Normalized frequency

Hi there, the linking you are putting in to filter articles for normalization to normalized frequency (digital signal processing) is not really correct. The sense it is being used in is as in normalization to a prototype filter. This is not really the same thing. I am going to revert some of these edits. SpinningSpark 01:00, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Sorry about that. I just stumbled on that orphan page and couldn't resist trying to help it out... :) Incidentally, now we have two problems: the page is still orphaned and normalized frequency is ambiguous. Do you think normalization to a prototype filter could be added to the normalized frequency disambiguation page? As for the orphan problem, that page seems to duplicate a lot of the material in Nyquist frequency, now that I think about it. I propose merging Normalized frequency (digital signal processing) to a section in Nyquist frequency and adding a redirect to that section to the normalized frequency disambiguation page.

For clarification, the reason all of this came up in the first place was my exploration of MATLAB digital filter commands for a sophomore-level Electrical Engineering course. The functions require the cutoff frequency parameter to be normalized, and the documentation didn't make it clear that the normalization factor was the Nyquist frequency, so my first instinct was to find out what a "normalized frequency" was. That's why I would like some kind of link drawn between Nyquist frequency and normalization. Unless MATLAB was simply being obtuse and this isn't actually a notable use of "normalized frequency", in which case it's not our problem and we should probably just delete the page. I can do all of this myself since you seem to be busy, but since you've got a lot more experience in the field I wanted to ask your opinion on what to do next. Apologies for not replying straight away, I have been offline for a few days. I agree that it would be sensible to disambiguate normalized frequency to prototype filter. The only problem with that is that the term is not actually mentioned in the article, making a dab link confusing. The whole prototype filter article is written from the point-of-view of scaling a prototype to a desired implementation, rather than taking a specific implemetation and normalizing it to a prototype. Normalizing can be viewed as the reverse process of scaling. Note that this applies to other parameters as well as frequency. However, it would be a small effort to add a sentence or two to that effect.

Not sure about merging normalized frequency (digital signal processing) with Nyquist frequency, while they are very obviously connected they are most definitely not the same thing. I don't have any strong feelings on it either way, but personally, I would tend to just add links to connected articles. If you are not able to immediately work it into the article text, you can always just add it to the "See also" section. In actual fact, that was the original purpose of "see also". Other connected articles in this group are, Nyquist rate, sampling rate and Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem.

By the way, I wouldn't set any great store on my experience. I am just somebody who was very comfortable in the stone age but is now struggling to understand how all this bronze technology is supposed to work.
