Pre-arranged transfers

Hi GS, Just a quick one regarding your reverting of my edit on Isaac Olaofe. The transfer was agreed on 30 December 2022,[1] with his contract at Stockport County beginning on 1 January. For any pre-arranged transfer, surely the player stops being a player at their former club on 31 December 2022 at 23:59:59, and becomes a player for their new club on 1 January at 00:00:00? Just makes more sense in my opinion. Any deals finalised on 1 January, sure, put the date to 2023, but this one appears to have been pre-arranged, meaning Olaofe was not a Millwall player for any time during 2023. We have always treated situations like this as the old contract ending and the new contract starting on 1 January, so the end and start date are the same year. Hello! I wanted to clarify my previous edits on the article, as well as say sorry for not asking for your opinion before. I genuinely wanted to help, not to start an "edit war", I promise...

I did avoid editing the "Youth career" section this time, because the articles mentioned aren't so clear about the exact periods of time spent at each club, admittedly. I thought the information I added about Emakhu's debuts was fine, though: I really just wanted to give some more details about those two matches.

Also, I think the statistics I added in the "International career" box were actually reliable: since I couldn't find any sort of database on the FAI website, I used Worldfootball.net as a reference.

I hope my intentions look clearer now. I'll make sure I let you know before I re-visit the page in the future, though, so that I can avoid making a mess like last time.

Can I ask your opinion on a footballer draft?

GiantSnowman, I know you're active in the WikiProject and I've seen you posting at AfD's that a player's not notable and to please contact you if sources are found; for example here, where I believed she was notable. I'm kind of bewildered by the change in notability requirements for sportspeople, but I'm a big softie anyway ... and I was puzzled when I tried to improve Draft:Truls Klausen (creation by a now indeffed editor who did a poor job of creating drafts based on foreign-language Wikipedias, including Norwegian, which I can read) and it was rejected anyway. Someone had noted at an AfD that there's a Norwegian media archive search, so post-rejection I looked there for coverage during his playing and coaching career (this is the resulting edit since the rejection). Can I ask you to check it and see whether he just doesn't meet the new standards? He never played internationally, and I may be barking up the wrong tree because of my inclusionist tendencies. Thanks for looking, both! That and the other directory site are being used for his full name and date of birth; I didn't realise there was a better alternative, worldfootball.net, here it is. I've gone through the sources and will be adding a rundown of them to the article talk page rather than here. Two are indeed paywalled and Wayback has captured only the blanked-out version in both cases. I can sometimes see these things using Firefox's print view option or whatever it's officially called, but I can now only see the first paragraph of one and the first line of another. Pity. The source for the year of his marriage and the children is a weak one, a blog interview with his wife; I haven't been able to find a better one at the news archive, so some of that (year, full number of children) may need to be omitted. But that was intended to fill out his bio, rather than as an indicator of notability. (In the archive search, he is mentioned/pictured a couple of times in local news articles about her dance school; I couldn't find wedding coverage.) I was unable to document the 2 Oslo teams he played for, though I suspect a more expert search of the news archive wopuld shake those loose. Initially, I was concerned that he might be a BLP1E because of the May 1995 event; there is indeed a lot of press coverage of that, I intend to add an additional article from a couple of days later, but I avoided having too much about that. But I found multiple articles all about Klausen himself. So I'll also add links to the newspapers I'm citing, and as I say, I'll discuss the refs on talk. (The Norwegian article is under-referenced.) Yes, that was why I was confused; the version that was most recently rejected already had two long articles all about him, plus several articles about the collision on the sidelines, and I'd tried to make it acceptable as a biography. Anyway, maybe this will help to either determine that notability is demonstrated or explain how he fails to meet the new standard. Personally I'd say it's not the number of caps, it's the years that matter. Having a stats table saying '1935 1 cap' is pointless when the infobox says 1 cap in 1935. Why have you written sigh - I take great exception to sarcasm and rudeness and you have fallen incredibly short of the basic standards of polite discourse. It is incredibly confusing being told of different rules all the time and varying subjective measures. Yesterday I was told and I quote “ independent, reliable, secondary sources to pass WP:GNG. It should have at least 3 of those” - For Mellon we have bbc sport, Lancs live, and Lancaster guardian. I may be many things but I can count to three. I do not care if the page for Mr Mellon is on the main space or the draft pages until you deem it acceptable, but I will expect an apology for your rude tone and attitude or else i will take my complaint over your interactions with good faith users further. Does this discussion reach a consensus? or still under discussion?

In my opinion, this issue is very important and I hope that we will reach a reasonable agreement.

  • European Professional football League season system: 2022-23 season, 2023-24 season
  • Some professional football League season system including MLS, South Korean K League, Japanese J.League, Chinese Super League: 2023 season, 2024 season

I think it is important to draw a clear line between two season system and one season system.

Current football player infobox in Gareth Bale cause misunderstanding to readers.

Gareth Bale played for LA FC both in 2022 season and 2023 season for 2 years and MLS season is ongoing in January 2023 like European Football League.

If we fill out the infobox like Gareth Bale infobox, many transfers or retirements of MLS players, K League players, J.League players, Chinese Super League players in January and February cause same misunderstanding.

You may remember on Talk:Tom Holland (English footballer) that you supported my nomination to move from YOB to nationality disambiguation because there is also a Tom Holland (Australian footballer). I have however noticed a Tom Holland (footballer, born 1997) from the Tom Holland (disambiguation) page so what I think should happen is to return the English footballer one back to Tom Holland (footballer, born 1902) to solve the naming consistency problem in line with your suggestion on Talk:George Hall (footballer, born 2004). Can't move it by myself, probably needs an administrator to do it so I have done so on the technical requests page by following the instructions properly. I seems to recall once that another "normal" Wikipedia editor was unable to move a page back to it's normal title probably because of the same reason I was reading about a page name already existing. It might also have happened when the same editor was trying to move Jota (footballer, born 1996) back to Diogo Jota as seen on Talk:Jota (Spanish footballer) but only that person knows, not us.

Hi @GiantSnowman:, I've just seen your comment on the revert regarding John McInally (footballer, born 1915). "are you joking?!" – no, I'm really not, and I think your tone could be better. In fact, I carefully studied the source before placing it on the page. The Celtic Wiki is not a Wiki "as we know it", i.e. it is not open ended and its editors are instead restricted to a select number of people who are approved to contribute via the admins, which means it's not much different from a standard football stats website. However, as you're unhappy with the source I'll compromise with simply marking the subject as deceased. Hugh Doherty (1921–2014) and Peter Goldie (b. 1934) have both been identified within the last decade as Celtic's oldest living players, and as such the subject is deceased as he was born in May 1915. I will instead state this in the article, and hope you're happy with it. Sadly, the Scottish birth and death records aren't much good in this instance as there are multiple people of the same name, thus it cannot be determined with absolute certainty which one is him. Curious why you think that sentence is UNDUE--it seems to be a fair summation of the sources, which are numerous enough to justify inclusion in the lead. Not to mention that by moving that line down, the Style of play section reads terribly now ("...he is regarded as one of the best full-backs in world football. Alexander-Arnold is widely regarded as one of the best attacking full-backs in world football..."). Hi GiantSnowman, Re your message to me, equally respectfully, you have not explained why you have reinstated information about his age that is not supported by the sources.

I didn't intentionally add any of those erroneous links directly (I accept they happened due to my reversion of your changes but they were already there before my initials edits). I feel the changes I made yesterday were good and justified and provided a better article than what was there before and what you have reverted it to. The article had a better logical structure, the 2006 vote had its own section which, given its importance in his career, was justified, and I removed confusion about this age - stated as 86 or 87, when the info box gave his precise dates of birth and death and both sources clearly said was 86, so there was no need for the confusion or for it to be replaced. Also, the reference to him being a 'flying Scotsman' added nothing to the article and was out of place/irrelevant to the section it was in. You clearly have absolutely no idea about teaching or coaching methods.
1) I organised it chronologically, you just reverted it and then took what I did and made it your own edit.
2) You simply reverted all my edits more than once
3) You repeatedly undid edits of mine that were perfectly good and improved the article
4) You leave unhelpful, negative comments like "Why are are you adding 'fact' tag to sourced content?" when that was a perfectly reasonable thing to do given that the sourced content made no mention of what it was supposed to be supporting.
A HELPFUL person would have said something like "You clearly want to improve this article, thank you - however, some of these changes could be done differently" or "have you considered doing it this way?" or "here's another/better way to do it". Instead, you chose a negative, unconstructive approach of simple reversion guaranteed to get people's backs up and then just undid every positive change. Before 'helping' someone again, I suggest you het some help in how to do it, because your arrogant approach and attitude is having the completely opposite effect. I wanted to discuss your recent revert of my edit of Billy Forbes. Is your stance that we should not include "non-FIFA" caps and appearances? I (although I love NFT) think that NFT's arbitrary use of "FIFA" and "Non-FIFA" designations is often flawed, but even more so in the case of this player. Forbes has a WCQ goal and nine CNL goals and yet his "official" goal count is four? The England stats were a mistake, which I corrected immediately after. If you compare your last version to my last version there are only a few additions to what I missed as I have not done that type of edit before.
You would do better to provide constructive criticism and encouragement when someone tries to update the page rather than calling it 'nonsense' and accusing them of vandalism, when this is clearly not the case.

The first time I missed the last update, which I did not miss this time. I missed a few other things as it was only the second time. Wikipedia is supposed to be collaborative. All you had to do was add the missing bits and then I could see. There was no need to revert or make accusations.

The only discussion so far on the talk page above has been opened for three weeks. Based on the discussion that I have read just now which obviously has agreement from you and Ampimd should, by theory, be the initial creator of the article, I'd say it shouldn't be too long to merge both page histories and some of the content together.

I was actually expecting the page move from draft to mainspace at various points last year instead of what actually happen. I'm definitely aware you have many potential articles currently in your user space and other people probably aren't aware of that. I believe this is a good-faith attempt to create an article by a new user, but it's completely unsourced (at least at the moment) and doesn't look at if it would meet WP:GNG. The parent club appears to be Luton Town F.C.; so, maybe at information about its U18 team could or should be added there. Creation of Arat Hosseini

Hey GS, hope you're enjoying your holiday. Just a quick one that I was looking for your opinion on. Arat Hosseini is only nine, but (in my opinion) has garnered significant coverage throughout his career so far. I note that the page was deleted in June 2020, and set so that only administrators can create it, but I see similarities between Hosseini and Sonny Pike, in that they are both footballers whose youth careers have been heavily profiled. If Hosseini goes on to have an actual career in football, then he'll most likely garner standard coverage, but if he does drop out of football, then it'll be another case like Pike, where more articles will surface about "wasted potential", etc.

Tom Williams

Hi @GiantSnowman, Since Tom Williams made his last (competitive) appearance for Hashtag United in February 2020, yet he stayed on as a coach through at least the pre-season of the 2021/22 season, and he hasn't played for any other team since then, and at the grand age of 42, I had presumed that he had retired, even though I don't believe that he had announced anywhere that he retired. I also can't find any source that announced his retirement. I am sure that he is not a coach at Hashtag United now, as I can't find any mention of him from after 2021, and he does not feature on the staff page of their website. In May 2022 Williams tweeted a shrugging emoji in response to someone saying that 'he may have retired', so he might not have done, but I believe that that might have been in jest. I am not sure why you have removed Williams' league statistics from his infobox, as there is quite a fair amount of coverage of each Hashtag United game and therefore his 25 appearances and 3 goals are easily verifiable. I also apologise for writing that he is English in his introduction, that was an obvious mistake on my behalf. As it says on my user page, 'feel free to call me out on anything I have done/got wrong', I thank you for reverting my edit, as I made mistakes that I should not have made, you make Wikipedia a better place! Either the list is outdated for omitting women's professionalization, or it shouldn't list women's association football for only Denmark. What's the goal? Mariam-uz-Zamani name

Hi there, I see you have removed Wali Nimat from the name text on the Mariam-uz-Zamani page. Mariam Zamani wasn't her name, it was her imperial title, her name was Wali Nimat Begum given to her by her husband post-marriage. Her husband, Akbar too held the title of Khadija-ul-Zaman but that didn't become his name. Women of his seraglio were always referred to by some epithet or place of their birth and highest ranking women, like Akbar's mother and his chief consort were referred to by their titles like Mariam Makani and Mariam Zamani. In case the namespace is meant to write just the short name, it seems more sound to mention Wali Nimat Begum than Mariam Zamani. Her name can be confirmed from her edict which you can find in the Tirmizi book or Khulasat-ut-Tawarikh.

Dani Ceballos controversy section removed by random ip

Hello GS. I noticed that an IP removed the controversy section from the Dani Ceballos article sometime in March, even though the incidents are properly sourced. Many athletes have controversy sections, and I don't understand why Dani's should suddenly be removed. If it's indeed an incorrect removal, could you restore the section somehow... that is, if you have time to do so of course. Speun (talk) 15:36, 29 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
