Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello InilanNahklia! Your additions to Martin Baker (police officer) have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 13:53, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've also removed copied non-free content from Debbie Simpson (police officer). Is there any copied content on your large edit to Throop, Dorset? If so, please mention it here on this page (with the source(s) you took from) so that that too can be cleaned up. And ... please take care not do any more of this. Thank you, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 13:57, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Justlettersandnumbers - yes there is definitely copyvio. For example the sentence "On 1st April 2019, a petition with nearly 300 signatures...." looks like an almost exact copy/paste from here. It looks like there is other copyvio in the latter parts of the edit. I'd suggest reverting and striking the whole edit. 10mmsocket (talk) 21:35, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No need to strike the whole edit, I'll amend it myself, apologies for the error.

Copyright violation[edit]

18 months ago you were warned about copyright violation. Why have you done the exact same thing again today with virtually direct copy/paste of text from Dorset Police's website, together with photographs that are clearly not released under a commons compatible licence? Please re-read the section above about copyright violation. 10mmsocket (talk) 21:00, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

InilanNahklia, I see that you've made some effort to rearrange the words of the text you copied – thanks for at least trying to avoid copyright violation. Unfortunately just changing a few words and moving a few others does not solve the problem – that is what we call close paraphrasing, and may in some circumstances create a derivative work which still infringes copyright. For example, if the source reads:

Our neighbourhood policing teams are split into two local policing areas

it's not going to be OK to write:

Dorset Police's neighbourhood policing teams are split between two local policing areas

.
That whole paragraph was obviously the same text with minor alterations (and still complete with the illiterate use of "closer" as the comparative of "closely"). Text you write here must be entirely in your own words. And by the way it also needs to be supported by independent reliable sources, so adding stuff from the website of the force is not really helpful. Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 11:30, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You are developing a large article in your sandbox[edit]

Before you expend any more effort on it please stop, step back, and consider the question: "Is this list really a miscellaneous collection of material unrelated by anything except murder and a large county for location?"

WP:MISCELLANY applies to this in my view.

I don't want you to head off on a wild goose chase, so I suggest you check at WP:TEAHOUSE whether I am correct by asking the neutral question, in whatever words you choose: "I have been developing an article on "a list of unlawful deaths, in the form of murders and manslaughters, that occurred in the county of Dorset, in the south of the United Kingdom, between the year 2000 and the present day. in User:InilanNahklia/sandbox. A editor has expressed a concern to me that I should take advice here before working more on it, Please may I have your thoughts?" I've tried hard to ensure that the suggested question is neutral so that you do not bias your advisors for or against the draft article.

I don't want to discourage you from editing, though my nomination of some of your articles for deletion may feel that way. I want to help you use your energy and enthusiasm in a way that will benefit both you and Wikipedia. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 12:27, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Pedigree Chum dog food and Heinz extortion campaign[edit]

Hello, InilanNahklia,

Thank you for creating Pedigree Chum dog food and Heinz extortion campaign.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

Hi Inilan, nice work on your new article. It requires additional sourcing, as it currently relies on only two sources. It should also be added to relevant Wikiprojects and categories. No other articles link to it, so it will currently be hard to find.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Bastun}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

The page Killing of Simon Shotton has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appeared to be about a real person or group of people that did not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

Please do not recreate the material without addressing these concerns, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If you think this page should not have been deleted for this reason, or you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
