Thanks Ryan, that is high praise indeed! Thanks for your encouraging comments. At one point I actually left Wikipedia for about, oh, I think an hour until Jimbo Wales emailed me and gently told me to pull my head in :-) I must say though, that after having read the text of the Patriot Act my mind has gone somewhat numb. However, if I may be so bold, the Patriot Act is neither so bad nor so good as either the proponents or detractors are spouting on about. Certainly there are aspects to the Act that aren't terribly good (several sections of Title II need amending, and in fact this may have been done by the Patriot Act reauthorization Act - I haven't checked), but a large number of the sections are very much benign.

I think Slate put it best:

"Since almost nobody has read the legislation, much of what we think we know about it comes third-hand and spun. Both advocates and opponents are guilty of fear-mongering and distortion in some instances." (source)

Well.... everyone's different, but here's my criteria for voting someone in to adminship:

Makes a good faith attempt to get an article to FA status
Reverts vandalism
Has at least 2,000 edits
Been on the site for at least 6 months
Is patient, and an all-round nice person (very important!)
Happy to participate
(if at all possible, not crucial) has dealt with disputes tactfully, and kept their head.

So... you are almost there, but you have a little way to go. The big one is attempting to get an article to FA status. For nice-guy factor and enthusiasm, you can't be beat :-) Now get to work getting an article to FA status, or at least get started on it (even good status is great in my book)! - Ta bu shi da yu 19:29, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

I had almost forgotten about that request, came across a few such one line stubstubs while working on subdividing the writer stubs about half a year back and requested a bunch of translations for the ones that had sizable articles in other languages. Explanation

In your objection on the United States nomination, you stated how the lead is not comprehensive. Just to make it clear, the lead is suppose to be a short summary, and not every war the country went through should be mentioned. It did talk about the U.S. expansion to the present day 50 states and many overseas territories, before it jumped into the mentioning of the World Wars.--Ryz05 _t 13:14, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Chicago climate data

I saw your comment about the climate norms in the Chicago article. I was not the source of those numbers, and I agree they don't match what I've seen elsewhere. I was the source of the avg wind speeds used in the Climate of Chicago article. For that article I used data compiled by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC, part of U.S. Dept. of Commerce). In my opinion, all Wikipedia climate data on U.S. cities should use NCDC data, since that's the "official" government source.

NCDC's policy is to average the last 30 years data, and republish every 10 years. That's one potential cause of confusion, as today's climatological norms for any given city represent the 1971-2000 period. The wikipedian who contributed the Chicago weather table might have been using a different 30 year interval, or maybe an average of the whole meteorological record (130 years or so).

To be honest, I'm not really bothered by the fact that the article's data looks wrong. All weather averages should be taken with a grain of salt. Even before there was any talk of global warming, I think most climatologists recognized that weather is so chaotic and unpredictable that the word "normal" is misleading.InNuce 18:33, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

How long do you think the lead-in should be? You also mentioned sections that were too short. Can you give me an idea of what sections you were referring to?

Tetris Attack

About the Tetris Attack edits I made, well, I was assuming good faith on your part, Ryan, but I merely just disagreed with some of the changes you made. Sorry if it rubbed you the wrong way, I'm just a big stickler for grammar. Switching between British and American English spellings can, often, and (in this case) does cause edit wars. In essense, the entire thing is pointless--switching the spelling doesn't usually change the meaning anyway. I only switched these spellings back so I could easily make one whole revert (sorry if I was being lazy!). So that's why I switched neighboring and levelling back. I had to switch the semi-colon back because you were using it to separate a dependent clause from the rest of the sentence, and you're supposed to use a comma for this. A semi-colon is not the correct thing to put there. Microsoft Word's spell checker isn't always the best resource for big, obscure words such as "replayability". Try typing a chemistry report--it tells you that every other word is wrong, it seems! Replayability is an acceptable word according to another Wikipedia article. Hmm... well, one idea would be to move the information about the Koopa Bros. to the part in the "characters" section where they're listed and to move information that concerns other games to articles about those games. Good idea, and rename "Other notes" to "Notes". The endless "no english" or "short article" is a bit silly. You need to make sure to understand enough of the intention of the requester to be sure when to remove the article, though. Simcity 4

The reason I removed the section is that it is empty. The guidelines for stubs and stub sections are that you don't create it unless you have some sort of minimal expansion on the title. As it stands, the section could be pretty ambiguous - so anyone who edits it may put the wrong information in it (regardless of comments hidden in it). Surely if someone has information about the subject they would create the section anyway. I still disagree that it should be there - it adds nothing to the article at present, we aren't supposed to be using sections as 'for rent' signs IMO. -Localzuk ^(talk) 08:07, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.
