Relisting long CFD[edit]
About relisting Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2023_July_28#Category:Association_football_people_by_prefecture_in_Japan with another collapsed section: if you want to do it that way, it's best to put it at the bottom of a CFD log page (like it currently is), otherwise the collapsing may make it hard to view other sections on some browsers.
Another way to do it is to list a few sample lines and put the full list on the talk page.
Feel free to cut our conversation about relisting from the CFD and paste it here instead. – Fayenatic London 15:19, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Fayenatic london, yes, I think the latter would be best. — Qwerfjkltalk 15:23, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
Tech News: 2023-35[edit]
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
As part of the changes for the better diff handling of paragraph splits, improved detection of splits is being rolled out. Over the last two weeks, we deployed this support to group0 and group1 wikis. This week it will be deployed to group2 wikis. [1]
All Special:Contributions pages now show the user's local edit count and the account's creation date. [2]
- Wikisource users can now use the
prpbengalicurrency
label to denote Bengali currency characters as page numbers inside the<pagelist>
tag. [3] - Two preferences have been relocated. The preference "Enable the visual editor" is now shown on the "Editing" tab at all wikis. Previously it was shown on the "Beta features" tab at some wikis. The preference "Use the wikitext mode inside the visual editor, instead of a different wikitext editor" is now also shown on the "Editing" tab at all wikis, instead of the "Beta features" tab. [4][5]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 August. It will be on all wikis from 31 August (calendar).
New signups for a Wikimedia developer account will start being pushed towards idm.wikimedia.org, rather than going via Wikitech. Further information about the new system is available.
- All right-to-left language wikis, plus Korean, Armenian, Ukrainian, Russian, and Bulgarian Wikipedias, will have a link in the sidebar that provides a short URL of that page, using the Wikimedia URL Shortener. This feature will come to more wikis in future weeks. [6]
Future changes
- The removal of the DoubleWiki extension is being discussed. This extension currently allows Wikisource users to view articles from multiple language versions side by side when the
<=>
symbol next to a specific language edition is selected. Comments on this are welcomed at the phabricator task. - A proposal has been made to merge the second hidden-categories list (which appears below the wikitext editing form) with the main list of categories (which is further down the page). More information is available on Phabricator; feedback is welcome!

Comment/question: I'm not sure why this problem was reported as it arose from the same error (a missing title parameter) as in the previous report and, also, the citation was not a bare url. Possible reporting bug? I've fixed the problem by adding the source title. Thanks.
PearlyGigs (talk) 19:22, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- @PearlyGigs, the edit introduced two errors, a bare URL error and a missing title error. These errors frequently occur in the same edit, so normally they would be handled together and the bot would have notified you of one error. For some reason there seems to have been a delay, as it have a notification almost immediately after about the same edit. This is probably due to some kind of lag somewhere, but it seems a rare occurrence so I don't think there's much I can do about it. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:43, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023[edit]
News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).
- Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
- A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that
[s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment
.
- Special:Contributions now shows the user's local edit count and the account's creation date. (T324166)
- The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming
local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus
. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged tonote when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful
.
- Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

- @JarrahTree, yes, I was editing 200,000 pages, I expected there to be some false positives. As I founf the rate was too high, I stopped tagging wikiprojects. Would you like me to go through and undo the bot's edits on pages in that category? — Qwerfjkltalk 15:25, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
- nah dont bother - the discovery process is a useful practice - no big deal, thanks for explaining what happened, understanding what went wrong is as interesting as fixing the problems... JarrahTree 00:49, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

would do nicely. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:13, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Question from Greenvillette (07:59, 8 September 2023)[edit]
I am new in Wikipedia, My edits were reverted, I have done minor edits like one line or two lines , those information was not wrong , But I don't know why they were reverted, my only intention was to contribute by writing. Because Wikipedia has been helping not only me rather all ,from a long time by its vast informations. Thanks for reading. --Greenvillette (talk) 07:59, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Greenvillette, your edits were of poor quality, for example this one on Itihas (2002 film) had mutilple spelling and punctuation errors and contained irrelevant information. Here Materialscientist said in their edit summary that they reverted you for not citing sources, and reverted you again when you redid the edit. You can always ask the person who reverted you to explain why, but they will be unwilling to help you if you edit disruptively like this, and continue re-editing once reverted. — Qwerfjkltalk 15:03, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted[edit]

Hi Qwerfjkl. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:
- Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
- If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
- Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
- Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
- Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 13:17, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
getting diffs[edit]
Hello. I am non-seriously working on WP:BOTREQ#Creating archive page for added ITN items. I successfully got editor name, time, and edit summary, but I have been failing to get diffs of any page/edit. I tried to find the information regarding edit diffs in manual, and in this man page, but I am still failing. Do you know some other manpage, or how to get a diff? —usernamekiran (talk) 10:24, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Usernamekiran, I assume you're using pywikibot. Do you want something like
page.revisions()
? — Qwerfjkltalk 10:30, 10 September 2023 (UTC)- thanks. Yes, I'm using pywikibot. I had tried using page.revisions() but couldn't get it correctly. My code so far for getting the info is as following. I have also created another chunk for creating archive pages, it is working correctly. The only thing I'm stuck with is the diff text. —usernamekiran (talk) 10:51, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
import pywikibot site = pywikibot.Site("en", "wikipedia") source_page_title = "Template:In the news" source_page = pywikibot.Page(site, source_page_title) # Most recent edit to the source page latest_revision = source_page.latest_revision # Extract information from the latest revision editor_name = latest_revision.user edit_time = latest_revision.timestamp edit_summary = latest_revision.comment # Create the archive entry with username, timestamp, and edit s archive_entry = f"Editor: {editor_name}, Timestamp: {edit_time}, Summary: {edit_summary}" # Print print(archive_entry)
- I think it just clicked me. But I'm on mobile. I will let you know how it goes in a couple of hours. —usernamekiran (talk) 10:56, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Usernamekiran, so do you want something like
site.compare(old, diff, difftype='table')
? — Qwerfjkltalk 11:24, 10 September 2023 (UTC)- I tried multiple methods, I am getting bizarre outputs. I am also getting texts from irrelevant articles. I tested the script on the template:in the news, as well as on my userpage - same issues. I have been unable to get/load the diffs. can you get the diffs? —usernamekiran (talk) 13:18, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
- When I tried to investigate the issue further, I got following error:
pywikibot.exceptions.InconsistentTitleError: Query on [[en:User:Usernamekiran]] returned data on 'Yuri Petukhov (footballer)' CRITICAL: Exiting due to uncaught exception InconsistentTitleError: Query on [[en:User:Usernamekiran]] returned data on 'Yuri Petukhov (footballer)'
In the html output (of previous script), there was mention of "Yuri Aleksandrovich Petukhov" which is a redirect to "Yuri Petukhov (footballer)". These two articles are not mentioned, and were never mentioned in any previous version of my userpage. However KiranBOT had updated the category of "Yuri Aleksandrovich Petukhov", after that, the "Yuri Aleksandrovich Petukhov" page was moved to "Yuri Petukhov (footballer)" by some other editor. I still have no idea why texts of these articles were popping up in the output. —usernamekiran (talk) 13:30, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

Tech News: 2023-37[edit]
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- ORES, the revision evaluation service, is now using a new open-source infrastructure on all wikis except for English Wikipedia and Wikidata. These two will follow this week. If you notice any unusual results from the Recent Changes filters that are related to ORES (for example, "Contribution quality predictions" and "User intent predictions"), please report them. [14]
- When you are logged in on one Wikimedia wiki and visit a different Wikimedia wiki, the system tries to log you in there automatically. This has been unreliable for a long time. You can now visit the login page to make the system try extra hard. If you feel that made logging in better or worse than it used to be, your feedback is appreciated. [15]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 September. It will be on all wikis from 14 September (calendar).
The Technical Decision-Making Forum Retrospective team invites anyone involved in the technical field of Wikimedia projects to signup to and join one of their listening sessions on 13 September. Another date will be scheduled later. The goal is to improve the technical decision-making processes.
As part of the changes for the Better diff handling of paragraph splits wishlist proposal, the inline switch widget in diff pages is being rolled out this week to all wikis. The inline switch will allow viewers to toggle between a unified inline or two-column diff wikitext format. [16]
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 20 September. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [17]
- The Enterprise API is launching a new feature called "breaking news". Currently in BETA, this attempts to identify likely "newsworthy" topics as they are currently being written about in any Wikipedia. Your help is requested to improve the accuracy of its detection model, especially on smaller language editions, by recommending templates or identifiable editing patterns. See more information at the documentation page on MediaWiki or the FAQ on Meta.

Hello[edit]
I got a msg from Wiki that you are my mentor. Pls guide me on how to avoid being blocked, I'm unable to understand why I'm being blocked in the first place. Is there a better way to communicate than here? Jinrakshak (talk) 19:22, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Jinrakshak
- @Jinrakshak, you have never been blocked - see your block log. I assume you're referring to User talk:Jinrakshak#Wikipedia and copyright. Please don't just copy text from other websites. — Qwerfjkltalk 15:45, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
- My IP address is blocked. I don't understand why should we not copy text from other websites and give references? Thought that was more authentic? If you could undo your actions, then I can edit. Its been so long ago and I don't even know what this was about Jinrakshak (talk) 19:30, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Jinrakshak, because it violates copyright. It is okay to use a website as a source, but you can not simply copy text from another website.
I hvae nothing to do with your IP address being blocked, but I don't see the problem if you can edit from this account. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:06, 19 September 2023 (UTC)- But that website doesn't have copyright Jinrakshak (talk) 22:52, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from Devendra Dahal (16:07, 19 September 2023)[edit]
Hello sir I have publish a page but wikipedia doesnt accept it --Devendra Dahal (talk) 16:07, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Devendra Dahal, please read WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY. You cannot write an article about yourself. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:29, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
Global ratings[edit]
Hi Qwerfjkl, are you up for some more bot work sometime? It seems to me that we could roll out the WP:PIQA assessments soon. For articles which are not in Category:Articles with conflicting quality ratings and have equal or blank class parameters defined in individual banners, we can do edits like this. Bear in mind that a few projects have chosen to opt-out of the global ratings so it will be necessary to track these templates and their redirects, and not to remove the class parameter from those. Thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:21, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
- @MSGJ, sure, I'm happy to do that. I'll start writing the code for that after I run T22 and T23. — Qwerfjkltalk 15:13, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
Bot breaking redirects in some cases[edit]
Hi - I've noticed that Qwerfjkl (bot) has broken a couple redirects while fixing the links to episode list anchors - diffs can be found here and here. Tollens (talk) 02:31, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
- Here's another one - not sure if this is a huge deal as a one-time run but just want to make sure you're aware of the errors. Tollens (talk) 05:22, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
New pages patrol newsletter[edit]
Hello Qwerfjkl,

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!
October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.
PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.
Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.
Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
