Roadtrip photos

Did you happen to get any photos that would help illustrate U.S. Route 2 in Michigan. The article is at A-Class Review and headed to FAC at some point later this year. Sadly, the article, for all of its length, is woefully under-illustrated. Imzadi 1979 → 01:22, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

I have MANY photos taken on US2 in Michigan. I see that I took 2 of the current photos and I had photographed the other one too but didn't want to duplicate. What else would you like to see? I photographed US2 traveling east from Escanaba to St. Ignace just a few months ago. Here's a few interesting ones (at least to me) from late August 2011:
  1. Intersection with M-117 with construction barrels lining the road (US2 sign is moderately visible)
  2. Just east of there, several nice shots showing asphalt overlay with the road. The westbound lane is higher than the eastbound
  3. I hadn't know that the Cut River Bridge was historic but I have a nice shot looking down the center line
  4. Several pretty shots showing the road hugging the shore of Lake Michigan with the Lake taking almost half of the shot
  5. Several pretty shots showing the sand dunes with little Lake Michigan or dunes on both sides of the road
  6. One with lots of traffic: a group of cars coming toward the camera, one ahead, and about 4 parked on the right (people where out swimming on the beaches who are not visible))
  7. The Mystery Spot sign (probably not since it's blatant advertising)
  8. If you're looking at attractions near the road, I have a shot ready of the Father Marquette National Memorial
  9. A bunch of photos along that route of the tiny communities like Brevort
  10. Then traveling westbound: Looking north on I-75 of the sign for US2
  11. Looking west at tree-lined road
  12. Looking west at sand dunes
  13. Looking west at sand dunes on the left and Lake Michigan on the right
  14. Nice one in Brevort with the US2 sign pretty prevalent (this one for sure)
  15. A bunch of beach shots taken at the park along US2 for the northernmost point of Lake Michigan
  16. Small sign entering Schoolcraft County
  17. Then in July: An excellent shot of the co-sign of US2 and US41 looking west in Escanaba
  18. Shots of the 65 miles per hour segment north of Gladstone
  19. Split with US41 in that same area
  20. Intersection with M-183 showing lots of woods lining the road
  21. The bridge in Manistique
  22. I like File:NorwayWisconsinUS2.jpg

Let's see, the Cut River Bridge photo could be good for Cut River Bridge. Some of the Lake Michigan ones would be good for the RD or the "Memorial designations and tourist routes" sections. If I could get a different second photo for the "Eastern segment" section, that could allow me to shift the eastern terminus photo over to the History section. The 65-mph segment in the Gladstone area would be good for the "Post-Interstate era" subsection in the history.
Basically, I'm trying to have a photo in each of the major section/subsections of the article. I probably don't look for a photo related to the "Indian trail through early statehood" subsection because it it so short and Business route already has an infobox for "visual interest" to break up the "wall of text". Did you say that you had a photo of the new, plain mileposts along M-185 on Mackinac Island? Mitchazenia (talk · contribs) and I are planning on sending that article to FAC after we do some touch-ups on it. Any photos that you have would be helpful. I uploaded File:Mile 1 Marker M-185 Mackinac Island.jpg of Mile Marker 1 and File:M-185 Downtown Mackinac Island Michigan.jpg of M-185 in downtown Mackinac Island. I have a photo of people biking on the back side of the island but I didn't upload it. I have a shot of the road as a street in the outer edges of the city with no people on it. Also, there are a LOT of historic places on the route and I think they should be listed for completeness since the article is at the highest level. I have a panning photo of a carriage on the route right in front of the Mission church. Royalbroil 02:32, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
I think that the historic sites should all be listed in the RD, but it's possible that we missed one or two of the minor ones. I added File:Mackinac Island Michigan Carriage Mission Church M-185.jpg with the carriage, File:M-185 Edge of Mackinac Island Michigan.jpg of the street with no people on it, and File:M-185 Biking near Mile Marker1.jpg. Rockwood, Wisconsin

Hi-I started the Rockwood, Wisconsin article. I also started one on Shoto, Wisconsin for I noticed a photo of Shoto Creek. I like doing articles on the unincorporated communities in Wisconsin; each community is unique. Right now I am going through a case of political burnout and Wikipedia has nothing to do with it. My area just had a recall election Wisconsin Senate and now we are going to have a special election to fill a Wisconsin Assembly seat. I haven't been involved with DYK since it was totally changed to something unrecognizable several months ago by the FA people. That section was my main involvement with April Fool's Day. State traveler

Thanks for the barnstar, but you may have awarded it prematurely. Unfortunately, Google Maps doesn't yield the same distance in both directions. If you go from the survey marker to Ft. Robinson, it gives a distance of 577 miles; but if you go in the opposite direction, it comes up with a route that's only 552 miles long. I think User:Visitor7 beat me fair and square on this one. (If you read the description text at the Commons page, it sounds as if he really had to work to do it: the Wheeler Ridge site took some getting to.) Ammodramus (talk) 22:58, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the recent photos

But I have a favor to ask. Can you double check that a photo is appropriate to the article before adding it? I removed the photo you added to U.S. Route 131 because it was inappropriately placed in the article. The section where you added it was about the early history of that highway. In fact, the paragraph of text next to contained content about the Indian trail in the area that preceded US 131 and even a time when Mark Twain rode along the predecessor to the highway in the 19th century. A photo from 2011 showing the modern terminus doesn't fit. The section where it would fit already has a photo though, so for now, I can't find a replacement location for it.

As for the photo in U.S. Route 31, that doesn't show US 31 at all, just I-75, so it's not going to fit there either. I did leave the one from Bayview in U.S. Route 31 in Michigan alone because I'll move it into the route description at a later date when I rewrite and expand that section. However, photo captions don't get terminal punctuation unless they are a full sentence, so I struck the period. Imzadi 1979 → 07:00, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

I keep getting more and more upset with seeing how my time has been completely wasted on uploading these highway photos. It takes a long time to identify, crop/cleanup, identify/add categories and upload these files on my slow connection. Instead of moving them where they belong, you just remove them. I'll just upload the city photos since they'll probably survive. My time is WAY too precious to be wasting hours upon hours. Royalbroil 01:17, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
I would have moved the US 131 photo, if there was room for it in the article. As it is, there isn't. It's still linked from the Commons box . M-6 has several photos that aren't in the article, but they still add to the article indirectly. So please keep uploading them, but if the subject highway isn't in the photo, it isn't going to fit well, that's all. That, and it helps if the subject of the photo fits with the section where it's added, especially on the higher assessment levels. Imzadi 1979 → 01:23, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

It depends on the outcome of the discussion. You are able to participate in the discussion, but with it likely being kept you're probably better off being quiet. The default is to keep if there is no consensus.

Blocking an IP address

Royal, there's a delinquent anonymous user who keeps spamming the 2012 Nationwide and Truck Series pages with a fake TS Motorsports team with Ricky Carmichael. I was wondering if you could block IP's 201.184.66.45, 68.44.14.18, 201.239.131.12, 201.184.34.72. There are probably other IP's, but I think the NASCAR section needs some more admins after this recent attackGaeaman787 (talk) 17:32, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Royalbroil,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.


Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. I know, I agree - this diff definitely had major cleanup issues. And it was buried in a myriad of bad attempts at getting the article started. But that particular diff did assert several points of WP:MUSICIAN which was my point. I wouldn't have expected you to look through so many diffs to find the only low-quality diff like I did. Buffalo Shore Estates, Wisconsin

Hi-The Town of Packwaukee released a comprehensive plan for the town in 2005 and the document refered to Buffalo Shore Estates as one of the unincorporated areas in the town. I am not sure how to link the document to the Buffalo Shore Estates article. A private firm prepared the plan for the town. Buffalo Shore Estates was the name used in the town's comprehensive plan. The Wisconsin Historical Society-Dictionary of Wisconsin History also refer to Buffalo Shore Esates. The society got the information from the GNIS. The name of Buffalo Shore Estates is in the comprehensive plan of the Town of Packwaukee. I still not sure how to link the document to the article. I am concern about copyright concerns. I added a citation about the comprehensive plan to the article-Buffalo Shore Estates was mentioned 3 times including a new road the town is planning to connect Buffalo Shore Estates with. The Town of Packwaukee is looking at the possibility of becoming a village. I keep telling people reading the legal notices in the newspaper can be interesting especially if you know what you are looking for. The same can be said about legal documents. The whole town would be incorporated. This happen in Bristol, Wisconsin in Kenosha County. Part of the town became a village and then annexed most of the town except for a small section that was annexed by the village of Pleasant Prairie also in Kenosha County. Also there is talk about Marshfield, Wisconsin and surrounding area becoming Wisconsin's 73rd county. However, nothing has been going on with that one. Now it's not about the writing skills... And no, he's not doing the "best" he can at all. Creating 5-6-7 articles within 2-3 hours, full of errors, fake info, and other stuff is not doing the best, in my opinion. It is being useless, dumb, pathetic and obsessive. It's quite obvious that he's a no-lifer with some sort of disorder, probably needs to fulfill some sort of emptiness by creating/editing articles in that crappy way... I feel kinda sorry for saying something "horrible" like that but well... ok, it's none of my business if he has no life or whatever, and actually, yes, he can create/edit 1000000000 articles a day, but at least he could do it the right way... I think there is a limit for "lameness" and he has already exceeded that limit for a long... long time, that's why he got blocked several times I think. I know that he edits stuff about NASCAR, but I'm not into it, so I never looked at those articles, which is normal, right? If I am not into a subject, if I don't know sh*t about it, I simply don't "mess" with it. I can give you hundreads and hundreads of examples about his extremely irresponsible and totally non-sense edits... and I really mean it. Sadly, he's extremely LAME, that's all, and I got tired. I don't respect him as a Wikipedia editor, he will not be missed. photos Auroraville, Wisconsin

Hi-Do you have any photos about Auroraville, Wisconsin in Waushara County? Auroraville is in the town of Aurora, Waushara County, Wisconsin and there is a photo of the town in the article. Hi-I had to revert an editor's changes to the Steinthal, Wisconsin article. The editor added info and a photo about some lodge in Steinthal. I looked over her online yesterday and saw no reason to expand the article when she clearly fails the sports notability standard. Upham House - Wood County NRHP

Hi, Royal. I undid your change, moving the Frank Upham House photo back to the Upham House Historic District. The Frank Upham House is different from the Governor William Upham House, a.k.a. the Upham Mansion. I'd like to put up a photo of the William Upham House, but a man there (well-meaning, no doubt) told me not to. So I'll leave that for someone else.

Hey, it's interesting to consider the progress of development of Wikipedia coverage of NRHP historic sites in Wisconsin. Here is a July 6, 2008 version of List of RHPs in WI. I put in a bunch of work "table-izing" to get it to this August 4, 2008 version and more to bring it to this version of 17 February 2010 (plus all the split out list-articles for Waupaca County, etc., etc.). You made many edits before and during and since adding a lot of pics and detail; my work was on the structure. Maybe you didn't really notice it much, but I thought I did a great job during that process with recording and then addressing many "research issues" that took into account details added by you and others previous to the table-izing process, rather than obliterating that info. And I have done most of the work setting up NRHP disambiguation pages nation-wide, which enabled many semi-automated edits properly disambiguating the names for Wisconsin NRHPs. I dunno, I think we shouldn't completely forget about all the past work, which laid the groundwork for more editors to contribute into a great framework. Everything I did was towards being friendly, towards making it easy for many new and experienced editors to collaborate and absorb new energy and create new understanding of our heritage. I do wonder though, what happened; I would have thought there would be a lot more activity since, and am sorry to see so few articles in Wisconsin developed. I hope you are friendly to new editors who show up and want to try to contribute. There's nothing I hate more than seeing bullying of new editors, or experienced editors for that matter, for whatever they didn't do, when in fact they are contributing, making positive improvements that add up in a big way eventually. It's awfully easy to criticize and to kill off any developing community and momentum. I do recall some real friendship, limited of course by the nature of the internet and all that, and hope we could continue that. But anyhow, keep up the good work. You're right, I don't have much time for Wikipedia anymore and I'm not involved with DYK. I'm lucky to have enough time to process and upload the images that I take.
Your work on the structure was very valuable and critically important! On the other side of the coin, it's painful when existing images get ignored by people who know the system well (this is not the first time that I had this conversation with someone). A lot of time is spent on images considering travel, editing, uploading on a slow connection, and classifying just to see them not get used and a bunch of unnecessary photo requests for images that exist. 2013 Sprint Cup page lock request

I don't actually get out of Milwaukee and Ozaukee much. Fortunately, there are a lot of places of interest in Milwaukee. Funny, I was just in Ashland in August. I was there after sunset, though, so no pics. Every time I go on a trip, when I'm in a new town I think, "oh, I should have checked if WP needs any pictures!" I did take a few pictures in Minocqua, though, and that article has none. I should fix some up and get them uploaded.
Note that there is also a National Register of Historic Places listings in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Unfortunately, that's one is under 90% complete if you count the delisted sites. I'll let you know if I improve it. We split the city out of the county, since the list was getting long. Sounds like a good plan to just shoot, but I usually concentrate on more artistic shots, than illustrative. In August, my wife and I drove from Grafton to Thunder Bay, and back by a different route. Nice picture of the New Fane church. I notice that the horizon is slightly out of level. Obviously, you can't see the horizon, but the way you check is to look at the vertical lines. Find a vertical line in the center of the photo. It has to be in the middle, because vertical line converge due to perspective. If there aren't any in the middle, you have to kinda guess. In this case, there isn't much perspective distortion. You can see that the windows and the sides of the steeple are all going pretty much the same direction. I'd say this needs about one degree counterclockwise adjustment. Other than that, I don't see anything wrong with it. I just looked at the GI criteria, and I'd say it meets everything else. If you don't have the editing capability to do this, I'd be happy to do it for you.
No need to be defensive about illustrative versus artistic shots - that's what WP needs. Your photo, for example, shows both the church and its immediate environment very well. If I'd shot it, I would have used a different perspective to emphasize the fall colors, or maybe shot it from the cemetery side, or adjusted the colors to bring out the ivy on the walls. Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area

Hi-first many thanks for the photos of the various communities along Lake Winnebago-the signs. They are very interesting photos Also do you have any photos of the Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area in Columbia County. A new article about it just came up. I loved touring that little schoolhouse in June 2011! My indoor photos have family on them. It's now a "museum" that has school desks and chalkboards - not offices or artwork. There is a old one room log cabin on the site. The people from the Anderson Dock Historic District operate it. The next building to the south is the Free Evangelical Lutheran Church-Bethania Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation and the Ephraim Moravian Church is three buildings south of it.
