Video conversion steps

Before writing anything for the project page, I'm going to list the steps I took to create File:American Beauty gymnasium.ogv, to better get my head around the process. This isn't the only way, but the one that worked for me:

1. DVD Decrypter to rip entire film to VOB.
2. Handbrake to create M4V of relevant chapter, setting all resolution and quality settings at this stage.
3. Quicktime Pro to trim file to relevant length and save as MOV.
4. At this stage, I used OggConvert in Ubuntu to create the .ogv file; however, that's only because I was having lip-syncing issues with other software. For most people, running a high-quality MOV through Firefogg (adjusting the quality and resolution settings at this stage) should work OK.

There are so many different ways of doing this that I'm not sure how much detail on them all we should go into. The other problem is, of course, that in many territories breaking DVD encryption is against ... the law! So, should we really be telling people how to do it (perhaps a caveat stating that will be enough). Steve ^T • C 20:55, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

The DMCA lists an exception to illegal circumvention which I think applies here: "Nonprofit library, archive and educational institution exception (section 1201(d)). The prohibition on the act of circumvention of access control measures is subject to an exception that permits nonprofit libraries, archives and educational institutions to circumvent solely for the purpose of making a good faith determination as to whether they wish to obtain authorized access to the work." Wikimedia Foundation is a nonprofit organization that runs Wikipedia. So your sexy cheerleader is... educational? :) Erik (talk) 21:29, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Audio samples

Does anyone know who would be good to contact about uploading audio samples, like from a film's soundtrack? I looked at music-related WikiProjects' pages but did not really find any guidance about the process. (All the more reason to have this!) Erik (talk) 21:58, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

I only saw that IA page in the last day or two, but spent far too long browsing, watching things like old footage of San Fransisco pre- and post- 1906 quake, when I should have been doing other things. :-) Steve ^T • C 21:42, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Ogg availability on Mac OS and Windows

The section on video states that Mac OS and Windows do not support video by default. In general this is not true any more, as there is a free Java player for Ogg available for videos in Wikipedia articles, and all Macs and almost all Windows PCs have Java installed. The person who wrote a lot of it may still be around - User:Gmaxwell. I think he lives on Wikipedia Commons these days. As I have my own video player, I generally don't edit things like this because of WP:COI. Stephen B Streater (talk) 16:31, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
