Requests for permissions

This page enables administrators to handle requests for permissions on the English Wikipedia. Administrators are able to modify account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, file mover, extended confirmed, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback, template editor rights and AutoWikiBrowser access.

Editors wishing to request a permission flag here should do so following the procedure below. Editors requesting permissions are advised to periodically revisit the requests page, as notifications will not always be given after a decision is made. Editors should not expect their request to be answered right away and should remember to be patient when filing a request. To find out what permissions your account has, go to Special:Preferences, where your permissions are listed in the user profile tab under "Member of groups".

Requests for permissions are archived regularly; please see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive for an index of past requests.

Permissions

Handled here

  • Account creator (add requestview requests): The account creator flag is granted to users who are active in the request an account process. The flag removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24 hour period. It also allows users to make accounts with names similar to other accounts. The account creator flag is only given to users who participate in the ACC process and may be removed without notice should a user's participation in the account creation process cease.
  • Autopatrolled (add requestview requests): The autopatrolled flag is granted to users who are active in the creation of new articles. This tool is granted so their creations are auto patrolled in Special:NewPages. Unlike other requests, any user may nominate an editor for Autopatrolled, even without that user's consent. A user who wishes to have this flag generally should have created at least 25 articles and must be trusted, experienced, and must have demonstrated they are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially WP:BLP and Wikipedia:Notability.
  • AutoWikiBrowser (add requestview requests): AutoWikiBrowser is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Microsoft Windows, designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. It is essentially a browser that automatically opens up a new page when the last is saved. When set to do so, it suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change. Please read the rules of use and registration requirements on the main page before requesting permission. This is not a true user right, but access needs to be granted by administrators just like other permissions. If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage. Users with under 250 non-automated mainspace edits or 500 total mainspace edits are rarely approved. You will need to give a reason for wanting AWB access.
  • Confirmed (add requestview requests): The confirmed flag may be granted to new users who have not yet hit the threshold for autoconfirmed status. These are users who have not had both 10 edits and 4 days experience. People with this flag can upload files and edit semi-protected pages before hitting the autoconfirmed flag. Users requesting this flag must indicate clearly why they should be exempted from the customary confirmation period.
  • Event coordinator (add requestview requests): The event coordinator user right allows editors to create multiple new accounts, and to temporarily confirm accounts so that they can create new articles.
  • Extended confirmed (add requestview requests): The extended confirmed flag is normally automatically added to accounts after 500 edits and 30 days, but may be added to legitimate alternate accounts of users that already have this access. The flag allows users to edit pages under extended confirmed protection.
  • File mover (add requestview requests): The file mover user right is intended to allow users experienced in working with files to rename them, subject to policy, with the ease that autoconfirmed users already enjoy when renaming Wikipedia articles.
  • Mass message sender (add requestview requests): Mass message sender enables users to send messages to multiple users at once. This flag is given to users who have made requests for delivery in the past, clearly showing an understanding of the guidance for use.
  • New page reviewer (add requestview requests): The new page reviewer user right allows users to mark pages as patrolled and use the page curation toolbar. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Page mover (add requestview requests): The page mover user right allows users experienced in working with article names to move them, subject to policy, without leaving behind a redirect. They may also move all subpages when moving the parent page(s). General guidelines include making 3,000 edits and 6 months of editing history. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Pending changes reviewer (add requestview requests): The reviewer flag is granted to users who are experienced enough with Wikipedia editing and its policies for contributing to the process of reviewing articles placed under pending changes.
  • Rollback (add requestview requests): Rollback enables users to remove vandalism much more quickly and efficiently than by undoing it. Users who do not demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes capable vandalism fighting, either because they have no or little history of doing so, or show a poor ability to discern between good and bad faith edits will not be granted this right. Also, it is unlikely that editors with under 200 mainspace edits will have their request granted. For a more detailed explanation of rollback and information about when it is appropriate to use the tool, see Wikipedia:Rollback. For information about the technical details of the feature, see here.
  • Template editor (add requestview requests): The template editor flag allows users to edit protected templates and Lua modules. General guidelines for granting include making at least 1,000 edits overall (with at least 150 to templates or modules), being a registered user for over a year, and having a record of successfully proposing significant edits to several protected templates. Users should demonstrate proficiency with template syntax and an understanding of the need for caution when editing heavily-used templates.

Handled elsewhere

Several permissions are requested and handled elsewhere:

Removal of permissions

If you wish to have any of your permission flags (except administrator) removed, you should contact an administrator. If you want your administrator flag removed, you should contact a bureaucrat.

This is not the place to request review of another user's rights. If you believe someone's actions merit removal of a permission flag, you should raise your concern at the incidents noticeboard.

The bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight flags are removed at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Stewards will typically not carry out such requests unless they are made on behalf of the Arbitration Committee, by a user who is requesting their own access be removed, or in cases of an emergency.

Process

Requestors

To make a request for a permission, click "add request" next to the appropriate header and fill in the reason for wanting permission.

Any editor may comment on requests for permission.

Administrators

Administrators are permitted to grant account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, event coordinator, file mover, mass message sender, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback and template editor flags to any user who meets the criteria explained above and can be trusted not to abuse the tool(s). Administrators may either grant these permissions permanently or temporarily. For convenience, a bot will automatically comment with relevant data if the user does not meet configurable qualifications. Even if the bot does not comment, administrators should review the user's contributions and logs to ensure the tools will be used appropriately and check for any indication of potential misuse.

Once an administrator has granted a permission or decided to deny a request, they should add {{done}} or {{not done}} respectively under the request with their comments. If a user already has the requested permission, or is autoconfirmed and requesting confirmed, {{already done}} should be used. N hours after the last comment was made (as specified by the config), the request will be archived automatically: approved requests will be placed here; declined requests will go here. See User:MusikBot/PermClerk#Archiving for more information on archiving functionality.

Other editors

Requests for permissions is primarily intended for editors requesting a permission for their own account. Other editors are welcome to comment if they have specific information that is relevant to that request that a patrolling administrator is unlikely to discover for themselves. Otherwise, since only administrators can effectively respond to these requests, general comments or 'clerking' by other users are rarely helpful. Non-administrators cannot "decline" to grant a request, because they're not in a position to accept it.

A limited exception to this is Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled, where third party nominations are encouraged. Other editors should still avoid offering general remarks on requests and leave the final decision to an administrator.

I have created a few articles, about 37 per XTools and I understand the policies guiding an autopatrolled user, e.g., the WP:BLP, WP:C, WP:N, WP:V, and they're evident in my contributions. Thanks! Vanderwaalforces (talk) 11:00, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have created around 50 pages thus far, haven't had any issues with them being reviewed except for a few early on when I was still getting the grasp of things. I'm an NPR and understand which pages that qualify for deletion and which are fine for wikipedia. I intend to make a lot of new pages regarding Australian Government Ministries over the next few months and thought I'd get this permission to ease the backlog of unreviewed pages. ––– GMH MELBOURNE TALK 00:15, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have been working with categories more, and would like to see how the AWB could be helpful. Happyecheveria (talk) 22:10, 13 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'll leave this for another admin, but am inclined to decline - given User talk:Happyecheveria#Category edits I think it's probably not prudent to grant you access to automated tools that would speed up your editing at this time. * Pppery * it has begun... 16:18, 17 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have noticed that the eponymous article for university categories is often either missing (eg several in Category:Wikipedia categories named after universities and colleges in China have no articles at the top level) or incorrectly sorted (eg in Category:University of La Laguna) and wish to use AWB with a suitable module to correct this easily. Perspicax (talk) 22:44, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Leaving for a second opinion, but given that you've only recently had a talk page complaint about insufficient care in using automated tools I'm not convinced it's prudent to grant you access to additional automated tools at this time. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:48, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

User:Remsense

Among other aspects, I find myself editing a lot of template-heavy articles and I think AWB would really improve my speed and consistency with such, e.g. foreign language-heavy articles, computing articles, math articles. Remsense (talk) 18:56, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Could you explain what exactly you want to do with AWB? AWB is for editing multiple articles in quick succession, not really for editing template-heavy articles. I took a quick look through your contributions and don't see any mass changes of that sort. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:48, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For example, I semi-manually wrangle a lot of Chinese-language text, and it would be nice for me to format it properly across multiple related articles I'm working on, rather than slowly moving from one to other. For example, I often find myself looking at a group like Chinese characters, CJK ideographs and, say, Qiao Shi. Using regex, it would be a lot more efficient to clean up the same regular discrepancies with language templates and formatting across several articles at once so I can more quickly go on to actually augmenting the respective articles' content rather than iterating through similar regexes single pages at a time, reshuffling what's already there. I hope that makes sense? Remsense (talk) 04:34, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

User:Tanline666

I would like to edit pages like 1904, where instead of it saying "b. 1854" or something like that, it says "born 1854". It sticks out like a sore thumb, and I really do not want to manually edit every single instance of this. It would also be useful in other areas involving similar repetitive edits. (Non-administrator comment) The relevant threads are User talk:OlifanofmrTennant#About a draft you accepted and User talk:OlifanofmrTennant#Multiple messages received about your work as an AfC reviewer. OlifanofmrTennant, this is purely some friendly advice but NPR is a somewhat harder and more demanding perm than AfC, and given your removal from AfC I would highly recommend you work on AfDs and content writing first before NPP. There seem to have been issues with some of your recent(ish) mainspace creations which suggest that you're not quite up to speed with all the relevant policies and expectations for new articles. User:Astrophobe

Hi! I'm requesting this right because I want to grow as an editor from just adding content to also contributing to areas where there's a clear need and a consistent backlog. I'll organize my request around explaining why I satisfy all the criteria at Wikipedia:New_pages_patrol/Reviewers#Guidelines_for_granting. 1) I've been registered and active for well over 90 days, and have made slightly over over 10k live edits to mainspace. 2) I would name "policy-compliant content editing" as the main way that I demonstrate competence under part 2: I've created 316 mainspace articles, which lands me in the top ~2600 or so Wikipedians by articles created. Only one has been deleted: it was the second article I ever tried to write, and it went to AfD because I didn't yet know the consensus around how to interpret "significant press coverage" in WP:NPOL point 2. My articles typically receive good content ratings, with about half assessed at C or higher by the relevant WikiProjects, and fewer than 2 dozen out of >300 assessed as stubs. I've also participated in 4 GAs. One of them became an FA and netted me a Four Award, while another entitled me to a half-million award. I also have participated at AfD over the years. 3) I make a serious effort to always be civil, especially with new editors, and perusing my talk page archives might be a good way to verify this. I've also recently been trying to participate more at the Teahouse. 4) I've certainly done some page moves in my time. I've also had learning experiences from doing it the wrong way, in particular when I mis-judged whether or not a move would be uncontroversial per Wikipedia:Requested_moves#When_not_to_use_this_page (you can find this example in the edit history of Michel Rivard). After I was corrected, I went back and carefully re-read the relevant guidelines, and it has now been several years since I did a move that turned out to be too bold. 5) I've never been blocked. 6) I have only ever edited Wikipedia as a volunteer, and I will only ever edit Wikipedia as a volunteer. Thanks for considering my request! Astrophobe (talk) 16:44, 26 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Done for a one-month trial; you should be fine if you've written an FA but I still wouldn't mind double-checking after a month. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:25, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have been editing Wikipedia for around 6 years now, and have been more actively editing for the past year. I enjoy writing my own articles, as well as expanding upon articles from time-to-time, having made over 4,000 edits to Wikipedia and having created over 100 pages. However, I would love to help in the PageTriage by giving feedback and reviewing articles and helping clear out the backlog.

I have done similar review in a more "unofficial" way, I guess. I often go through the "Random article" button for long periods of time and see what feedback or constructive edits I can add or "needed" banner notices that I can contribute to help improve or increase the chance of improvement on an article.

Please consider me for the permissions of new page reviewer. Thank you for your time, EytanMelech (talk) 17:44, 26 September 2023 (UTC) EytanMelech (talk) 17:44, 26 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I've recently started participating again at AfC and AfD again in the past few months and I figured I can handle the more demanding workload. By my own estimate, in a month I probably won't review much more than a dozen, perhaps a score, but I thought I'd throw my hat in anyway. Alpha3031 (tc) 13:12, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

With the increasing backlog (although drive is coming), some help probably wouldn't hurt. I've been working at counter-vandalism, help venues, dispute resolution, speedy deletion (some of those) and a bit at AFD and removing copyvios, and currently writing a few articles. I've went through all the instructions for the Curation Tool, the new page feed, the acceptance criteria and other guidance. I've understood everything, though if I'm unsure, I'll rather ask for help or leave it in the queue rather than review it myself. NotAGenious (talk) 11:57, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

My page mover trial is expiring in ~1 month and I’d like to have it extended indef so I can continue handling Requested Moves/Technical requests and it often helps with some of my NPP activities such as backlog drive coordination and draftifications. (non-admin comment) I would suggest another trial period to become more familiar with WP:PMR. The move log shows 11 uses of supressredirect so far. RM/TR show 22 edits, but 12 of them involved moving a request to "administrator needed" that actually only required a WP:ROUNDROBIN. And he could use some more RM experience to be better able to help at RM/TR. He has commented in 1 RM, closed 2, and relisted 9. I'm asking for another trial or formal permission of page mover as my current trial will expire in the next week. I'm active in the whole trial period. I mainly use round-robin page moves to swap malplaced disambiguation pages. Moreover, delete-redirect is used to overwrite redirects left by mistaken page moves and tboverride is used to tag editnotices of unsalted deleted pages as G8 candidates. Pending changes reviewer

User:PearlyGigs

Hi. I only joined WP about seven weeks ago and have done 700+ edits so I will understand if this application is too soon. I'm a member of WP:GOCE, however, and my work there involves reviewing so I think I will be able to assist here too. Also, in the real world, I have considerable experience of reviewing, proofreading and copyediting. If this application is too soon, or if there are other processes in which I should first participate, please let me know what I should do and when I should apply again. Thank you. PearlyGigs (talk) 19:30, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@PearlyGigs: I cannot see any experience of counter-vandalism, which is a large part of reviewing pending changes. Would you be willing to reapply in late October after you've gained some experience in this area? Anarchyte (talk) 12:08, 26 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi, Anarchyte. Funnily enough, I spotted a vandal yesterday when I was outside on my mobile but I wasn't able to take immediate action. I logged in about half an hour later and, guess what, someone else had beaten me to it! If I'd been able to address the issue immediately, I'd have done a vandalism rollback and then reported the person to WP:AIV using the ARV function in Twinkle.
You're absolutely right that I should demonstrate actual experience and I'm more than happy to reapply in a month's time. I'll surely have caught some of these characters by then! I'm aware that I still lack experience in some areas – for example, I've only just ventured into the AFD and CFD forums. Thanks very much for considering my request and for your feedback. Regards. Rollback

User:GogoLion

Ok seriously i need this user group. Some people edit what they want to edit without putting any reference and it affects the purpose of Wikipedia's existence, the "real and neutral education" purpose. I saw so many policial articles that were edited by the party's supporters (mainly by the conservative supporters) and they deleted all of the text and change it to their propaganda text. GogoLion (talk) 23:23, 24 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@GogoLion: Could you provide some context? Anarchyte (talk) 11:52, 26 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'll go ahead and decline this, as the described use-case isn't something rollback should be used for (WP:ROLLBACKUSE). Political disagreements are one of the main sources for good-faith disruption, and jumping into such disagreements with a no-edit-summary full revert of all contributions a user made could be highly disruptive by itself. Additionally, the parallel requests for pending changes reviewer, new page patroller and template editor permissions (1, 2, 3) may indicate a lack of actual need for any of the requested permissions. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 20:08, 26 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. I'd like to gain access to rollback rights so I can use Huggle for my counter vandalism work. Tetrainn (talk) 09:13, 27 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@ClydeFranklin/@Diverging Diamond why do you need rollback for an alt account? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:15, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
HJ Mitchell, to use semi-automated anti-vandal tools when I cannot access this account for whatever reason. CLYDE TALK TO ME/STUFF DONE 22:56, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, for the past six months I've been active in the Wikipedia community, adding content, but especially fighting vandalism. That is what brings me here, as I am sure that with rollback I'd be able to prevent vandalism more effectively! I've been using Twinkle to remove vandalism as well, and would like to get access to AntiVandal and Huggle with those rights to fight vandalism even more. Thanks for the consideration, Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 15:37, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I really need this permission, I want to prevent vandalism from happening and make the article peaceful and more. I really have been clearly watching some articles Mohdaltabpaibrahim (talk) 07:03, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not done. Please see the notice at the top of this page. I don't think you have sufficient editing experience yet. Take a moment to check out what counter-vandalism is at WP:CVU, and if you decide you'd like to get involved, you can enroll at the Counter Vandalism Academy to learn more. I have been patrolling recent changes for some time now, and I would like to gain access to rollback so I can use tools like Huggle and AntiVandal to revert vandalism. FatCat96 (talk) 15:08, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Template editor

User:Place Clichy

Hello! It seems that I come across edit-protected templates more and more often. This status would help me contribute usefully. I believe I am a trusted editor with enough knowledge of template syntax and Wikipedia policies that will not break things apart. Examples of protected edit requests (all successful): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Place Clichy (talk) 06:37, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
