US Regions Page Rewrite

I have rewritten the project page and made some clarifacations and renamed some terms. To avoid editing conflicts please do not edit the pages until everyone has had a chance to review it. I have archived the talk pages, so please post your comments there, or at least acknowledge that you have viewd the page and had no comments. Since there were no objections to the non-official (now Non-Census Bureau) regions infoboxes or Davodd's parentage proposal, I have included them in the page.

Please review the page as soon as convenient.

U.S. Regions Edit

Hi, I noticed a little while ago that you restored a quote of Hernando de Soto to Socialism -- and a few minutes later it was removed again. I don't have the time or energy to debate whether it belonged or not; I simply wanted to point out to you that if you are interested, the article on De Soto could use a little work; I started a stub last fall and it hasn't progressed much beyond that. Inland Empire

Hi there, The northwestern Inland Empire isn't just Eastern Washington, but also includes NE Oregon, N Idaho, and extreme western Montana. At least that's what Webster's Geo Dictionary says. At the very least I feel it includes northern Idaho. Any objections to my changing things to reflect this? (I'm asking you in particular because I saw you were involved in the discussion at Inland Empire (California).

categories LatAm writers

hi, I have mixed feelings about the current Categories scheme, but I suppose if we don't implement them, others will. Although the fashion seems to be otherwise [1], I would argue for a few, very broad categories to start with, such as, very simply, "Latin American writers". I noticed that you filed Borges the other day under "Argentine writers". Given that that category is liable to remain fairly small for the forseeable future, would you object changing it to "Latin American writers"? This way, I don't have to create separate categories for writers from Chile and other South American countries. -- Viajero 06:47, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)

1970 election figures

Hello there. We both added voting numbers to Chilean coup of 1973 yesterday. Unfortunately, the two sets don't agree; the differences are pretty trivial, however. Can I ask where you got yours from? I'm actually a step or two ahead of you, having started 1970 Chilean presidential election earlier today. I'm inclined to come out in favour of my figs from the PDBA: the percentages there do add up to 100%; the ones in the pdf you quoted and here (sorry, I only saw the note after writing) only total 99 -- perhaps they're percentages of total votes cast, including spoilt/blank papers? (Actually, the pdf at one point gives Allende 36.3 and, at another, 36.6; he also writes "Allesandri" on p. 21.) So, standardize on the PDBA figs in the coup article, and explore discrepancies (or investigate further and reach a definitive answer) in the election article. I don't know who to believe any more. I thought the PDBA figs would be good, but using the figures on their table, {votes per candidate} / {total votes} does not give the percentages they indicate (they give 36.23, 35.70, and 27.90 if you're interested). That has somewhat undermined my confidence in them. I've found another set here, which does give the 36.3 & 35.3 percentages most frequently cited (and the address of an academic we could perhaps e-mail for clarification, or at least a cite of his source).

Re your comment about minor candidates -- I honestly don't think there were any: it was a strict 3-way race, as far as I've ever heard. But I'd be happy to be set straight on that. The figs quoted on the Idea International page give a higher total vote: perhaps that takes care of spoilt/blank votes, and the PDBA numbers are just the valid vote. I tweaked the table on the article to indicate that assumption ("valid votes". But it's still not terribly clear.

I'm also going to copy-and-paste both sides of this exchange to Talk:1970 Chilean presidential election, which might save someone some investigative work in the future. Hello, Jmabel. I'm Comae, from the Spanish Wikipedia. Si no te importa, sigo en castellano, porque mi inglés es bastante malo. Siento el problema con el artículo Bombardeo de Guernica. El artículo lo empecé yo, consultando fuentes diversas y redactando la práctica totalidad del artículo, pero hace poco otro usuario (LievenX) agregó el texto de un libro, sin que lo supiéramos. Aún no sé si dispone de permiso pero, como este usuario es nuevo (llevaba 2 días registrado cuando lo hizo), probablemente ignoraba las políticas de Wikipedia. Imagino que gran parte de la traducción que hiciste seguirá siendo utilizable, y lamento profundamente lo ocurrido. El compromiso de la Wikipedia en español con el cumplimiento de la licencia GFDL es completo (además, en la ley española no existe el "fair use"), y revisamos continuamente los contenidos agregados por usuarios nuevos o no registrados, pero esta vez se nos había escapado. The copyrighted parts have been removed from the Spanish version (we have reverted it). All the text is now GFDL'd (I should know, since I wrote it...). Robespierre

Actually, the duration of an inuse stub is entirely at the discretion of the person who is making the edits. Feel free to edit yourself, I am merely trying to contain too much interference. The simple fact is that this article is such a seething mess that it is not going to be resolved overnight. It would probably have been better not to have started with the 1911 article which is prima facie POV apologetics for Robespierre. However, this is the start point and I will have this article sorted if it kills me ;) Sjc
