Introduction to contentious topics[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Request reason:

I want to start off by apologising to the Editors and Admins for my disruptive behaviour. I am very new to Wikipedia and have deliberately taken a week off to familiarise myself with the rules and reflect on the mistakes I have made. I understand that I was blocked because of my treatment of Wikipedia as a social media website instead of an encyclopedia and my refusal to "get the point" when directed to the appropriate avenues for my greivances; for example I was repeatedly directed to RSN when I brought up the validity of sources, yet due to my poor understanding of the rules I did not listen and continued treating Wikipedia as a social media website. I did not understand that bringing up the political affiliations of other Editors during a content dispute counted as 'personal attacks' per Wikipedia's rules and was wrong in doing so. As I was reading the rules I became increasingly aware of my mistakes and am very embarassed by my behaviour. On hindsight, whatever my intentions were at the time, due to my lack of understanding of the rules, I now know that I was 'trying to right great wrongs'. Wikipedia can oftentimes seem like a cold place and I perceieved this in the wrong way. I am asking for a second chance, after reading the rules I now understand the encyclopedic standards of this project and why it is necessary. I will not make the same mistake again. I am an ardent Indian history enthusiast and can contribute effectively in areas regarding South Asian historiography. Uproot Tyranny (talk) 02:45, 1 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

You have demonstrated, on the contrary, that you cannot contribute effectively in areas regarding South Asian historiography. Realistically, I don't see any possibility of an unblock without a WP:TOPICBAN in that area. That would allow you to edit non-contentious areas for a while and only after you have built up a substantial record of constructive edits elsewhere would you appeal to have the topic ban lifted. Request reason:

Hello. I am happy to have the topic ban per the last unblock request. Would appreciate instructions on how I could appeal it after as I do not know. I do want to note, however, that I edited the talk page of a very specific Punjabi individual during a highly controversial time-period (Individual had just been arrested/on the run.) and am requesting consideration for a more specific topic ban instead of the entirety of South Asian history. I realise, though, that I am in absolutely no position to make any demands and am happy with whatever punishment is meted out. Thank you. Uproot Tyranny (talk) 10:49, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Blocks and topic bans are not a punishment, but a means to prevent disruption to Wikipedia. After a time(usually six months to a year, depending, or a certain number of edits) they can be appealled to the admin noticeboard. Agreeing to a topic ban is a start, but you will then need to tell us what edits you intend to make instead. 331dot (talk) 15:26, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
