Latin music covers of non-Spanish/Portuguese songs

@Jaespinoza:, @DivaKnockouts:, @Hahc21:, @Luisnh1210:, I've been struggling on how the scope of the project should handle Spanish/Portuguese covers of songs of another language. Examples include Ahora Te Puedes Marchar, Desde El Día Que Te Fuiste, No Me Ames, Vivir Mi Vida, Sólo En Ti, Toda La Vida. Popular songs, but not originally recorded in Spanish. I don't have a problem with covers when it's usually the only one, but it's when there's multiple covers I don't know how to deal with it. You have bachata covers of Stand by Me (song), I Just Can't Stop Loving You, and so forth, where it's covered by multitude of other artists. @Victor Lopes:, I'm sure there are popular Portuguese-covers of non-Portuguese songs in Brazil as well, so I would like your opinion on the matter too since you're the only member that I know of who is active with Brazilian music articles. So you what do guys think? Any limits on how Spanish/Portuguese covers should be handled or should any cover of either language be included? Erick (talk) 18:16, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Forgive me, Erick, I think I didn't get the central point. What do you mean with "how should this project handle Spanish/Portuguese covers of songs"? Leaflet For Wikiproject Latin Music At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

Genres

Are latin american bands that make Rock in Spanish part of this project? And genres such as Tango? I was invited to this project, but I would like to clarify that detail, to avoid misunderstandings. Cambalachero (talk) 02:45, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

@Cambalachero: Yes, Rock en Español bands (that includes the ones from Spain as well) are within the project scope. A rule of thumb I tend to use are the Latin Grammys and they have awards for Rock/Alternative music. Erick (talk) 02:56, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Sources for Baila Esta Cumbia (song)

Hello everyone, since Google news archive has been down for some time now, it would be helpful if anyone has access to any news article that has helpful information on "Baila Esta Cumbia (song)"; an article I'm actively working on. Thanks in advance, .jonatalk 16:36, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

@AJona1992:, you can still find some Google archives by searching "site:news.google.com/newspapers" on Google. I meantime, I went through Highbeam and it barely mentions anything about "Baila Esta Cumbia". On Questia, I found a mention of the song from the Selena Live! album. "Selena's opening number, a compilation of an up-tempo romantic piece, "Como el Flor," and "Baila Esta Cumbia" mixes pop vocalism, some quite free scatting, and a classic banda keyboard sound." (John Storm Roberts, The Latin Tinge: The Impact of Latin American Music on the United States, 2nd ed. (New York: Oxford US, 1999), 244, http://www.questia.com/read/100559829.) While going through El Siglo de Torreon, it seems that a compilation album called Baila Esta Cumbia by Selena y Los Dinos went platinum there (Source). You can go through Newslibrary from Newsbank and request articles you want to see at the Resource Exchange. I'll see if I can find anything else. Erick (talk) 18:22, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for looking Erick. For the Questia source is it saying that both Como la Flor and Baila Esta Cumbia were "up-tempo romantic piece"? and for the instrumentation component of the source is that a reference to both songs as well? For the platinum claim, I also stumbled upon this source where it claimed that an album sold 150,000 copies in Mexico. I changed the reference from it being the album selling that many to the song selling 150,000 copies, as I thought that's what the author mean't since there's no certifications for the album in Mexico. So I'm thinking of changing it back to "a compilation album of the same name was released in Mexico and sold 150,000 copies and was certified Platinum there" (if I should use the source as a RS)? Yes, the author was reviewing Selena Live!. And it seems to be the case. Looking up Baila Esta Cumbia by Selena y los Dinos brings up pictures of the album cover for the compilation album. Erick (talk) 18:36, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean. The compilation album called "Baila Esta Cumbia" was certified platinum in Mexico. AMPROFON didn't certify singles until 2009.

Tejano music task force

I would like to start a discussion for possibility of opening a Tejano music task force under the main Latin music project. The task force would focus on Tejano music (roughly 300 articles; and additional 300 more articles needing to be created). Best, .jonatalk 02:06, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

2014 Latin Grammy Awards nominations

It's been a few weeks since the official list of nominations for the Latin Grammy Awards of 2014 was announced. I've been mentioning some of them (particularly the Brazil-related ones) at the corresponding articles. It would be great if other members of this project could help adding information on the other nominations as well - there are 48 categories, each one with some five or six nominated artists. I've used the official list as a source (http://www.latingrammy.com/es/nominees - replace "es" with "en" for the English-language version), of course we can use other references, but that list is probably the best starting point. Hello. Yes, I have been updating some LG featured lists, but I am not using the Latin Grammy source, because they will change it after the award ceremony, thus, we have to change the reference. Thanks! Today I have created articles Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and Latin Grammy Trustees Award to match its regular Grammy counterpart. I will probably a create an article for Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame later. Like the Latin Grammys, they focus on Spanish and Portuguese music and I might create a category called "Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees" to match Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees, if it's completely okay. Proposal to add a guideline regarding capitalization of foreign-language titles

 – Following consensus, the project will use capitalization for titles Spanish- and Portuguese-language albums and songs found on English-language reliable sources as opposed to its native capitalization. Erick (talk) 17:06, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

@Jaespinoza:, @DivaKnockouts:, @AJona1992:, @Luisnh1210:, @Victor Lopes:, As most of you are aware, there's an ongoing issue regarding the capitalization of foreign-language works of art at the talk page for WP:NCCAPS because of what happened last week when a requested move was objected in favor of its native capitalization. The guidelines for the Albums and Classical projects state to use the native capitalization of a foreign-language for works of art (including recordings). More often than not, I see the guideline from Classical music project used in favor of a foreign-language work to use its native capitalization. But I know most of you object to that and prefer to use the capitalization found on reliable English-language sources. @Hahc21: Harold, I know you haven't been on Latin music articles lately, but given the amount of work you've contributed to Ricardo Arjona, I believe you should a voice on this as well. So if those projects can have a say on how they handle foreign-language works, then I say we should have a say on this as well. WikiProjects do not own articles so they're not allowed to force us to use their guidelines. Therefore, I propose we add our own guideline on this project regarding how we handle capitalization of Spanish- and Portuguese-language recordings in this project. Here's a suggested guideline:

  • "This project does not favor utilizing the native capitalization of titles for Spanish- and Portuguese-language albums and songs. Instead, usage of capitalization found in most English-language reliable sources is recommended. If there are too few reliable English-language sources available, then use the capitalization found on other foreign-language reliable sources instead."

Now I could've gone ahead and added this to the guideline already, but I'd feel more comfortable if I can have a consensus from the members of this project. Please state whether you support or oppose this guideline and if you oppose, please explain why. As for me, I support this guideline given that usage of capitalization found on English-language reliable sources has been preferred in most debates. Erick (talk) 21:19, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

Given that three days has passed without any objections and the support for the proposed guideline is unanimous, I will now added a guideline on the project regarding how we deal with foreign-language titles.   • Belated oppose -Had I known that this discussion was going on I would have opposed, I think this is a MOS issue, and I prefer the style used in high-MOS sources, like Rondon's Salsa book, Continuum and so on, to the low-MOS caps-crazy style used by Billboard. @In ictu oculi: You understand of course that a project's guideline are determined by the consensus of its active members right? I'm not saying you aren't allowed to join the discussion, but you must convince everyone else in this project why those sources take priority over other English-language sources. Sure, I'd like to think that other editors I've created enough Latin music articles to have a voice, I just don't look at this project Talk regularly, sorry, and you didn't ping me alongside the others above (no reason why you should). I've expressed my view on following hardback book MOS rather than Billboard MOS on many occasions in other places: I don't think Latin (or French) songs should be dragged around by a MOS more appropriate to English pop. I prefer George Torres Encyclopedia of Latin American Popular Music "His song "Plegaria a un labrador".. p.312 to Colin Larkin's Guiness MOS, and so on. I think it's more serious and reflects that Spanish doesn't generally capitalize. What we're doing here risks becoming a kind of Wikipedia Spanglish. Also I note User:Diego Grez "I have found myself in trouble several times because of pointless discussions on capitalization of titles."... that almost like a User being browbeaten by other English pop editors to use Spanglish titling, which isn't a great reason (no offence given I hope). @In ictu oculi: You may have created many Latin music articles, yes, but the above members have heavily contributed to bringing numerous articles to GA, FA, and FL. If those guidelines were required to be followed right now, that would mean moving over 100 articles which are GA and changing every mention of the song title in the article. That would be a daunting task and I doubt anyone of us would be willing to go all through all that trouble. I respect your viewpoint, but these editors have always preferred to use other English-language reliable sources and all but two of the users who supported the above guideline are native Spanish speakers (the two being me and AJona1992). I will say that I'm rather surprised I haven't gotten a reply from you on the NCCAPS talkpage though. Erick (talk) 00:15, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
Because your ping was misspelled, no problem. I don't know what I can say that isn't repeating. (1) to me it looks like Billboard Spanglish, or Franglish when applied to French songs, (2) the lead is more important than the title, and I believe the lead should be spelled as the real song title, and that having Billboard CAPS in the lead sentence for a Portuguese song etc. is just plain ugly. @In ictu oculi: Well that feeling of course isn't mutual with the above active members. You may not like it, but these members seem to prefer it. You can ask Javier how he feels about the whole deal for example. He's been contributing to Latin music articles and lists long before I have. Even though I am supporting my guideline, I am more a "go-with-the-flow" kind of guy and follows whatever the consensus wants. Erick (talk) 00:39, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
At the very least, it should be noted that what has been created here is not a Wikipedia:Guideline. What we see here is a Wikipedia:Local consensus: "Consensus among a limited group of editors, at one place and time, cannot override community consensus on a wider scale. For instance, unless they can convince the broader community that such action is right, participants in a WikiProject cannot decide that some generally accepted policy or guideline does not apply to articles within its scope." The guidance of any normal guidelines would supercede the result of this discussion. If you would like to initiate discussion on an actual guideline page to create such a guideline, that would seem to be an advisable next step. Dekimasuよ! 03:39, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
@Dekimasu: Oh I'm aware of that. As mentioned on my original comment, it's just that every time this issue gets brought up, the guidelines from the Albums and Classical music projects usually get brought up by someone as if they have the final say on everything. I never intended to supercede any policy at all. The only reason I brought up this discussion is to show not every editor wishes to follow the guidelines of what other WikiProjects say. @Victor Lopes: Oh yes definitely! Especially for Brazilian music, I read your essay on the Wikipedia systemic bias some time ago and I whole heartily agree with you. It's a problem here in this project too because majority of the users here (including myself) come from a Spanish-speaking country/background and I've had no luck trying to get users who might be interested in Brazilian to join this project nor I do know any Portuguese. Hopefully we can try getting more people who enjoy Brazilian music to join this for next year. Erick (talk) 18:30, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
I actually find it to be quite contradictory that we have so many descent articles on Brazil-relatd topics and (apparently) so few active Brazilian users like me. I don't feel too much pressure on making Brazil be as well-represented as the rest of Latinamerica is at this project, I did what I could with my favorite band Titãs and artists such as Nando Reis and Zé Ramalho, but of course, many other great Brazilian artists are still waiting for someone to dedicate some hours for them.
