WikiProject Horror Collaboration[edit]

Hello Matti, just want to let you know that I have finished my expansion on the article for the horror film I Drink Your Blood and I have already incorporated what I have done so far on the draft page into the actual article itself. However its still needs a little more work done to it though, namely giving proper citations to unsourced material, updating citations, and expanding the section on the film's controversy. At the moment I am finished with the article, and I am leaving it up to others to further modify and expand it. I am also working on a new article to collaborate on for WikiProject Horror. It is the article on the infamous horror character Leatherface which is pretty significant but, unfortunately, it is in a state of severe underdevelopment and suffering from poor writing and few sources. My plan is to expand it significantly so that it reaches its full potential, and quite possibly become a featured article like the one on Jason Voorhees. However, for this particular project I will need the help of as many editors as possible since the level of expansion needed would be too daunting for any one or even three editors. Similar to the other collaboration that I have done with I Drink Your Blood, I have already created a draft for the use of expanding the article which I will include the link here. Let me know whether or not you would be able to help expand the article on my talk page and see if you can get other people on this.--Paleface Jack (talk) 16:24, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Jack. Heyho!
I'm... at a bit of a loss here man. I've been looking through things, and, well... I don't see why you've came to me about this. To my knowledge, i've never involved myself with horror stuff or indeed with WikiProject Horror. It's not my type of thing, and I haven't edited 'I drink your blood' either. I don't see any connections between the two of us in the past and My contributions as of recently isn't exactly sparkly, so, while i'm not criticising it, i'm certainly not understanding it, and, well, I just want to understand really. What made you decide to ask me?
On a side note though, looking through your contributions for an answer, I came to realise that WP:FILM had my old username in the Active Participants list, so thanks for the indirect reminder. MM (WhatIDo WHATIDO?) (Now THIS... I did.) 23:53, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again Matt, just thought I'd clarify as to why I asked you. I saw that you are good with sources which is why I asked if you were interested in this particular project, we need all the help we can get in finding sources for this article. As to the mention of I Drink Your Blood, I like to let people know what I have worked on so far just in case they are interested. Sorry about that mate, I should have clarified that a bit more.--Paleface Jack (talk) 15:30, 20 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

run[edit]

Hi. You left a message on my talk page about admin. If i try what would happen? --Wyatt2049 | (talk) 13:08, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wyatt2049. While I don't know for sure what others are thinking during one of the administrative runs, which most on Wikipedia call RFA, short for 'Requests For Adminship', the result of those who try to run with less than 10,000 edits is often the same. Wikipedia has a process called a 'SNOW Close', which you can read about at https://wiki.alquds.edu/?query=Wikipedia:Snowball_clause , but in a nutshell, experienced editors and Administrators may close something if the result is obviously a 'not going to happen', and if someone with your amount of time here, and amount of edits, tried to run for an Administrative position, I'm 98% sure you'd wind up as a 'SNOW Close' and no Admin position, or a very similar procedure that basically means the same thing, a 'Too Soon' close, which you can read about at https://wiki.alquds.edu/?query=Wikipedia:Too_soon and which means you're just not ready yet.

Seeing as you originally brought this question to @KrakatoaKatie: , I've asked her to come by the page and explain anything that I've missed. But, from my knowledge of Wikipedia's systems and users, if you tried to run for an Administrator position. It most likely won't last long or bring any good results for you. MM ('"HURRRR?) (Hmmmmm.) 13:28, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What would happen is failure. You've posted the same message to my talk page twice now asking about administrator status though you don't edit regularly and you have less than 200 edits. I'll be blunt: going around to various editors' pages and asking how to be an administrator is a guarantee you won't succeed. It makes people think you're here for status or prestige (though I can guarantee adminship brings neither). We have serious, strong criteria for administrators because this is the fifth-most widely read site in the world, and we have had administrators who have abused the community's trust in the past. Stick around here for three or four years, edit broadly and with enthusiasm for the project, and it could be a possibility. Until that editing happens and you've become a fixture here, don't ask again. Katietalk 13:36, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong place?[edit]

Hi MatticusMadness, First off, thanks so much for the cupcake and for responding to the ANI report! Admittedly, this is the first time I've filed one. Since you seem to be a lot more experienced than I am with ANI stuff, do you think I went to the wrong place with this? Judging by some of the other reports up there right now, it seems quite unusual that my report would have no comments other than yours. The only thing I can think of for why it's not getting responses is that maybe I was too vague (as in I didn't propose a solution). Any advice you could give would be much appreciated. :) Katniss May the odds be ever in your favor 14:24, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @KatnissEverdeen:. Now's the perfect time for a Hunger Games pun and I don't have one. I guess the odds weren't really in my favour for thinking up one huh? *Ba-Dum, tssss*
My experience with the Wiki is... Hit and miss, shall we say. Though with AN/I, I'm not too shoddy.
Allow me to share with you, some words from my Wiki-Mentor, Mr Yunshui, he once told me "think of AN/I as your big shiny red button" (or words to that affect), in effect, it was to suggest that ANI is best used if you cannot think of or locate any other options for where to take it. In your case, IPs causing trouble at several articles for a few years, well, I'm not going to say that you did wrong. I dare say there might be individuals that would suggest WP:RFPP depending on how many pages there were actually being hit. You'll have to forgive me, I looked into it as far as the subpage you made keeping track, did the notice I left on the case, then went to bed. I should also point out; that ANI is being a bit 'swamped' by the whole 'Vipul' matter, (long story short, Vipul pays some editors, some of them cause problems, and those participating can't agree on much) However, from my own scope, I believe it wasn't out of line to put it to that board.
I may have another suggestion coming up, and, the more I think about it, the more I think it could work. Are you familiar with WP:SPI , WP:SOCKPUPPET , WP:MEATPUPPET and WP:DUCK ? If you can prove that there's a connection and the WP:CHECKUSERs are convinced, that could lead to some of them being shorted out.
WP:3RR and WP:AIV may also be some help in cutting those that are quickly persistent.
Hope I've managed to be some help. Somehow. Heh. MM ('"HURRRR?) (Hmmmmm.) 17:13, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(Note for Yunshui: If you're reading this because you were mentioned and are wondering what's going on. https://wiki.alquds.edu/?query=Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#Long-term_disruptive_IP_hopping_on_The_Simpsons-related_articles )

That's actually great advice! My initial reasoning for reporting to ANI was that the issue was so large (in terms of the fact that it was long-term and the sockmaster uses several different IP ranges with slightly differing endings to avoid detection/blocks). I did consider WP:RFPP, though I'm not sure how it would work as the IPs target four articles, and my fear is (as there are 28 seasons & respective pages for The Simpsons) that once those four are blocked the sockmaster will just move on to other seasons and vandalize those instead (and I doubt the admins at WP:RFPP would be pleased with me reporting 28 articles at once!). I have made one report to WP:ANI, but I'm generally unacquainted with the process. I'm sure it's not overly tough to figure out though.
The more I think about it, I think the best option would be to rangeblock the two most frequent IP ranges and get the four articles he's vandalizing semi-protected. I can't think of anything at the moment that would solve the problem I mentioned above with the IPs just moving to other pages after those four are blocked, but I'll keep thinking on that.
If you don't mind me asking for a bit more advice here, based on the solution I presented above, where would be the best place to report this (as the ANI report still hasn't gotten any comments other than yours, though it makes sense with a paid-editing issue that big)?
Oh and your Hunger Games pun there was quite good actually lol. Glad to meet someone who has a soft spot for Katniss too! :) Katniss May the odds be ever in your favor 01:15, 15 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again MatticusMadness, sorry to not give you a chance to reply yet, but I wanted to let you know it appears things have resolved with my ANI report. The articles have been protected and the IP ranges all blocked for a month, so that should likely stop the disruption at least for a bit, I will re-report to WP:ANI and/or WP:RFPP if things continue. Thanks so much for the help, your advice and comments were very helpful and much appreciated! I guess the odds of this ANI report were ever in my favor after all! Katniss May the odds be ever in your favor 02:45, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Phew! Good show! I wasn't sure where else to go with this myself to be perfectly honest @KatnissEverdeen: I saw your reply this morning and have had it on-off in my mind on where else would have worked for it. I couldn't think of where else by the time it got to NinjaRobotPirate getting on top of it. Hopefully such matters won't have to be re'Peeta'd, but it looks like a bit of a Quarter Quell out there... They 'Rue' the day they went off the 'arrow' of good editing, huh? Okay I'll stop. XD MM ('"HURRRR?) (Hmmmmm.) 03:12, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your user page banner[edit]

Please be aware that for users using the Wiki skin "MonoBook", your user talk page banner item "Did you bring cake? Remember to sign your talk message with 4 tildes" blocks access to the "user page - talk - edit this page - new section - history" tabs. (The "talk" tab covers the banner.) Removing padding: 5px; or changing it to padding: 2px; would help, as would changing top: 3px to top: 0px. I encourage you to go to Preferences, click the Appearances tab, choose the MonoBook skin, and experiment with your user talk page markup for the cake message, and choose something that doesn't block the menu tabs on this page. —Anomalocaris (talk) 03:25, 19 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ANI[edit]

There's nothing wrong with closing threads now and again, but you seem to have made it a full-time hobby. I would like to suggest you do something else with a portion of your time on Wikipedia, especially because some of your closes seem questionable (e.g., the one I reverted a couple of days ago, and the one today involving jengod that seems unnecessary at best). --JBL (talk) 20:06, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Full time hobby. Hey, that’s a good way of wording it! Okay, so, say I take the advice, and cap out of closing. Wikignoming is my thing, right? I’d trainwreck much faster trying to improve articles. Any suggestions for somewhere else for a gnome to go?

Also, has anyone else noted any concerns over my closes? Any policy that vibes against my doing so? I’m listening, if anybody else isn’t liking it. Or is this more to stop anybody else kicking up a fuss? I’m bad at reading between the lines. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That… Doesn't sound hostile, right? MM (Give me info.) (Victories) 22:55, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's no policy against non-admin clerking at ANI, but it's generally discouraged. Of course there's no way to know that, since it's not really written down anywhere, and tends to come up "in public" only at RfA.
If you're looking for some deeply unglamorous low-difficulty gnoming, Category:CS1 errors: generic name (25,154) and Category:CS1 maint: numeric names: authors list‎ (58,551) are pretty easy fixes spread across a vast quantity of references.
Also late last month User:GreenC bot nuked a couple hundred references to domain squatter hugedomainsdotcom (now on the spam blacklist) between 20 and 21 June and between Special:Diff/1160957035 and Special:Diff/1161117705. This process doesn't leave a {{cn}} tag. So there's a bunch of old references to find archives for and insert them into the affected articles.
If you're feeling particularly masochistic, there's also about 1800 citations to check across 2022 deaths in the United States (January–June) (921 footnotes, checked through 7 January) and 2022 deaths in the United States (July–December) (932 footnotes). This process involves clicking through to the source website and making sure the title, author, and date are correct and complete in the citation template, which have mostly been generated automatically. Folly Mox (talk) 10:20, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers Mox. I’ll have a good look into your suggestions at some point, but today’s a key day in my new work role’s training (replying here while on break) and I’m on a roll, so I’m probably not going to be around here much today.

Given this whole shebang, it’s probably not a bad idea for somebody to take a look at WP:NAC, and see if it needs any updates. MM (Give me info.) (Victories) 10:30, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah, definitely prioritise your job training. There will always be drudge work fixing zillions of minor Wikipedia issues when your timetable allows. I heard somewhere there's tens of thousands of cricket player substubs to be assessed for notability too, and WP:CCI could always use hands. Folly Mox (talk) 11:45, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So I think what I would say is that I don't have any problem in principle with people doing NACs of threads at ANI that have obviously run their course and for which a summary could potentially be helpful to other people, but with some caveats like "not all threads need a summary", "threads shouldn't be closed if there's been recent activity", and "no one person should be doing a large percentage of closes". In your particular case I was struck by just how many closes you were doing, and my wording (suggesting splitting your attention) was deliberate.
I don't think it's hard to find low-level article improvement tasks: in addition to the things Folly Mox mentioned, you could ask User:SuggestBot to make some suggestions, or click "Random article" and look for things that are easy to fix (bare-url references, sentence fragments, external links that should really be used as references) -- in the past I've found that maybe 1 in every 3 articles I find has something I can improve without needing to think too hard.
And of course I agree with Folly Mox's last comment. Happy editing, JBL (talk) 00:10, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think I actually used to use Suggestbot. The Article feedback thing?

I might still add my thoughts at ANI, but hopefully do not forget that I’m not supposed to close anymore. I mean, I’ve managed it so far, right? Cheers Jay. MM (Give me info.) (Victories) 06:58, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what "the article feedback thing" means, but I checked and indeed, it does look like you tried SuggestBot once, almost exactly a decade ago [1] :O
I would really like to emphasize that I don't think I'm in a position to tell you what you're "supposed" to do! I am just another volunteer, making a suggestion (that you seem to be taking seriously, which I appreciate).
All the best, JBL (talk) 22:26, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fair, fair, and you’re right, SuggestBot and Article Feedback Service was what I meant. :) Maybe ‘supposed to’, isn’t the best choice of words, but you’re definitely more… integrated? Recognised? By the community these days, than I am, so I’m inclined to listen to you. Ahah.

Just came back to this thread, to explain something, before somebody else calls it to your attention. My first part of this looks like I might be trying to take a dig at you? I assure you I’m not. If anything, my intent is to show that, yes, you’re right, I’m taking the ‘don’t close ANIs’ business seriously. It’s just that, as we know from the Timfoley close, my wording can be, well, horrendous. MM (Give me info.) (Victories) 13:10, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
