, all that separates me from life as an account holder is coming up with a pen-name.

  • I hope you'll decide to join us in the land of the logged in. Logging in also conveys certian benefits.

As I read you are an administrator, maybe you can also answer or foreward questions and suggestions of a more general, technical nature, such as the following.

  • I'm an admin too, so I'll keep answering.

Naturally I fully understand if for practical reasons it is not realistic to do anything about these. But wouldn't we be happy puppies (well you a RedCub, I suppose) if we'ld had helped make the Wiki-system even more attractive?

  • We all try our best!

-Would it be possibly to include an automatic spelling checker in the Edit and Preview modes? The IMDb (on film and TV) does, and it seems to work perfectly. This could avoid lots of unnecessary errors and reedits.

  • This has been suggested before, and the developers have informed us that it is not a possiblity for a reason I cannot remember at the moment.

-As clicking the labels of the various pages concerning an article can be rather slow in response, I imagine because the servers are somewhat overcharged, it might be nice to avoid some idle History-visits by mentioning the date (possibly even the user) of the latest edit on the clickable page label.

  • I doubt it's server overload; I never have any delay unless I'm using dial-up. Listing the last user to edit might be a useful feature, and if you have any javascript experience, you can program the software to do this automatically by editing your monobook.js settings (only for logged in users). If you don't have javascript experience, there are several knowledgeable users and a fledgling WikiProject that can help you do this.

-This may be the most tricky one. On the all to frequent occasions the Wikipedia server disconnects me (and this shuts down all my open Internet connections, even on other sites) I find that not only the edits I was working on can get lost (not all, the debugging options sometimes prevents this), even previously executed and displayed changes can then fail to get entered in my User Contributions record.

  • My guess is that it is your ISP disconnecting you, as there is no way for our page to affect your internet connection. This is a common problem with dial-up service; if you have dial-up, perhaps you might want to investigate the wonders of DSL/Broadband.

-While I am personally at doubt if it makes sense to maintain the strict separation between Wikipedia and Wiktionary which in our virtual medium is not required by physical restrictions as in the printed equivalents, rather then simply have appropriate type sections under one lemma, as long as we do I can only suggest to coordinate the two systematically.

Thus it would be good to have an automatic link whenever the other has an article of the same name.

And the Search function could also ideally list results from both, separate or mixed.

  • Because Wikipedia & Wiktionary are separate sites, they do not have common search (although you could probably establish this using a search engine like Google.) Templates already exist to link to other Wikimedia projects that have related articles, see Wikipedia:How to link to Wikimedia projects.

Yours sincerely,

A Flemish historian and civil servant,

Hye Redwolf, if you have time, wouldn't mind some advice. Looking at Test_(student_assessment), it is not written from a NPOV at all. I'm going to try to change it to make it more balanced. Attack of the Show Wiki[edit]

Redwolf,

Please unlock the AOTS Wiki page. Their experiment will be ruined if nobody can actually edit the page. If stuff gets deleted, that's okay; even though it's "lame", it's still the true nature of the beast. Let people do what they will, they'll still be able to plow through the history and see how the experiment "evolved".

Thanks.

It was protected because of Vandalism, such as we'd have to revert past and even lose legitimate ideas. Now that doesn't happen, and any new ideas can be posted on the talk page to be moved to the main page. It will stay protected for now. Redwolf24 01:11, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

attack of the show skit script[edit]

i left a message on the discussion of attach of the show user page, but i wanted to personally message you also. my script was in option 8, it was called "hot coffee revisited" and now it is replaced by some power ranger thing. can you let me repost it or you can repost it?

here is my entry in its entirety.

scene starts with a grainy black and white film showing kevin in an old gangster suit from the 20's. he is sitting in a bar drinking a hard liquor of some sort and is all alone.

kevin: (inner monolouge) If I could go back to that day, I would have given it all up for her.

flashback to "that day", still black and white, not grainy, we see kevin (from a view seeing his face) sitting with a controller in his hand. he is obviosly playing a video game because we seem him grinning, moving his thumbs to press the buttons, and see the glow of the screen on his face.

kevin: (this time he actually speaks) ok, got to kill one more zombie(furiously plays the game) HA! i did it!!!

we then hear from the tv the voice of a female from the game

female: thank you, you saved me from the zombies, i am yours forever.

game voiceovering narrator: press "a" to initiate hot tea minigame

at this moment, we see kevin's thumb about to press with anticipation of the upcoming minigame filled with sex, when suddenly his girlfriend enters the room(in lingerie) and unplugs the video game, making the glow disappear(yes, kevin has a girlfriend in this scene).

kevin: NO!! I was just about to...beat the game(in a questioning voice because he didnt want to say "have sex with a game character)!

girlfriend: come on kevin, dont you want to come to bed?

kevin: (in a huff and upset) ok fine...

back to kevin in the bar, and grainy again.

kevin: (back to inner monologue) i'm so glad i broke up with my girlfriend, because now i can play hot tea all the time. (now speaking) What the hell am i doing here? i have to get back to my woman! here i come hot tea!!

(/end scene)

oops

You're a little late, but yes, I have. (in fact, I stole this before you were an admin *phew!*) I don't remember how long ago, but I'm glad you approve. I kept a list of contribs, and then I thought to myself: "Why do I need this?" As great as it is to artificially inflate ones edit count, it's also a bit dumb and amoral. I've been on semi-vacation for a while now, and havn't had the ability to raise edits as I once did. But rest assured, once I return, I'll be bigger than ever. Thanks for the note. -Sunglasses at night 22:42, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

I likely won't post here often, since my main interest lies in Jack Thompsn and the current situation that I'm sure you know about by now. Most admins don't want to delete something just hours after it was posted. Plus as for me I can't close it as I voted. Its my own policy to not close what I voted on unless the votes were unanimous. And the vote of the creator isn't worth more than anyone else's sadly, except for at say, VfD's on user pages... Redwolf24 08:47, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

In light of the fact that you're an admin, I'm giving in to your harassment. I'm taking a break from Wikipedia and your POV that I should not participate in discussions, even though I am being civil. You win, go have a parade. Goodbye. Agriculture 07:47, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

The fact that I'm an admin doesn't mean my POV is worth anymore than yours. We have conflicting POV's and I believe that you hounding every vote different from your own is rather uncivil, picture it this way: you're a campaigner for Bill Clinton in '96 and you're watching the voting booth... and every time someone voted for Dole you would run up to them and list all the pro's of Mr. Clinton. Votes should be left alone and not intimadated. By the way I hope you come back soon as you are a great editor, despite our conflicting points of view. Respectfully, Redwolf24 07:52, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
I hardly hounded every voter, as for coming back, doubtful. I am going to lurk for a bit, make sure some articles are fine, then leave entirely. It has come to my attention that the fact that you are an administrator does matter. I have witnessed admins pushing POV several times. In addition, the fact that the article in question was a forum for discussion and facilitating the forming of a consensus yet so many voted against it without even reading the page says something else. Wikipedia isn't about free speech, it's about censoring the wrong kinds of free speech. Wikipedia is not and will likely never be an encyclopedia. It's authority has already been questioned and the current move seems to be an ever increasing tide of vandals, and insertion of hard-core pornography which is defended as "free-speech" despite being possibly unencyclopedic. It would be one thing if dicussion on this topic and what was appropriate were encouraged as Wikipedia suggests they would be. The opposite is true however, and if you decide to try and stick up for free speech and discussion of these issues, moderators evidently harass you until you stop.
Well, as I said, you win, I'm stopping. Agriculture 08:01, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

Edit summary[edit]

Your edit summary at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/WikiProject Wikipedians for Decency in regards to my vote placement was uncalled for, admin. In all honesty, I kept getting locked out and I didn't know it mattered where I put my vote at. It is only my second vote on a Vfd. I'm usually too busy writing articles and fighting over NPOV at George W Bush.--MONGO 08:31, August 17, 2005 (UTC)

My apologies MONGO, I see you around so much that I thought you were a veteran. I apologize for that summary now... this whole VfD is causing me some stress, paired up with Agriculture's continued sarcasm. Really, sorry. Sincerely, Redwolf24 08:34, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
Ah more harrassment, FYI, I'm not being sarcastic, you'll note I'm not editing articles anymore, just a few talk pages while I wait on laundry. As I said before you win, and I mean it. I'm leaving for good after making sure a few other articles are stable. Agriculture 08:38, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
Your sarcasm would be referring to your delete vote. Redwolf24 08:41, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
Of which I am dead serious. I say it officially, I fully believe the reasons stated on my delete vote. Let that article burn. Agriculture 08:42, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
Strong Delete - A forum for discussion of policies or other forms of free speech obviously have no place on Wikipedia. War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. Agriculture 08:06, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
War is peace, Ignorance is strength, freedom is slavery? That seems more to push an argument rather than your actual point of view. Redwolf24 08:44, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
It's a quote from 1984, and directly tells to my opinion. I am dead serious, Wikipedia isn't a place for all free speech, just the right kinds of free speech. That is my opinion and why I strongly support deletion of the article. Agriculture 08:47, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

hey, thanks![edit]

Appreciate it! Antandrus (talk) 16:02, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

thank you[edit]

I replied to your note at User_talk:Sam_Spade#Wow_this_page_is_confusing_me..., and looked over your user page. We share an interest in music. I collect music, and am approachimg 30,000 mp3's. We like some of the same bands, like Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull. My favorite style is folk metal, but I collect any kind of music I like the sound of, which includes most forms of metal. Maybe we can discuss music sometime, or I can help you w an article. Cheers, ¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸ 20:03, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

Re: Your Vacation[edit]

Hello, Redwolf! I am glad you did have a good vacation. I was away too, that's why I haven't edited since last Wednesday and answered you about your vacation. -- Mike Garcia | talk 22:17, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
