The d'Este family was an illegitimate branch of the House of Hanover descended from Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex and his first wife Lady Augusta Murray. As the couple married in contravention of the Royal Marriages Act 1772, their marriage was not recognised under the law.
