Generative AI and Wikipedia research[edit]

Hi InvadingInvader,

My name is Dr. Tim Koskie and I am a researcher at the Centre for Media Transition (CMT) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). We are conducting a study on the implications of content-generating AI systems such as ChatGPT for knowledge integrity on Wikipedia, and are approaching you because you have participated in discussions on this topic on Wikimedia pages.

If you are interested, we would like to invite you to participate in our study. It would involve joining either a focus group discussion or an interview (around 1 hour), in person at Wikimania in Singapore if you are going to be there, or online at a future date. At these sessions we would ask you questions about how you think generative AI will impact Wikipedia, as well as about the kinds of work you do on Wikipedia.

The project is funded by the Wikimedia Research Fund grant programme. You can find out more about the project here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Implications_of_ChatGPT_for_knowledge_integrity_on_Wikipedia If you are interested, let me know and I will forward you some more detailed information on the project. Tbkoskie (talk) 04:09, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sadly I do not think I will be able to participate due to scheduling constraints and time zone differences. I appreciate the thought though! InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 16:09, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, we appreciate your contributions to the discussion! The 12-hour time difference, give or take, is a potential issue for many. Thanks for responding and participating in the discussion. Tbkoskie (talk) 23:57, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

New pages patrol invitation[edit]

Hello, InvadingInvader.
  • The new pages patrol team is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles and redirects needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
  • I believe that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
  • If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

Hello, InvadingInvader. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Smartphone cinematography".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been deleted. When you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Liz Read! Talk! 23:10, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your closing of RfC at Amhara genocide[edit]

Hi. I see you closed the RfC. I think you made a tiny mistake when you updated your closing statement. You changed if from

There is a clear consensus that ethnic violence and massacres against the Amhara people are not to be stated as a genocide
— [1]

to

There is a clear consensus that ethnic violence and massacres against the Amhara people are not to be stated in wikivoice.
— [2]

I assume that you did not intend to remove the "as a genocide" when you added "in wikivoice"? -- Random person no 362478479 (talk) 17:16, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi there; yes I did not mean to. I can fix it. Sorry about the confusion! InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 17:17, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No problem. -- Random person no 362478479 (talk) 17:18, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can you elaborate your closure? Out of the three editors that are in favour of only keeping right-wing, only one presented evidence and factual claims. The second editor with anti-leftist bias presented their emotional commentary while the third claims that the party is "broadly right-wing" which is completely made up and not backed up by a single source. You should reconsider whether this RfC actually leans to only use right-wing in the infobox. Vacant0 (talk) 18:09, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sure thing – let me read through it again so I can more formally address your concerns. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:40, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Vacant0 I might actually re-close it as No Consensus. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:41, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You could re-read it if you want to, I'm not forcing your or anything. If you think that the RfC's outcome was different (no consensus), then it's up to you to change it, since you are the closer after all. This article is controversial so a more elaborate explanation would better suit the close. Vacant0 (talk) 18:46, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Understood. I think that I botched this the first time and it should be closed as a No Consensus, which should be online right now. Thanks for pointing out my mistake. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:49, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No problem. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes so it's alright. Vacant0 (talk) 18:51, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

2022 in the U.S.[edit]

I saw your comment at the RfC about working on 2022 in the United States, but I didn't want to bring the discussion too far off topic.

Having tried both "find sources related to topics" and "use year in review sources", I've found that the latter really is easier and I think it makes a better end product. It might work even better with the U.S. because I'm finding that I (unsurprisingly) have to dodge a lot of U.S. specific sourcing. On 2001, for example, I used the Time Year in Review magazine, which was tremendously helpful, where half was U.S. and half was international. I tried to find the 2022 version, but I didn't see any digitized version. For reference, here is the 2019 edition. But that brings up a worry in that 2022 is going to be a difficult year to work with because it's so recent. With that said, there are still plenty of general summation of the year type sources.

Another helpful source is annual reports from research groups, NGOs, or intergovernmental organizations. Most fields are going to publish some sort of year in review. For example, I've used reports that detailed all of the world's major conflicts in the year, which was much easier than trying to sort through the conflicts one at a time (which also had an original research element to it). One thing to watch out for with this is that the reports are often named for the year they're published. A lot of reports about 2022 might be named "Report on Subject 2023". I'm still in the process of making these changes at 2001, but 2002 provides the skeleton of an article that only uses broader sources (I intend to flesh it out more once I'm satisfied with 2001).

At least, these are the things that worked for me. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 16:54, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I would definitely concur with year in review sources, but I do think that given there is a much more localized focus on the US, there needs to be some relativity to the topic. This is where we can dive a bit more into the topic, though not too much since it's still a year article and not every argument that the pro choice and pro life sides. You are more than welcome to contribute, btw, and the offer is extended to all editors who wish to help on this daunting task.
If you'd like to know my roadmap so far for the article, I'd say this:
1. Politics. Scandals, elections, legislation. Maybe court cases; IDK whether to put the courts and notable decisions from them under politics or their owns section.
2. Sports. Team USA on the world stage, league and event championships, MVPs, notable injuries, and for this year definitely the collapse of the Pac-12.
3. Economy. Business mergers and acquisitions, inflation, economic policy, all the CNBC stuff.
4. Culture. Trends, religion, fashion, media and memes.
5. Disasters.
6. Technology.
7. Event list InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 17:05, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Looks like a good plan to me. One other worry is that in terms of pure wikitext size, 2022 in the United States is pretty huge already. If a large amount of content is going to be added, it might need a major trimming of minor events or those that had no effect outside of one state (I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with 2022 in California and 2022 in Texas). But again, I'm not trying to say what you "should" be doing. I'm just thinking about things that might come up. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 17:30, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Don't worry, I'm keeping an eye on it. Most of those single state events are mass shootings anyway. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 17:46, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
