Question about "Paul Oscar"

Hi, the article "Paul Oscar" is about the Icelandic pop singer, songwriter and disc jockey Páll Óskar Hjálmtýsson, who is known internationally as Páll Óskar and Paul Oscar. Is it more appropriate to refer to him in the article as "Paul Oscar" (as I've done), or simply as "Paul"? Do reply on the article's talk page. Thanks. — Cheers, JackLee talk 02:00, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Copyright

Can anyone establish Icelandic law in relation to copyright, so that we can know what images (eg. old photos, images of paintings etc) are elegible for uploading to WP? This info is available for several countries, especially the USA, at Wikipedia:Copyrights, but some Iceland info would be a great help. Apologies if this is already somewhere on these pages - I'd be grateful to be pointed in the right direction. Otherwise, perhaps someone could add a summary at the WP copyright page just mentioned? Cheers hamiltonstone (talk) 02:06, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Question about Joey Gudjonsson

Does exist any possibility to know is the person who makes a biography? I'm very interested to know who is the person who writes Joey Gudjonsson's biography, and I also would like to have contact with that person. Contact me at missjinx@gmail.com . —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.56.68.162 (talk) 20:50, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Go to the article and click on the 'history' tab. That will give you the record of contributors to the article. Haukur (talk) 21:13, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Help with referencing Icelandic press

Could anyone please help me find references to this WIPO case ("Wal-mart sues Icelandic artist") in the Icelandic press? It's for the article Lárus List. I have been led to believe the story has been covered quite a bit there. TreveXtalk 03:05, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Apparently it's been covered in Fréttablaðið. I can't speak Icelandic! TreveXtalk 03:07, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
Found a couple of references (see article) but would appreciate any other references at all on the artist and the case. TreveXtalk 03:22, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Iceland: Articles of unclear notability

Hello,

there are currently 13 articles in the scope of this project which are tagged with notability concerns. I have listed them here. (Note: this listing is based on a database snapshot of 12 March 2008 and may be slightly outdated.)

I would encourage members of this project to have a look at these articles, and see whether independent sources can be added, whether the articles can be merged into an article of larger scope, or possibly be deleted. Any help in cleaning up this backlog is appreciated. For further information, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Notability.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the Notability project page or on my personal talk page. (I'm not watching this page however.) Thanks! --B. Wolterding (talk) 16:33, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Iceland index

I've expanded List of Iceland-related topics and due to the large number of links, have reformatted the list to be consistent with most other lists in that set (see List of Germany-related topics, List of China-related topics, List of Canada-related topics, etc. The Transhumanist 02:44, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

A new topic-based list has been created for Iceland, using the standard structure for country basic topic lists. Provides a topical map of Iceland subjects, and shows coverage pretty well and key areas that need development. I hope you find it useful. The Transhumanist 02:44, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

WP:FAR nomination of Surtsey

I have nominated Surtsey because it does not seem to meet the featured articled criteria 1.(c), 2.(c), and 4. It is quite short, and is not of comparable length to current FA's. It is very under-referenced, and some of them aren't in the {{cite web}} form at all, just in <ref> tags. I do not believe that this fits the FA criteria any longer. You are welcome to comment at the review. Dreamafter (talk) 22:40, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Icelanders GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed Icelanders and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. I have left this message at this WikiProject's talk page so that any interested members can assist in helping the article keep its GA status. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left messages on the talk pages of the main contributors of the article and several other related WikiProjects. Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix if multiple editors assist in the workload. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 06:30, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Articles flagged for cleanup

Currently, 1716 articles are assigned to this project, of which 254, or 14.8%, are flagged for cleanup of some sort. (Data as of 14 July 2008.) Are you interested in finding out more? I am offering to generate cleanup to-do lists on a project or work group level. See User:B. Wolterding/Cleanup listings for details. More than 150 projects and work groups have already subscribed, and adding a subscription for yours is easy - just place a template on your project page.

If you want to respond to this canned message, please do so at my user talk page; I'm not watching this page. --B. Wolterding (talk) 17:20, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

I think WP Iceland could benefit from a cleanup list (as in fact almost any project could).
I requested the proposed list at User_talk:B._Wolterding. --IsFari (talk) 08:10, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Iceland

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 23:22, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Help request: 79 Iceland-related articles needing geographical coordinates

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Iceland, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Iceland, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Iceland articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

  1. Brú
  2. Grundarhverfi
  3. Hauganes
  4. Hraunhafnartangi
  5. Litla-Hraun
  6. Norðurland eystra
  7. Nyrðra-Vatnalautavatn

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 79 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members.

Please let me know if this is useful, or if I can help in any way. -- The Anome (talk) 22:36, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Financial and political crisis Jan 2009

It seems that the current financial and political crisis in Iceland is the most severe in quite a while. Eirikur Bergmann writes in the Guardian --

"While Barack Obama was being sworn in to office on Capitol Hill yesterday, the people of Iceland were starting the first revolution in the history of the republic. The word "revolution" might sound a bit of an overstatement, but given the calm temperament that usually prevails in Icelandic politics, the unfolding events represent, at the very least, a revolution in political activism."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/jan/21/iceland-globalrecession/print
I don't know how much of this is exaggeration, but I assume that not all of it is.
Shouldn't we be adding a little more on this to the main article Iceland?

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:39, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Þ/ð debate

There's a fairly strong debate going on on the Teitur Þórðarson talk page regarding the use of Þ/ð in main article names. Some input from the Iceland project would probably be helpful because it also touches on the names of other Iceland related pages such as Þingvellir. If this topic has been debated before and a policy agreed, it would be good to know about. Cheers! Ingólfr the Viking

“According to tradition recorded in Landnámabók, the settlement of Iceland began in 874 when the Norwegian chieftain Ingólfur Arnarson became the first permanent Norwegian settler on the island.[4]"

Hi

My name is Einar--Einargunnarb (talk) 16:04, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

What can I say. The above is bad. And referring to a website! It is not possible to say with certainty that Ingólfr the Viking was a Norwegian. Most likely he was not, judging by the primary sources and other evidence. Primary sources have to be used here and in the original language. We can only say with certainty that Ingólfr was Scandinavian, but there are many scholars who want to promote his supposed Norwegian origin. That is another story. I discuss Ingólfr and other interesting issues in an article just being published by a Norwegian magazine. The following letter is introducing the article. It is a short article and most find it interesting.

I have cancelled my previously announced plans of a book about Ohthere’s voyages, which was scheduled for publishing in 2008 or 2009. My most recent article (National Historiographies and the Viking Age: A Re-examination) is divided into three chapters which are named: Ohthere’s Sciringes heal(h); The first victims in the westward expansion of the Vikings; Ingólfr the Viking: the Swedish connection. In the first chapter, I heavily criticize a well-known theory that is a central theory in Norwegian historiography. In the second chapter, I pose a pioneering theory about who were the first victims in the westward expansion of the Vikings. In the third chapter, I discuss Ingólfr the Viking, the account in Libellus Islandorum about the first settlers of Iceland, and other interesting issues. In my view, an exceptionally exciting article. Published in Aust-Agder-Arv 2008 http://www.aaks.no/FullStory.aspx?m=81&amid=5882

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! I see that this category is being used for individuals who lived prior to the modern era, but "historical figures" is vague as a category title, and could just mean anyone who merits an article and is therefore worthy of historical notation. This should be changed into Category:Icelandic people by century (see Category:People by nationality and century and subdivided (e.g., Category:13th century-Icelandic people).

WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:26, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Icelandic references in Halldór Laxness novels

I would like to see more comments on the Icelandic words and references in Halldór's novels. I do not speak Icelandic but have studied Norwegian and have three dictionaries of Icelandic and Old Norse, plus a couple of grammar books. I will start posting some comments very carefully and I hope native speakers of Icelandic will notice and correct any errors that I make, or expand on my comments. Smalahove/Sviðahaus

I think the two dishes are the same, but right now the smalahove article is only listed in the norway project and the food and drink project, not in the iceland project. Also the article claims that the dish is traditionally norwegian without mentioning any presence of it in other western nordic countries. Could someone here that know a bit more about the the (two) dish(es) please edit the article, find sources and then delete this comment? Thanks in advance :-) Luredreier (talk) 07:44, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Iceland articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Iceland articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

The article Fréttir has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search for references found that the word "Fréttir" is the word for "news". All of the news programs and papers and web pages are "Fréttir" (news). It is no more appropriate for the Icelandic word "Fréttir" to contain an article about a specific program that it would be for english word News to do so. No version of generic usage exist in history for this article. Delete and redirect to News

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Spelling: Úlfljótr

Is Úlfljótr this the correct spelling or should it be Úlfljót? Best wishes (Msrasnw (talk) 15:35, 6 February 2011 (UTC))

Úlfljótr is correct, that's the nominative form which you will find as the headword in dictionaries. Úlfljót is the accusative form. The nominative ending -r is sometimes omitted as a form of Anglicization (or Danicization etc.) so Úlfljót could also be seen as an Anglicization. But then you'd typically drop the accents too and use Ulfljot or Ulfliot. Incidentally, Ulfljótr is correct too, as a pre-1200 form, the vowel lengthened at one point. I don't know what the source for that article is, but as an Icelander I think I'm right in saying that those sources are wrong. There aren't many mammals in Iceland, so it's hard to lose count. Dyrhólaey

Dyrhólaey - formerly known as Cape Portland by English seamen? Jules Verne: A Journey into the Interior of the Earth, Chapter IX: "On the 11th we reached Cape Portland. The clear open weather gave us a good view of Myrdals jokul, which overhangs it. The cape is merely a low hill with steep sides, standing lonely by the beach. The Valkyria kept at some distance from the coast, taking a westerly course amidst great shoals of whales and sharks. Soon we came in sight of an enormous perforated rock, through which the sea dashed furiously." Is Dyrhólaey and Cape Portland really quite the same?Miniminimax (talk) 08:41, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Feedback request: VisualEditor special character inserter

The developers are working towards offering mw:VisualEditor to all users at about 50 Wikipedias that have complex language requirements, such as Icelandic. Many editors at these Wikipedias depend on being able to insert special characters to be able to write articles.

A special character inserter tool is available in VisualEditor now. They would like to know what you think about this tool, especially if you speak languages other than English. To try the ⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽ tool, please:

The “insert” pulldown on the task bar of VisualEditor will lead you to the ‘⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽’ tool.

I would say that he is notable, yes. Several icelandic sources state that he was an Icelandic pioneer in electronic music. There is enough of icelandic sources out there to verify the bulk of the article. One of those sources point out that Magnús is mentioned in three english books, published in 1977, namely "The international register of Profiles", "The International Who's Who of Intellectuals" and "Men of Achivement". Copyright Issues around Architecture and Monuments

Be aware that wikimedia commons will not allow images of any buildings, sculptures or monuments whose designer/architect died more recently than 1944. The example below is the deletion justification for all photographs of Hallgrímskirkja:

"This is a building in Iceland by w:Guðjón Samúelsson. In most countries, all paintings, sculpture, architecture, text, and other creative works have copyrights which last for 70 years after the death of the creator. An image of a work that is still under copyright is a derivative work, and infringes on the copyright so that we cannot usually keep the image on Commons. In some countries, there is a special exception to the copyright law which allows such images under certain circumstances. We call that exception freedom of panorama (FOP). Unfortunately there is no applicable FOP exception in this case."

While you may think it's nonsensical that images of a public building which dominates the skyline of Reykjavik are in violation the architects copyright (and I would agree), this is what Icelandic law says according to the judgement of wikimedia commons. Similar apparently applies to all buildings, monuments, statues, etc, etc.

I thought it worth making users aware of this before they put significant time and effort in to images and edits only to have them deleted as incompatible with the copyright policy.

Prosthetic Head (talk) 14:32, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I am aware of that. I want to clear some things up though. Notice that they do mention that there is "no applicable FOP exception". What lies behind that is that Iceland does have an FOP criteria (which is in place in article 16 of the Icelandic copyright act), but it is too strict for commons. The reason for that is that said article 16 does only allow images taken in public for an non-commercial purpose. Since Commons does not allow commercial media, this blocks these images on commons. Keep in mind though that De minimis still applies for pictures of buildings from Iceland and is a perfectly valid reason to keep some images of buildings from Iceland on commons. The fact that the FOP criteria for Iceland does exist also means that it is perfectly legal to upload an image of an icelandic building to the english wikipedia.--Snaevar (talk) 18:57, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Reykjavík Museum of Photography

I've always been sorry that the short life (in early 2014) of a little article on the Reykjavík Museum of Photography ended when it was snuffed out as a copyright violation.

The copyright violation didn't seem a major hurdle to the article's resuscitation, as the quantity lifted was minor. And so over the last few days I've been working toward resuscitation. The interim result is at Draft:Reykjavík Museum of Photography. What within it either cites an Icelandic-language source or doesn't cite any source is taken from the deleted original (though sometimes reworded a bit). Most of what cites sources in English is also taken from the deleted original, though a little is new. I've done a fair amount of rewording, reordering, and link improvement, but little that's really significant to the value of the article. Google turns up very little about the museum; so I fear that if I launched the article as is, it would be deleteworthy as "non-notable" -- which I'd regret.

Perhaps there are good sources in Icelandic, but I cannot read Icelandic. Could some kind Icelandic-reading person please take a look? -- Hoary (talk) 22:46, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Iceland/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 54 articles to be referenced, a 1.8% reduction from last week. The list of all other WikiProject UBLPs can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/WikiProjects.

Your assistance in reviewing and referencing these articles is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please don't hestitate to ask either at WT:URBLP or at my talk page. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 17:27, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Freedom of panorama in Iceland

Commons:Freedom of panorama#Iceland says that "Iceland basically allows freedom of panorama for both buildings and works of the arts in general that have been permanently placed outdoors. If the work is the main subject of the photo and the photo is used commercially, the author of the work (this applies to both buildings and other works!) is entitled to remuneration, unless the publication of the image is in a newspaper or a TV broadcast."

Does this mean that photos of buildings and sculptures can be used here with a fair use licence? I would like to use a Creative Commons image of The Sun Voyager from Flickr (or an editor from here, if he or she wishes to donate one), but I am not sure if the licence can be changed to fair use. I've contacted a member of the parliament in Iceland (Birgitta Jónsdóttir), the laws are soon to be changed, hopefully in October / November 2010 (as she told me), so that the pictures won't conflict the rights of use on Wikipedia. DO Icelandes consider themselves ethnic Norwegians?

According to Alphasinus (talk · contribs) and other users - the entire populatoin of Iceland is counted as Norwegians in the article on Norwegian people. It is not warranted by sources, and it also doesn't seem to be correct to consider the Icelandic people to be members of another ethno-national group rather than constituting their own. Keep an eye out for Norwegians. Also the article Norwegian diaspora considers the Icelandic people a Norwegian diaspora community.·Maunus·ƛ· 16:37, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Cheers! Akerbeltz (talk) 20:55, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

I'd use th in the names and use the other spelling in the main text. Mainly because people can't type Þ normally on a keyboard.--Marhawkman (talk) 01:59, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Keyboards are irrelevant. The Wikipedia Manual of Style is unequivocal when it comes to English language articles - Names not originally in a Latin alphabet must be romanized into characters generally intelligible to English-speakers. 210.7.132.77 (talk) 04:57, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Small villages

I had a picture of Skarð church in Rangárþing ytra, and found an existing stub article Skarð, Iceland that I extended. However, this village/parish is very small and there is little chance that Wikipedia can cover such villages in any number. Besides, this is not the only Skarð on Iceland. Should this article be merged into that of the municipality Rangárþing ytra? That municipality article could contain a list of villages/parishes, former municipalities and other places. --LA2 (talk) 14:39, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

No photos of Icelandic people

Hi WikiProject Iceland: I was reading [Scandinavia and the World] and was wondering what Icelandic people looked like. So I visited the page on Icelanders, and was sorely disappointed. No photos of actual Icelandic people. Can you put together a montage or something of famous Icelandic people, like in the Irish people and Han Chinese articles? Sort keys for Icelandic names

The AWB developers are trying to implement the addition of correct sort keys (DEFAULTSORT, listas) for Icelandic names. But, judging by examples, there seems to be great confusion about the matter. According to Icelandic name, Icelandic directories are alphabetized by first name rather than surname, and indeed, many articles use a DEFAULTSORT of "firstname surname". I believe I've seen some which use the same rule as for Chinese names and add a comma: "firstname, surname". A great many have "surname, firstname", but I wonder if a lot of those may have been added by bots or people (with or without tools) who were unfamiliar with Icelandic names. To confuse the matter even further, many articles use one sort key for specifically Iceland-related categories, and a different one for other categories. Can someone help to clear this up? Thanks. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 21:01, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

I think the best solution is "firstname, surname". I have seen the following variants:
  1. firstname surname
  2. firstname, surname
  3. surname, firstname
  4. first parameter of {{Icelandic name}} (i.e. usually only firstname)
-- Magioladitis (talk) 22:24, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
Copied from my talk page:
When I first ran into Icelandic names as a sorting problem I looked on as many articles as I could to get a sense of what was really happening. Back then there was a tendency to treat the patronym / matronym as a surname except on Iceland-specific categories. I do not know if that is still true. JimCubb (talk) 00:57, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
-- Magioladitis (talk) 13:34, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

It would be interesting to know how Icelandic phone books sort the names. My other question is how different the later name is than in Swedish. I am between option 2 and 3.-- Magioladitis (talk) 03:51, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

First, I don't know what advantage "firstname, surname" would have over "firstname surname". Secondly, this has been written up in MoS-Iceland (now marked as "inactive"). But here, Ipigott points out various real-world problem with the Icelandic order, notably that (however wrongly) most anglophones expect to see (for example) Ragnar Axelsson under "Axelsson" rather than "Ragnar". My own first countersuggestion, which I imagine that most people will hate, is exemplified by the following combination:
  • [[Category:Icelandic photographers|Ragnar Axelsson]] (within such a list, people will expect or anyway quickly adapt to the Icelandic order)
  • [[Category:Black and white photographers|Axelsson, Ragnar]] (within such a list, people who don't know he's Icelandic or don't know about Icelandic names will find him more easily via what they will mistakenly imagine is his surname)
No I'm not keen on this solution; it's just food for thought. -- Hoary (talk) 11:08, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
As I was quoted as writing (above) and still support, this is perhaps the best solution -- “treat the patronym / matronym as a surname except on Iceland-specific categories”. In Hoary's example the sort value for {{BD}}, {{lifetime}} or {{DEFAULTSORT}} would be Axelsson, Ragnar. So a user or an editor who looks at Category:1958 births and has no clue about the "surname vs. patronym" issue will Ragnar where the user expects to find him. A user / editor who looks at Category:Icelandic photographers and who should know about patronyms will find Ragnar were the user expects to find him.
This method does not address the problem on the talk page where there can be only one sort value and it should be the one in the {{WikiProject Biography}} |listas= or a DEFAULTSORT conflict will occur. (I think I know how to eliminate this problem but I know next to nothing about writing templates and have no authority to do so. Also, the solution I have in mind would entail a lot of diligence on the part of those who apply project banners and diligence is not a quality that one would first ascribe to them or their bots.)
JimCubb (talk) 00:49, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
For the talk pages, I would propose to pick the same value with DEFAULTSORT. Since it's only a categorisation only for maintenance reasons, no reason to make a big deal of it. If someone wants to explicitly look for Icelandic names, there are many ways to do so. -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:21, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

This is the conclusion I think:

  • For Icelandic related categories pipe "first name second name" (no commas)
  • For DEFAULTSORT and other categories use "second name, first name" (with commas). Treat second name as surname.
  • For listas use DEFAULTSORT value (since it mainly categorises in non-Icelandic categories).

This makes things easier and I'll add a not to the Manual of Style. -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:05, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

  • That's a reasonable enough compromise and basically what we've been doing. A final question is whether medieval names should be treated as modern names. Should Jón Ögmundsson be treated the same as Ögmundur Jónasson? I think the tendency to avoid sorting by patronymic is even greater for medieval people. Perhaps it is less unexpected there? Haukur (talk) 09:35, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Yes. I think we should follow the same pattern. Less problems, easier for editors to search without knowing the background of the person, etc. -- Magioladitis (talk) 11:34, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

I think this is still an issue. Almost half of the pages in Category:Pages with DEFAULTSORT conflicts are caused by a situation like {{WikiProject Biography|living=yes|class=stub|listas=Sveinsson, Gunnar Bragi|politician-work-group=yes|politician-priority=low}} {{WikiProject Iceland|class=stub|listas=Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson}}. Which listas should be changed or is there another solution?Naraht (talk) 02:05, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Icelandic Naming Committee (Blær Bjarkardóttir name case)

Hi. I recently updated the Icelandic Naming Committee article with information about Blær Bjarkardóttir (the girl who mounted a successful court challenge to the government's refusal to accept her name). I know essentially no Icelandic at the moment, so I'd be grateful if some people who do know this language could check one of my sources (a news story from RÚV) and make sure my summary of this source is (or isn't) accurate.

Here is the source: "Réttur Blævar ríkari en samfélagshagsmunir" (in Icelandic). RÚV. 31 January 2013. Retrieved 13 February 2013. {{cite web}}: Unknown parameter |trans_title= ignored (|trans-title= suggested) (help)

Here is the statement I am using the above source for: On 31 January 2013, the Reykjavík district court ruled in the family's favour and overruled the naming committee, finding that Blær could in fact be both a man's and a woman's name and that Blær had a constitutional right to her own name, and rejecting government claims that it was necessary to deny her request in order to protect the Icelandic language.

I'm probably going to need to learn Icelandic if I'm going to do much more useful work on this or related subjects; I can tell that Google Translate's attempts at translating Icelandic texts into English are less than ideal (indeed, humorously twisted at times: for example, the program simply does not know how to translate Blær — it comes up with "tint", "veil", and even "mood"). — Richwales (no relation to Jimbo) 22:02, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Politics of Iceland page update needed

I have just looked through the Politics of Iceland page because of the 27 April 2013 general election. The page is badly out of date in several places. I copied this as an example: 'The president is elected every four years (last 2004), the cabinet is elected every four years (last 2007) and town council elections are held every four years (last 2006).' I understand that the president of Iceland was reelected in both 2008 and 2012. It seems likely that the other statements (about 2006 and 2007) are also out of date. Can someone who knows what they are doing please update this article? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.28.73.232 (talk) 10:39, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

N-rule — merge or rename article?

There is currently an article on the N-rule in Icelandic. I'm unconvinced that this should really be a separate article, and it seems to me that it should be merged into Icelandic orthography, Icelandic grammar, or Icelandic language. If the "N-rule" really does justify a separate article, then I would propose a different name to make its specific, exclusive connection to the Icelandic language clear — possibly "Icelandic N-rule", or "N-rule (Icelandic language)". Icelandic names for people with multiple nationalities

After coming across Aron Jóhannsson, I was curious how we should handle Icelandic names of people with significant ties to other countries. Currently, the {{Icelandic name}} template indicates this person is properly referred to as Aron, but the article refers to him as Jóhannsson, as though it were a family name. For American purposes, it is—that's what's on the back of his jersey (in Iceland, what goes on the back of Icelandic players' jerseys?). Should we count him, and others like him, as "Americanzed" and treat Jóhannsson as a surname? Practice seems clear for 100% Icelandic people, or for foreign people with Icelandic heritage (e.g., Val Bjornson), but less so for people who can be considered Icelandic and something else. --BDD (talk) 23:29, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

His first name should be used without any doubt. The players of the icelandic national football teams do have their first names on the back of their jerseys. Also, keep in mind that even though Aron does play for the American national team, his name still is Icelandic, and therefore it should follow Icelandic conventions.--Snaevar (talk) 19:14, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Tunnels in Iceland?

Currently all but one of the tunnels in Iceland use the Icelandic name ending in -göng. Hvalfjörður Tunnel is the only page that has been translated into english. That is actually like it should be. It may seem a bit odd, particularly to an Icelander, but the current agreement is to name articles by the most common name in English sources. Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Cabinet question

I just did a quick cleanup project of moving people who had been filed directly in Category:Icelandic politicians into appropriate subcategories, such as Category:Government ministers of Iceland and/or Category:Members of the Althing. However, while there were a couple of articles about current or recent officeholders which made it clear that the person belonged in both subcategories, there were many more that mentioned only the person's service in cabinet but said nothing at all about whether they served in the Althing or not. I know that it works differently in different countries and the Cabinet of Iceland article doesn't make it very clear either way, so I wanted to ask rather than assuming anything: does Iceland work like Canada or Britain, where the cabinet is selected within the legislature and so a government minister would be automatically also a member of the Althing by definition, or does it work more like the United States, where the cabinet is selected separately from the legislature and so a cabinet minister is not necessarily a present or former member of the Althing?

If it's the former, then there will need to be a separate run to add Category:Members of the Althing to the cabinet ministers that I refiled today — but if it's the latter, somebody may still need to research whether some of the cabinet ministers had also served in the Althing, because many of them had extremely inadequate articles that need expansion. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 18:47, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

After each election, the president gives one party the right to form an government. The parties that form an government also agree to an list of ministers which is then approved by the president. (Legally speaking, the president appoints the ministers, but the habit is to allow the majority to appoint ministers). Ministers do not have to be members of the parliament. For example, in the Second cabinet of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir (2009-2013), both Gylfi and Ragna where ministers, but they have never been members of the parliament.--Snaevar (talk) 19:46, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Alternate Names For Stokksnes

I just edited the Wikipedia page for the Icelandic mountain known as "Stokksnes" to state that this mountain is also known as "Vestrahorn" or "Vesturhorn" so that people (such as myself) searching for those names may be able to find that article. If anyone knows any reasons why those two names should NOT be considered synonyms for Stokksnes, feel free to un-do my edit; otherwise, I think it should be left in.

(As for my "sources", I found at least one web site ([1]) which states that the three names in question all refer to the same place.)

LoneWolfiNTj (talk) 02:04, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

They are within 5 km of each other, but not geographicly the same. Vestarahorn or Vesturhorn is an dent in the mountain Kastarárfjall, north of Stokksnes. Stokksnes on the other hand covers only the small peninsula (or headland). I left Vestarahorn in, but explained the difference.--Snaevar (talk) 20:20, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

Icelandic króna: Íkr?

There is a discussion at Template_talk:Currency#Icelandic_króna:_Íkr? about the best currency symbol to be used for the Icelandic króna in a context where it could be confused with the Danish, Swedish or Norwegian "kr". I know that the Swedes use the ISO_4217 abbreviation SEK in that situation. What symbol would an Icelandic person use in that situation? ISK? Íkr? Or something else?  Stepho  talk  06:12, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Need information on a WWII US military base in Iceland

I was reading the Wikipedia entry on Kaldadarnes. The Kaldadarnes entry linked to the entry on WWII sites in Iceland. Only RAF Kadadarnes was listed there. The list seems incomplete. There was a US military base inland somewhere between Gardur and Gunnuhver. It is marked by a historic sign/road marker there. I have seen the marker but I do not have a photo of it. Thank you for accepting this task, about which I do not have further information. Anne9853 (talk) 11:49, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

The WWII site between Gardur and Gunnuhver is Keflavík airport. At the time, it included two airfields, with Patterson airfield being the second one, but it is not currently within the Keflavík airport area. Keflavík airport is used as an civilian airfield nowadays, but there are also army patrols from other nations that use the field aswell. Patterson airfield is not used at all anymore.--Snaevar (talk) 22:45, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

New results table for elections

Hello all, I have developed a new results table to replace the old templates for the Icelandic election pages and have posted here as it is a fairly significant change that you might want to talk about. Please find an example of the new table below. I have edited the following election pages with this new table: 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2009 and 2013 so far and plan to input these new tables to all election pages for Iceland if there is general agreement. Most of the information that was on the templates have been transferred over to the new results tables. However there is some differences, these are;

  • These tables have a nice, clear and cleaner format.
  • The election symbol is used on ballot papers and by media to identify parties. It is relevant information and so I have added it to the table.
  • Though this may be contentious, I have removed the Icelandic translation of the party names as they seemed to clutter the table slightly and the translation can generally be found in the party article.
  • I have also added links at the top to previous and subsequent elections to make it easier for navigating when there is no infobox.

I have also kept the chairperson(s) column in the table as it clearly shows the politicians that led their parties through the election. I feel this keeping this column is clear for the reader, rather than create additional tables that would clutter the article or make it hard to find within the body of the text. I hope folks here think these are an improvement and look forward to peoples thoughts on them. Humongous125 (talk) 19:48, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Thankyou @Snaevar: for your comment.

There is a disagreement on the above table format I am aiming to roll-out for the the remaining Icelandic election pages taking place here Talk:1987 Icelandic parliamentary election. The discussion there is an ongoing debate from other talk pages. I would like to invite other editors to give their opinions and thoughts on it there to help bring the discussion to a resolution. Niceland Seafood

I just created Niceland Seafood - I was inspired by my grandmother who lives in Iceland as I was looking for an Icelandic related page to create. I told her about the page and she couldn't find it when doing a Google search. Either could I. Does it take time for it to appear?

Would someone be able to assist with adding the company logo to the page?

Thank you! MaskedSinger (talk) 16:01, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

Articles younger than 90 days do not show up on Google. As for the logo see Wikipedia:Non-free content for what rules apply and Wikipedia:Media copyright questions if you have any questions about uploading that logo. I can not help you.--Snaevar (talk) 16:31, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

"Mainly statistical division" references in town infoboxes

The infoboxes for Icelandic towns include the notes "Political division" and "Mainly statistical division" in references when explaining what the infobox labels "Constituency" and "Region" means. There are 80 instance [1].

I feel these notes serve no purpose, it is obvious what these terms refer to (especially since they link to Constituencies of Iceland and Regions of Iceland) and they sort of clutter up the references sections (most town articles are unsourced, so we end up with examples like this one where the entire reference section is just explaining that a region is a statistical division).

Would anyone oppose me removing these notes?

(Pinging Snaevar, the only other semi-active editor at this board, who may be willing to opine here)

Thjarkur (talk) 21:00, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

Fine by me. I am generally fine with any trivial changes; Icelandic regions and Constituencies are most of the time the same anyways.--Snaevar (talk) 16:45, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

Icelandic categories

Hi, The note Category:Icelandic footballers has been changed from:

'People in this category should be alphabetized by given name, in accordance with the traditional naming conventions of Iceland. Icelanders typically have a given name and a patronymic. About 10% of the Icelandic population, notably the father-son pair of Arnór Guðjohnsen and Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen, have inherited family names, but are addressed in Iceland by their given names.'

to

'People in this category should be alphabetized by given name, in accordance with the traditional naming conventions of Iceland. Icelanders typically have a given name and a patronymic.'

by User:GiantSnowman

I started adding forenames as per before the change, should I now revert them to being family names ? Please advise GrahamHardy (talk) 19:31, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

You were trying to sort by forename for non-Icelandic players or players without patronyms, why? GiantSnowman 19:33, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
  • In Iceland, names are alphabetized by the given name regardless if the last name is a patronym or a family name or if the person is Icelandic or foreign. In my opinion all the people in the category should be alphabetized the same way. Alvaldi (talk) 19:54, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
What sources or Wikipedia consensus or convention is that based on? GiantSnowman 19:55, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
Here is an english source "And since there are technically no last names, Icelanders refer to each other simply by first name. All directories such as the telephone directory are alphabetized by first name." Here is an alphabetized players listing of the current football national champions on the official site of the Football Association of Iceland. Note that there are several foreign players listed there and their name is alphabetized by their first name. Alvaldi (talk) 20:04, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
The claim that there are no surnames is contradicted by Graham's reliance on the claim that 10% of Icelandic people have surnames. Which is it? GiantSnowman 20:14, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
The article doesn't claim that there are no surnames in Iceland, it states that "there are technically no last names" as Icelanders do not reference each other with them. Case in point Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen who is called Eiður Smári [2][3][4] and one Izudin Dervić who is known as Izudin Daði [5] or simply Daði [6]. Alvaldi (talk) 20:35, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
Where did I say article? Look at Graham's initial post, where he quotes directly from the category - "About 10% of the Icelandic population [...] have inherited family names". GiantSnowman 21:01, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
"The claim that there are no surnames [...]". I'll admit you lost me a bit with that as I don't see any claims here of there being no surnames so I assumed you were mistaking the statement from the article. For the record, according to the National Statistical Institute of Iceland about 4% of the population of Iceland has an Icelandic family names that originates from before 1925 when creations of new family names where banned[7]. Regardless of all that, this discussion is about whether to alphabetized the names in the category according to Icelandic naming conventions or not so the percent of family names in Iceland is irrelevant. Alvaldi (talk) 21:27, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
You posted that earlier "there are technically no last names", quoting from a source; now you say there are 4% of the population, quoting from a different source. Graham said 10%. Who am I to believe?
Back on topic - I have no problem sorting Icelandic players in Iceland-related categories by forename, but trying to do that for foreign or foreign-born players is not appropriate. GiantSnowman 21:31, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
The "technically no last names" is fairly obviously a nod to the fact that the majority of Icelanders have patronymic and address each other, regardless of whether the person has a family name or not, by their first name. Graham is not stating that 10% of the populations has family names, at least not here, he is merely displaying the text that was changed in Category:Icelandic footballers. The original 10% claim was added to that category in 2005. None of this has any bearing on the discussion. My opinion is still that all the people in the Icelandic categories should be alphabetized the same way, by first name per Icelandic naming conventions, regardless of whether they are born in Iceland or are naturalised citizens. Foreign born Icelandic players are referenced by their first name in Iceland just like everybody else [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] and they are listed alphabetically by their first name just like everybody else. Alvaldi (talk) 22:21, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
And my opinion is that non-Icelandic or naturalised Icelandic people with traditional surnames should not be sorted by forename. GiantSnowman 20:15, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
I agree with Alvaldi here, the exact number of Icelanders with family names is irrelevant, as long it is not the majority of the population. I guessed that there where better arguments for sorting Icelanders by family names, but that is clearly not the case.--Snaevar (talk) 15:17, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
Hi, How do we seek dispute resolution (as per the top)?GrahamHardy (talk) 21:09, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

It would be helpful if you actually discussed the matter. You made edits which I reverted; you then posted here rather than talk to me; you then failed to respond to any of the comments here; you then simply made the same edits which I again reverted... GiantSnowman 22:03, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi, there are three types of people in Icelandic categories:
  • Icelandic with Patronomic names - definitely should have sorting on forenames
  • Category:Icelandic people with family names should have sorting on forenames (I think)
  • non-Icelandics with family names. My choice is that all Icelandic named people categories should have the same sorting, i.e with forenames.

i.e. the sorting should be consistent, otherwise it is a muddle, some with forenames, some with family names GrahamHardy (talk) 00:39, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

Except you have also been attempting to sort non Icelandic people by forename as well... GiantSnowman 08:49, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
Not generally, only where Icelandic categories contain people exist, is there a general acceptance that Icelandic people are sorted on forenames even if they have family names? GrahamHardy (talk) 18:33, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
@GrahamHardy There is conseus to sort by fornames in some situations in articles on Icelandic people. See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Iceland/Archive_3#Sort_keys_for_Icelandic_names for details.--Snaevar (talk) 15:17, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

I think there is confusion for example over Category:Icelandic footballers and Category:Footballers in Iceland.

  • Category:Icelandic footballers which includes the note that "People in this category should be alphabetized by given name, in accordance with the traditional naming conventions of Iceland. Icelanders typically have a given name and a patronymic."
  • Category:Footballers in Iceland, no such note is included, so is this kind of category an 'Icelandic category' (with some non-Icelandic people)
  1. Do we use all forenames?
  2. Do we use patronymics?
  3. Do Icelandic people have forenames and non-Icelanders have surnames?

I believe that option 2 is wrong, 3 is confusing, 1 is better. What do people think? GrahamHardy (talk) 16:31, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

For the first I would go with "use all forenames" easily. For the second (Footballers in Iceland) I'd see what the practices are of English-language media in Iceland and go with that. Surely they have local papers covering footballers... WhisperToMe (talk) 02:11, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

Icelandic names in football templates

Hi should the template and similar have 1st or last names eg.

GrahamHardy (talk) 23:04, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

If it's possible, I'd go with full names. While footballers do show their patronym on the back of their shirts due to foreign football registrations (or something along those lines), few if any know who these people are if they're just shown patronyms. Full names are usually what's shown in statistics in Iceland. – Thjarkur (talk) 23:38, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Patronyms only, as is standard and reflects usage on football shirts. GiantSnowman 19:33, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: I wonder if usage differs between Icelandic teams and foreign teams, and does the English language press use the patronyms? WhisperToMe (talk) 02:05, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
Can we have fullnames? GrahamHardy (talk) 00:40, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
I'd go with full names personally WhisperToMe (talk) 02:05, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
In English-language press the patronyms are treated like surnames. GiantSnowman 18:20, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
