I'm glad this page is here. I'll add some more specific information about how place-based education is distinct from related educational models. Japhyr (talk) 18:30, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What is place-based education?[edit]

Usually the opening sentence will define the subject. This just gives a long list of alternative names and says it is "an educational philosophy." That is uninformative. The rest of the article is not any better. The long quotation from Lane-Zucker is full of jargon and long-winded academic writing. I came to this article to learn what place-based education was, and after reading this I still have no clue.

Here is my stab at an opening sentence. Maybe someone that knows more on this topic can improve it.

Place-based education is an education philosophy that encourages learning from the culture and environment of the students' local community.
