Hello, I just wanted to introduce myself and my course. I have just my enrolled my Wetland Ecology course in the WikiEdu Dashboard for Fall 2019. I will be teaching 6 upper level college students and am planning on introducing a Wikipedia editing project. We will be learning about wetland ecology and would love to add our knowledge to the Wikipedia community and to this WikiProject specifically. I have selected about 20 stub and start articles for us to edit, most of them are linked to this WikiProject. I am a wetland ecologist with interests in wetland assessment and ecological integrity, as well as geographic information system (GIS). Hi KHillWells! That's great to hear. We have a few short "introduction to Wikipedia editing" materials that might be helpful on this WikiProject page. If you do come across articles that aren't linked to this WikiProject but you think fall under the scope (which I think most if not all the articles should), please add the WikiProject L&O banner to the talk page. That will help us find articles that are in need of improving and under the scope of the project. Additionally, having your students link to your WikiEdu dashboard on each article's talk page will help other editors know that major edits are planned for the given article and likely from a new-to-wikipedia editor (maybe you know all this already from WikiEdu help pages). We also have some workshop materials / presentations that we'd be happy to share over email if that would be useful - these materials mostly cover a brief background on Wikipedia, motivation for WP L&O, and how to get started editing (let me know if your interested and I can send some your way). We also haven't expanded to classroom activities but think this is a great way to improve articles and teach students valuable research skills - we'd love to hear your experience after the class is finished and if you're up to it, maybe you (+ others) could create a 'lessons-learned' or 'best practices' section on the WP L&O page for integrating Wikipedia editing in the classroom. There are many academics that contribute to this project and some might be inspired by this section to integrate into their own classroom. Thanks for saying hi and let us know how we can help! Hello, Jayzlimno. Welcome to the Teahouse and congratulations on setting up your new wiki project on Limnology and Oceanography. The tool you need for achieving this task is 'auto wiki browser' see WP:AWB. It is an extremely powerful and versatile tool for making multiple edits. It would allow you to create a list of pages from a named category and then to automate edits to those pages. I very much doubt you could add an assessment to each article because this is subjective matter, best done by editors manually, but adding a talk page template should be very straightforward (though I've not done this myself with a AWB). I've taken the liberty of giving each of the participants listed in your project a welcome message from Wikipedia, full of a host of useful links. Might I suggest you urge participants to create a 'user page', and to add a few lines about themselves there? Please encourage them all to seek help from us here at the Teahouse, should they get stuck on anything. Understanding the "dos and don'ts" is never easy for new editors, and transitioning from academic writing (where primary sources are king) to encyclopaedia writing (where reliable secondary sources are far more important) can take some getting used to. I'd like to welcome the participants in WikiProject L&O to Wikipedia. As far as I'm aware, there hasn't been a group of experts joining en masse before. I hope your editing experiences are pleasant, and you are able to improve Wikipedia's coverage of limnography and oceangraphy related subjects.

I gather you are coordinating your activities somewhere outside of Wikipedia. I'm not sure if you're communicating electronically, or are physically present together somewhere. If you are using electronic communication, and it's not a totally private forum, it would be good to include a link to the place where discussion is happening on the WikiProject page, or consider migrating that discussion here. A major reason to have a WikiProject is to provide a forum for collaborative communication, so the WikiProject isn't really fulfilling it's potential if the discussion is happening elsewhere. If you are having an edit-a-thon where you are physically present together, I hope you become comfortable enough with Wikipedia to continue contributing after the event ends; do consider documenting the results of your event here.

I think the scope of the project could use some clarification (perhaps it will become clearer as more articles are tagged for the project). There are already [Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceans|WikiProject Oceans]], WikiProject Lakes, and WikiProject Ecology. What sets the scope of this project apart from the previously existing projects? WikiProject Lakes is very much focused on articles on particular bodies of water as geographical entities (as is Oceans, to a lesser extent). I'd guess maybe you are wanting to focus more on basic concepts in L&O, theories, study methods and instruments, etc.? I don't want to define the scope for you. Most of the science related WikiProjects I'm familiar with tend to have many articles on the particular objects of study (e.g. species, geological formations, astronomical objects), and relatively few article on the scientific field per se; WikiProject Chemistry is the major exception with articles about the field ( WikiProject Chemicals as a separate project).

Thanks for the welcome, Plantdrew! We have coordinated our initial editathon via email and a private slack channel along with some very early discussion that was in person. Our initial editathon was a pilot to see how editing would go for people who haven't edited Wikipedia before and to work out any kinks about the wikiproject and editing L&O articles before casting a wider net for contributors. Another big part of the off-Wikipedia conversation was the lack of experience of editing Wikipedia (e.g. it was easier to have conversations outside of Wikipedia), our trust in each other, and some fear of harassment from Wikipedians if we asked dumb questions or made mistakes. The pilot has gone well so far and we will definitely move our conversation and coordination to Wikipedia in the future now that we are all more experienced with editing.

We are working on defining the scope of the project as we progress and the WP assessment bot has been down for a while so there are over twice as many articles currently tagged as is shown in our assessment table. Oceans WP appears to be inactive; WP Lakes has a different goal like you said it is more focused specific water bodies; and I would say we're more closely aligned with WP Ecology although L&O includes more chemistry-, physics-, and hydrology-related topics and more focused on methods and concepts, although also can include scientists, field sites, and site-specific topics. This WikiProject is only about a month old so we need a little bit of time to work on the scope and get some more experience under our belts, but so far I think the L&O participants agree that there is plenty of work to be done on the L&O related articles. Maybe we can keep revisiting this scoping question every month or so...

Are USGS Water resource regions in scope?

Hello! I was referred here from WP:WATER, and I was curious if USGS Water resource regions are in scope for this project? The region and subregion information is currently filled out with information and maps listed in the USGS document published in the 80s, but I'm not good enough at GIS to put in the most recent data, update the region/subregion assignments, or upload updated maps. My stretch goal is to eventually have similar hydrological information for Canada and Mexico (I believe they also produce similar datasets due to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation). Hi Furicorn, thanks for reaching out. I think these articles might be on the fringe or outside of the scope of this project as we're tentatively making a distinction from this WikiProject and WP:RIVERS, WP:OCEANS, and WP:LAKES by dividing articles between processes/concepts vs. geopolitical-based. The HUC regions seems a little bit more place-based and might fit better within the scope of WP:Rivers or WP:Geography. Having said that, I work with several USGS employees who deliver water information and/or work with HUC datasets a lot and I can ask if any one of them would like to contribute to this effort. Ocean, Sea, World ocean

Each of Ocean, Sea and World ocean has a "not to be confused with" hatnote listing the other two articles. But this is unhelpful, because there is no description of WHY the 3 articles are different. Could one or more editors from this WikiProject work up a better hatnote, using the {{about}} template with for statements, to specify what each of the 3 articles discusses? Thanks! Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Scope of Seafloor mapping

I expected to see more on the types of maps of the seafloor, what they are used for, and methods of producing them. Merging Ocean chemistry and Marine chemist into Chemical oceanography

I propose to merge Ocean Chemistry and Marine Chemist into Chemical Oceanography. I have added merge from templates to the Ocean chemistry and Marine chemist articles, and a merge to template to Chemical Oceanography. I am in favor of this merger, which will improve the quality of information on Chemical Oceanography and Wikipedia as a whole. The history of merge requests on the talk page of Chemical Oceanography indicates a consensus for this action, which I propose to be carried out by the WPL&O community pending further discussion. More instructional videos?

Hi Jayzlimno, I just spotted the two videos that you had commissioned for this project and which you have included in the project page. They are nice and useful! Do you have funds to create any more? For example, it would be good to have one that shows the editing process in a bit more detail. There are of course lots of editing videos around (e.g. on youtube and Wikimedia Commons) but they become outdated fairly quickly and I think it helps users to see videos that demonstrate the editing in their area of interest (aquatic sciences in this case). In my work, I refer people to these tutorial videos but they are not professionally done. EMsmile (talk) 05:27, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi EMsmile, unfortunately we don't have more funds to create other instructional videos. And yes, the editing video we created is quite a broad overview and meant to introduce editing Wikipedia to aquatic experts who have not edited Wikipedia before. We also didn't want to overwhelm new contributors and so intentionally kept these videos short and broad. The videos you linked are great for going into more detail though and we'll try to link to those videos at the end of our instructional videos hosted on YouTube. If you (or others) like the style of the videos and want others created similarly, you could contact Elizabeth Herzfeldt-Kamprath (https://www.elizabethjoyproductions.com/) - she's the one who did all the animation and voice over.

Tides in marginal seas

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Appropriate image?

The image being used to illustrate the wind fetch article is part of the wake created by a ferry. I know very little about this domain, but that doesn't feel appropriate to me. Am I overreacting, or should this be removed? DS (talk) 15:12, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

Looks like the wave is used to show the result of wind fetch, and I agree that there could be a better image used than that (especially if it is a wave from the wake of a boat). Unfortunately I don't see any good wind fetch images available on wikimedia commons right now but we can fix that. Jayzlimno (talk) 23:22, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
