I've been trying to reference the claims that some people have a real major problem with it is still something of a victim of constant revisions. Article Cleanup Requests

The Members of the 30th Dáil article and the Government of the 30th Dáil articles need to be cleaned up regarding the dissolution of the Progressive Democrats (the first one and maybe the second one as the PDs were presumable part of the Cowen Government until they dissolved and that should be mentioned), Ned O'Keeffe's "out and in" of Fianna Fáil, the Fianna Fáil whip having been withdrawn from Jim McDaid and Finian McGrath having withdrawn his support from the Government. See http://electionsireland.org/results/general/30thdail/changes.cfm on the ElectionsIreland.org site, which doesn't show the dissolution of the PDs and has Jim McDaid still supporting the Government which I'm not sure is true. If Noel Grealish is indeed a member of Fianna Fáil now, than that should be indicated in the Members of the 30th Dáil article and clarified on the article on Grealish. Also, I think Séamus Brennan and Tony Gregory should be removed from the lists on the members article, with a "Vacant" category being created in the list by party after the Ceann Comhairle and and with "Vacant" substituted for those two late TDs in the list by constituency. Finally, the graphical representation in the members article will need to be changed. That's a lot for me to do with my very limited experience in large-scale Wikipedia editing and referencing. Francis Bacon (painter)

I am hoping some members can take a look at the Francis Bacon page. Bacon was born in Ireland, the child of an Australian father and an Irish mother, all grandparents were English. He was raised in Ireland till age 16 when he ran away to London. He is listed on Wikipedia as a British artist, which I am disputing. Pin Coordinates for Map Dot

Hi. I've been trying to figure out how the pin coordinates are arrived at to set the dot in the appropriate place for maps in articles dealing with Dublin localities. In the Grangegorman page I've just copied the coordinates from the Cabra. If anyone could explain the process or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. The Commonwealth Realm of the Irish Free State

Before raising an RFC, I'm asking for comment on a matter at Commonwealth realm. The Irish Free State was never a Commonwealth Realm. It was a Dominion. Opinion is divided as to whether The Irish Free State should be listed with Former Commonwealth Realms or Former Dominions. Need terminology clarification

I'm planning to start an article about bog slides, but I need to know what the best name would be for this phenomenon. I've seen "bog slide", "bogslide", "bog burst", and some others. Since this isn't a hazard we deal with in the US, I'd like some input from some of you in Ireland. What's most common? Do news reports tend to use one term over another? Do scientists? Article Request - Craigavon Two

Can someone with more knowledge than me create a page about the Craigavon Two? There are pages about the Guildford Four, Maguire Seven & Birmingham Six, but nothing about the Two. This is all I can find so far:

On the 9th March 2009 Police Constable Stephen Carroll was shot and killed while responding to an emergency 999 call in the Craigavon area. The following day police arrived at the home of Brendan McConville, a local republican, and placed him under arrest. Later that morning, John Paul Wootton, another republican from the area, was arrested in the Craigavon area and had his vehicle seized.

Both men were taken to Antrim for interrogation where they, along with a number of other individuals, were detained while the vehicle owned by John Paul Wootton was taken to Maydown Barracks in Derry for examination. Some days later police recovered the weapon used in the shooting from the rear garden of a house in the Pinebank housing estate in Craigavon. Around the same time a brown jacket with traces of DNA from Brendan McConville amongst others, and a residue which was claimed might have come from a firearm, was taken from the boot of the vehicle owned by John Paul Wootton.

Based on this finding, and under intense pressure to get results, police focused their attentions on these two men and set about constructing a case against them. The reason the police were under so much pressure was that Constable Carroll was the first police officer to be killed since the Good Friday Agreement. Adding to the pressure was the fact that this shooting took place within days of an attack on Masssereen Barracks where two British soldiers were killed.

It later transpired that the car owned by John Paul Wootton had been subject to covert surveillance at the time of the attack by means of a tracking device which had been hidden either in or on the vehicle by the British Army. This device provided data on the movement of the vehicle around the time of the shooting. It would later come to light that data from this device was wiped while the device was still in the possession of the Army. No one could explain why this had happened. The remainder of the data was used to construct a circumstantial yet arguably weak case against the two men.

Eleven months after the shooting a local man contacted the police in the middle of the night on Valentines night and, under the influence of alcohol, claimed to have seen Brendan McConville close to the area from which the shooting occurred on the night of the shooting. It should be borne in mind that in the eleven months from the shooting to this man’s statement, Brendan McConville and John Paul Wootton had been charged with the shooting and their identities were widely broadcast throughout the media.

This man, known only to the court as Witness M, lied continuously under oath while giving evidence. He was adamant that he had no problems with his eyesight and when asked if he had been prescribed glasses he claimed that he did occasionally wear glasses, but only as a fashion item. It was only on day two of his testimony, when confronted with evidence acquired by Brendan McConville’s legal team from an optician in Lurgan where he had previously underwent an eyesight examination, that he conceded that he had been prescribed glasses but this time claimed that they were just for reading. Evidence later given in court would show that in fact Witness M suffered from both astigmatism and short sightedness and could only identify facial features up to half the distance at which he claimed to identify Brendan McConville. At the conclusion of the case the single judge, relying heavily on circumstance and inference, found both men guilty and sentenced them to life in prison. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.30.130.14 (talk • contribs) 18:52, 30 December 2014

Capel Island

I'm probably wasting my time here but as I'm not very wikitastic perhaps someone who is could create an article on Capel Island (or Capel Island and Knockadoon nature reserve), Capel Island comprises part of the nature reserve of Capel Island and Knockadoon Headland, the latter is on the mainland. It is a small island off east County Cork, lying roughly 12km from the town of Youghal. Surprisingly it doesn't have a wikipedia article (which really surprised me). It's GPS coordinates are: Latitude: 51.88, Longitude: -7.861. The island hosts birds such as Chough, Peregrine and a colony of Cormorants. The island also has a colony of goats. Access to the island is restricted and requires the express written permission of Bird Watch Ireland. There is an old lighthouse on the island, built in the 1840's, which was never used and was instead "blacked" out.

Separate WikiProject for Dublin

Biggest city in the country, home of over a million people (U2, James Joyce, Colin Farrell - the list goes on and on), I'm a bit surprised there is no separate WikiProject for Dublin already. Belfast has one, so why not Dublin. I think it's time we had one made? 86.40.189.240 (talk) 20:19, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

I fear that with so little activity on the Ireland WikiProject's own pages a specialised Dublin WikiProject would likely suffer the same faith. There are however several very active editors writing Irish articles but the project itself seem rather stale. If you are actually so enthusiastic then I suggest bringing Dublin up to featured article status with promotion here and see if anyone is interested in the idea. ww2censor (talk) 23:59, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

Mary Elmes

Last month the article Mary Elmes was created. I came across it yesterday and have contributed significantly to its current state (adding infobox, cats, inline citations, content rewrite etc). Mary Elmes was the first and so far the only Irish person to have been awarded the Righteous Among Nations award by the Israeli government. Whilst the latter is slightly controversial in Ireland, the ward is certainly recognised in Ireland and I think that this after BLP, is the best place to look for help on her. I've made a section on the talk page listing what is required, but images and a content writer is minimum. There seems to be alot on the web about her which should be easy to transfer over. I'm not fantastic with writing, so I'm going to need some help with that. I was thinking of approaching WP:Jewish history and WP:France but I'm not sure at the minute. Whilst an FA is thinking a bit too high, it is possible and I'm sure we could get much help from many other projects. One of the references I added is in French, where she married and settled, which means there should be at least some content in other laguages, mainly French and German. Saoirse Ronan

Could someone take a look at Saoirse Ronan, which has been the subject of massive editing in recent days, somehow triggered by that US show fiasco but mostly adding material and references in other areas. Aside from one problem (de-)editor, the general trend seems to have been improving. Could it be that Ms Ronan is now a more important figure than when first reviewed, and perhaps the quality has now moved from 'C' to 'B'? I have reviewed the article and its history. I see the conflicted editing, but see that the current version is much improved on say two weeks ago, and in particular, it appears balanced and well-referenced - 87 references for a couple of pages of text is good. I have raised it to Mid importance, being bold, and am inclined to move it from C-class to B-class, given content balance and coverage (only a bit lacking on the personal life, maybe), decent pictures (often an issue with celebrities) and references, but would ideally like input from another member of the WikiProject. Having assessed hundreds of Irish article I think B-class is about right now that this has been much improved, so that's what I have done. If you had asked at the list for (re)assessment it might have been there a while as I appear to be the only one looking there.

What kind of "parish"?

Please see Talk:Lasswade# What sort of "parish"?. The gist is: In the United States, at least, "parish" almost always refers to an ecclesiastical unit, and its unmodified use to refer to civil parish is misleading and confusing to the typical American reader-- unintentionally, of course, but confusing nonetheless.

I changed the first use of the word in Lasswade to civil parish and {{ping}}ed Tom1955, who seems to have done the most work on the page. Then it occurred to me that there were likely to be many more instances of this mistaken unconscious assumption about what the reader knows. And so I'm bringing the issue here for Ireland, as I have done for the UK. Please {{Ping}} me to discuss.

Thanks for the "heads up." Actually it is the same here, "civil parish" is used mostly by historians, genealogists and when they must, lawyers, and is not in general use - it would never be substituted by a simple "parish." Any such usage is a mistake. I will keep an eye out for naked "parish" usages, where something else is meant, and correct, and I trust others will too. SeoR (talk) 21:11, 16 December 2017 (UTC)

While the phrase is not in wide use today, it can be linked for the reader to understand and not piped. Townlands which are in fair use today especially in rural areas come under civil parishes and therefore these may be important for articles on rural places. The use of ecclesiastical parishes is also in decline in Ireland today.(TMN81 (talk) 13:51, 18 December 2017 (UTC))

I had been meaning to create at least a stub on the subject of the Disappearance of Mary Boyle for several years now, but have always had other things come up. Mary Boyle was a 6-year-old Irish girl who disappeared on 18 March 1977 in rural County Donegal and has never been found. She is Ireland's youngest unsolved missing person. Really surprised there are no articles for the Garda Representative Association or the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, both significant organisations in Ireland. You're welcome! Very timely too, as the roster dispute rises. These are just starts and I am gathering photocopies of microfiches to do more. The coverage in the general history of the Garda I have was surprisingly light on this major topic, but I found the bio of the first GRA Gen. Sec. in the library, and that was more helpful, but in the main, it's newspaper archive work. It was really poor that two of the most powerful union-type bodies in the country were missing, thanks for catching it! It also prompted me to look at the Garda Siochana article itself, and its associated template, which needed work too.n I believe that there will also be enough for a short piece on the Garda Superintendents Association, but that of the Chief Supers, perhaps not.
