Practice Editing Here (Nov 15th in-class Wiki session work)[edit]

  • This is a place to practice clicking the "edit" button and practice adding references (via the citation button).
  • Edit #1: Amyloidosis
  • Edit #2: [1]

Task:

  1. Find a peer-reviewed journal article on PubMed. Practice inserting your citation in the above space using the "cite" tool
  2. Choose one "B-level" medical article on Wikipedia from the following list: https://wp1.openzim.org/#/project/Medicine/articles?quality=B-Class&importance=High-Class
  3. Practice editing live on Wikipedia by finding a typo in the text or improving the clarity/readability of a sentence by adjusting a few words in a sentence.

Assignment # 3- please post an anonymous copy here![edit]

Assignment 3: Wikipedia Page Improvement Plan[edit]

1.      Proposed Changes (3 marks):

Sentence 1:

Original Sentence: It is rare for the disease to appear before age 20, and it appears to be noticeably more common in males than females, especially over the age of 50, where the incidence of the disease (the risk per person in the population) does increase. The average age of onset is between 45 and 55 years of age for patients with patch and plaque disease only, but is over 60 for patients who present with tumours, erythroderma (red skin) or a leukemic form (the Sézary syndrome).

Proposed Change: It is rare for Mycosis Fungoides to appear before age 20; the average age of onset is between 45 and 55 years of age for people with patch and plaque disease only, but is over 60 for people who present with tumours, erythroderma (red skin) or a leukemic form (the Sézary syndrome). Mycosis Fungoides is more common in males than in females with the majority of people living with the disease being of Caucasian ethnicity.[20]

Sentence 2:

Original Sentence: The incidence of mycosis fungoides was seen to be increasing till the year 2000 in the United States, thought to be due to improvements in diagnostics.

Proposed Change: The incidence of mycosis fungoides was seen to be increasing until the year 2000 in the United States, thought to be due to improvements in diagnostics. This contrasts to a reported increase in incidence in the Netherlands between 2000 and 2020, suggesting regional trends.[21]

2.      Rationale for proposed change (3 marks):

Sentence 1

The changes to these sentences intend to increase clarity and detail regarding the incidence/patterns of Mycosis Fungoides. The original sentence focused primarily on the incidence by age, redundantly stating the increasing incidence with older age and the average age of onset, as well as a reference to the differences among sexes between these points. The proposed changes will first discuss the average age of onset and then describe differences among sexes separately to increase clarity. Further, information will be added regarding patterns among ethnic groups to provide readers with a more thorough epidemiological profile of people living with Mycosis Fungoides. The information for these changes was retrieved from a literature review recently published to the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.

Sentence 2:

This amendment is intended to add an international perspective to Mycosis Fungoides incidence in this article. Given that Wikipedia article has a health focus beyond the United States, this new information will make the incidence reported in the article applicable for those seeking more information on Mycosis Fungoides outside of the United States. This is otherwise and currently lacking in this article. This information comes from a peer-reviewed study conducted in the Netherlands.

3.      Area of controversy (if applicable) (1 mark):

Sentence 1

Some controversy exists regarding the patterns of Mycosis Fungoides between ethnic groups. Some literature suggests that the disease is more common among individuals of African-American descent; however, this literature is primary or based only on individual studies. Secondary sources and systematic reviews tend to agree that the disease is most common among Caucasian populations.

Sentence 2

N/A

4.      Critique of source (2 marks):

Sentence 1

The article selected is a literature review that was recently published to the Journal of European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. The authors report no conflicts of interest that would jeopardize the validity of the findings. The article is written by experts in the fields of oncology and dermatology with a comprehensive list of references from high-quality journals, articles, and peer-reviewed studies. The information retrieved from this article can also be supported by other secondary sources and systematic reviews.

One weakness of the article is that it reviewed literature gathered primarily from the United States which may introduce potential bias regarding patterns of the disease among ethnic groups. Some literature from other countries/continents was included which helps to increase the global relevance and external validity of the article.

Sentence 2

There are many strengths to this source, being that it is a recent peer-reviewed article that is instrumental in combining several primary sources related to MF incidence. This involves a recent study sample from 2019, with a robust longitudinal study design and database sample.

While one source from a single country, such as the Netherlands, may seem limited and controversial, it is justifiable in that there is a dearth in research and literature for this area of study, being MF. This source therefore helps contextualize that the incidence in MF may be reported differently by region, even if its limited in external validity.

5.      Article improvement (1 marks):

Suggestions posted to the talk page.

What to post on the Wikipedia article talk page (part of assignment 3)[edit]

  • This will also be covered on Nov 15th in class. Your group should use the below template to share an outline of your proposed improvements (including your new wording and citations). Article talk pages are not places to share your assignment answers. The Wikipedia community will be more interested in viewing your exact article improvement suggestions including where you plan to improve the article (which section), what wording you suggest, and the exact citation (Note: all citations must meet WP:MEDRS)
  • You will not be able to paste citations directly from your sandbox to talk pages (unless you are interested in editing/learning Wiki-code in the "source editing" mode). We suggest re-adding your citations on the talk page manually (using the cite button and populating the citation by pasting in the DOI, website, or PMID). You will have to repeat this process yet again when you edit the actual article live.
