Help with Russian to English translation: 2014–15 Russian military intervention in Ukraine ?

I see that you contribute to Wikipedia in both Russian and English, including a number of edits related to the recent Russian military intervention in Ukraine. According to your own information, you do so with a professional knowledge of those two languages.

Among the External links on the page 2014–15 Russian military intervention in Ukraine there are two links to openrussia.org, for which an editor has inserted an English translation of the original Russian title. Those two translations from Russian to English are clearly not very accurate. If you could improve these translations, then that would improve the article. Best regards. Splitting Mariupol standoff

I made my arguments at the talk page and am in support of the split. Like I said at the talk page, the title is missleading because the standoff is not at Mariupol but at Shyrokyne. Do you want to split it or should I? EkoGraf (talk) 13:58, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Like I said: hitting tensely populated civilian areas with multiple rocket launchers deserves a separate article (even a bus had an article);
as for Shyrokyne — it is (anyway, what's left of) located about 10 km from Mariupol, forms a defence line of Mariupol and can thus be (to a cerain extent, of course) considered as (vital) part of the city. —Pietadè (talk) 17:15, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi, @DagosNavy: As for splitting: against, and quite strongly:

— months ago there was a similar question in etwi (do notice, before acting it is/would be kind to discuss the question), and, the articles remained as they are;
— he/she has not started the separate articles as an article should begin (e.g., first instance of unfamiliar "things" to be linked);

— etwi and enwi articles, except for the 1st 3 months of 2016, are pretty synchronic; after splitting in enwi, the same has to be done in etwi too;

— these 3-month periods may contain errors (like Stari → Staryi), that would be easier to address before splitting,
— and much more, reasons
— it is much easier (and less time-consuming) to use the format (3-m period); have you looked, e.g., on the newly created article on Feb 2016, seems kind of abracadabra to me, no introduction, etc.
— Besides that, e.g., vedi Timeline of the war in Donbass (April–June 2014)#ATO, and, click on "What links here"...; 15 April is written there as: {{anchor|ATO}}15 April, meaning, this part of this article can be linked to...Pietadè (talk) 13:42, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

Therefore my next move is to revert the split, providing a link to this thread in the edit summary. In other issues, my ignorance of Slavic languages led me to transliterate Старый into "Stari" after my memories of the Bosnian War (remember the destruction of the Stari Most in Mostar). Assassination in Mariupol

Hi Pietade. Just after this edit I came across your hidden message regarding Col. Kharaberiush assassination in Mariupol. He was actually killed on 31 March, see here and here. I became aware of the incident as soon as the news was released, so I was about to add it to the January-March timeline since yesterday. I think Onetwothreeip proposal about one-month timelines, even with the problems you have described on his talk page could be the best way to avoid further questionings like the ones we have suffered in the past (alleged WP:NEWS, unreliable sources and fundamentally pages' size). Currently there are 20 quarters, that is 58 months;
and not only the connection between months, but, You see, in a 4-quarter version one has to link e.g., LPR 4 times, at least, in a 12-month version this makes at least 12×LPRs, and all the other linkable articles.
Besides that, at least some of these 4-quarter versions are linked to other Wikipedias 4-quarter “sisters” (see the table in the Estonian version of the War in Donbass on Estonian page, clicking on entries opens an Estonian version, where You can see language links):

What are you talking about? I've never heard of "DPR, Pisky, mortars, BMPs". When I split the articles, the references were all transferred into the new articles, as well as the external links, categories and templates. In a 3-month article you can link DPR, Pisky, or what ever only in the beginning or in the beginning and in the end (articles in Wikis have inside links, and if you make 3 from 1 you have to link the articles that were otherwise linked in a 3-month version once); or, there is an anchored link to ATO ("anti-terror operation"), that is pretty often linked from other articles... Later on, when pro-Russian media started counting and publishing every shell, the ref links in 3-months articles were customised, to match the ref limit per article; these should be made back too, links to 3-months' timelines in other language Wikis, checking typos (e.g., Ukrainian и written incorrectly)... as for me, I do not possess that much free time;

I have not deleted anything, and I have certainly not deleted the histories. The edit summaries for the new articles make it very clear that they are split from a previous article, and you obviously are aware of that. It's not even possible for me to delete histories, that's something only an administrator can do. This is getting absurd, the consensus is for splitting these articles into months. Your reasons against them are completely incoherent, you're acting as if the new articles are much more flawed than the articles they were split from. Hi Onetwothreeip. Let me make clear that I would prefer to keep the original three-month format. Pietadè has made a great job here, correcting my transliteration mistakes from cirillic, posting the Ukrainian military reports or given us the right Ukrainian toponyms, so I will always support him. Pressure from some users, however, forced us to include the pro-Russian version of the conflict on the basis of WP:NPOV and counter-balance. This led to oversized pages, and detractors of the timeline charged once again with templates and requests for deletion. As I had already told Pietadè, my only reason not for supporting your position, but for refraining myself from reverting the one-month timelines is to avoid a new "offensive" by these "concerned users", whose only goal seems to be the outright deletion of this chronology.--Darius (talk) 23:40, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Arcturus, I do usually copy the data from below the heading "Deaths within 28 days of positive test" (currently "Total // 49,770"), copy-paste (not to err), below "Deaths within 28 days of positive test by date of death" there is a table, with columns Daily/Cumulative/Data/About, and, cf. data in column "United Kingdom total" with wiki table (they may update data “posthumously”, don't know...); their table starts on 02-01-2020 total 1 death / 03-03-2020 = total 3 deaths / 05-03-2020 = total 6 deaths, etc.). — Pietadè (talk) 19:15, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

I see what you mean about the UK figures. However, I assume some of those daily figures, going back several days or even weeks, will be updated each day as the new "deaths reported" figures are published. We would then need to retrospectively update the figures in the template on a daily basis. This would be more accurate, but it's a bit of a maintenance overhead. I also saw that the toll had changed, but knowing I did not have time presently to locate and add a citation and update all parts of the article that needed to be updated as a result, I did not edit. Hi Pietadè! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism.
