Allowed references

What are the current websites allowed as references? I remember years before Allkpop wasn't allowed but now seems like it is. ☴ Jaewon [Talk] 21:01, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

I brought it up on WP:RSN, but there wasn't any replies to it. I think the general consensus is that allkpop can be trusted, but mostly as a translation of a reliable source. Original sources in Korean are valued more, I think. KJ ^{click here} 22:34, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

@Kkj11210: I just finished reading what you said about its reliability. Allkpop is currently the only site for Korean music in English. Besides Korean music news, it is the only site with the most news on actors and comedians too. Allkpop is an English, US-based K-pop blog published by 6Theory Media, LLC. Despite its disclaimer that it is a 'celebrity gossip site which publishes rumors and conjecture in addition to accurately reported facts' as self-proclaimed here, it is also the most trafficked English based K-pop news site in the world, with over 6 million monthly readers worldwide and 100 million pageviews per month, according to its website. There has been previous discussions about the validity of this site as a source, at the reliable sources noticeboard, best represented by the discussions: Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_121#allkpop.com and Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_125#Allkpop_and_Soompi, mostly with a consensus that it's unreliable. However, Wikipedians seems to trust and use allkpop as a reliable source. There is a somewhat significant usage of allkpop as a source, as seen in the following articles: A Pink showing 28 out of 67 sources; Sistar showing 28 out of 50; Miss A showing 39 out of 63.

@Kkj11210:It's sad that nobody replied back to it but I do agree with one person (on archive 121) saying K-pop is troublesome. I've seen too many fan-wars over whose information is correct. I think we should treat this as reliable. I am a bit pressed for time, can someone report the consensus from past discussions? I'd suggest we summarize the discussion and our views in a dedicated page, perhaps Wikipedia:WikiProject_Korea/Allkpop, where we would redirect Wikipedia:Allkpop to reduce the chance another group of editors will have to spend time re-answering this question in the future. Help with Providence

It's a controversial religious movement. I try to help out on the page as much as I can, but many of the sources are in Korean or other languages and I can't really make heads or tails out of these disputes. I can't read the sources, I don't know if they're reliable sources or anything about them, etc.

I would request at the very least for as many people from this project, and especially native Korean speakers to add this page to their watchlist.

Did Gija Joseon ever exist?

Korean music vs K-pop

K-pop is a music genre like Pop music is to other countries:

Japan is J-pop
China is C-pop

In the template, K-pop, I found these included:

Korean wave
Korean hip hop is a genre
Korean rock is a genre
Trot is a genre

Correct me if I'm wrong, hip hop and rock are separate genres. If that was the case, is Tiger JK a pop star? I understand trot came from Korean pop music so it would be a sub-genre, right?

So what I am proposing is creating a template based on Music of Korea as a whole like Music of Japan's template. The reason for this is to enlighten readers about other genres in Korea.

Tiger JK is a hiphop singer and also a pop star. The categories you have mentioned are not in total different boundaries, they sometimes go with each other or not. And Trot can be described as a 'traditional pop music' of Korea. Semi-active?

Did anyone notice that this wikiproject was rerated as "semiactive" in March 2014? This wikiproject is much more active that most wikiprojects that are considered "active", so I find this a weird assessment. -- 65.94.77.36 (talk) 12:26, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

I think this project is active enough. Semi-active would "nobody bothers to answer this for a week or two", and a similar occurrence of new topics here. Since there are at least several new topics started here every week, and several people respond to them (in total), I think this passes. Leaflet For Wikiproject Korea At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

Metropolitan/special city -- same thing?

Can anyone confirm whether http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q482821 (metropolitan city of South Korea) and http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7574799 (special city of South Korea) are the same thing? I'm working off of Incheon, which we have listed as a special city of South Korea. The Korean Wikipedia (ko:인천광역시) has it as a 광역시, which links to that other Wikidata page and calls it a metropolitan city of South Korea. Am I right in thinking these are dupe listings on Wikidata? Name in infoboxes

Is it really necessary in the name parameter to have both English and Korean? Hyuna, for example, has her name (in Hangul) in the lead, the native name and korean name infobox. Manual of Style for Korea-related articles doesn't have a standard on how certain articles should be and I feel like there should be one. @Kkj11210: Yeah, I know and you are correct, it is their only source for K-pop (Even I have a habit of using it until I find a replacement). This is why I included the sites before them to see who uses them. We need a consensus on what can be use so in the future, new editors won't use them. @Jay2kx: Well, you know that WP:RS has the guideline for reliable sources, and WP:RSN is the noticeboard in which they discuss individual sources as reliable or otherwise. However, if you're making a list for new editors, I suggest that you narrow the scope to news sources that deal mainly with Korean material. A list encompassing the entire sources is going to involve every editor on this Wikipedia and will probably take an eternity to come to a consensus. I am looking for feedback to expand Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Korea-related articles after looking at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/China-related articles and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Japan-related articles. There's a point that needs to be agreed upon. The Hangul spelling is usually mentioned in the introductory sentence, but the inclusion of Hanja varies according to article. Right now, MOS:KO holds that:

For articles that do not use infoboxes, the general rule is to transcribe a name or word into Hangul only once, at the first mention

Can we change this so that the introductory sentence includes Hangul, Hanja, and the IPA variations in the introductory sentence? So kind of like Goguryeo. KJ^Discuss? 11:27, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

@WhisperToMe: You start registering from here. It's not too difficult to register - you don't need to prove you're a Korean citizen or anything - but I think you do need a working Korean phone number. On a side note, I just registered and downloaded the file, though it's in NAPDF form. Freedom of panorama, and modern buildings in South Kore

H all, at Commons we are currently reviewing the Freedom of Panorama, with regards modern buildings in South Korea, thus far the consensus is that files depicting modern buildings in South Korea, are not compatible with Commons, and will have to be deleted. This will affect all articles, which use such files, for example File:Seoul montage 2013.jpg which is the lead image for the article on Seoul. You are welcome to participate in the discussion, and to suggest ways in which this will have the least impact on articles here, by for example making local fair use copies of files you believe vital to an article, e.g. as has been done with File:Korea-Seoul-N Seoul Tower-01.jpg used in the article N Seoul Tower, generally I think in order to comply with Wikipedia:Non-free content its going to be one file per article, which best illustrates the building or public art work in question. Hello KTo288. I have now read the section on Freedom of panorama as pertains to South Korea at Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#Korea_.28South.29), and I am still a bit confused. I see how the rule of permitting reproduction of works permanently installed in public spaces does not apply "where reproduction is made for the purpose of selling its copies." But isn't Wikipedia a non-commercial venture? Does Wikipedia (or Wikimedia Commons) publish its information for the purpose of selling that information? Also, in the case of the N Seoul Tower appearing in the Seoul Montage File:Seoul montage 2013.jpg, it is currently the only image of the tower appearing in the Seoul article. As I understand the debate, Commons has a different criterion of uploading images. Images on Commons must be available for commercial usage as well, following the Licensing. Whether the image is the only representation in the Wikipedia article is irrelevant to the Wikimedia Commons discussion. I'll try to find expert opinions on the laws, and if the consensus is that the law is incompatible with Commons license, let me know and I'll try to re-upload images on Wikipedia as non-free files. The purpose of Wikimedia Commons is to provide a repository of free-license (free as in freedom, not free beer) content with no copyright restrictions for those who wish to reuse content. Korean name infobox

Would it be helpful to add the Korean name infobox to more music group pages (e.g. like on Exo (band) and Nine Muses (band))? I ask because I added one to A Pink and another editor reverted it because he didn't think it was needed. @Random86: I use it to prevent people from adding korean text in the name parameter like A Pink and Hyuna. Suicide in South Korea

I am planning on expanding and reorganizing the article on “Suicide in Korea”. Despite the article’s significance, the article lacks in substantial sources and content, and it is rated as “Start Class” in WikiProject Korea. I will replace “Trends” section with “Statistics” section, expand significantly on “Causes” and “Response” sections, and add “Consequences” section. I also hope to add more sources on the “References” section, mostly scholarly articles and data from WHO. I would appreciate any kind of suggestions on scholarly readings regarding the “Consequences” section of my article, and any kind of feedback for the article. I hope to get a better rating for this article, since it holds so much significance in the Korean society. Thanks!

Towns on Yeongjongdo?

I did some c/e, but the small town where the Yongguksa Temple (photos coming soon) is located doesn't even seem to be mentioned in the island article. Nor does it seem to have a name on Google Map, which just shows dongs (districts?). Which, in fact, doesn't mention any existing settlements. Wikipedia supports K-pop 'slave contracting', it seems

For example, the layout of Template talk:K-pop group members table places the slave name (in-band stage name) before the persons legal/born-name, e.g. of Red_Velvet_(band)#Members, Wendy Son is notable in her own right (and has a page). However, in the table she is first named, Wendy, in the stage name column - thus, this is the appropriate place the wiki-link the name (it's piped), whilst Wendy Son is linked-orphaned - generally, this seems dehumanising, and to positively support slave contracting, as well as continuously breaking/stressing WP:NOPIPE.

I'd like you know of: others thoughts on Wikipedia support of slave contracts, where such matters have achieved prior consensus, and ideas on modifying Template talk:K-pop group members table, to make legal-names the first instance. – Ian DjScrawl (talk) 02:23, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

I'm in support of maintaining the status quo of using the stage name in the table first and using it to link to the main article.

The stage name is generally the WP:COMMONNAME for the subject. Members are known more for their stage names, and thus it makes sense to place the stage names first as a means of identification. For instance, if you are familiar with Girls' Generation, you probably heard of the name Tiffany, but not her real names, 'Stephanie Young Hwang' or 'Hwang Mi-young.' Putting the later names in front will just confuse the readers who is expecting a clear presentation of the data.
Classifying the stage name as a 'slave name' is just WP:IDONTLIKEIT. The personal choice of the member concerning his stage name cannot be known, and it's a non sequitur fallacy to assume so. In any case, stage names aren't that different from the members' real names in a notable number of cases. For instance, every member in the group A Pink uses their first names as the stage name, as well as 4Minute and AOA; this is true for 3 members out of 4 in Girl's Day, 3 out of 4 in Wonder Girls, and 5 out of 6 in 2PM, to name a few. Eliminating parts of the real name to present the well-known version of that name is hardly unreasonable.
Piping the stage name in the table does not follow any of the instances given in WP:NOPIPE. The piping falls under the first criterion of Wikipedia:Piped link#Use as changing the wording of the article title to fit context. If it is agreeable that the stage name should be presented first, then piping is appropriate, sometimes even necessary.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Kkj11210 (talk • contribs)

Bon-gwan

I recently created a page for the Andong Kim clan. I'm new to editing, and this is my first page. Considering the New Andong Kim family's monopoly of power during much of the late Joseon dynasty (with the royal family being puppets), I'm hoping that more people will add to this. The Korean article is ko:안동 김씨.

Recently I contacted Ministry of National Defense, and I successfully convinced them to change their flickr's license to CC BY SA 2.0 (one of default flickr CC licenses).
