"Dorothy Molter" Article in Pennsylvania Project

She lived in Pennsylvania until 2nd grade, and everything that she is famous for is later in her life. In January a robot put a template for your project into the discussion section, all ratings were question marks. Suggestion would be to have someone take a look at it and decide if the template should stay and if so make the ratings. Sincerely North8000 (talk) 21:44, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

volcanism in Pennsylvania

My hobby is geology so everywere I work I ask my co-workers to bring me any unusual rocks from their farm or yard. I do this to better understand the area's geologic history. One of my co-wowrkers recently brought me several pieces of volcanic glass known as obsidian. I told her these must be "exotic", meaning they were transported here by glacier activity or someone may have dumped a box of western US rocks in that local creek. She said these rocks littered an entire small stream bed, so "exotic" may not be the proper description of their origin. I researched and found no mention of recent (less then 20,000 years ago) volcanism in Central Pennsylvania, and they may truly be from local volcanism, with or without an actual eruption. There are numerous sand mounds here, so "clean" volcanic glass is a possibility. I requested some more samples and noticed some had unruptured glass bubbles in them, more than eight millimeters in diameter. Bubbles in old obsidian would have ruptured with migrating water freezing and cracking the brittle rock. I made several requests for a personal visit to this location and was brushed off each time. If anyone should find obsidian in central Pennsylvania and wouldn't mind an ameture geologist looking over the area, please respond. have you considered that this might be "glass" form an old iron furnace? I have seen numerous pieces of glass slag from the old furnaces and it does resemble obsidian. Might be the source of your glass. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.186.80.1 (talk) 10:34, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Churchill (Area) High School Redirects to Woodland Hills

Why does Churchill High School / Churchill Area High School redirect to Woodland Hills? Churchill HS was a separate historical entity. To me it would seem more appropriate to have a 'past tense' article about the former high school and school district which would link to the current WH district and HS. Is it just a matter of somebody writing an article about CAHS? I was quite surprised to find almost no reference or historical context whatsoever in the WH piece especially since there is quite a lot of very important history which took place here.

Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 35,715 as of May 1. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Pennsylvania/Unreferenced BLPs. Currently you have approximately 193 articles to be referenced. Other project lists can be found at User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates and User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects.

Your assistance in reviewing and referencing these articles is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please don't hestitate to ask either at WT:URBLP or at my talk page. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 17:08, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

National Banking Act (1863) showing only PNC Financial Services Group

I believe a Wikipedia article should not give prominence to an individual profit-making organization, yet the overall impression from reading "National Banking Act", the 1863 page does this by listing only PNC at the bottom. I believe it should be removed until there was a determination made as to a list of banks that are relevant to illustrating or otherwise advancing one's understanding of the NBA. If there is another overriding consideration for this single listing, please let me know.

Thanks - the article is National Banking Act, and the reason the {{PNC Financial Services Group}} was at the bottom is that PNC was the first bank to receive a charter under the act. I'd done some massive work on this article to greatly expand it from a stub to its current fuller state, however its seriously lacking in imagery. I haven't been able to find a single free use image in Flickr, Google images, archives, anywhere of any of the creamery facilities. Any members in Harrisburg who might be able to go by the Hershey Creamery Company and take a picture of its headquarters, and maybe someone in Lower Swatara who could get a picture of that newer distro facility they opened there? Milestone Announcements

Announcements
  • All WikiProjects are invited to have their "milestone-reached" announcements automatically placed onto Wikipedia's announcements page.
  • Milestones could include the number of FAs, GAs or articles covered by the project.
  • No work need be done by the project themselves; they just need to provide some details when they sign up. A bot will do all of the hard work.

I thought this WikiProject might be interested. Ping me with any specific queries or leave them on the page linked to above. Thanks! - Jarry1250 (t, c) 22:12, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:15, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Townships in Pennsylvania

After discussing the matter with User:Ruhrfisch, I am taking the conversation here for more ideas. Apparently about a year ago there was a discussion about renaming townships [blank] Township, [blank] County, Pennsylvania because there are a number of duplicates. I strongly oppose this, as it is awfully redundant. It is also not mentioned in Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names), which advises settlements (such as townships) to be in simple [blank] Township, Pennsylvania form if there are no duplicates. ~EDDY (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 00:37, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Either way is fine with me. I just want them to all be the same. But I do see the benefit in naming the county with the township, it gives a more specific location for a place that isn't as well known as a town like Bloomsburg or a borough like Wellsboro. Dincher (talk) 21:18, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

New PAhistoric infobox template

For anyone interested in creating or editing articles on Pennsylvania historic sites or landmarks, I have created a new Pennsylvania historic infobox modeled on the National Registry of Historic Places infobox. This infobox is intended for state or local historic sites and landmarks that are not listed on the national registry, but are designated as historic by Pennsylvania and/or regional or local authorities and organizations. Like the NRHP infobox, the PAhistoric infobox will place color-coded banners signifying the historical significance of the subject at the top of the infobox, can handle both local Pittsburgh designations that are already thoroughly covered in Wikipedia articles/lists, and also provides the ability for other fully-customizeable local designations. There are many plant articles with Latin names of the species, which have the Wikipedia Pennsylvania template, but often no other state templates, even though they are found over a wide range of northeastern states, and even into Canada and as far south as Georgia. For example, Acer spicatum, a species of maple tree, has a Pennsylvania template, but is found from Canada to northern Georgia. My question is whether the Pennsylvania template should be applied to such articles at all. What do other editors think? --DThomsen8 (talk) 00:12, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Pennsylvania articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Pennsylvania articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

The unflattering photo that represents Dickson City on Wikipedia

I'm sure many agree that there are tons of beautiful places in Dickson City PA, but the photo that is representing our Borough to the world on wikipedia is less than flattering. It shows the world a gloomy photo of Main Street with tons of someones old trash piled in a front yard. Can someone please do something about this photo? The reputation of our town is well worth the effort. Wikipedia can be edited by the public but I lack the skills to do it myself. I am willing to take new photos myself if its needed. thank you :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Midvmom (talkcontribs) 20:05, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

I agree that the image should be changed, and edited the article for some general fixes. The license for the image looks legitimate, so I didn't remove it. We should go for a common scene, which does not change from week to week. All is One (talk) 14:35, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
The problem is that it is the only free photo of Dickson City on Wikipedia or Commons that I can find. Midvmom, sounds like you live in or near Dickson City - any chance you can take a better photo? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 16:03, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
Here is a link to all the free images labeled "Dickson City" on Flickr. Most of them are of places on or along US Route 6 in Pennsylvania, so I am not sure which are actually of Dickson City. If you let me know here I can upload them on Commons. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 17:04, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Collaboration with the Wine Project on Pennsylvania wine articles?

Hello! For 2011 the Wine Project is doing a new Wine Improvement Drive where each month we focus on an area of articles that relate to a particular theme. In January, we are are ringing in the New Year with New World wine, with a focus on the wines of the Northern Hemisphere-Canadian wine, American wine and Mexican wine. I am going by related projects to see if there is any interest in collaboration between this project and the wine project on the subject of Pennsylvania wine
Some suggestion on potential article creations/expansion include the main Pennsylvania wine article, Central Delaware Valley AVA, Cumberland Valley AVA, Lake Erie AVA, Lancaster Valley AVA, Lehigh Valley AVA Chaddsford Winery. And, of course, of HUGE help would be the upload of free use photos of Pennsylvania wineries, wines and wine regions to Commons that could be used to better illustrate Pennsylvania wine articles. If you're interested in helping, please drop a note at the Wine Project's talk page with the article you're interested in helping with. Thanks and have a great New Year! US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:22, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Pennsylvania has no class=Book or class=Redirect

Pennsylvania has no class=Book or class=Redirect shown in the summary table Pennsylvania articles by quality and importance. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Pennsylvania/Assessment. I would like those classes to be shown. I have been inquiring how this could be done at Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Index#Question about Book and Redirect. I would ask other Pennsylvania project members if they, too, would like these classes included. Also, as a technical matter, I do not know how to do the change, so I hope some other editor knows how to do it. Comments, please!--DThomsen8 (talk) 14:13, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. When tracking the fourth dimension, topic, the related article lists tool (such as for U.S. article lists tool) also might be useful by filtering on categories of interest.

If you do decide to use this tool, feel free to update Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages as well.

ERRORS! about Pennsylvania Dutch as a language

I live in Centre County, which has a large Amish population (albeit not as large as Lancaster, but large nonetheless). I happen to know that amish children only speak Pennsylvania Dutch. WP:NRHP is having a Fall Photo Contest running from Oct. 21-Dec. 4, 2011. I'd like to encourage anybody who enjoys photography, and anybody who is interested in historic places to participate as a photographer, a sponsor, or both.

One way that an individual editor or a project can participate is to sponsor their own challenge. For example, somebody here might want to include a challenge such as "A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds the most photos of previously non-illustrated NRHP sites in Pennsylvania to the NRHP county lists." To sponsor a challenge all you need to do is come up with an idea, post it on the contest page, and do the small bit of work needed to judge the winner(s).

Any and all contributions appreciated.

The Speedwell Forge article has a number of brief biographies of ironmasters at that location, and the lede suggests breaking those up into individual articles. Bald Eagle Nittany High School

The existing Wikipedia entry for Bald Eagle Nittany High School is incredibly short. It contains no photos (I could defintely send in one of the current building, and a sign for "Ben Avenue.") For sports, it talks primarily about wrestling, which is hardly inclusive of all that went on at BEN High School. I don't understand why there is even a heading for "Track and Field," as there was no Track and Field at BEN High School. The area for noted alumni appears to be written by 1-3 people who all know each other. Is there a way to fix this? There were two movie theatres in Palmerton. One "Palm" - already noted in the WiKi Palmerton page The other was located one block away in the 200 block of Delaware Avenue. I don't remember the original name, but as a kid growing up in Palmerton back in the 30s and 40s, we referred to it as the "Ranch House" since most of the movies were usually 'shoot 'em up westerns' "B" type movies whereas the "Palm" showed first class movies.

Leaflet For Wikiproject Pennsylvania At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Green Lane, Pennsylvania

In this article, under "Recreation", it might be inferred that there is a park within the borough, supported by borough taxes that's primarily for borough residents. In fact, the article is referring to Montgomery County parks which are supported by and shared with all Montgomery County taxpayers, and I believe are not even within the borough limits. I would suggest changing "Green Lane offers a large park ..." to "Green Lane is near a large park ..." which would clear up completely any misunderstanding. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.191.236.21 (talk) 20:06, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

PA House & Senate Resources

Articles regarding the Pennsylvania State Senate and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives have passed some major milestones recently. First, every State Rep and Senator who served from 2000-now has at least a bare-bones article. However, these articles still need to be fleshed out, and everyone is invited to help out. Every State Rep article has at least an archived external link to an official PA House profile. This can be used for biographical data. The Senator articles still don't have this, but such links can be found here: (1997199819992000200120012002200320042005200620072008). The article for Thomas W. Dempsey is a good example of how these can look.

Second, every PA Senate district and PA House District have articles. However, most of the senate and many house articles still need a table of representatives. That data can be found here. The article for the 83rd district is a good example of how these can look. I would invite everyone to help us out!--A. Gorilla (talk) 03:29, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Lists of municipal authorities

Here is a short how-to on the way to create the Lists of municipal authorities:

First, download data on the special purpose governments in Microsoft Excel .xls format from the Census of Governments website. Then, edit and trim the superfluous columns and other non-pertinent data. Then, run some =Proper(A1) commands to get the data out of the ALL CAPS format and into a more usable "proper" capitalization. You will probably have to run some find/replace searches to turn the Mcc, Mca, and other strings into McC and McA. Some of the government names had some descriptors in (Parentheses), which are probably added by the Census. Delete them, so you have the proper title.
Then, create a test table with the different columns that you want to see in your list. This will give you an idea of what kind of format you need your final data output to be in. Then run a =CONCATENATE(A1) commands to collect the various columns into 1 cell per row, with the requisite "||" characters into a form that was easily plugged into the Wikitable code.
Then, you have to go through all the redlinked cities and direct them to the best place. Use your best judgment to see where the targets ought to be--either by creating redirects or piped links. You might want to create a wikilink for the "function" column. You can use a search/replace command to change a large number of these to an active state at once. At this point, you should have a decent and properly formatted list of special purpose governments.--Blargh29 (talk) 04:52, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Townships

I'd like opinions on moving many Pennsylvania township articles. Some months ago, Omnedon and I moved all Minnesota townships to "_____ Township, _____ County, Minnesota". Prior to this time, they had been in a format similar to those of Pennsylvania: townships with unique names were at "_____ Township, Minnesota", while those with duplicate names were already at "_____ Township, _____ County, Minnesota". We did this in the interests of consistency: it's much simpler when all the townships have the same naming format. What would all of you think about moving most Pennsylvania townships so that they're all located at "_____ Township, _____ County, Pennsylvania"? Nyttend (talk) 13:31, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

  • Support - I think this would help - as it is when writing about a township, I am never sure if the name is unique or not, this would avoid red links and dab links. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 13:36, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
  • I've no strong opinion either way, as my edits only incidentally touch on PA townships (usually while trying to link to the hometown of some historical person from PA). But another approach to consider to avoid redlinks is to simply make sure a complete set of redirects are in place. That way, you could always be certain that a link in the form "_____ Township, _____ County, Pennsylvania" will not be a redlink and will go to the correct page, while also leaving the short form as the actual title for those pages that don't need disambiguation. I believe this approach is somewhat more in line with avoiding unnecessary pre-disambiguation (as in the protracted TV show naming controversy and as had been a frequently point of contention in US city naming conventions. olderwiser 21:53, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Support – I would like to see more consistency on place articles. This would definitely pinpoint in which part of the state the township is located. Will you be updating each county navigational template to avoid redirects? Maybe a bot could fix all redirects. ~ All is One ~ (talk) 14:36, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Only for townships. We should not do this for municipalities, boroughs, and cities, which almost always have unique names already. --M@rēino 15:28, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Comments — I've never meant to suggest moving anything but townships: boroughs and cities (plus the town and the town wannabe) should definitely remain where they are. As for the redirects — as the one who created the majority (or at least the plurality) of all county templates nationwide, I'm always sensitive to redirects, so don't worry about them. I'll be sure to update links for any county that I move, and I know that Omnedon was always careful to do likewise. Nyttend (talk) 02:41, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Unless the duplication of names across the state is fairly significant (>50%), there is no compelling reason to do this. One can always just create redirects to the name that includes the county. What fraction of townships would not need the county name for disambiguation? --Polaron | Talk 03:06, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Maybe support - Can this be done without breaking a lot of wikilinks? For example, all of the pages in the Category:Pennsylvania House of Representatives Districts and Category:Pennsylvania Senate Districts are linked to townships, and I'd hate to see all those links broken. Otherwise, a great, but tedious to implement, idea. --A. Gorilla (talk) 02:57, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Strong Oppose This goes against the naming conventions for locations. Adding the county name is only done when there are multiple locations in a state with the same name. TJ Spyke 18:19, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Strong oppose Agree with opinion directly above. For instance, Haverford Township currently shows as "Haverford Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania". This is against existing naming conventions. There is no other Haverford Township in Pa., let alone the entire rest of the United States. "Delaware County" ought to be removed from the title. However, the many Springfield townships in Pa.? Of course list them with their county names. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.78.53.160 (talk) 03:36, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Strong Oppose Last I checked, making editors' jobs easier is not a criteria we are supposed to consider when deciding titles. Was this little survey announced anywhere? Like WP:RM? An obscure discussion on a WikiProject talk page is not how we establish whether consensus exists with regard to title decisions. --Born2cycle (talk) 22:22, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Help

I really need some feedback at the featured article nomination for United States Senate Democratic primary election in Pennsylvania, 2010. Any help would be very much appreciated! — Hunter Kahn 21:11, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Township article titles

Apparently, articles on Pennsylvania townships are preemptively disambiguated with the name of the county, even when the township name is unique in the state. This produces unnecessarily long article titles and leaves readers unsure if a particular township is the only one in Pennsylvania by that name or not. It is in opposition to the guidelines at Wikipedia:Article titles, which ask us to be only as precise as necessary while still using a common name for the subject. The latter provision is why we append state names to the article titles, because people frequently do so in normal conversation and writing -- but I don't think the same can be said of the county names. Powers T 22:59, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

  • I support removing unnecessary disambiguation from Pennsylvania townships. It goes against all five principle criteria set out at WP:AT. Jenks24 (talk) 23:32, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
  • I also support removing county names from the township article titles if the township name is unique. For example, there is no reason Palmer Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania can't be Palmer Township, Pennsylvania, as there are no other Palmer Townships in the state. And, as Jenks points out, doing so would be more in keeping with current Wikipedia guidelines. — Hunter Kahn 21:11, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
  • I am neutral. It doesn't really matter to me one way or the other. I just want us to reach a decision and then make all the changes that need to be made when a broad decision is reached. The Horton Township discussion was too narrow and the other was too broad. I think it should be kept to Pennsylvania. Gerry D (talk) 13:36, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Naming conventions for Townships in Pennsylvania

The text of the following notice was written by Gerry D on my talk page. I'm reproducing here in the interest of seeking broad participation in the discussion. olderwiser 13:55, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

An important question to this discussion is: If the decision is made to move these, who is going to move them? Can a bot do the moving? I moved many of them a couple or more years ago and it took a long time. It was a three or four person job that took all of us a long time to move. The moves inlcuded avoiding the redirects, updating templates, etc. It's going to be a big project. This is my main reason for opposing the move in the first place. Gerry D (talk) 14:00, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm not bot-proficient, but if a list of articles (and talk pages) that need to moved can be produced along with the corresponding new names, it seems a bot could easily process the moves. Although it has been inactive of late, User:JdforresterBot appears to be designed to handle page moves. olderwiser 14:11, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
The Category page should take care of the list we need. When we did the moves before we just went county by county. Gerry D (talk) 14:33, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
The bot would need a list to know which pages in the category to move and to where -- otherwise new logic would need to be programmed for a bot to be able to determine which pages in a category should or should not be moved and what the new title should be. olderwiser 17:12, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
If the decision is made to move the articles, I will make the list. I will need someone else to make the contact with the operator of the bot. I know nothing about how bots work. Gerry D (talk) 17:39, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Historic figure - notable?

I've run across William Fife (Captain Billy Fife), which I'm considering listing for deletion - as it stands, the article is about two-thirds discussion of someone's research into his (disputed) genealogy. I made some changes a few weeks ago to the stub article on PA's 9th Congressional district, as the existing text was woefully out of date.

Alas, I have no Wikipedia coding skills and was unable to add the requisite footnotes and links. I was reluctant to write much for fear of mucking up the formatting.

Standard Steel Casting Company, Thurlow, Pennsylvania, was the largest plant in the country for the manufacture of open hearth steel castings. This concern made all the most important castings for battleships, cruisers and ordnance for the United States Government. They also made locomotives, e.g., TRAINS, railroad tracks and much more. Thurlow, Pennsylvania is mentioned in several other articles in this encyclopedia!!! Thurlow, Pennsylvania should not be deleted; rather its location which is now Chester, Pennsylvania, should be indicated in the article with an explanation (or a historical note perhaps). It has value to Historians and Genealogy Researchers. My LONG ancestors who invented The Long Rifle settled Longstown, Pennsylvania. Longstown (Union County, Pennsylvania), is now New Berlin. A quick dip into Linn's Annals reveals MANY such changes.

If this encyclopedia is to serve its purpose, deleting the name of a town because its name was changed means it never existed, right? WRONG!!!

Respectfully,

Category:Unincorporated communities in Pennsylvania

What do people think on this project, regarding the category - Category:Unincorporated communities in Pennsylvania, with 272 entries, 26 full subcategories and 1 empty subcategory, which was done on my part, since I impulsively wanted the entries in the subcats to just be in the parent category, along with the remaining 250 something entries. Should we create more subcats, where we would put each unincorporated community based on their county, eventually having all subcats and 0 entries in the parent? (For example, Category:Unincorporated communities in ________ County, Pennsylvania) Or consolidate them all into the parent (Category:Unincorporated communities in Pennsylvania) and have like over 300 entries with no subcats? Ideas would be great. Other states, such as NJ, CA, DE, etc (see all examples here: Category:Unincorporated communities in the United States by county) use this categorization method. Tinton5 (talk) 20:10, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

If there are reasons why we need to do this I don't understand then maybe they could be clarified but going to a category structure like this seems like it would be very time intensive to maintain with limited return on the investment. Kumioko (talk) 20:40, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I originally thought to consolidate the entries in the subcats into the parent one. I think that isn't as time consuming, but we shall see.. Tinton5 (talk) 20:44, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
Consolidating all the categories would probably be fine now, since Pennsylvania doesn't have that many communities with articles yet. Having the counties split up might be more useful in the future, though, since there are a lot of PA communities without articles, and if anyone makes a dedicated effort to write articles on them the main category could easily end up with over 2,000 articles. Granted, anything's probably better than the current structure, where some counties with 1 or 2 communities have subcategories but some counties with over 20 don't. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 22:34, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
I believe that unincorporated communities by county categories should exist for every county and that the parent category should not be included in any of the articles about the individual unincorporated communities. Dough4872 00:13, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
I think they should all be in one category for now, rather than one category with a bunch of subcats. I mean, there are 60-odd counties. Snowman304|talk 20:07, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
There has been a disagreement with User:Hmains, another user and myself, where I acted bold and tried to consolidate the pages into the parent category, but was threatened with warnings in doing so. I was only going based on consensus made here, but now I have not made any further edits on the topic. I still think it is tedious to create subcategories for each county, since there is a large number to deal with. It seems odd to just have now 27 subcats out of 67 counties to include here, even with the "populate" notice. Tinton5 (talk) 20:58, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

In addition, the category organization for this state is somewhat disorganized. Entries in Category:CDP's in XX County, Pennsylvania are mixed in with Category:Populated places in XX County, Pennsylvania, and vice versa Tinton5 (talk) 21:04, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

I don't really see the problem there, since census-designated places are also populated places. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 22:55, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

Now we have a user inserting the parent category Category:Unincorporated communities in Pennsylvania to each page that already has been refined to Category:Unincorporated communities in XXX County, Pennsylvania. What would be the purpose now of having Category:Unincorporated communities in Pennsylvania by county, when there are duplicate entries? Not to mention, it was still being populated. Tinton5 (talk) 02:55, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Right now, 785 articles have been dumped into Category:Unincorporated communities in Pennsylvania, needlessly and confusingly overlapping with the breakdown by county. How do readers benefit by having a single category with what could well be thousands of articles competing with a structure that breaks it down by county and that allows navigation across the other categories organized by county? I agree that the subcategories for the 67 counties should all be created and that the parent should be left empty. Alansohn (talk) 16:51, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

At first I wasn't too fond of the idea, but now I agree with this. Unfortunately, User:Hmains began adding these to each page, and has convinced me into breaking down category structure from county-level view and from state view (the 785 + pages in Category:Unincorporated communities in Pennsylvania). However, I feel we need to figure out a way to solve this categorization issue. It will take a long time to undo each edit, however, it will also be tedious to create more county categories for each community. Tinton5 (talk) 18:51, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Use of "costly" in school-district athletic programs

I have noticed this in a number of school-district entries for Pennsylvania. The wording is consistently the same.

"**** School District offers a wide variety of extracurriculars, including clubs, organizations and an extensive, costly sports program."

Early PA elections

Hello, While reading the articles on some of the early Pennsylvania gubernatorial election, the political parties listed as having contested these elections left me puzzled. In the 1811 and 1817 articles, a National Republican candidate was listed as having won the election, and in 1823 the winner was identified as a Democrat. However, the National Republican Party the article was linked to was founded in 1824, and the Democratic Party in 1828. Based on my (admittedly limited) research, it seems these names were pseudonyms for the Democratic-Republican Party, and I have changed the articles to reflect this. However, my knowledge of Pennsylvania history is basic at best. Is there anyone who can speak more authoritatively on this subject?Nathaniel Greene (talk) 21:07, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

@Nathaniel Greene: Your reasoning makes sense. Sources like ourcampaigns.com are suspect, and Wilkes University wrongly indicates the National Republican party. @Tyrol5: Since you're the original author, do you have reliable sources for these elections? It seems from [this source] and [this PA archives page] that the wikipedia articles had mistaken rival factions within the Democratic-Republican Party as distinct parties. Unless you know of any sources that say otherwise, I'll go ahead and make the appropriate changes. Thanks! Nathaniel Greene (talk) 00:22, 20 May 2014 (UTC)
@Nathaniel Green:, @Chris troutman: Hi, guys. These early elections are a bit convoluted in that factions can be misinterpreted to be individual parties, parties misidentified (i.e. Dem-Rep as Dem or Rep), etc. I've since stopped using "ourcampaigns" as a reference, instead using Wilkes University, which is based upon historical returns, newspapers, etc. The results from the two sources, from what I've seen, are identical for these elections. See, for instance, List of Pennsylvania gubernatorial elections, where I used Wilkes for the results. A confusing aspect is the contemporary practice of referring to Dem Reps as "Democrats" or "Republicans" before these individual parties existed. The results might reflect that and I have no objection to changing them. Wilkes is the only source I have for them, but I suspect some of the party misidentifications are the result of what's written in Wilkes' sources, newspapers, journals, etc. which of course aren't without errors or party nicknames that have since ceased to exist. In this case, I'll defer to your judgement and I have no objection to changing the articles where necessary. Tyrol5 [Talk] 00:48, 20 May 2014 (UTC)
@Chris troutman:, @Tyrol5: Early partisan divisions were certainly chaotic, to put it mildly. For the sake of consistency, I think it's best if we use the "Democratic-Republican label, as this was the name of the national organization and seems to have been the most common appellation of many applied to the same group. If we can confirm that a specific candidate ran on a "National Republican" ticket in a specific election, however, I am not opposed to mentioning the name change in the article.Nathaniel Greene (talk) 02:30, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

Punxsutawney entry, would be nice to add a boundary map.

PA state 114th disctrict

Hi all, first time here. The description of the 114th PA House district is out of date. The District no longer encompasses 3 counties, but instead is wholly contained within Lackawanna County with a very "Gerrymandered" outline too complicated to describe here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.70.10.157 (talk) 02:22, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

There is a lot of information missing such as the origin of the Curran Cup http://coaldalehighalumni.homestead.com/article_coaldale_celebrates.html

I'm no good at editing Wiki articles and prefer not to. But I wanted to learn more about the Anthracite League and it's teams.

This information would be useful information for the Anthracite League and it's teams. Armorbeast (talk) 07:54, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Photographing every municipality

Several of us are engaged in a project to make sure that every municipality in the state has a photo in its article. That's one photo for every city, borough, town, and township. We'll probably leave census-designated places and unincorporated communities for next year.

There are 2562 municipalities in the state, which is likely the largest for any US state. So far we have about 1,869 of them photographed, with about 700 left to go. You can see what photos are needed, divided by county at User:Nyttend/Pennsylvania

You can also see the entire list at List of municipalities in Pennsylvania. Please take photos and upload them, first to the article for the municipality and then to the list article. We'd like to be finished with this project by July 4th, 2015.

What should you take photos of?

If you live in the area, you probably know better than we do what's the most important or most beautiful part of the municipality. But just in case you need a few ideas, try these subjects.

  • the town hall
  • railroad station
  • fire station or police station
  • a building on the National Register of Historic Places
  • a school or library
  • a bridge
  • a church
  • a park, perhaps with a Civil War monument
  • the corner of State and Main Streets
  • the most beautiful building in town
  • the tallest building in town

When uploading the files to Commons, please include a category for the name of the municipality, or if no such category exists, the name of the county.

Smallbones(smalltalk) 02:35, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

Of course, street scenes are very often helpful in a community, or open countryside in a rural area; see the photos in Scottdale, Pennsylvania and Mifflin Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania for some decent examples. Nyttend (talk) 02:41, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
I really like this project and wish I had more time to contribute to it. I haven't been very active the last few years and have lost track of some of the tools. Is their an easy to use Flickr upload bot? I used to use one regularly, but I think it's now dead. Flickr user Nicholas T is an amazing photographer who licenses his work under a wiki friendly license. I have uploaded many of his photos in the past. Gerry D (talk) 22:14, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

We've got about 5 photographers working on this already: 1 in western, PA, about 3 in SE PA, and 1 in NE PA. It looks like we need some folks in Central PA! There should be a "watchlist banner" running during June for all registered editors with a PA located IP. If you have any questions, just ask. Smallbones(smalltalk) 04:05, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

This may be the wrong place to ask, but what is a located IP, or the distance/range/history of one? I am not in PA, and drove through two weeks ago, but am getting the banner. --☾Loriendrew☽ (ring-ring) 11:57, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
@Loriendrew:, First a request, then an explanation
  • Do you see that small blue link saying "[hide]" right after the banner? Please click it and see what happens. Does it stay hidden the next time you log in? I thought it was supposed to - please inform me if it doesn't.
  • Locating an IP is not an exact science, so the folks who run this "watchlist banner" function recommend making the coordinate box bigger than the actual target area. I made it fairly close when I applied and they widened it when they implemented it. I can go back and request that they tighten it back again if you'd like, but that won't eliminate all "false notifications." Thanks for your understanding. Smallbones(smalltalk) 15:34, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

I can do most of the remaining Venango places. Perhaps others when I travel.

Copyright Violation Detection - EranBot Project

A new copy-paste detection bot is now in general use on English Wikipedia. Come check it out at the EranBot reporting page. This bot utilizes the Turnitin software (ithenticate), unlike User:CorenSearchBot that relies on a web search API from Yahoo. It checks individual edits rather than just new articles. Please take 15 seconds to visit the EranBot reporting page and check a few of the flagged concerns. Comments welcome regarding potential improvements. These likely copyright violations can be searched by WikiProject categories. Use "control-f" to jump to your area of interest (if such a copyvio is present).--Lucas559 (talk) 15:59, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Also, I'm new at making proposals, so please forgive me if I do anything silly. :) Hope that you like this idea! JonathanHopeThisIsUnique (talk) 04:57, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Pennsylvania to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Pennsylvania/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the Tool Labs tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 03:46, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Bank of New York Mellon

Hi there. I'm posting to see if there are any editors willing to look over a request I have over on The Bank of New York Mellon Talk page. To summarize, I had several suggestions for updating the article and there is one remaining about a recent award. I am working as a paid consultant to BNY Mellon, so I won't be making the edit myself. I'd like editors' input on whether the award is worthy of inclusion and, if so, help placing it in the article. The editor who was working with me previously hasn't responded in a bit, and the article falls under the scope of this WikiProject, so I thought I'd drop a note here. Thanks! Naming Conventions

For some reason, naming conventions in PA do not match the naming conventions in the rest of the US. For example, Upper Merion should be at Upper Merion, PA but is instead at Upper Merion, Montco, PA, same as all the other places in PA. The US standard is City, State. Why is PA different? Sir Joseph (talk) 21:14, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

And it seems to be arbitrary. Some places have the county name in it, and some places, specifically neighborhoods, not even cities are just city, PA. That doesn't seem right at all. Sir Joseph (talk) 00:52, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
Comments: Sometimes things just happen a certain way. There does not actually have to be an active project for there to be a naming convention because of consistency. However, no convention can over-ride a more broad community-wide consensus. You can boldly change articles until you hit opposition, which likely may happen, or you can try to gain collaboration and possibly make broad changes. Yes there will be opposition, and sometimes it will not matter if citing a super majority of WP:Policies and guidelines show without a doubt a certain naming, some (I have seen this first hand) will argue that the color black is not really a color. WP:CONCISE would dictate using no longer a title as needed to uniquely identify the subject. This has been found by the various state naming conventions to leave out the county. Of course there are exception when a township or city might have the same name, where names like Bell Township, Pennsylvania would be ambiguous, necessitating names such as Bell Township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, Bell Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, and Bell Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Otr500 (talk) 23:25, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
That's what I did, so far no pushback. What was odd was that's claimed was that there was a convention, but I didn't see anything. Sir Joseph (talk) 00:00, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
Great! Apparently, from recent events at talk:Johnstown Flood, there is no actual naming convention on Wikipedia and certainly not with this project. Since it seems that many WikiProjects are either inactive or very semi-active it doesn't seem to matter. I would suggest continuing with what you feel as corrections according to other articles also keeping in mind references of common name. Don't forget that in some instances it will not matter if a name is so vague as to be laughable since local naming can trump policies and guidelines (even though it is not suppose to), other like articles, and even common sense. This can also sometimes be supported by some administrators. If you hit some seemingly retarded local campaign just overlook it and keep going.
I created Johnstown flood of 1977, Victor Heiser, and Johnstown flood of 1936 if you care to take a look. I do not know if you rate articles but they could use this. I probably shouldn't have bothered as I was informed that the Johnstown Flood was considered "THE FLOOD" (of many) and none of the others were worthy of an article. Then again maybe they will survive as all of them are referenced and I would think at least "Start-class". Otr500 (talk) 09:51, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
That's what I found weird, in the naming request, some guy brought in all the typical Wikipedia acronyms and said PA has a naming convention. I then searched this area and found it had none and decided to opt to follow the US naming convention. There is no reason we need to go to through a redirect to get to an article for every PA town. Sir Joseph (talk) 14:20, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
If I run across needless redirects, especially of a name that is primary and should not redirect, I correct them. I thought that was what we are suppose to do right?

Otr500 (talk) 03:52, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

Correct. Apparently someone decided that is not the case and stated there is a convention, but I checked and there is no such thing. There is a countrywide convention to follow and we should try to follow that as much as possible. Sir Joseph (talk) 18:49, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

Weatherly, Pennsylvania discrepancy

On the Weatherly PA wikipage, you have a statement saying that the town was named after David Weatherly in exchange for a clock: that the clock was built into the tower of the school. This seems unlikely as the name change took place in 1863, and the school was not built until 1901-1903. You may want to verify this information as it contradicts the weatherlypa.gov page.70.44.235.137 (talk) 06:55, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

I knew it well from the late 1930s When it was called" The Cigar Store ' by the locals , later named the North Wales News Agency . The owner at that time was a Mr. Naylor . During WW 2 the owner was a Mr' Phillips , and after the war it was Luther Thomas , whom I delivered papers for ---- The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin , the Philadelphia Morning Inquirer , and the North Penn Reporter . I left North Wales for California in 1948 . I will never forget this building and some of the happiest days of my life !! Thanks a million to whoever entered the beautiful photo of this building !!!!! It was so much of my personal history . Bill Tomlinson , Barstow , California junkmen45@san.rr.com Please let me hear from anyone with similar interests in that building and the history of North Wales in the 1930s and 1940s . Please see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:North_Wales,_Pennsylvania for 9 more photos of the same building. You should thank @Nyttend: for placing the photo in the article. The photo was taken in 1993 by James W. Scott of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) - your tax dollars at work.
Now for the good part: you can get the same photos at the Library of Congress website http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/hh/item/pa3312/ and a jam-packed one page history of the building at http://cdn.loc.gov/master/pnp/habshaer/pa/pa3300/pa3312/data/pa3312data.pdf

US 50,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more states than they might otherwise work on. If there's the interest I will start 1000 State Challenges like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of states regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for the US and your specialist/home state like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every state, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any state sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:35, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

The article got somewhat vandalised; appearantly the user pasted content from another article (which I was not able to identify). Please one more affluent with the topic could fix that. TIA. --Matthiasb (talk) 21:35, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages

Greetings WikiProject Pennsylvania/Archive 5 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Talk:Leggetts Creek/GA1 - Looking for some help

The GA nominator and article-creator of Leggetts Creek has not edited Wikipedia since this past September. I am attempting a Review of this article but I cannot edit it or fix its issues because that would, of course, be a WP:COI. Am hoping that a WikiProject Pennsylvania participant would be willing to step in and fix this article up so we can work together and I can then complete my Review.

Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 19:37, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

GA Nominations without active editor-nominators...

I understand Project members are overwhelmed with the many editing tasks to do around Wikipedia. I just wanted to let any interested editors know that I intend to either abandon the Review or Fail the GAN at Talk:Leggetts Creek/GA1 and also abandon the Review or Fail the GAN at Talk:Eddy Creek (Lackawanna River)/GA1, if the articles don't receive the needed edits and the various issues aren't fixed within the next few weeks. I had high hopes when I started that they could perhaps get to GA status...it's a shame, they're nice little articles - in my opinion they just need some fixes and tweaks to possibly pass to GA status. I felt like I owed the Project some notice. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 21:05, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Leggetts Creek has now been passed to GA status with the help of User:Hanif Al Husaini & User:Sir Joseph. I still intend to fail Eddy Creek (Lackawanna River) before the end of the month if no one volunteers to fix up its issues. Shearonink (talk) 18:06, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Notice to participants at this page about adminship

Many participants here create a lot of content, may have to evaluate whether or not a subject is notable, decide if content complies with BLP policy, and much more. Well, these are just some of the skills considered at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship.

So, please consider taking a look at and watchlisting this page:

You could be very helpful in evaluating potential candidates, and even finding out if you would be a suitable RfA candidate.

Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Pennsylvania/Archive 5/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Pennsylvania.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Pennsylvania, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Draft article for David Trone

Resolved

On behalf of David Trone and Hickman Analytics, I have submitted a draft article about this American businessman as part of my work at Beutler Ink. Given my conflict of interest, I will not publish the article to the main space and ask independent editors to review this draft for accuracy, neutrality, and verifiability. Is there a WikiProject Pennsylvania participant who will help move the draft into the main space? Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 14:57, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

This draft has been moved into the main space, so I am marking this section as resolved. Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 16:45, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

Edit request to update article

Resolved

Hello, again! I have submitted an edit request to update the Wikipedia article for David Trone, who has roots in Pennsylvania. I've proposed a few updates to the article's "Personal life" section, and suggested a few links for "Further reading" and/or "External links" sections. The proposed additions (which I've outlined here) are not very controversial, in my opinion, but I can't edit the article directly because of my COI and I'm looking for a neutral volunteer who can review the proposed text/links and update the article accordingly. Is a WikiProject Pennsylvania participant willing to help? Inkian Jason (talk) 20:18, 11 July 2017 (UTC)

Hello! An editor has assisted with the first 2 requests outlined here, but there's one part left (#3) and the reviewing person would like more input. Is someone able to take a look at the proposed text, and update the article appropriately? Inkian Jason (talk) 16:43, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
The edit request has been answered, so I am marking this section as resolved. Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 17:11, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

Another Project Proposal

I am proposing a grant to fund a Wikipedian in Residence at the University of Pittsburgh to facilitate the transfer of historical content contained in the University's archives and collections into Wikimedia projects. I am currently the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar with the Library and Archives of the University of Pittsburgh and have discovered the wealth of content related to historical women that resides in the Archives and Library collections. Your support is solicited for the Project Grant that can be seen here. Part of the grant-making process requires notification of those who would like to support this project.

I am the potential grantee and believe that being in the position of Wikipedian-in-Resident will make a significant improvement to contributions to Pennsylvania topics. My editing history already demonstrates my commitment to creating content on topics related to women. As a Wikipedian-in-Residence I would be training new and experienced contributors and highlight the available resources contained in the archives and collections at the University that will improve the content on Pennsylvania.

I know the potential for the improvement and addition of content is great. Not only is your support requested but I would be very, very grateful to any other editors who can identify topics that need to be addressed and topics that need improvement. All advice is sincerely welcome. Thank you for your consideration.

Disambiguation links on pages tagged by this wikiproject

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

A list of the relevant links on pages which fall within the remit of this wikiproject can be found at http://69.142.160.183/~dispenser/cgi-bin/topic_points.py?banner=WikiProject_Pennsylvania

Please take a few minutes to help make these more useful to our readers.— Rod talk 17:58, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Error on area of Byberry, Philadelphia

The article currently shows the area being "4.700 acres", which is listed as something like 0.01 square kilometers. I believe this was entered in European style, and should be "4,700 acres", as would fit a township of some 5 miles long by 2.5 miles wide. There are 640 acres to a square mile, 5 X 2.5 = 12.5 square miles, 12.5 * 640 = 8,000 acres. Since 5 X 2.5 are its max dimensions, an area of 4,700 acres would fit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.78.248.170 (talk) 01:10, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

I agree with your math; there's no way Byberry, Philadelphia is only 4.7 acres. That said, the info comes from this website and it says 4.7 acres. It's a US website about a US place so I doubt your interpretation about "European style" of using a decimal in place of a comma is correct. The website might be wrong. If we could find a citation that supports your assertion, then it would be easier to change. Change it yourself if you want, but you'd be going against the source material. That said, most of that article is unsourced and has been for years. I'd prefer to delete the whole thing but since people live there, it qualifies for notability per WP:NGEO. Request for quality classification reassessment for 20th Pennsylvania Infantry article

I just completed a major upgrade to the existing content for the 20th Pennsylvania Infantry article as part of the WikiProject Military history's April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive. Originally classified as Start-Class, this article had very few citations, and was missing significant data about the regiment's duty stations. So, I beefed up the article's history section, added a list of the most senior officers for each of the 20th's companies, replaced the question marks for casualty figures with information available via the 20th's registers, added a new public domain image of one of the regiment's 1861 recruiting flyers, and added and populated a new section for external resources. I believe the article now qualifies for at least C-class status (and possibly even B-Class) because it now meets the criteria for B1 through B6. How do I request reassessment of this article? 47thPennVols (talk) 00:05, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:51, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

WP 1.0 Bot Beta

Hello! Your WikiProject has been selected to participate in the WP 1.0 Bot rewrite beta. This means that, starting in the next few days or weeks, your assessment tables will be updated using code in the new bot, codenamed Lucky. You can read more about this change on the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team page. Thanks! audiodude (talk) 05:43, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

@Audiodude: It would be helpful if you could provide an explanation here in layman's terms regarding what this particular bot will do and how the WikiProject Pennsylvania was selected for participation. (The link you provided in your message above really does not provide much in the way of an explanation regaring the purpose of your project. It would be useful to know why this bot may be needed, what exactly your group is proposing to test using the Pennsylvania WikiProject, how the assessment tables for the WikiProject Pennsylvania may be changed/impacted, and whether or not the changes you're making will be reversable if WikiProject Pennsylvania members find these changes do not meet the needs of the group.) Thank you in advance for your response. Kind Regards. 47thPennVols (talk) 07:43, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
@47thPennVols: Thanks for your thoughtful consideration of this matter. You can read more about the bot at User:WP_1.0_bot. To be clear, this is not a new bot that is performing some new operation, but rather a rewrite/update of the existing "second generation" WP 1.0 bot to its "third generation". The rewrite is proceeding in parts, so currently the only part that is rewritten is the code that walks through the "Pennsylvania articles by [quality|importance]" pages and collects which articles are part of those categories.
we're testing the new bot on your WikiProject soon (it hasn't started yet) as a way to verify that the bot works on a small number of WikiProjects before letting it loose on a larger number. Your WikiProject was selected because it contains between 10k and 50k articles. If everything is working smoothly, you should see no difference in your assessment table(s). If something goes wrong, it would be easy to rectify the situation by switching back to the old bot.
I hope this answers your questions and I'd be glad to answer any more that you might have. audiodude (talk) 22:08, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Asking for an Article Re-Assessment

I have done extensive work on the Penn's Creek massacre page over the last few months and improved the article substantially. It is rated Start Class but I believe it should now have a higher rating. I cannot for the life of me figure out how or where to ask for one - I know I'm not supposed to assess it myself since I'm the one who did the work, but I can't find anywhere to list it to ask for someone else on the Pennsylvania project to do it. Can anyone help me out? Thanks. Lilipo25 (talk) 04:54, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

  • Generally speaking, unless an individual Wikiproject has its own set of separate assessment criteria, anyone can assess any article, per Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Assessment FAQ. The ratings are informal and for internal use at Wikipedia, so with the exception of FA, GA, or A-rating classifications (which have separate processes) I think it's fair for you to assess an article that work on yourself as long as you do so in good faith. That being said, I looked over your work, and that article is clearly more than a Start class now, so I've added an assessment to it myself. Nice work! — Hunter Kahn 15:58, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
    • Hunter KahnThank you very much! I appreciate your help and you taking the time to assess the article. Lilipo25 (talk) 18:15, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Brock Blomberg Article

Hello! I'm Tom and I work for Ursinus College in Montgomery County, just outside Philadelphia (as I state on my profile page and at Talk:Brock Blomberg). I've made a Wikipedia account to address some inaccurate and misleading information on the article about the college's president, Brock Blomberg. I have two outstanding requests: the first is to remove misinterpreted text, and the second is to add what I believe are well-documented details about his career. Most recently, I reached out for help at the biography of living persons noticeboard but I have not yet received a reply.

Might any members of WikiProject Pennsylvania be willing to take a look and update the article on my behalf? I'm avoiding editing the article directly because of my conflict of interest as a representative of the college. Please know this was cross-posted to WikiProject Education as well. Would some members of this WikiProject mind taking a look this article? It underwent a major expansion recently and lots of the content seems too detailed and perhaps a bit WP:UNDUE. There are various formatting and syntax errors as well as well as quite a bit of WP:Namechecking, but it's the overall tone and excessive amount of sections (some which seem redundant (like "Prestige" and "Awards") or not really warranting such detail (like "Website redesign") that makes the article (at least in my opinion) a bit promotional in nature. Someone obviously put some time into expanding the article, but perhaps they tried to add too much. -- Marchjuly (talk) 15:30, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Wissahickon Skating Club

Would someone from this WikiProject take a look at Wissahickon Skating Club? The article has been around since 2010 and it doesn't appear to have ever been assessed for Wikipedia notability. Pretty much all of the article is unsupported content and it might have been subject to COI editing over the years. Googling the club's name get hits to its official website and various social media posts, but not too much more. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:24, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for your question. I just did a quick search on Newspapers.com, and a list of 755 articles was returned, many of which were from major newspapers. This organization has been around for more than fifty years. In addition, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III were both in attendance when the club officially opened on October 28, 1956. They were there to watch their niece present a skating exhibition. So, just from a quick review, I'd say it does appear to be notable and worth saving. I'll take a closer look over the next several days and will add some new inline citations and address the other issues addressed by the tag. - 47thPennVols (talk) 02:44, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
That's fine and thank you for taking a look at this. I only did some very minor cleanup and if others are able to flesh things out more than that would be great. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:54, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
My pleasure. I've re-worked the article and have added more than a dozen inline citations; so, it's now in much better shape after having the two of us work on it. (It turns out that several Olympians and professional skaters have trained here. So, this gave me the chance to learn something new.) Best wishes for continued success with your editing! - 47thPennVols (talk) 05:26, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
I agree that the article is in much better shape than it was when I posted above, and that's mainly due to your efforts. I do, however, don't really see any need for stand-alone "Pro shop" and "Public session" sections and perhaps they can be incorporated into some other part of the article, or a new more encompassing "Facilities" section could be added which could cover more information about the structure itself (if such information can be found). -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:11, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Quite honestly? I don't see a problem with these two sections being left as they are. The remaining text doesn't feel at all promotional, but instead just shows two of the historical aspects of a non-profit that has been operating for more than half a century. Also? There are so many articles on Wikipedia that are in far worse shape (awful grammar, formatting that isn't reader-friendly, historically inaccurate, and stubs about sports figures who played for less than full seasons who never truly achieved notability, for example) that I think we can both spend our time more productively by moving on to other articles that really could use our attention. - 47thPennVols (talk) 07:44, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Dthomsen8 has passed

Hello WikiProject Pennsylvania, it's been brought to my attention on my talk page prolific Wikipedian David Thomsen (Dthomsen8) passed away in November 2022. He was also a prolific copy-editor at the Guild of Copy Editors, of which I'm a member. As he was a somewhat active member of this WikiProject, I'm asking if anyone here would want to collaborate on a short obituary for The Signpost. I'm also going to ask at WikiProject Philadelphia, which seems less active than this project. Feel free to get in touch on my talk page or here; I'll watchlist. Pennsylvania Dutch

I fear that, despite what may be good intentions, the articles on the Pennsylvania Dutch and the Fancy Dutch have become sprawling monstrosities in desperate need of an editorial weedwacker. Many of the claims in the interminable articles appear to be fact-free, lacking context, or poorly sourced. I don't have the time or the sanity to review all the content myself, but it is a glaring problem for what was once a sensible article. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 11:10, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
