Noting your tag for more references. I have this on my watchlist. Not saying the article can not be improved, but was there some specific part of the article caught your eye? (A general template is possibly not ideal for an article which already has footnotes and in-line notes?) I own a few of the books needed, so possibly can have a look tomorrow.--Andrew Lancaster (talk) 22:12, 21 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Andrew Lancaster:, thank you for responding, and so quickly! I often try to go back to the talk page of an article I tag and explain the reasoning, but had a few hardware issues in the meantime. Specifically, seeing as how Books 1-7 had no citations, I thought the references were a bit lacking; the rest of the citations are confined to the last book, a comparison to more later works (especially Il Principe), and comparative commentary. The latter two are obviously more easily cited, despite the popularity of the foundational work itself. But what initially caught my eye was the unqualified statement, while undoubtedly true:
"That Babylon was conquered on the night of a festival by diverting the Euphrates River from its channel is also stated by Herodotus (1.191). (This is significantly different to the events as they are currently understood.)"
While that's accurate, I think such a statement needs a secondary source, and likely more than one (unless the citation comprehensively addresses exactly that point). I think Gibbon touches on it when discussing Julius Caesar, but since almost the entirety of my personal library is packed away, it wasn't a quick-ish fix for me.
It's not urgent business, especially as many classical articles (especially those on extant literature from antiquity) are lacking citations, and the article might still technically qualify as a stub. But I thought it might benefit from the maintenance tag all the same, as it probably gets a bit more traffic than some others. I know some people find them an eyesore, though.

And thank you, again, for being so generous in offering to do legwork. I find the task of filling in references to existing prose, especially when confined to online research, rather tedious myself (albeit necessary). Quinto Simmaco (talk) 17:58, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Keep in mind I am not promising :). Concerning just sourcing the narrative summary I guess that is a job for when someone has time to go through it, but not of the highest priority. That comment about Babylon is well spotted because implies secondary literature. I am aware of the fact that Herodotus tells the story differently, but not of modern secondary commentary. I suppose there must be some! --Andrew Lancaster (talk) 08:35, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Would appreciate your comment on the lead of West Montrose, Ontario[edit]

Good morning, Quinto. We could really use an Editor who can quickly review the TALK section, determine what the consensus is about the lead, and confirm that to the group debating a few issues.

There was a photo, of an Old Order Mennonite buggy - taken nearby by not right in West Montrose - but after a lot of argument, pro and con, I gave in and deleted that. So ignore any Talk items about that. The only current dispute is about the lead which is really quite brief; you will find a few Talk threads about it.

Here is a summary of the situation as I see it:

This article had not a single citation until March 22, 2017 when I first read it. I added new content and many citations. Now, the argument is about the lead. An editor (who worked on the article extensively prior to March 22) complained about the reliability of the sources; we seemed to get consensus in Talk that they are reliable.

He then objected to the content of the lead - although it was much the same as it was prior to my involvement.

He then said the sources do not support the content of the text. We were waiting for other involved editors to provide their comments about his new objections. He chose not to wait and deleted much of the lead and citations. I reverted that.

Perhaps I am biased but that's the way I see developments. Fresh eyes may help move toward a consensus, one way or the other. Cheers, Peter K Burian (talk) 16:30, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

2019 US Banknote Contest[edit]

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

Draft: Kabir Helminski[edit]

Hi Quinto Simmaco. I wonder if you could help me by reviewing the above draft. It has been declined under WP:NPOV, but when I asked the administrator who declined it if they could point to a particular sentence or passage that violated the principle of neutrality, they admitted they couldn't point to a single one. They did however say that what concerns them is that I might be leaving out pertinent information because of my declared link to the subject of the piece. The only advice they could offer was to suggest I seek guidance from somebody on WikiProject Religion (you can read our conversation here). Reading your profile, you seemed like a suitable person to ask. It would be greatly appreciated if you could give me your thoughts about what can be done to this piece to make it acceptable. Editor of the Week : nominations needed![edit]

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up a citation.

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:50, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You've been unsubscribed from the Feedback Request Service[edit]

Hi Quinto Simmaco! You're receiving this notification because you were previously subscribed to the Feedback Request Service, but you haven't made any edits to the English Wikipedia in over three years.

In order to declutter the Feedback Request Service list, and to produce a greater chance of active users being randomly selected to receive invitations to contribute, you've been unsubscribed, along with all other users who have made no edits in three years or more.

You do not need to do anything about this - if you are happy to not receive Feedback Request Service messages, thank you very much for your contributions in the past, and this will be the last you hear from the service. If, however, you would like to resubscribe yourself, you can follow the below instructions to do so:

  1. Go to the Feedback Request Service page.
  2. Decide which categories are of interest to you, under the RfC and/or GA headings.
  3. Paste {{Frs user|Quinto Simmaco|limit}} underneath the relevant heading(s), where limit is the maximum number of requests you wish to receive for that category per month.
  4. Publish the page.

If you've just come back after a wikibreak and are seeing this message, welcome back! You can follow the above instructions to re-activate your subscription. Likewise, if this is an alternate account, please consider subscribing your main account in much the same way.

Note that if you had a rename and left your old name subscribed to the FRS, you may be receiving this message on your new username's talk page still. If so, make sure your new account name is subscribed to the FRS, using the same procedure mentioned above.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask on the Feedback Request Service talk page, or on the Feedback Request Service bot's operator's talk page. Thank you!
