Hole 504B is the deepest hole drilled in the in-situ oceanic crust.[1]. Launched by the deep sea drilling project (DPSP), Hole 504B reached a maximum depth of 2111 mbsf (meters below seafloor). [2]

Other boreholes have drilled significantly deeper in the Earth's Continental crust (such as the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia which extends to 12.2km deep) because continental crust in generally substantially thicker than oceanic crust.

Location[edit]

Hole 504B is located in the eastern equatorial Pacific (1°13.611′N; 83°43.818′W)[3] between the Equador Fracture Zone and the Panama Fracture Zone. [4]

Legs[edit]

Hole 504B had eight legs in total (DSDP Legs 69, 70, 83, and 92 and ODP Legs 111, 137, 140, and 148) between 1979 and 1993)[5] many of which have scientific papers in which the findings were published. [6] [7] [8] [9]
