Babiker Awadalla[edit]

Hi,

I see you are a great expert of Sudan. Have you ever met former Prime Minister Babiker Awadalla? He appears to be still alive at 101, but some sources report he lives in Dublin with his son, some other he lives in Alexandria with his whole family. Reports on him seem to be contradictory and in September 2016 an obituary for him was published, probably prematurely. Do you know something more? Hello, I saw that you are very active concerning the topic Greeks in Sudan and that you apparently reside in Khartoum, seing that you uploaded a photo from the SNM. I am working on a topic that will probably also interest you: the kingdom of Alodia, which had been Christianized in the 6th century and showed strong Byzantine influences. There are a few archaeological pieces in the SNM which I would gladly use for the article, but I would need someone to make photos of them. They are probably not exhibited, so one would have to ask if one can access them. If you are interested let me know and I will send you more details. I am afraid I don't know about the current situation of the Birri language and otherwise only the bits and pieces of humanitarian news which I try to update in the article from time to time.. Two places in Southern Lebanon[edit]

31. Ruines de Hazour ou Hazireh.
36. Ruines pres de Tyr, (au S. de la ville.)

Hi Roman, at User_talk:Onceinawhile#Pictures... we are trying to locate some 19th century paintings of Southern Lebanon. Two that I am stuck on are here:

  • 31. Ruines de Hazour ou Hazireh. This is about 2km north of Ayta ash Shab
  • 36. Ruines pres de Tyr, (au S. de la ville.): described in French as "Non loin de cet endroit, un peu plus vers le sud-est, ou voit une ruine curieuse dont nous joiguons ici le dessin (PI. XXXV). Ses murailles énormes semblent indiquer une place de défense ou un château fort, et l’un de ses arceaux, presque écroulé, semble révéler une origine qui remonterait aux croisades. Tout près de là se trouve un charmant jardin ombragé de tamaris, de figuiers et de mûriers, lieu délicieux de repos pour les voyageurs qui voudraient y dresser leur tente."

Unfortunately, all travel plans to Tyre are cancelled basically until a vaccination has arrived.. plus: my old phone with the number of Dr. Badawi crashed, but this is all the more reason now to get his number from friends and ask him about those places. Otherwise, I reckon a good chance would be to contact Patricia Antaki Masson who produced a chapter with a map about medieval ruins of Tyre in "Sources de l'Histoire de Tyr II" by Gatier et al. Hi Roman, thank you for your message. Dr. Badawi sounds like a fantastic source – there may be noone else in the world who knows the area better.
On the ruin south east of Tyre, I assume it must have been one of the defensive towers like your photo here before it was reconstructed at some point.
On Hazour, I found a description here[1] "Hazzur (N d). — This is a rock-cut tomb with a masonry arch over the entrance; it is at the ruins of Kh. Hazireh. The masonry appears to be Roman from the cutting of the stones; at present the vault has fallen in and quite blocked up the entrance to the tomb ; the dimensions are given by Dr. Robinson ('Later Biblical Researches,' p. 63) before this accident. The arch is round; the stones rather large, but not bevelled, and the whole bears the marks of extreme antiquity. Beneath the vault the tlat rock is cut away to form a sloping passage leading down to the sepulchre. This passage is four feet wide, twelve feet long, and at the lower end five and a half feet deep. Here is a low portal leading into an excavated chamber with a sarcophagus. The vault above is six feet broad by twelve long, and nine and one-third high. There is another sepulchre south-west of this similar to it, but having no vault over it. The following is Robinson's description of this place: 'The arch is round; the stones rather large, but not bevelled; the whole bears the marks of extreme antiquity. Beneath the vault the flat rock is cut away to form a sloping passage leading down to the sepulchre. This passage is 4 feet wide, 12 feet long, and at the lower end 5 1/2 feet deep. It seems the site has been a contender for the name of Tel Hazor.

38.Ruines d'un temple a Belat (entre Tyr et Tibnin)

We found another fascinating lost monument in Southern Lebanon, called by Ernest Renan "the most striking ruin in the whole country". It is at 33°06′53″N 35°17′26″E / 33.114823°N 35.290613°E / 33.114823; 35.290613, equidistant between Marwahin and Ramyah. Lots of detail on it at the PEF Survey here. I just remembered the third topic. See User_talk:Onceinawhile#Mission_de_Phénicie. Two years ago you took this photo. Well it turns out that Renan found a world-class mosaic nearby, which is now in the Louvre – the main attraction of Room 186. The question for Dr Badawi is exactly where was this mosaic found – presumably there are still visible ruins of the “Church of St Christopher”. Hi, I absolutely am. I'm trying to add info from Robinson' 1839 travels in the region; he (mostly) added what religions they followed in the various villages. Also info from Guerin's travels and the 1596 tax-records: long-term goal is to add all that to the various places. (Yeah: I don't expect to finish this year. Or next year. Or the next...)
As for the Kharayeb-places; they seem already to be merged.
One thing you could ask any with a history-interest: what church did Guerin mean when he wrote about "scismatic greek", or "orthodox greek" etc? I really don't know which present-day church to link that to?

I was working on the article and cleaning up some images and, in an edit summary, I called some of the images you added "useless" [2]: the world I actually wanted to use was actually "unnecessary"! Thank you, JBchrch, I appreciate this gesture as well as your working on the article! I am aware that I tend to - what many WP-styleguide-guardians would call - over-illustrate articles, though I would reason that I keep in line with WP guidelines, i.e. not to distract from reading but rather use images to make people curious to read the text. And I have had some pretty unfriendly comments from style-"police" especially in the German-language WP, which I found really disheartening. So again, I do appreciate your gesture very much. Still, I would argue that some of the pictures you deleted were not "unnecessary" either. Obviously, the black cat was meant to be humourous, but the "Welcome to Choulex" photo I feel does illustrate that its medieveal history still plays a prominent role in the identity of that place nowadays, which is a piece of info with some value I reckon. In particular though, I find the drawings which you deleted valuable since it is rare enough to have pictorial sources from the 19th century and they do document somewhat the degree the ruins had crumbled at that time. However, while I myself shy away from such deletions I would not get into an "edit-war" with you about them as I respect your other editing. Thank you very much for your understanding Roman! I am much less confrontational than my edit summaries suggest, so I have no issue with reintroducing the images. I do perfectly see your point and looking at the article 24h later, I may have removed too much indeed. To be entirely transparent, my ambitions for this article is to clean it up real well and submit it for a WP:GA review, which I think it could pass after a little bit of housekeeping (which I enjoy doing). It is only for this reasons that I removed the cat picture, which really did not bother me, but may bother the folks at the GA reviews. Let me know if you think any differently. Cheers. Another mystery for Dr. Badawi. These incredible statues were apparently found in Sidon 120 years ago, but the location was never found again and today noone knows where it was. The 2013 article includes some good research. Pinging @Elias Ziade: who may also be interested.

it would have probably been wiser for me to first fully prepare the article in the sandbox before submitting it, though I may add to my excuse that I have never experienced such a swift relegation to draft status. I have now expanded it accordingly with 35 more references to US, UK, German, French, Swiss and Middle Eastern reliable, independent media from NYT to The Guardian to Le Monde, Der Spiegel and Neue Zürcher Zeitung etc. I trust that Monika Borgmann's notability will become very clear from it very quickly.
Now, I was rather shocked to get the automatic reply upon submitting the draft that the review may take four months or even longer! As you could see from the templates I put on the talk page:

firstly, let me assure you that I much respect and appreciate your efforts on quality control.
Let me also assure you that I have no external relation with Garbely - personal, religious, political, academic, legal, or financial (including holding a cryptocurrency) - whatsoever. None. I first came across his name as a reader of one of his books some 20 years ago, then a few years ago again while watching an ARTE documentary film by him, then likewise this year, which left me baffled that there was no Wikipedia article about him at all, considering his obvious prominence in Swiss journalism and beyond. So I wrote to him through my @wikipedian.ch mail about my intention to create a Wikipedia article about him, adding that it is always an important part of my motivation for writing to have images for illustrating such an article and asking whether we could meet for a photo session. Hence, the picture I uploaded is from the first and only meeting we had, from a two-minutes photo session after two hours of talking historical scandals. Thus, it is simply impossible to claim that he is a friend, though we were on friendly terms. I did not get paid by him or anybody else and I will not be, either, in whichever form. In case you still have suspicions about my motives, I may forward to you my introductory mail to him.
Having said that I would appreciate if you were willing to elaborate a little on why you suspected that I may be hiding a COI. I re-read that determining whether someone has a COI is not a judgement about that person's integrity, but I must admit that your request for clarification does feel rather unpleasantly as though you put my integrity into question and so I am eager to understand what prompted your check on me. Thanks for the detailed response. The source of concern was just your claiming ownership of the photo, as that is usually a sign that the editor and subject have some form of relationship. Dear Onel5969, let me first assure you that I truly appreciate your commitment to quality control, many thanks indeed. However, with all due respect, it appears that your notice to me is a non-specific copy-paste template. Obviously, verifiability cannot be a real issue given the quantity and quality of references, neither notability for the very same reason. Regarding your suspicion of a paid edit forgive me that as an experienced editor I really take that as an insult. You could have at least elaborated on that point. Some weeks ago another editor explained to me that from his experience it was the fact that I was both the editor of an article and the author of the featured photos hinted towards a paid edit. My response then was as it is now: for me personally it is very demotivating to write an article which I cannot illustrate with images, which is why I then often take them myself. To make it very clear: I have had no material benefit from this edit whatsoever and am not going to have it. I simply went to the vernissage of Hellmann, whom I saw for the last time some seven years ago, and was so impressed by his works that I am on the best way to become vegan myself. And I was surprised that there was no WP article on him yet given his prominence - especially in Switzerland, but also beyond - and hence changed that. So, I must admit that I am a fan but evidently not in any relationship which would constitute any COI. If you still insist on keeping the article in draft, please do provide specific reasons.
