The churches on blood commemorate spots where the sainted members of Russian royalty were murdered. One such monument "on blood" (with bloody-red walls) is the 17th-century church in Uglich, marking the spot where Tsarevich Demetrius had been killed. A better known example is the Church of the Savior on Blood in St. Petersburg. --Ghirla ^-трёп- 08:20, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chronology[edit]

The present article states:

"In 1978, as the sixtieth anniversary of the execution approached, the Politburo decided to take action, declaring that the house was not of 'sufficient historical significance', and ordering its demolition. The task was passed to Boris Yeltsin, Chair of the local party, who had the house demolished in July 1977."

This reads as if the Politburo decision was made in 1978, the year after Yeltsin [on Politburo orders, i.e. Brezhnev's orders] had the house torn down (in 1977). Yeltsin is quoted by Robert K. Massie, in The Romanovs: The Final Chapter, as saying he regreted the destruction of the house but could not contradict Brezhnev.

The delightful Mr. Brezhnev also had the remains of the Königsberg Castle in Kaliningrad torn down - another act of architectural violence. Thanks, Lev!
