Excessive linking[edit]

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. In your recent edit to Taj Mahal, you added links to an article which did not add content or meaning, or repeated the same link several times throughout the article. Please see Wikipedia's guideline on links to avoid overlinking. Thank you. Greswik 19:05, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Excessive linking and referencing[edit]

Dear Universe=atom, Your enthusiasm is appreciated, but your linking (in Taj Mahal) and referencing (on the India page) are both excessive. Please read WP:MOS for a guide to editing. Thanks! Fowler&fowler«Talk» 17:18, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your post, but your linking is excessive. As a new comer, you should first read WP:MOS, rather than frenetically linking everything in sight. All your edits on the India page and on Taj Mahal have now been reverted and the latter caused a lot of headache. If you persist, it will be considered vandalism. Also, please don't leave any more messages on my talk page; bring it up on the relevant article talk page(s). Thanks. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 18:28, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for telling me. From now on, as I learn new rules on Wikipedia, I shall try to be more careful in what I wikilink. Thank you again; it is by the telling of others that I know my mistakes on Wikipedia. Universe=atom 14:22, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blanking Your Own Talk Page[edit]

Dear Universe=atom,

It is generally considered bad form to blank (or delete content from) your own talk page, unless there is offensive language in a post. The usual custom on WP is to archive post, when a large number has accumulated, not to delete them as you did here. Thanks. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 11:21, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for telling me. Can you please revert my deletion, for I do not yet know how to do so? Universe=atom 11:41, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Universe=atom: Based on your request to Fowler&Fowler above, I have restored your talk page and included later comments. I hope this is what you wanted to happen. Please excuse this intrusion in your talk page, which was done in good faith and with a good will on my part.--Nemonoman 14:17, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikilinks[edit]

Your wikilinks in Taj Mahal were not in keeping with the Wiki standards. Please see the manual of style for guidelines. WP:MOS. Thank you.--Nemonoman 14:03, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Hi! I see you have been editing India-related articles quite a lot, and also have participated in WP:INCOTW nomination procedure. History of India will probably be next week's INCOTW. We hope to improve the article substantially. At present, the article is dingy and lacks inline citations. Please continue your edits, but please also read the wikipedia guidelines (as mentioned in previous posts in your talk pages).

Meanwhile, you can try editing Education in India which is this week's INCOTW. Here are some links you may be interested in:

Sock accounts ?[edit]

Hi Universe=Atom, Can you please let us know if you are also using the Johnsmithcba account since, as Fowler&fowler pointed out [1] your edit patterns are suspiciously similar, and are reminiscent of sockpuppeteer Nikkul ? Also your previous blanking of your user page and recent archiving of the Talk:India page (upto and including F&F's query), do not raise confidence. So, I request you to clarify once and for all, if or if not you are Nikkul and/or Johnsmithcba. I apologize for this seeming assumption of bad faith, but the India page has recently had a bad experience with sock-puppets and no one wants to go through that again. Thanks. Abecedare 18:09, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. There is no need for you to prove that you are not a sock-puppet(eer), since your edits themselves will sooner or later establish that clearly. Your statement is sufficient for me at the moment. Happy editing. Abecedare 18:26, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

{{fact}} tag removal[edit]

Can you explain your removal of the fact tag on India along with the misleading edit summary? Sarvagnya 18:32, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry I mistook you. Anyway, {{fact}} templates are used where you want the other editor to "show some proof". If there is any claim made in the article and you want to see the evidence for the claim, all you have to do is to type {{fact}} after the sentence in question. And the [citation needed] thing will appear when you click save. Here I was asking that the other editors show me evidence that the Indian muslim population was the second largest such in the world. Anyway, thanks for your understanding. Ping me if you need any help. You're doing a very good job. Sarvagnya 14:50, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to WP:India[edit]

Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the India WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every India article in Wikipedia.
  • Can you code? The automation department uses automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be tedious to do manually.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! — Lost(talk) 14:11, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your VandalProof Application[edit]

Dear Universe=atom,

Thank you for applying for VandalProof! (VP). As you may know, VP is a very powerful program, and in fact the just released 1.3 version has even more power. Because of this we must uphold strict protocols before approving a new applicant. Regretfully, I have chosen to decline your application at this time. The reason for this is that at this time you do not meet the minimum requirement of 250 edits to mainspace articles (see under main here). Please note it is nothing personal by any means, and we certainly welcome you to apply again soon. Thank you for your interest in VandalProof. Daniel 04:49, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Prejudice[edit]

Sorry, I got busy with other stuff and forgot to answer your post on my talk page. I don't have any prejudice against you. I only react to what people say or do on a page, not who they are (which in any case I don't know anything about). When you made the change on the India page which provided a link to all the names of India in different languages, I thought it was a good edit and I was quick to praise you. So, please don't think that I bear any ill-will against you (as a person). I don't. Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 21:48, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dont worry[edit]

I dont see where they accuse you of being a sock of KH. I dont think they're accusing you of being a sock of anybody else other than John. If you're innocent, dont worry about anything. I've been through baseless accusations myself. Several checkusers have been filed against me and several users have trolled on wikipedia including an admin have taken undue advantage of it in bad faith. You will just have to be thick-skinned about it and continue to edit in good faith and contribute to the project. Also dont be scared of anyone. Policies and guidelines govern all of us. So if somebody's being rude to you or if they're throwing around baseless accusations and calling you names etc., do not mince any words in pointing out to them that they are in violation of wiki policies. If they persist, report them to an admin or on WP:ANI, but avoid stooping to their levels and responding in kind. Ping me if you need any help. Sarvagnya 18:37, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, where did they call you my SOCK but suspect John is your sock(won't comment on it). Don't they know I wear only branded stuff.

On a serious note, nobody can bully you by calling you a sock without proof. If they do report them to a neutral admin. Suspicious ppl suspect everything.....that doesn't imply you need to worry about them. Let them do their work(ie. suspect) and you do your work(ie. edit). Don't let these issues stop you.But after this comment I am afraid they not further suspect 'I am Nikkul's sock' or 'he is my sock' or 'we are both socks of u' or 'you are a sock of both of us both' or 'you are a sock of me and i m a sock of Nikkul' 'or maybe I am a sock you and you are a sock of Nikkul' or 'we all our socks of someone else'.

But now I will have to keep distance from you and Nikkul especially. Man what am I saying. I am contradicting whatever I have just said above.

I'll talk to Fowler&Fowler abt this whole wrangle.KnowledgeHegemony 10:37, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Style edits[edit]

Hi U=A, I noticed that you often spell out centuries (eg. 18th-> eighteenth with edit summary "18th should be eighteenth"). Can you please clarify which wikipedia style guide you are following, since WP:DATE contains no such injunction, or even specify a preference, and gives examples for both uses ? Furthermore, you'll note that Eighteenth century is in fact a redirect to 18th century!

Note too that not using a serial comma is not a grammatical error and the wikipedia MoS allows its use/non-use as long as ambiguity is avoided. That aside, in this edit you changed the punctuation within quoted text, which is a no-no unless there is a strong justification for doing so (and even in that case the reader needs to be told that the quoted text has been tampered).

Finally note that according to WP:NUM#Numbers_in_words, "Whole numbers from zero to ten should be spelled out", while, "Numbers above ten may be written out if they are expressed in two or fewer words" (emphasis added). I point this out simply because your edit summary here was incorrect, even though the edit itself was fine.

Hope you'll treat the above comments as friendly pointers rather than admonishments. I just thought it would be better to explain my reasoning for undoing some of your edits in detail here, rather than in a 4-5 word edit summary. Cheers. Abecedare 19:10, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply and understanding. I should have also clarified in my earlier post that none of your edits (except the one that changed quoted text) are fundamentally "wrong" and I could see your good-faith reasoning behind each edit. However since wikipedia is edited by so many editors, following different grammatical conventions/traditions, it is usually best to follow the wikipedia manual of style whenever possible - else every editor trying to "correct" wikipedia articles according to their (justifiable) preference will only lead to revert wars, bruised egos and anarchy (as if, we don't have enough of those already! :-) ). Taj FPC and Wonders of the World[edit]

Hi, I noticed that someone had queried, "What wonders might that be?" in reference to the Taj Mahal (in the WP:FPC section). Although it is commonly said that the Taj (or the Great Wall of China) is one of the Seven Wonders, the more common Seven Wonders are the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (i.e. the seven wonders of classical antiquity), a list that did not include the Taj. You might want to change your post to one of the lists on the "Seven Wonders" page above to which the Taj does belong (Medieval, or Tourist). No big deal though. Your help desk message[edit]

Hello, I am a recent edits' patroller. While patrolling, I obviously come upon vandals, the edits of whom I of course revert. I was wondering, though, if I am allowed to give a warning to a vandal (such as the ones in Wp:vandal#Warnings) even though I am not an administrator. I was wondering this because on the warnings, it states that "...if you continue, you will be blocked..." Obviously, since I am not an admin, I do not have the ability to block users, but on the warnings, it looks that I can do so. So, am I allowed to give out these warnings? Also, please reply on my talk page instead of here. Thank you. Universe=atomTalkContributions 16:44, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology of your user name[edit]

Hi, i came across your page via FPC, and i thought i should point out a flaw in the 'Etymology' section of your user page. According to the law of conservation of matter, atoms are only preserved for basic chemical reactions. Once you get into nuclear reactions ( which i thought you guys would be familiar with ;), see India_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction ), this does not apply and atoms are split all the time. Anyway i just though i'd let you know.

I've noticed on many FACs that you advise the addition of a See also section, which goes against the WP:MOS, specifically WP:LAYOUT#See also. Ideally, any links worth having should be incorporated into the text, and many well-written articles have no See also section for that reason; your advice to add a See also section is confusing and often incorrect. What exactly do you mean by classifying some of the references as Chinese? I know a couple of notes are in chinese, but the english versions are in the main article. I just moved the chinese versions to the notes to cut down on space. I removed the chinese formatting (Chinese: EXAMPLE) because it seemed that some editors had problems with it taking up too much space.(Ghostexorcist 02:25, 30 June 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Ice palace. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. Geologyguy (talk) 15:36, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request Suggestions[edit]

I looked you up from Wikiproject India, in which I have enlisted myself. I have been spending some time bringing this article up to par and I have done a lot of work today. Would you take a look into the article and suggest the ways in which it can be expanded (I have a list of mathematical, medical, and engineering related innovations but am really lacking in the machines, astronomy, physics etc. fields) and made better? I want to bring it up to the level of this article and then work on the Science and technology in ancient India (rename it 'History of science and technology in India') article and then perhaps add a section like this one in the India article.

Thanks in advance, South Block (talk) 09:11, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Main page appearance: Saturn[edit]

This is a note to let the main editors of Saturn know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 4, 2011. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 4, 2011. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Saturn, photographed in July 2008

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest planet in the Solar System, after Jupiter, with an average radius about nine times larger than the Earth's. Saturn is named after the Roman god Saturn, equated to the Greek Cronus (the Titan father of Zeus), the Babylonian Ninurta and the Hindu Shani. Saturn's astronomical symbol (♄) represents the Roman god's sickle. Along with Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune, Saturn is a gas giant. Together, these four planets are sometimes referred to as the Jovian planets, meaning "Jupiter-like". Saturn has a ring system that is divided into nine continuous and three discontinuous main rings (arcs), consisting mostly of ice particles with a smaller amount of rocky debris and dust. Sixty-two known moons orbit the planet; fifty-three are officially named. This does not include the hundreds of "moonlets" within the rings. Titan, Saturn's largest and the Solar System's second largest moon (after Jupiter's Ganymede), is larger than the planet Mercury and is the only moon in the Solar System to retain a significant atmosphere. WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest[edit]

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
