Naming conventions[edit]

The article you created, Revd Dr John Burns, Dr John Burns, and Dr Allan Burns do not conform to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people). Do you know what their middle names are? Burns biographies[edit]

Don't worry about the middle names if you can't find them. The current naming of the articles is consistent with Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people). I would recommend at this point not to worry as much about adding details to the articles. It would be better to review Wikipedia:notability (people) and Wikipedia:citing sources to be sure you get these articles referenced in such a way that confirms notability. Some other editors may not be very patient and may put some of these articles up for deletion. Burns[edit]

Hello Shipsview. Yes, the dates are now left unlinked throughout wikipedia. I can understand your confusion, there was a time when all dates were linked, for a number of reasons. This practice has now been discontinued, but many articles still have the dates linked, pending someone finding and unlinking them, as is happening sporadically. So now you can save a bit of time and not link them. (WP:MOSDATE has more on this). Yes, I have an interest in shipping, I'd be glad to help out if I can, let me know how you get on! Darnaway Castle[edit]

No problem. Shipsview. One problem I noticed is that the references don't have enough information. WP:CITET has templates you can copy and paste in. Only fields you fill in will show up. Re: Rannoch Barracks[edit]

Hi Shipsview. To change article titles, you have to "move" the page. To do this, click on the arrow next to the star, close to the edit tab, and click the Move link. You just type in the page title you want and give a reason, and mostly it will work. There are some exceptions, see Wikipedia:Moving a page for full details. Interesting article by the way, though I changed the lead a little as most of the article is about the actual barracks rather than Lord Pearson's place in the country. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Cakemuir Castle[edit]

Hello Shipsview, and thanks for another worthy addition to Wikipedia, Cakemuir sounds like an interesting place. It helps to be a bit more specific with references, so instead of linking to a website's "front page", like http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/, make a link to the page with the actual information you are citing, in this case [1]. You can use the template {{cite web}} to make this easier and it looks better too. Same for books: try to add details such as ISBN and page numbers, again there is a {{cite book}} template to help. Clan articles[edit]

Hi the reason we do not have lists of people with the given surname or even wikipedia books of people with a particular surname in a Scottish clan article is firstly just because they have that surname does not necessarily mean they should be associated with that Scottish clan. Also there are pages purposely for listing people of specific surnames, such as :Douglas (surname) and Douglas (disambiguation). Hi Shipsview!
Just few little things. I noticed that this article included some text that appeared to be somewhat similar to the "www.douglashistory.co.uk" mention of him.
Also, "Archibald Douglas (d. 1741)" doesn't seem to me to be the best of article titles. There are of course a number of notable Archibald Douglas's. Some of them include their styles. Does this particular Archibald Douglas attract a style? I would greatly appreciate your help with this.

Shirt58, I inherited the article title as it was already a link, though there was no article. I agree it is an unhelpful title. He was 13th Laird of Cavers. Do you want to change it?

Sorry[edit]

You had a page in your sandbox which stated that "this article is still copyright and requires a re-write before publication".

All pages on Wikipedia are considered 'published' as soon as they're saved. They're publicly viewable, and remain like that until/unless they get deleted. As such, you cannot leave text like that on a Wikipedia page, even if it's in your userspace. For a few hours, sure. For a few days, well... maybe, if you're actively working on it. copyright vs cut and paste[edit]

wikipedia does not want cut and pasted text from somewhere else. Furthermore, even if a copyright on the original work has expired it is quite possible that someone else renewed the copyright. However, an editor qualified in copyright issues will review and give us the final disposition. Why risk exposing wikipedia to infamy of copyright. Do not know, I am not a lawyer. Typically though they do not want us to cut and paste stuff from somewhere else, anyways. That's because copyright issues are thorny but wikipedia lawyers have other reasons not to take cut-and-paste - beside copy right. It is tricky - they do not want original research, but they also dont want cut and paste. So what it leaves us is with writing stuff in our own words but referencing it heavily to external sources. Morton Castle[edit]

Now just hang on a minute. It appears from the info in the Morton Castle page that it belonged the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Douglas Earls of Morton. And I would be interested to know when it became known as Morton Castle ? was it under their occupation ? Yes the article says that the earldom was named after a different Morton, but it seems more than likely that the castle was named after the earldom, given the four earls. It seems a little too much of a coincidence for the castle to have been named Morton but not because it was a seat of the Earls of Morton. And where are your sources ? Citation styles[edit]

Thank you for this edit (Revision as of 21:02, 6 June 2016) to the article William Douglas of Balgillo. A couple of points though:

  1. Please do not change the consistent style of citing in an article (WP:CITEVAR). In this case the style was short inline citations linked to long citations in a "References" section, with the long citations using the template {{Citation}} (in style Citation Style 2) unlike {{Cite web}} which you used which is in Citation Style 1).
  2. If you use the website https://archive.org you will usually be linking to a book. If you do so WP:CITE recommends that you include page numbers and do not include access-date (no need to a book) so rather than creating a link like this one:

Alan Inverclyde[edit]

I'm afraid 'endow' implies he gifted the buildings. Check Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre. He was president of the SCPR, which purchased the Hills Hotel in Largs (it was never owned by him, nor was it called 'Inverclyde House'). They then named it after him when he died in office in 1957. Similarly, Inverclyde was the Chairman of the British Sailors' Society, and the Inverclyde Centre in Greenock was a new build, for and by the BSS. However, you removed material that is not subject to copyright, and cited a website, finds.org.uk, which I had not previously seen, nor indeed been aware of. The interesting point here is that finds.org.uk, which is, I think, a subsidiary of the British Museum, is a CC-BY site, and if I had used their material, it would have been easy for me (or you) to include an appropriate citation. Drysdale and septs[edit]

Hi, yes, in answer to your question I think there should only be a link to the Drysdale sept if it goes to a page specifically about the family who were a sept of Clan Douglas. There would have been people called Drysdale, not only in other countries, but in other parts of Scotland who were not actually part of the Clan Douglas. This applies to most sept names in fact. Illeana Douglas[edit]

She most definitely was born in 1961, but even public records say '65 which means she lies about her age on legal docs. This will be hard to prove. FWIW, the birthplace she gives appears to be a lie as well, since there's no record of an Illeana Hesselberg in The Massachusetts Birth Index [2].
