Opera is a very active, medium-sized project with more than 4,400 articles - it's smaller than the mega-projects like Music etc, but it is also larger than closely-focused projects such as Richard Wagner. We have a discussion page linked to the main project page where you signed in. Participants work together on articles, see for example the Composer of the month, Singer of the month and Can you help? features on the Project page. Please take part! The scope of the project is huge: 400 years of history, many countries and many languages. For that reason the editing style of opera articles can sometimes be complicated, so we have detailed guidelines for formatting on the project page, covering the tricky points like opera titles, capitalization, categories etc. Please don't be too bothered if you make a few mistakes at first - we all went through the same thing when we started! Some opera editors use reference books such the New Grove Dictionary of Opera, New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, the Oxford Dictionary of Opera and the Viking Opera Guide. These are helpful for checking facts and providing the essential references required on Wikipedia. It's great if you can get access to these books. However if you don't have access to books, there are still many other ways you can contribute to the project: compiling lists of recordings, writing synopses of your favourite operas using CD librettos, translating texts from other languages, picture researching, writing biographies of contemporary singers from online sources etc etc - and see also the To do list for articles needing attention. Opera discographies

• Yes, they are useful additions, but could I ask you to please watch out for a couple of things as you create them. They're coming thick and fast, and I'm having trouble keeping up with the clean-up.;-)

1. Make sure you use the same capitalization, spelling and diacritics as used in the main article about the opera. e.g. La traviata not La Traviata, Die Entführung aus dem Serail not Entfuhrung aus dem Serail. More here
2. Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style, make sure you add at least a brief lead sentence with a link back to the main article to contextualize it, e.g. [1]. A reader unfamiliar with opera will come across something like Il trovatore discography and not have clue what it refers to.
3. Add {{DEFAULTSORT}}. Otherwise, La traviata discography ends up on the Category:Opera discographies page under "L" instead of "T". here's an expample of how to do it: [2]
4. Link the discography from the main article (in the Recordings section) with "See also X discography" or "See X discography". Otherwise it gets tagged by bots as an "orphan", e.g.[3]
5. Make sure you "close" the tables so that references sections can be added. The tables should end with:

Another point. If a discography already exists on the main opera article page, can you incorporate into your page? We don't want to have two competing discographies. Also it may be worth mentioning that I don't think WP is using ASIN (Amazon numbers) — so if you see them they can be deleted. Reg. --Kleinzach 23:49, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

NPOV/Vandalism using category:homophobia

Your edits to Jerry Falwell, Ronald Reagan, Pat Robertson, Don't ask, don't tell, United States Army, United States Marine Corps, United States Navy, United States Air Force, United States Coast Guard, and Ian Paisley represent a non-neutral pont of view, and have been reverted. Simply because you do not agree with the policies of these people/organizations does not mean they represent a homophobic view. Because Wikipedia strives to be as neutral as possibly, only those people or groups who are deemed homophobic through consensus should be included in such a possibly offensive category. Also, I'd like to note that adding the military under such a label is quite offensive: you have no idea what each member may or may not think about LGBT rights; to say that the whole of the Unites States Military is homophobic is unfair and quite rude. The edits to The Holocaust and Adolf Hitler are a bit less black an white, and you should discuss the catgeorization on the talk page, because I am sure many other editors will not agree with you.

I understand that it was not your intent to vandalise or insult anyone, and you have a pretty clean edit history. Perhaps you can learn from this: potentially controversial edits should always be discussed before they are made. WP:BOLD only extends so far, and should never be used to justify defying consensus or NPOV. bahamut0013^words_deeds 10:32, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

I think you missed my point: no matter how much logic you may have on your side, people are going to disagree with just about everyone. Vandalism of United States Coast Guard Article

Your edit of the U.S. Coast Guard article is both non-productive and juvenile. Please contribute only helpful and authoritative information to this article. If you feel that the Coast Guard is indeed "homophobic" then do research on the subject and please include it in the article with your references. Having served in the Coast Guard, I can assure you that the organization is not "homophobic" and is merely following the intent of regulations set down by Congress and executive orders required by the President.

I can't speak for other Coast Guardsmen, but I can tell you that if the President directs me to quit following the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that is currently in force; them I would have no problem in following that order.

It is counter-productive for you to vandalize in the name of gay rights or whatever, it just gives opponents ammunition to use against your cause. People resent being pushed. Cuprum17 (talk) 19:51, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Gia Carangi as bisexual

Hello, TheGeniusPrince. We really are not supposed to put people into categories such as Category:Bisexual people without that sexual orientation being confirmed for that person. As the Gia Carangi article says, her sexual orientation is disputed; no one knows which of the two sexual orientations she identified by for sure (or if she even identified by a sexual orientation for herself), which is why she is sometimes listed as lesbian and other times as bisexual. Rebecca (1940 film)

I'm wondering why you felt it necessary to add a category to this film that suggested it had LGBT content. As near as I can tell from a reading of the article itself, there's no suggestion anywhere that any of the characters is gay. Is there something that you're suggesting is in the film that isn't written about in the article? Perhaps you could provide a citation that would back this up. Well, I definitely understand why for you the motif of sexual attraction is there. If this isn't going to be categorized as original research, though, it must have a citation from an arm's-length third-party authoritative source to back this up. It doesn't matter whether or not I (or anyone else) agrees with your opinion; Wikipedia runs on reliable sources. If there's something I can do to help you with this, let me know. Glad to see that there is an appropriate citation. I think the link you provided should be added to the article, because without it the category is unsupported by evidence and is liable to be removed by another editor. I'm not sure exactly what part of the article will be best, but I think you will know better than I. (My own interest came from the link to the screenwriters and not the film per se.) Pete Wentz on List of bisexual people

Hi. I noticed that you reverted my edit to the List of bisexual people. I'd like to point out to you that Wentz does not use the label of bisexual to describe himself, and he also made it clear that he was not interested in going below the waist in his encounters with men. I therefore removed him from the list on the basis that his statements were quite ambiguous, and that he is a living person and that the article is bound by the rules pertaining to biographies of living people. I reverted your addition of a cat to this article as the parent cat which it belongs states Articles about notable LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) people who have publicly declared their sexual orientation or gender identity, or whose sexual orientation or gender identity is known and not debated by historians.
