About tagging Daniel LaPlante article

Hello, Sun Creator! I just edited the article about Daniel LaPlante and I saw that on 19 November 2019, you added an "underlinked" tag to this article. This confused me because I find overlinking to be a notable problem in Wikipedia articles, and I lean strongly to deleting hyperlinks that I think are not needed and not helpful. (If you choose to follow what I did today, you may check my contributions, especially the section I added to user Eat Your Makeup's talk page.)

I probably don't fully understand the intention behind tagging an article as underlinked. If you have the time and inclination, you could explain it to me. For the LaPlante article, though, I think that I was right to remove a number of hyperlinks. - Jkgree (talk) 17:23, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

@Jkgree: See MOS:UNDERLINK and MOS:LINKSTYLE. The article is still underlinked IMO, specifically convicted murder in lead sentence per MOS:CONTEXTBIO, although it's fine that the tag is removed. The tag was added when the article only had one link and more text then currently. Sun Creator(talk) 22:36, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Turtles, terrapins and tortoises

"In UK English, we do not "lump" turtles, terrapins and tortoises as they do in US English: hence, "land turtle" is "tortoise"; we use "terrapin" (no idea what US English uses!); and "sea turtles" are simply "turtles" in UK."
Do you have a modern reliable source (post 2000 and not a rehash of older content) for the above? As a Brit myself the experience is that people don't use terrapin but sometimes use tortoise if they are from the George of Blue Peter era (1980s), or if they are younger use turtle because of Ninja turtle and later Squirtle from Pokémon. I've only once heard the term terrapin used and that was by an Irish lady. Basically, Brits don't have any native turtles, terrapins or tortoises so all they know is from the TV. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 23:11, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Sun Creator—long time! I have an answer to your question:

  • Howard Innes, 2009. Britain's Reptiles and Amphibians: A guide to the reptiles and amphibians of Great Britain, Ireland and the Channel Islands. Old Basing: WILDGuides.

In particular, see Contents page and p.84.

He uses Red-eared Terrapin for Red-eared Slider, though I see no need to defy long-established use; and European Pond Tortoise for Eurpean Pond Terrapin/turtle—strange choice given his use of "terrapin" in the subheading.

There's also:

  • Jeroen Speybroeck, Wouter Beukema, Bobby Bok and Jan Van Der Voort, 2016. Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of Britain and Europe. London and New York: Bloomsbury.

See pp. 6, 197, 206.

They use European Pond Terrapin.

Thanks—GRM (talk) 17:01, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:Baenoidea indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read!
