REAL STORY NARRATED BY PALAYPU KISHAN PRASAD on the life of his Grand Mother.

This is the page on the Life History of my grandmother. My Grand Mother PALAYPU RUKKAMMA, now 85 years old, is a legendary personality. It is very interesting to read her story as follows: She was married when she was 9 years old and she was the young girl child of a widowed young mother to whom my grandmother was born to an old man in the year 1923. She was living with her Grandfather who was hawking Food on the Railway platform of a small village called Udkudi near Tiruppur of Tamilnadu in Southern India. My grandfather is from a place called Dharmapuri of Karimnagar District of Andhra Pradesh, then part of Nizam State an ally of British Crown. My Grand Father's Grand Mother was keen to get my Grand Father married from Down South by paying 'Kanya Sulkam' with the help of a tout. My grand mother was bought for Rs.500 and for the marriage another Rs.500 was spent. My Grand Father was taken by a team of touts for the marriage from the South Indian village. They misrepresented Dharmapuri to be the one near Salem and thus got the young girl married to my Grand Father. They travelled by train for about three days to enter Nizam territory and reach Dharmapuri of Nizam Stage. The young tamil girl was brought to the village of my Grand Father and my grand mother did not know local Telugu language and it took quite some time for her to adjust in the new environment. Within twelve years of marriage, three children were born and the eledest son was my father and other two children could not survive due to poverty and lack of resource for proper care and medication. My father was born in the year 1939 when my grand mother was hardly 16 years old. Around 1944 when my father was about 5 years old, my Grand Father has died of some illness thus my grand mother has become a widow at the age of 22 years thus the family had two widowed ladies, one mother of my deceased grand father and my grand mother a young widow. The family was left in neck deep debts raised by my grand father's mother for the purpose of the marriage of my grand father with my grand mother.

My grand mother without having any formal education, not knowing any language, took up a job as a cook in a land-lord's house in a near by town called Peddapalli of Karimnagar District of AP. She left Dharmapuri in search of job and reached her new place of work as cook some time around 1945. She worked as cook during day time and in spare time she used to fetch drinking water from a deep open well and sell 6 paise one vessel thus she earned money working day and night and saved enough to discharge the debt her mother-in-law [i.e. mother of my grand father] has raised for the purpose of marriage of my grand father with my grand mother. My Grand Mother has worked from 1945 till 1965 for full 20 years and got my father educated to become a post graduate in economics from Osmania University in the year 1961. Later my father continued taking up Research in Economics and simultaneously took up odd jobs of teaching for about two years and gave relief to my grandmother from working from 1965, when he has got a job as Probationary Officer of State Bank of India. Thus with her hard work our family has come out of problems and life has started become relatively easier and comfortable day by day.

It used to be child marriages in those days as such my father was married when he was just 15 years old ie. about the year 1954 when my mother was just 9 years old. I was born when my father was about 20 years and in MA previous i.e. in the year 1960, on February 15 in Dharmapuri Village itself. Later my younger brother Laxmi Prasad was born in the year 1966, on April 06 in Adilabad where my uncle was working in Revenue Department, last my youngest brother, Rajeshwar Prasad was born in Peddapalli on 21st September 1968.

I have become a Chartered Accountant after finishing my graduation in Science from Saifabad Science College, Osmania University. My brother has also finished his Chartered Accountancy after graduating in Commerce from Badruka College of Commerce, Osmania University. My youngest brother has finished his graduation and started helping me and my brother in our professional careers we have established soon after we have finished our Chartered Accountancy. Later my brother, Laxmi Prasad has migrated to USA in the year 1997 and completed his CPA and established himself as a successful entrepreneur by setting up a company called IBSN to process US Tax Returns and the company does almost US$10 million.

Thus my grand mother's hard work has brought our family to this stage. She was in US for about 5 years with my brother until my father was seriously ill due to parkinsonism and expired on April 5, 2006.

This is in brief the story of my Grand Mother who has really brought out one family from utter poverty to full prosperity. Like this there may be several such stories on this Globe.
