Suggestions[edit]

The page looks good on first sight. Nevertheless, some suggestions that might (not sure) make it even better:

  • I can't think of a better wording now, but the section title "Managing your biography", and the first sentence of that section, are likely to raise unrealistic expectalso make it more transparent to them why others may react very fast to their edits; without this information it can look like obsession with that particular page.)
  • Some subjects may have a language barrier and will need special advice. I suppose OTRS will know if this happens so often that it's worth covering this case. --Hans Adler (talk) 22:29, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It might also help to give explicit instructions on how to get to the talk page, similar to the instructions for creating a new noticeboard section. --Boson (talk) 19:45, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am Sherifa Zuhur. Birthdate listed is incorrect. Please REMOVE - I can't see how to do that. Poorly sourced. Fyi. Who is Hans Adler? Do you work for Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:644:400:4C10:99EF:9E98:7342:339D (talk) 21:09, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you are removing unsourced or poorly sourced facts[edit]

I agree with Hans' suggestion that we need to consider subjects who are upset and first-time users.

For example, a subject may read an article about them that they disagree with. The subject goes to Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons and reads "If you are a user who is concerned about the accuracy or appropriateness of biographical material in a Wikipedia article about yourself, please see Dealing with articles about yourself, below." This anchor then links to the biographical articles help page which in turn leads to Commenting and editing on the Wikipedia pages yourself section.

Unfortunately, any subject who takes the route I have just described will (by jumping to an anchor) skip over the following key messages on the WP:BLP page:

  • Unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material about living persons — whether the material is negative, positive, or just questionable — should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion, from Wikipedia articles, talk pages, user pages, and project space.[1]
  • Remove any contentious material about living persons that is unsourced; that is a conjectural interpretation of a source (see Wikipedia:No original research); or that relies upon self-published sources (unless written by the subject of the BLP; see below) or sources that otherwise fail to meet standards specified in Wikipedia:Verifiability. The three-revert rule does not apply to such removals. Editors who find themselves in edit wars over potentially defamatory information about living persons should bring the matter to the Biograpies of Living Persons noticeboard for resolution by an administrator.

A first-time user of Wikipedia could therefore be left with the impression that they have to find a reliable verifiable source to prove a negative. I have therefore added these two messages to the help article. This note is to explain that – as the messages are merely copied verbatim from WP:BLP – I believe consensus has already been established for them. However, if any editor disagrees, please let me know so we can discuss. Thanks - Pointillist (talk) 00:16, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A notice on controversial BLPs in case subject drops by?[edit]

I have wasted too much time dealing with POV partisan warriors trying to make people in the news look bad on their wiki articles; this sort of thing is the most unpleasant element of editing wikipedia!

I am looking at different options (including supporting Wikipedia:Flagged protection and patrolled revisions for BLP only). However, since we can be sure that the subjects of these articles often drop on by, I assume it would be ok to create a section on the page to tell them what they can do to complain about truly POV, Coatrack, WP:Attack page BLPs and make sure it doesn't get archived. (Or someone could create a relevant box with links to WP:BLP and WP:BLP/help.) It would be one way of regulating the article, including by notifying pov warriors that the subject of the article can get help. Thoughts? Thanks. "sections that grossly unbalance the biography's point of view"[edit]

I don't think this would really make sense to someone who wasn't familiar with Wikipedia's concept of "neutral point of view." Maybe change to "sections that result in a grossly biased article"?Prezbo (talk) 04:34, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. CarolMooreDC (talk) 17:57, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Libellous Case-Claudine Barretto's page[edit]

Please ban contributor w/ username "Claudinian" for he/she is contributing questionnable and biased information that will just add to the popularity of their idol. Please edit also Claudine Barretto's page because some of its part are redundant and insignificant. For example: "Claudine Margaret Castelo Barretto-Santiago (born July 20, 1979), popularly known as Claudine Barretto is an award winning and multi-nominated film and television actress and product endorser in the [[Philippines]She is the daughter of Miguel Alvier Barretto and Estrella Santiago Castelo. Siblings include Miguel Jr., Michelle, Joaquin, Geraldine, Gretchen and Marjorie." How can she be considered as multi-nominated if she has only few nominations. Contributor "Claudinian" just patterned their idol's biograpgy to Ms. Judy Ann Santos's page written as: "Judy Anne Lumagui Santos-Agoncillo (born May 11, 1978 in Manila, Philippines), popularly known as Judy Ann Santos or Juday/Judai, is an award-winning and multi-nominated film and television actress, product endorser, recording artist, and film producer in the Philippines. She is dubbed as the Philippines Young Superstar;" which is very evident to be multi-nominated actress due to her numerous nominations in different award giving bodies. Kindly do appropriate action, sanction is better for this kind of anomaly.125.60.204.83 (talk) 13:45, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Simplfying the page[edit]

Redirect[edit]

The page seems too long to be useful, so I've redirected it to the help section of the policy. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 06:54, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I strongly disagree with this redirect; the new target is little help to the disgruntled subject of an article, whereas the former page had useful explanations of how Wikipedia works, how to get help, and what to expect and not to expect. I propose that the page should be restored, and I have invited comment at WP:BLP/N. JohnCD (talk) 17:18, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It seemed a bit long-winded, but if you have strong feelings about it and want to revert, I won't object. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 17:28, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - I have reverted. I will have a look and see if I can suggest any trimming. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 17:33, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Defamed By Wikipedia[edit]

Since it appears that I will not be allowed freely to comment on Wikipedia itself regarding false and defamatory material which is being posted about me on Wikipedia, I have developed my own site where I can speak freely without being blocked and censored. It is at

http://defamedbywikipedia.blogspot.com/

I would sign with four tildes but my account is permanently banned for talking back to people who are telling lies about me, so I will have to just sign it normally.

I'm guessing this guy is some kind of right-wing asshole that I never heard of before. Amazing, that the link to his blog is still around, though it seems the last time it was edited was 9 years ago. Maybe I should check out the article about him if it's still around? --PaulHammond (talk) 14:55, 18 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

About Amar Mitra[edit]

Amar Mitra Perrireddy and Amar Mitra are two different names. The disambiguation page referring to Amar Mitra Perrireddy and Amar Mitra(writer) is not required. Amar Mitra is linked to several other Wikipedia articles like List of Sahitya Akademi Award winners for Bengali and Bankim Puraskar. Also the title of the article Amar Mitra (writer) should be changed to Amar Mitra — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shamikbangla (talkcontribs) 19:30, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Requests by the Topic to Delete a BLP[edit]

I know from AfDs that people of marginal notability can request that their article be deleted.  I was hoping to find the guidelines for doing so here, but don't see it.  Thanks, Unscintillating (talk) 23:36, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WP:BIODEL says such BLPs may be deleted following a discussion: Noyster (talk), 08:33, 19 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Removing Alert Notice[edit]

Hello!

Greetings!

What is the process, please, for having the article "Fishel Jacobs", screened to remove the alert placed at its opening?

Best, Ohev Seforimאוהבספרים (talk) 14:50, 11 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! The article Fishel Jacobs is tagged as having potenitally been written by an undisclosed paid editor, which violates Wikipedia's terms of use. The person who created the account is blocked. The problem with such paid editing is that paid editors tend to paint their subjects in a non-neutral, overly positive light. This goes beyond obvious advertising and peacock terms, although those are obvious tip offs. Other problems can include supression of criticism or negative information about the subject, and over-reliance on sources that aren't independent. These problems can be difficult to detect, and difficult to correct for people who aren't familiar with the subject. There is a tendancy in trying to correct articles with these problems to swing the other way and include too much negative information, giving it too much weight in the revised article. The alert does a couple important things. First, it alerts editors that this article may have these problems and may need to be edited. Second, (and most importantly), it alerts readers that the article could have these problems and may not be a neutral presentation of the topic.
I see that since the tag was added, some people have edited the article in an attempt to resolve the issues. However, the fact that they left the tag shows they did not feel comfortable removing it. I would say that, given this article's history, it's best that the article warn readers of the agenda of its creators.~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:10, 11 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Need to be logged in[edit]

So I tried to start a discussion page so that people would see why I made changes on something that is based on an English article that was poorly translated from German. I can't. Well, not only is not possible to edit and explain the changes without sending people to the discussion site, which some people won't bother, I cannot even start a discussion without being logged in. That would be fine, EXCEPT you don't tell me. All you say is that IF I was logged in, well my name would be shown not my IP address. Usually that means that I CAN SHOW my IP address, but here that is not an option. DON'T LIE TO US.

I have had similar experiences on the German wiki. Usually when I correct semi-wrong minor grammatical errors it is accepted without question. Now I changed one sentence, one that is actually FALSE, as every German English textbook would tell you, one that is so extremely influenced by English grammar, used by incompetent translators pr journalists, it is reverted because it does not improve the article. Even if you think it is correct which it isn't, it is still a clumsy and unusual wording in German. So, to contact the reverter I went to HIS discussion page, to make sure he reads it, another flaw of wiki, explain all this, ask how it doesn't improve when I mention German grammar already, and what his native language is... I cannot post it because of some filter that sees my post as DAMAGING. Now that filter is used to detect obscenities, which I did not use, I think it is only because I am not logged in. Great tell me beforehand, also how can that be a reason that it is damaging, when it is on a discussion board on a members page? Can't you let them decide yourself?

Now logged in users might be what is needed for major edits, but it is weird that I can edit articles, but I cannot explain why on discussion site beforehand, or ask someone on their own site WHY proper German sentence structure and grammar does not improve an article when usually "equal changes" are accepted without questioning. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.154.95.245 (talk) 10:44, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please Review this page warning or remove this page[edit]

Hello,

I was in a meeting today and this page was brought to my attention with this warning and linked to a politician also named Stephanie Thomas. I am a woman with a disability working to empower others with disabilities. Please remove the warning or remove the entire page. It makes me look like I am unethical. There is a warning on the page as if I've done something wrong. I did not put this page together.

Thank you for your immediate assistance I appreciate it. Founder of Cur8able (talk) 02:19, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
