Parkman murder[edit]

Hi there. I'm afraid I've had to remove most of the additions you've made to various articles related to the Parkman murder. To include this kind of material, we'll need a reliable secondary source which both states the familial relationship and discusses its possible effects on Shaw's conduct of the trial. What you've done, unfortunately, is a classic example what we call WP:Original research and, particularly, WP:Original synthesis. Don't feel bad -- it's a common mistake for new editors, and I hope this doesn't discourage you from continuing to contribute.

I should add that those Boston Brahmins were always marrying one another, and it would probably be difficult to find a Boston judge at the time who wasn't somehow related to Parkman. EEng 03:44, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

EEng I would like to say, thanks for the edification, but I believe that I had assembled original, sourced research, including the book, "a reliable secondary source," Francis Parkman, which references familial ties to the Shaws, and stimulated my interest in editing the subject. I also included a variety of sources, none of which I authored; original research was conducted by the respective authors. The sources cited are all books that were researched by others, not original records, which would be original research. Are all of these pages not made of assembled facts from other sources?
It is obvious that, as you say, the fact that it would probably be difficult to find a Boston judge at the time who wasn't somehow related to Parkman had a fatal bearing on the trial... all the more reason to assemble published facts regarding, particularly those demonstrating close ties, as I did. It appears that the familial connections were known, but obscured, possibly deliberately, with apparent success, and so, alas, it remains.Lindenfall (talk) 15:57, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid that what WP considers original research is much broader than just research involving "original records"; please read WP:OR carefully. Does any one of your sources discuss the familial relationship and conclude this had an inappropriate influence on Shaw's conduct of the case? If so please quote the key passage. Your closing sentence suggests it may be helpful for you to review WP:GREATWRONGS as well. EEng 16:35, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
EEng Ironically, to avoid undue prejudice, I eschewed quoting sources such as: "A New York newspaper declared that pusillanimity or prejudice or something worse had swerved him the Chief Justice from the path of judicial integrity." Will that, or its original source do, then? (The source had been included in my edits: [1])Lindenfall (talk) 19:45, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm afraid it really wouldn't do. First of all, I don't see anything in that source linking the familial relationship to alleged judicial prejudice. And second, the criticism there is standard (for the time) newspaper invective in a controversial case. For something like this we need a modern comprehensive source analyzing the case in detail, something like [1], not nonspecialist partisan opinions or sources simply quoting them without informed analysis -- see WP:Identifying reliable sources (history). EEng 20:02, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
EEng re: rejected source, above — it is from the New York Globe, which, I believe, was considered a reliable news source. Newspapers are viable sources. Please explain why it won't do. Thank you.Lindenfall (talk) 20:23, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
EEng There are two issues here: the fact of the familial relationships and the judicial prejudice. I would propose to remedy that to include only the facts of relationship. (Additional quote re: familial relationships in footnote #3 of a Shaw-authored tome: https://books.google.com/books?id=6m5h0Ax6tr4C&pg=PA161.) I can reduce my edits to bare statements of the fact of familial relationships, as they are quite relevant facts, leaving any speculation of related prejudice out. I'm surprised no one has addressed the lack of this highly relevant information on these pages before.Lindenfall (talk) 20:12, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • 20th-c American newspapers are generally reliable for straight reporting of current events. 19th-c newspapers are usually not, because standards of journalism were so different then; they are primary sources by default, though they can be used, sometimes, with caution, for straight reporting of the facts of noncontroversial current events. What you are quoting is an editorial opinion, and that's not even within striking range.
  • I'm glad you see that the alleged judicial misconduct can't be included. But I'm afraid the statement of familial relationship can't either. You call it "highly relevant", but if that's so there will be a RS commenting on its relevance in the context of the case. Otherwise it's just a weird factoid: the victim's father's first wife's great-great-great-grandfather was also the great-great-great-grandfather of the judge? That is, they're 4th cousins once removed, by marriage, with no blood between them. Wow! They had a common ancestor born in 1590, but not really! Have you any idea how many relatives each of us has with that degree of consanguinity or less (except, as already mentioned, there's no actual blood relationship at all)? EEng 21:17, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
EEng The last source that I gave you states that the families were closely intertwined. You skew the facts: the victim's father was married to a cousin of Justice Shaw's (before marrying his mother), and his sister was long-married to another cousin of Shaw's... the 1590 common ancestor makes that true, but is beside the point of the relationships in their lifetimes, as stated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by talk:Lindenfall (talkcontribs)
The source says the families were closely intertwined, but says nothing about the relevance of that to the case. As far as I know I've correctly stated the relationship i.e. that S and W were no closer than 4th cousins, and apparently only by marriage. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the complicated chain outlined in the article text you added. The fact that we're having trouble even with the nature of the relationship, not to mention whether that relationship has any significance, is exactly why WP demands secondary sources, on point and in context, for everything. Do you see now why the familial relationship can't be included? EEng 23:18, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I see why any impact attached to the lineage requires very specific sources — perhaps a more encyclopedic approach than I gave it, granted. (A phrase, we follow, we do not lead, from one of the links you supplied, will forever resonate.) The lineage, without referencing the conflict of interest, however apparent, is, nonetheless valid on its own, and I don't comprehend your dismissiveness on the shared lineage — your insistence that their specific ancestry is not worthy of inclusion, even aside from the case. It's particularly difficult to ascertain a legitimate reason not to include the ancestry, sans case detail, in light of the importance of shared ancestry to Brahmin families in their time.Lindenfall (talk) 20:08, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Even overlooking past the borderline OR/SYNTH ("do not combine different parts of one source to reach or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by the source") of parsing old genealogies to conclude that X is the Ath cousin Bth removed from Y, there are literally hundreds of people with WP articles who you could mention as being related to Shaw somehow. Why should this particular relationship be called out? EEng 05:16, 28 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Why should this particular relationship be called out? The New York Globe "declared that pusillanimity or prejudice or something worse had swerved him the Chief Justice from the path of judicial integrity" remains but one obvious example of why it is significant.Lindenfall (talk) 14:47, 29 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That says nothing about any familial relationship, and even if it did, as already explained 19th-c newspaper reporting can be used only with caution; an editorial opinion is essentially useless as a fact source. I'll say it one more time: find a modern, scholarly source pointing out the relationship as significant in the context of the trial. EEng 15:05, 29 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, but your question was, why? Such as that is why.Lindenfall (talk) 15:49, 29 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The answer to why needs to be an appropriate source. EEng 19:37, 29 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed... to your concession that a why may well exist, and to the sourcing it requires to be included.Lindenfall (talk) 19:54, 29 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Er, um, well, let me know if you find a source. EEng 20:02, 29 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Joe Louis and title defenses[edit]

If Joe Louis has the 2nd most title defenses next to Cesar Chavez, who defended the title 27 times but not consecutively, then who exactly had longer title streak than Louis? This isn't me just thinking "oh, he is the best in the world!", those are NUMBERS, and numbers are not my subjective observations. --Виктор Не Вацко (talk) 18:08, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Виктор Не Вацко I understand your desire to correct information. However, you are over-reaching with information not properly sourced and drawing unsourced conclusions. I'm afraid that "logic" does not suffice on Wikipedia. It can be difficult, especially when you read aged misinformation, to adhere to Wikipedia sourcing. (I, too, learned the hard way... no original research– no matter what documentation sits unnoticed – and no new analyses or even logical conclusions... only directly sourced information is permitted, often being someone else's logical conclusions.) Mainly, you absolutely need to read the style guidelines before proceeding to further edits. In your Joe Louis re-edit today, you did provide a source, but not an adequate one to your statement, with the wrong page number (was 490, not 489), (and no link... https://books.google.com/books?id=aA2LO_DGdu4C&q=490#v=snippet&q=490&f=false), so, it's being reversed. Sources must be verifiable. News reports are often useful... if it's a logical conclusion, some professional authority has typically already arrived at it. Our job is to assemble it, encyclopedically. A lot of your recent edits will be reversed because you've done it this way, and one will only check a few, then assume the others are as poorly sourced, rather than spend extravagant amounts of time checking each one for sourcing flaws.Lindenfall (talk) 16:32, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lindenfall, what is the difference in the two refs? I think the first one is better formated.--Stone (talk) 12:24, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, STONE - it wasn't the formatting that drew my attention, but the fact that a quote became unsupported by any source after your changes, which left one source out of the mix; I noticed when another editor removed the quote, as unsupported by a source, hence the reversals. Lindenfall (talk) 17:02, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! The ref was the smaller issue. I still not convinced that the section is OK in the state it is now. The claim is huge, it mentions all the people involved, the amount of info why this is importan is missing and the response of the comunity is also missing. --Stone (talk) 05:47, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed! I was truly surprised that it took so long for anyone to even notice the new section, or comment, and had hoped for more input into it from other editors.Lindenfall (talk) 17:16, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

2019 college admissions bribery scandal discussion[edit]

Hi. Sorry about the confusion. I think you were trying to reply to the Assistant attorneys section that I had just moved under the previous discussion about Lelling. Entirely my fault but I wanted to explain what happened so you didn't get concerned for no reason. I very much apologize. - PaulT+/C 17:06, 15 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, thanks, Paul. I had actually made a new section deliberately, since no response had been gained in the old one, and still. Why anyone would delete the names of the prosecuting attorneys, or any pertinent, sourced facts, is beyond me, and annoys. Lindenfall (talk) 17:22, 15 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think one aspect of the argument is that the list of names was not notable enough for inclusion. That is debateable, but I think the main point was that it was included in the lead and then not mentioned or expanded in the main artcile text. That whole sentence was moved out of the lead after the part you added was removed, so I'm going to add it back in the new location to see if it makes sense. (To be clear, I did not remove the sentence originally and I was trying to draw attention to your query on the talk page so that the person that did would respond. Unfortunately they havent.) Adding it back somewhere other than the main summary will allow the discussion on notability to happen more explicitly. Sorry again for the mix-up. - PaulT+/C 17:49, 15 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, again, Paul. Amazing how facts are simply deleted because someone (whomever) does not care for the location within the article. (And, I was likely replacing a bare-bones or unsourced statement in place, at the time, to set it there.) Personally, I often shift details into more appropriate sections, but I never drop facts, as was done in this case. I appreciate your follow-through. Nancy Pelosi[edit]

Hi. About this edit - the reason I removed the information was because I looked for sources, and couldn't find any reliable ones to back up those specific claims. There were also some concerns about WP:UNDUE coverage in the article, and removing those helped fix that. --DannyS712 (talk) 00:58, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Seemed a good faith edit, as noted. I'd found a source: herself, so restored it. Thanks for looking for one though... far too frequently, I see articles gutted of valid information simply because it's so much easier to delete than add a source... not great for the knowledge-base, though, so I am always on the look out in my watch list for any large or unnecessary deletions. You deleted a huge number of images of notable white figures in the history of their countries, of which actually they have to do with the article, if you don't believe take a look at the Black People article that has Michael Jordan, Barack Obama, a Spanish singer, Mary Seacole, Louis Amstrong, a famous judge of the US and others as images in the article. you don't do the same in that article because your editions are based. if you also don't "fix" the Black People article, I'm going to revert your editions of the white people's article.--BrugesFR (talk) 15:44, 2 October 2019 (UTC

@BrugesFR:. I deleted the images on a page that I had happened to come across because I thought those images were gratuitous celebrity images, more WP:Promo than illustrative. The fact that I haven't since ventured to another page to do likewise (yet, or at all) means nothing, except in your own apparently vivid imagination. I assume, by "based", you'd meant biased? The edits were not biased, other than for the good of WP. (Were I to exercise my actual bias, I'd spend a whole lot more time on Trump's pages, but, alas, I resist most such urges.) Are you at all familiar with WP:Civil, WP:Harrassment#Threat, or WP:Personal attack? ...all of which you are violating. Lindenfall (talk) 18:34, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you know, it's not celebrities, it's people of that color who have stand out more by doing more for the society in which they live, you deleted every good example of it from every country. There are images like this, that serves for the same purpose, like good examples, in the sections of the articles all over wikipedia. As you know, I'm going to revert those editions. Your assertions are invalid and cannot be made in any of the related articles, because none are included because they are mere celebrities or to promote them. Different is the case if it place models of beauty, but it place it is to prominent people who have left an impact.--BrugesFR (talk) 19:09, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The images that I deleted and you have restored are of celebrities. "French-Argentine singer and composer, considered the most important tango singer", for instance, has nothing whatsoever to do with the article; it is gratuitous, so WP:Promo. I'll not engage in one of your edit wars, @BrugesFR:. Lindenfall (talk) 22:05, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

he is posted in the article because it is a notable figure in the history of Argentina, not for promotion. what difference does it make if it was a legend of football, painting, music or politics, no matter its profession, it is included there because he is considered the best all-time Argentine singer and was of European descent and white--BrugesFR (talk) 22:32, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@BrugesFR:, that "he is posted in the article because it is a notable figure in the history of Argentina" and "it is included there because he is considered the best all-time Argentine singer and was of European descent and white" is promotion of that individual. The article is neither about Argentina, nor singers. Lindenfall (talk) 17:59, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Of course they have something in common with those articles, they are of white majority ancestry and they are considered white. So Then discuss that on every page where that happens, especially in Blacks, African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Native Americans, Hindus, Italians, Spaniards, Mexicans, Salvadorans, Canadians, Germans, Jamaican-British articles etc., and let's see if you can change those articles and what they answer.--BrugesFR (talk) 13:55, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:49, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I noticed you have edited this page a bit in the past few months and were involved in a 2019 RfC that is under discussion now on the article talk page. I stumbled on this situation while patrolling the "admin-help" category and acted as I read the current consensus, but I just wanted to ping you in case you saw things differently or wanted to review the change I made / the COI user has suggested. Thanks! Go Phightins! 00:04, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, @Go Phightins!:. Personally, I would move the second paragraph of the lead down to the introduction to the Notable attorneys and alumni section, but will leave it be. Despite the 'no greater weight' opinion policy espoused there by both of you, it apparently takes an admin to straighten out a page when various editors consistently try to transform its purpose with coatracking or COI interests, or both, and I thank you for doing so. Due to my ineffectiveness there, and the potential for edit warring, I gave up on trying to police that lead, knowing that Admin MelanieN had an eye on it. Lindenfall (talk) 16:58, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Lindenfall, you might want to put it back on your radar - since I apparently missed the against-consensus change, both when it was done and for quite a while afterward. I think I just have too many pages on my watchlist and can't keep up with all of them. -- MelanieN (talk) 17:17, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
All right. I just feel like it's a dukefest with certain determined editors disrupting the genre, as I think you know. Maybe I'll watch more and whine in your general direction as needed, so they don't prevail, though I was trying to let you be, no doubt busy enough... ie: I see that there are still a couple of pol names in the lead there, seems against consensus. Thanking attentive you, Lindenfall (talk) 17:29, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, those two names were 2-in-favor-2-against in the RfC. Phigtins read that as acceptable to include, and I respect his reading of it. Please don't hesitate to give me a yell if the article, or other articles, need help. I will try to respond promptly, or as soon I am online (not always the case nowadays, Real Life can sometimes interfere). -- MelanieN (talk) 18:31, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to yield my ingrained need for uniformity in general. Your work here is appreciated, as is the work of Phigtins. Lindenfall (talk) 18:59, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fake history alert[edit]

Hi Lindenfall,

I have spent a lot of time rewriting an article on Lake Borgne that was written in 2009. The person that created the article wrote what he wanted. On those rare occasions where he did use sources for other articles, he did not cite but plagiarised. He got in trouble for this, bullying and sockpuppetry which has seen his accounts being indefinitely suspended. In essence, anything he has touched is highly suspect.

I came across one article he wrote, which was about something that did happen, but it took tens of man-hours to re-write, adding primary and secondary sources, and removing most of the fantasy that he had written.

I have come across one further article that he wrote in 2009, with no sources whatsoever, and this is very concerning. He has created an article about a "battle" that does not exist, one for which there is no battle honor that is upheld by the US Navy. (If the USN does not consider a firefight to be a battle, why does he?)

I have asked for this to be deleted, because it is pure fantasy, and the skirmish that occurred that day is summarized in one paragraph in the Battle of Lake Borgne article. The source materials are in the public domain, and easily accessible. I have found the histories by Clowes and Roosevelt to be of interest. The primary source accounts, in the form of Jones's letter, is in Brannan and Latour. The Lockyer account of the activities from December 12 through December 14 are preproduced in the London Gazette.

Please can you read my request for the article to be deleted, and add a comment if you also feel it should not be on wikipedia. I think it degrades the credibility of wikipedia as a resource. Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Action_of_13_December_1814

On the talk page for this bogus article, I have given further reasons as to why I am of the opinion this fantasy content should be deleted.

I shudder to think what other fantasies have been added to Wikipedia and never fact-checked. Regards Keith H99 (talk) 08:29, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Well-spotted. It's exactly the sort of thing that got me here... and what a mammoth task. Best, Lindenfall (talk) 02:40, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
