Chemical Heritage Foundation Edit-A-Thon Page Remote Participants Welcome
	The Chemical Heritage Foundation will be hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon, June 20, 2013. This event is part of the Chemical Heritage Foundation's GLAM Initiative, in cooperation with WikiProject GLAM and the Wikipedian in Residence program.

If you have a favorite chemist, alchemist, or scientist help to write him or her into Wikipedian history! The Chemical Heritage Foundation is hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon, June 20, 2013, as part of its GLAM initiative. Use the hashtag #GlamCHF on Twitter for this event.

Event Details[edit]

Members of the CHF community and guests will have an opportunity to work on Wikipedia pages of interest to them, particularly those in the areas of the history of science, chemistry, and women in science. Activities may include editing pages, creating new pages, and adding images and metadata, with a focus on CHF’s collection of women scientists. Active Wikipedians and novices are welcome. Coaching will be provided. Please bring your own laptop.

WHAT: Creating and expanding existing Wikipedia pages about the history of science, particularly chemistry, and the role of women in science, drawing on materials and resources provided by the Chemical Heritage Foundation.

WHO: Open to CHF, Wikipedian visitors, and online Wikipedian participants. The museum tour is limited to 10 non-CHF participants; please RSVP before Wednesday, 19 June 2013 to reserve a space. If you do not have any experience editing Wikipedia, please be aware that this Edit-a-Thon will build upon the "What is Wikipedia" and "Wikipedia 101" talks given at CHF and PhillyDH, rather than repeating the information presented there.

WHEN: Thursday, June 20, 2013, 12:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M. E.D.T. (see the schedule below.) Snacks and drinks will be provided.

12:00-1.00 Visitors Tour of the museum, rare book room, and archives (meet in main lobby)
1.00-1.20 Orientation to the Edit-a-Thon and the target resources (Franklin Room)
1.20-3.00 Editing (CHF staff and Visitors)
3.00-4.00 Optional time; people may leave, others continue to edit, chat, or visit the museum until it closes at 4.00 p.m.

WHY: By increasing the number of pages on Wikipedia about chemistry, the history of chemistry, and the role of women in chemistry, this event can help to close the Wikipedia Gender Gap, and increase Wikipedia's scientific content. The Chemical Heritage Foundation has great resources in these areas, many of which are available online.

OTHER: Please bring your laptop or ipad. A limited number of ipads may be available for use by those who cannot bring their own computer to the event.

Women chemists[edit]

CHF has a strong interest in women in science. More than forty women are featured in the Women in Chemistry oral history project, one of several Oral History Projects at CHF. Eight women are also featured in the Catalyst Series of videos of women in chemistry. WHYY used that material to create an hour-long program which is viewable on Vimeo.

CHF has information about many topics relating to the history of science. These were favorites in our brainstorming sessions.

Bakelite -- could expand or add CHF photographs to main article & list of "Other similar plastics and products"
- possible images from CHF could include bakelite objects (buttons, napkin holder, others) but NOT the bakelite oven (Bakelizer) due to copyright issues.

Articles Closely Related to CHF which might pose COI problems[edit]

Chemical Heritage Foundation should not be edited by CHF employees -- it could use a section outlining the history of the organization and its leaders. Currently, only founder Arnold Thackray is mentioned; the current head, Thomas R. Tritton, is to be succeeded in August by German chemist Carsten Reinhardt, author of Chemical Sciences in the 20th Century: Bridging Boundaries. See announcement. It would also be desirable to add images representative of the work of the various departments (see the image uploads from CHF) and to improve the article's reference style. The Philadelphia Inquirer gave us a nice review last year.

Medals Awarded : The awards program at the Chemical Heritage Foundation recognizes superior accomplishments in chemistry and related sciences. If someone else created pages for awards such as the Othmer Gold Medal, we have information on the recipients of this and other awards. This list gives a subset of the most significant CHF-related award winners. Current press releases can be found at News and Press; older materials may have been archived.
CHF members can add information about medals received on the pages of the recipients, since this is valued information indicating notability.

Images from CHF's flickr collections[edit]

Selected image sets already released on CHF's Flickr account could be moved to Wikimedia Commons for use in articles. Check the license on the image to see if it is under a shareable (CC-BY) license before moving. I would suggesting working with sets that involve books and objects, rather than people and events, since people attending events may have signed photograph release forms specific to that event. Flickr images may be lower resolution than the original images in the archives.
