History[edit]

The article was completely lacking any kind of history information, so I added some. It's very basic at this point, but I hope others will improve on it.

I thought the article had very interesting points. It was a little pieced together and could flow more. I would add more about the campuses. Such as, clubs & organizations, etc. There could also be more of a defined section on majors and minors, and the academic community at UNE . --Lnickerson1 (talk) 01:51, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed edits to lead[edit]

This is my first time requesting an edit so any guidance is appreciated. I would like to replace the introductory section with the following text:

The University of New England (UNE) is a private university with campuses in Portland, Maine, and Biddeford, Maine, USA, and a campus in Tangier, Morocco. UNE attracts internationally recognized scholars in the sciences, health, medicine, and the humanities. It belongs to a select group of U.S. academic institutions offering a comprehensive health education mission that includes programs in medicine, pharmacy, dental medicine, nursing, and an array of allied health professions. UNE is included in the 2016 edition of The Princeton Review’s Best 380 Colleges[2] guide on the basis of its high-quality academic offerings, optimal locations in Maine and Morocco, competitive cost, and size. It has also been recognized for its return on investment to graduates by Forbes[3] and PayScale.com[4]. It is ranked among the “Best Universities in the North” by U.S. News & World Report[5].

UNE’s six colleges combine to offer undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees. In addition to campus-based programs in the U.S. and Morocco, UNE offers online programs that enable students to earn graduate and professional degrees from anywhere in the world[6].

UNE is Maine’s largest private university and its leading supplier of health care professionals. It plays important roles in preparing students from throughout the United States for careers in the marine sciences[7], environmental science, business, education, and a variety of other fields. UNE’s College of Osteopathic Medicine is the only medical school in Maine[8], and its College of Dental Medicine is the only dental college in northern New England[9].

There is way too much POV and promotional language in your proposed edit for me to be at all comfortable with us using it. The very last sentence noting the medical and dental schools is the only sentence that I see that should be added to the current lead. ElKevbo (talk) 02:31, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed edit to introduction[edit]

Here is another try at updating the introduction with factual info and without POV/promo language. Please review.

The University of New England (UNE) is a private, coeducational university with campuses in Biddeford, Maine, Portland, Maine, and Tangier, Morocco. The Biddeford campus sits on 540 acres, the Portland campus on 40 acres, and the Tangier Campus on 3.7 acres. During the 2014-2015 academic year 10,371 students were enrolled in UNE’s campus-based and online programs.

UNE’s institutional history dates to 1831, when Westbrook Seminary opened on what is now the UNE Portland Campus. The UNE Biddeford Campus was founded in 1939 when College Séraphique opened as a high school and junior college for boys of Quebecois decent. In 1952, that institution became a four-year liberal arts college named St. Francis College. In 1978, St. Francis College merged with the New England Foundation for Osteopathic Medicine to become the University of New England. In 1996, the University of New England merged with Westbrook College.[1] In 2014, UNE opened a campus in Tangier, Morocco.[2]

UNE is the largest private university in the state of Maine[3] and the largest educator of healthcare professionals for Maine.[4] It is organized into six colleges that combine to offer more than 70 undergraduate, graduate, online, and professional degrees. Known predominantly for its programs in the sciences and health sciences, UNE also offers degrees in the marine sciences, environmental science, business, education, the humanities, and many other subjects. Its College of Osteopathic Medicine is the only medical school in Maine, and its College of Dental Medicine is the only dental college in northern New England.
