Question from Colourfulify (08:15, 6 August 2023)[edit]

Hi, I’ve created an account because I was reading the article on AE Bassom (who is an ancestor of mine) and noticed there was no picture on the page. I actually have a portrait of him in my house and was hoping I might be able to upload it or send it to someone involved in writing the page so it could be included. How would I go about doing this? Thanks for your help! Article here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._E._Bassom --Colourfulify (talk) 08:15, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Colourfulify, hello and welcome to Wikipedia! And thanks for wanting to contribute an image. There are annoying rules about copyright, but this should be doable.
Per what I read at A. E. Bassom, your portrait may be considered public domain, basically "the creator of a work has been deceased for more than 70 years", but I can't know, maybe you do. If so you upload your picture HERE. That is a link to Commons, a sister-site where we keep "free" images.
If you're not confident the picture is public domain, we can still use it per something called "fair use". If so, go here: WP:FUW, choose "Upload a non-free file" > "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use." > "This is a historical portrait of a person no longer alive."
After you've uploaded it, you can add it to the article, directions at Help:Infobox picture, or you can tell me and I'll do it.
Hope this helps! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:41, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Malicious disruptive editing on Simon Ekpa[edit]

I want you to take a look at what they did to that article page Simon Ekpa. They moved it Namespace. 1st Contributor (talk) 13:53, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Seems dealt with for now. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:21, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I and Borgenland recommend
adequate/appropriate sanctions be taken against that user. That was intentional disruptive editing on their part.
They will try it again if they are not appropriately dealt with. Thanks for your swift actions 1st Contributor (talk) 14:28, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
An admin agreed with you. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:38, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Done already. 1st Contributor (talk) 14:39, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi there, I apologize for my WikiTree (volunteer) colleagues being so annoying on that article and not being capable of writing adequately for WP. I hope I will be able to clean it up, once the smoke clears and people forgot about that article again - in case it survives.

Kind regards from Black Forest to Sweden --Flominator (talk) 18:30, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Flominator, thank you for your kind message, it is appreciated. I think the article is likely to get at least a no consensus keep, though I do suspect some sort of WP:CANVASSing going on. These things can get much worse, Talk:Palmer Report is an example. And sometimes, things just work out: Talk:Wally_Green_(table_tennis)#Conflict_of_interest_editing. Question from Its All About You 123 (16:54, 18 August 2023)[edit]

Hi, how can you create wikepida site --Its All About You 123 (talk) 16:54, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Its All About You 123 Hello! I assume you mean a Wikipedia article.
First you need to make sure you have the reliable sources (WP:RS) demanded, see WP:BACKWARD and WP:N. If you don't, your article will not be accepted. Next, you need to know how to edit, especially how to add references correctly, this is essential. WP:TUTORIAL can help with that. Then, you can move on to Help:Your first article.
Note that trying to make an acceptable WP-article without any previous WP-experience is difficult, there are a lot of rules around, especially if you intend to write about living people (WP:BLP). It's highly recommended to first get some WP-experience by editing/improving existing articles for a while. If you intend to make an article about yourself, forget it (WP:AUTO).
Hope this helps some! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:14, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Kincsk (14:49, 22 August 2023)[edit]

Hi there. I am representing the FD Foundation and the FD Center. Families have expressly requested that two photos be removed and replaced with less personal images (medically related illustrations, charts, and so on) on the page. I made an attempt to remove the pages a few weeks ago and someone named "Onorem" objected and put them back. I do not know who created the page in the first place but it is badly in need of more up to date information as well. Can you help me deal with the photo issue first? Thanks a lot! --Kincsk (talk) 14:49, 22 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Kincsk Hello and welcome to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia filled with all kinds of strange rules and customs, but we mean well. And ping to @Onorem.
Kincsk, I don't know how familiar you are with WP-stuff, but as you can see here: [1] Onorem gave a reason for reverting you, and it's not an unreasonable one. You could have reached out to Onorem at their talkpage, but we learn the strange ways of WP as we go along, and nothing says we can't start a discussion here.
Wikipedia generally lacks good pictures we can use per laws and rules, and it would probably help if you uploaded your replacements first. However, not having seen your suggested replacements, it's possible that other editors such as myself and Onorem don't agree that your replacements are as good/better, and want to keep the current pictures anyway because we think it's better for the article. Note also that your replacements have to be usable here, meaning that they must be licensed under one of the "ok" licenses here:[2]. There are a couple of ways to do that. Copyright stuff is a pain.
Onorem, however, there is another aspect now (wasn't mentioned when you reverted) per Kincsk's OP: "Families have expressly requested..." Per WP:BLPKIND, I think removing the pictures for now is acceptable. What do you say?
The Familial dysautonomia article was created in 2004 by an editor who hasn't edited since 2006, so that doesn't help but it also doesn't matter. I don't doubt it's in pretty bad shape, there's an appalling amount of [citation needed], and if you, Kincsk, is interested in improving it, be WP:BOLD, but learn how to edit WP first, and check WP:OWN, "approved by the Familial Dysautonomia Foundation in New York" is not an argument that will get you far around here. What you need to do is to cite WP:MEDRS sources. It's very much not my area, but you may be able to get some helpful input at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Medicine. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:15, 22 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
One more thing, Kincsk. Check File:Riley day.jpg and scroll down to "File usage on other wikis". English WP is not the only user of this image. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:21, 22 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've sought more input at Commons:Help_desk#"Families_have_expressly_requested_that_two_photos_be_removed...". You are welcome to comment there. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:42, 23 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Comment From Oldsilenus[edit]

Thank you again for your correction about the source of that Wikipedia article on Vesna Goldsworthy. I mentioned to User:cullen328 that Facebook mistakenly made me a friend of Vesna Goldsworthy. He did not think that this precluded me from editing her page. She is the one who, in a momentary lapse, told me that the Serbian government asked people to edit her Swedish page and gave me the URL. II really wondered why the page used Cyrillic characters in the URL if it was from Sweden. I must check with the English Wikipedia people if computerized translations of thee references there are acceptable. I will ask you a question at another time. One reference notes her praise from a Nobel laureate. At least in translation the name of the laureate is incorrect (as per Vesna). I will give you the URL of the reference and the two names at a later time. Vesna is really dissatisfied with her English Wikipedia article. I don't do much editing, so things are going slowly, I did get her picture into Wikimedia. It is on her English article. You or an acquaintance may want to add it to her Serbian article. Thanks very much.Oldsilenus (talk) 21:21, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have no intention to edit Serbian WP, don't know the language. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:28, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Official notification[edit]

@Gråbergs Gråa Sång I want to officially notify you that l have informed Simon Ekpa about the development issues encountered on adding image to the article page Simon Ekpa. He promised to assign a new user to do it. But please, don't mistake the image on Flickr as the one formerly added and it was copyvio. You can check the differences! The former image was 2017 Finnish municipal election but the one found on Flickr is portrait he took on 7th September 2023. Don't mistake the two images please. I hope this message gets to you wel. WondersShallNeverEnd (talk) 18:30, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Fwiw, I did notice it was different from the 2017 image,[4] I've become somewhat familiar with that one and would have said so. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:44, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Glad you understand. So, what's way forward now in your own suggestions? The image will hopefully be added at the end of the day. WondersShallNeverEnd (talk) 18:49, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have given the advice I intend to give on Talk:Simon Ekpa and ANI today. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:50, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok. Expect the image being readded. If you noticed, Simon Ekpa took that portrait image specifically for the sole purpose of it being added to Wikipedia. WondersShallNeverEnd (talk) 18:54, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång
What if l get Simon Ekpa to upload the image on his website? I mean his own personal website. Or most probably, get inform him to write an email according to Wikimedia rules? Will the portrait be accepted? Will it be uploaded to Wikimedia commons and Simon Ekpa Wikipedia article page? I am being curious here! WondersShallNeverEnd (talk) 06:32, 10 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Could work. Consider these examples: [5], copyright notice (in english) at bottom of page and [6], copyright notice under picture, left side. Like I've noted on WP and Commons, COM:VRT exists, but I'm told you (plural (?), as in various Ekpa-image uploaders) have tried that before, so anything you try by now will probably be met with skepticism, you have shot yourself in the foot on this issue. Still, if you do it right, either of these approaches might work. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:08, 10 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, yea. Those are originational websites like this one here It shows collection of portraits of BRGIE cabinets. The problem here is how to technically add that license on the left side of second website here Please continue guiding me through as we pull this out together. Honestly, l am the one in the mess here. WondersShallNeverEnd (talk) 07:47, 10 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's something you have to figure out for yourself. I'm not going to upload anything to Commons on your behalf, but if you are VRT-successful, I will consider adding that image to the Ekpa WP-article. These may or may not be of some help to you:WP:When your boss tells you to edit Wikipedia and WP:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:55, 10 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok. Best regards! WondersShallNeverEnd (talk) 07:58, 10 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Jasssiiii (12:52, 14 September 2023)[edit]

Hi I want to add a article on wikipedia. Will you please help me? --Jasssiiii (talk) 12:52, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jasssiiii First, you need to make sure you have the sources demanded at WP:NOTABILITY. If you don't, the article will not be accepted. Next, you need to know something about how to edit, especially how to add references correctly, this is essential. See WP:TUTORIAL, and it's advised to spend some time learning editing existing articles before trying to create one yourself. If you intend to write about a living person, see WP:BLP. Next: Help:Your first article. And if you intend to write an article about yourself, don't. Hope this helps! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:07, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Just wanted to say, I think you're cool![edit]

Hi there, I'm a long-time en.wiki reader (and besides the Internet Archive, it's been my most consistent charitable donation) who has started "finding my sea legs" as a contributor over the past year. I've been an English language editor for 20 years, so I'm focused in on GOCE tasks at first, as I absorb and grasp the much more complex policies and guidelines for the rest of the 'Pedia.

I'm one of those "read the whole manual 3x before assembling" types, so much of the past year has included reading historical noticeboards of all types, and clicking through to observe the dialogue of Wikipedians actively pursuing consensus in various contexts.

Time and again I have seen your username crop up, in tireless contribution and navigation of questions. (Most recently, I believe, at the RSN.) I finally became curious and clicked through to ask about the origin of your name here, but found you were kind enough to provide that info in the very beginning of your userpage! ☺️ What a lovely and interesting poem, thanks for that.

I spent about 5 years, just before COVID, giving my everything to help run an anarchist hackerspace. I saw first-hand everyday how messy, stressful, and beautifully imperfect the consensus-building process is among human beings, and I see that again across the pages of en.wiki's history. Contributors like yourself, who I see consistently focusing on the material, content-focused concerns of building an open encyclopedia, are of crucial importance. Human drama arises, but keeping a cool head and a neutral tone helps guide us back on track, to focus on the collaborative work rather than our differences of opinion.

I don't know how to "present diffs" quite yet, lol, and I don't have any specific examples in the front of my mind, but I have this deep and consistent impression of you as one of these patient shepherds of the over-excited Commons. So in my eyes, your contributions here reach beyond content, to fostering great and workable community and communication.

Thanks for all you do, you inspire me to keep learning the ropes and find the best ways I can contribute in the long term. Have a great day! From Chelsea aka Chiselinccc (talk) 22:06, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you very much! "Knowledge production, at least in the Wikipedia sense, is part collaboration and part combat." Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:34, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for your note on Vesna Goldsworthy's talk page[edit]

I just noted your note on Vesna Goldsworthy's talk page regarding the use of "currently". I appreciate it. I, however, was not responsible for that line. Someone else has been editing her lead section and they wrote it. I have removed it. Oldsilenus (talk) 17:41, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

And I tweaked it again. The good thing about wording like "as of 2023", is that this will still be correct even if she leaves the position and no WP-editors notice it. That is the point of MOS:DATED. It's good for jobs, marriages and all kinds of things. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:01, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks again. I actually came back to correct my prior note. It should have said: I don't think I wrote that line. :) Oldsilenus (talk) 18:26, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Help with Another Tweak[edit]

Vesna Goldsworthy actually became a Professor of Ceative Writing when she joined the University of Exeter. Her university web page states that she Joined in 2017, but does not give her initial faculty rank. I obtained a copy of her CV which documents that she was hired as a full professor. I imagine MOS:DATED would allow me to write "Goldsworthy became a Professor of Creative Literature at the University of Exeter in 2017". My real question is do I have to document the date. Her e-mail is given on her Univesity Web page, and I assume an interested party would receive a copy of it if they requested it.[1] There is no formal template for a CV citation, but I suppose one could modify the Journal article template as necessary. Thanks once again.Oldsilenus (talk) 22:50, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

In a WP:BLP, you should cite everything. Privately obtained e-mails are not something that can be used on WP, we are here to summarize published stuff. This applies even if others could ask for the same e-mail. Cite web template is fine for the Exeter profile. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 05:58, 22 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks once again. I noticed that you removed the Stub label. I appreciate that as well. If I had a request if would be to remove the request for a photo on the article's Talk Page. A photo was posted weeks ago. I do understand that you have more important things to do! Oldsilenus (talk) 23:47, 22 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Oldsilenus Nothing prevents you from doing that, just remove the specific code at [8]. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:01, 23 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As always thanks. I am always surprized about what I can do. I usually assume that I cannot. I must be more active so that I am able to access the Gale Database. Oldsilenus (talk) 20:32, 23 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Okuhle2008 on Geluksburg (09:17, 25 September 2023)[edit]

Hello How do I add a photo on Wikipedia or should I create my own page --Okuhle2008 (talk) 09:17, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Okuhle2008 Hello and welcome! This is (or can be) a very complex area. Do you want to add a picture to the Geluksburg article? If you're thinking of a photo you found online somewhere, then the answer is almost certainly no, copyright rules are a pain in the ass. But if you're thinking about a photo you have taken yourself with your own camera you probably can. Let me know which it is. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:32, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
