New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022[edit]

Hello Mccapra,

New page reviewer of the year cup.svg

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Everlasting Fireworks looped.gif

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Qdot[edit]

I created the article Qdot (https://wiki.alquds.edu/?query=Draft:Qdot) with references in line with Wikipedia guidelines but maybe it wasn't enough because the article was drafted but the article was recreated with only blog References (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qdot) and it is still on the Wikipedia space. I am confused.

New system of music theory[edit]

Hey, I just saw your work on https://wiki.alquds.edu/?query=New_System_of_Musical_Theory. Thank you so much, I wasn't expecting someone else to actually work on it ! Vincent-vst🚀 (talk) 11:52, 16 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Vincent-vst: my pleasure I am a great devotee of Rameau. There’s a lot that can be added to the article but I did enough on it to get it back into mainspace. All the best Mccapra (talk) 17:13, 16 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, I just saw this article due to a revert of an edit by my bot over at Tolga Akcay (Q110168956). It seems to be the same as Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tolga Akcay - but it has some extra references/info in the article. Probably it can just be speedy deleted, but I saw your comment about sockpuppets, so User:Voltain might need checking more generally? Thanks. @Mannuseemu: hi thanks for your message. The sources haven’t been updated since I left my comment. Also being true is not enough for a Wikipedia article. Article subjects must be notable, and Paota Bus Stand needs to meet the standards set out in WP:NCORP. Mccapra (talk) 18:25, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023[edit]

Hello Mccapra,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards
New page reviewer of the year cup.svg

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Hi, you tagged the above page for notability, third-party and primary sources, which wasn't a huge surprise to me given I'd noted it needed more refs in the original edit summary. I've now added several references which I'm reasonably confident should address your concerns (several of the unlinked sources are findable via Google Books but I wasn't sure of the best way to include those links in the citations). Perhaps you could take a look and see whether you'd be happy to remove the tag now please? YFB ¿ 14:13, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Yummifruitbat: thanks I’ve done that. Do you know how to use the book citation tool? If not I’ll show you. Mccapra (talk) 15:15, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mitzi Montoya page[edit]

Speedy deletion ?[edit]

With reference your speedy deletion of Third Reich NSDAP cabinet 1925. This page should not be speedy deleted as pure vandalism or a blatant hoax, because... (your reason here) --Stephen2nd (talk) 18:33, 18 January 2023 (UTC) These 22 members of the 1925 cabinet meeting of NSDAP, have been listed on the German Wikipedia for several years, the 22 member numbers are each individually referenced from 22 published authors. All I have done is transferred these numbers to the English Wikipedia, and added images to them. The details of the 22 individuals, are taken directly from their existing articles on their names. As an editor for several years, I believe that cross referencing existing allowed Wikipedia articles should not be disallowed. If you wish to change the title or any of the text you are welcome. Please keep the article until this matter has been debated. Stephen2nd (talk) 18:33, 18 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Why have I not been allowed to contest the deletion? Stephen2nd (talk) 18:44, 18 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, thanks for your note. I'd like to assure you that I take source attribution seriously. I did not translate the article from Polish Wikipedia, as I wrote it from the bottom up based on refs, since the Polish version has barely any sources. I did not borrow anything from the Polish Wiki and the articles have different focus. Sometimes I do translate articles, but I mark that, as I did with Zenia Larsson - with information in edit summary and with a template added to the talk page. Enjoy your day, GiantBroccoli (talk) 08:59, 21 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Symphony Orchestra[edit]

MccapraThank for your edit on this Article. Your comment was on

This article may rely excessively on sources too closely associated with the subject, potentially preventing the article from being verifiable and neutral. (January 2023)
This article relies largely or entirely on a single source. (January 2023)

Yet the article is an introductory article on a Symphony Orchestra and used its official web site for introduciton and its history. It is easily verifiable and it does need neutrality issues because it is a mere introduction existent on its web page without any controversial issues to be discussed. I think the tags can be removed if you check the sites. It is an active orchestra and no debatable issues are used in the text. Have a nice day. @Mccapra Curiousbumblebee (talk) 13:08, 21 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Curiousbumblebee: hi I’m afraid you can’t base a Wikipedia article on the subject’s own website. You need to add third party sources to demonstrate that the subject is notable. Mccapra (talk) 14:11, 21 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Kaya Kinkel tagged as an orphan[edit]

Hi @Mccapra, I translated a page and you tagged it as an Orphan. What should I do? I linked it to the original page from German Wikipedia.

Isn't it enough?

I also checked Find link tool. And I found the page in both German and English languages!

Ya’ara Keydar review[edit]

Hi @Mccapra! I've tagged you to seek second opinion in a user talk page discussion regarding Ya’ara Keydar review. I don't think is sufficient to pass for WP:NACADEMIC and WP:BIO in general as the subject's significant impact in the field is not clear beyond being a career curator/fashion historian with an established track record of exhibitions (as do plenty others). I'd appreciate your input. Thanks. Ppt91 (talk) 20:27, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Article "José Maria Xavier"[edit]

@Gondolabúrguer: thanks I’ve removed the tags. Also please remember you need to provide proper attribution for material derived from other language wikis. I’ve added the translation template to the article talk page. Mccapra (talk) 21:58, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK. Thank you! Gondolabúrguer (talk) 22:03, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can you delete this file? It was only a draft.[edit]

(Off) Hi again. I am a newbie here. I do not know how to delete this older file. (Read the "discussion": there is a newer that I did, a colored version.) Thanks! https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mapa_das_isoglossas_do_estado_de_Minas_Gerais,_segundo_o_trabalho_%22Esbo%C3%A7o_de_Um_Atlas_Lingu%C3%ADstico_de_Minas_Gerais%22_(UFJF,_1977).png Gondolabúrguer (talk) 22:19, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

hi I’m afraid I don’t know what the processes are on Wikimedia Commons. However just because there’s a newer colour version doesn’t mean the older one needs to be deleted. Both may be useful, and I’d just leave it to someone else to put up for deletion if they feel it’s appropriate. Mccapra (talk) 22:43, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Andrew Geils review[edit]

Hi Mccapra, just thanking you for your speedy review of my newly created article Andrew Geils - much appreciated! (btw the guy sounds like a bit of an A$$hole, but that is neither here nor there for notability I am guessing...) - I was added relevant text in the form of an elongated quote almost simultaneously with your review, not sure if you would have seen it... Anyway best regards from Tony Rees, Australia. Tony 1212 (talk) 17:24, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wikimedia Foundation project to improve PageTriage[edit]

Hi, as an active New Page Patroller, I wanted to make sure you were aware of an upcoming Wikimedia Foundation project to improve the PageTriage extension. We recently published results of user interviews, and have some findings that we would value patrollers' opinions on. If you haven't yet, please consider adding the project page to your watchlist to stay up to date with our progress! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:17, 2 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
