A well-deserved barnstar

The Special Barnstar
On behalf of me, and everyone at WikiProject Gastropods, for your outstanding CSVLoader, and excellent support thereof, we gratefully present to you this spanking barnstar. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:14, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

CSVLoader history

Just out of curiosity, when was it first available for use? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:27, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

String length/complexity

Just wondering how long the strings can be. Can I circumvent problems explained in the Notes here by producing something like this:

##binominal##;##auth##;##genusabbrev##;##name##;##locality##
Julia exquisita;Gould, 1862;J;exquisita;The type locality for this species is Australia
Julia japonica;Kuroda & Habe, 1951;J;japonica;The type locality for this species is Japan

Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:16, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

I tried this line in a datafile:

Julia mishimaensis;Kawaguti & Yamasu, 1982;J;mishimaensis;The type locality for this species is Canada.

AWB's bottom-left box display showed two lines of text, one of which was the word Canada. I didn't try to generate the article after that.

Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:45, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm still hunting for a way around the "references as a field" problem. I think we can assume that a properly formatted ref full of square brackets, etc., will cause problems, but what about a normal web address? Do you think those would work 100% of the time? Also, is there some nifty way to "surround" offending characters in a "nowiki" kind of way? And what about substituting offending characters with some safe but unique character or group of numbers, with a search and replace to reinstate them via AWB during creation, or afterwards? Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:21, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

A link to CSVLoader

Would you like me to add a link to CSVLoader in the edit summary of newly created articles? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 07:17, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

WoRMS reference template

I saw your sample. It looks fantastic. Just so that I'm clear, we can, by adding the template, automatically make a reference to the appropriate WoRMS page for each new Conus article. Is that right?

You wrote on my talk page that you made two template pages. Only one seems to exist.

You wrote that you would bring this to the attention of everyone on the Project Gastropod talk page. I don't see it there. Cheers, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:09, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Non-article Assam pages, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Non-article Assam pages has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Non-article Assam pages, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Speedy deletion of Vadakkanandal

A tag has been placed on Vadakkanandal, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Bihco (talk) 19:00, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Lilong (Thoubal)

A tag has been placed on Lilong (Thoubal) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Conus jaspideus, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Conus algoensis. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 16:57, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

parameter needs-photo

Hello, there can used also parameter needs-photo in WikiProject Gastropods template (in further articles)

--Snek01 (talk) 17:15, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Okay, I will do that for any new articles that I create. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 17:34, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Something needs changing on many of the stubs

Oooops, I am sorry, I see one more thing that I will have to ask you to use AWB to fix. In all of the species articles for species within the family Conidae, including the Conus set as well as the new Bela stubs and any other stubs in the Conidae that the bot has made so far, the intro sentence currently says [my emphasis],

"a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Conidae, the cone snails, cone shells or cones."

This is actually an out-of-date statement. It needs to say

"a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Conidae, the cone snails and their allies."

Once again, I apologize, I believe that was my fault. Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 12:28, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Doing... No need to apologize. Please feel free to ask for changes like these. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:23, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Award

The Nudibranch of Niceness
For your excellent work on the Conus project, I hereby present to you this much-coveted award. Without fear of hyperbole, this is the single greatest award in the history of the known universe. So, of course, in the field of gastropods, it is a huge deal, and much talked-about. It is the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for malacology. Previous winners of this award include JoJan, Snek01, and Invertzoo, all of whom attained rock star status that nearly destroyed them. As word of this will hit the newspapers within a few days, I suggest getting out of town to avoid the media frenzy. -- Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:43, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
You are one of us now -- part of the mysterious yet powerful "Gastropod Cabal". Thursdays at Chuck E. Cheese. New guy takes minutes and picks up the tab. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:56, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

One thing needs tweaking

Hi Ganesh, I see that in the Strictispira articles it says:

"A small species of sea snail"

instead of

"a species of small sea snail"

You may want to check the other genera and other similar families.

Thanks so much for all your work,

Invertzoo (talk) 18:35, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Done Pseudomelatomidae and Strictispiridae were affected. I have fixed all of them. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 12:31, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Barnstar

A Barnstar!
A Gastropod Barnstar

This beautiful Gastropod Barnstar is awarded to you Ganeshk, in recognition of all the dedicated work you have put into creating thousands of new stubs for WikiProject Gastropods, using Ganeshbot. Thank you for being so kind and generous. The snails and slugs are applauding. This is hard for them to do as they don't have hands, and also their bodies are rather soft. However some of them are trying to bang their opercula on their shells in order to make a clapping sound! Invertzoo (talk) 18:46, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Genera stubs

HI again Ganesh, I am going to be away for 3 weeks and not doing much at all online while I am gone, so I just wanted to say something now. See how things go, but if you get to a point where you want a change from making species stubs, consider asking Snek01 about making genus stubs for all of the genera that you have already made species stubs for.

A genus stub is really very easy to make by cutting down a species stub, and maybe you could even get the bot to write a species list within each genus article based on the species stubs you have already made. Anyway, you can ask Snek about it and how to do it, but it would be really nice to have, because it would plug all of those species articles into the "Tree of Life" structure, so that people can navigate up or down through the whole structure.

Anyway, I will be around for a couple more days still, but I may be a bit busy a lot of the time. Best wishes and thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 22:33, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Trochoidea

Hi. Your bot has created a bunch of stubs that link to Trochoidea. Trochoidea links to a disambiguation page because there is both a superfamily (Trochoidea (superfamily) and a genus (Trochoidea (genus)). Is there anyway you could program your bot to link to the correct taxon to lighten the burden of disambiguating those links manually? I'm manually fixing the links now. Thanks. --JamesAM (talk) 03:22, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

I award this Barnstar to Ganeshk for all the work he is putting into getting our six hundred brand new Conus stubs up and running! You are very generous and a good Wikipedian. Invertzoo (talk) 19:32, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
I would also like to thank you sincerely, Ganesh. Projects like ours, which are beginning to emerge, really need this kind of help. Attitudes like yours make our days brighter around here! My very best wishes --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 04:35, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
Congratulations! The article Conus ebraeus, that you have started, appeared on Portal:Gastropods. --Snek01 (talk) 00:07, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks Daniel and Michal. Your help with the bot approval process is greatly appreciated. I am glad the stubs are done. The long wait is over. :) Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:49, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
It is great to have them up. I was also wondering if there is an automated process that would allow us to add templates for WikiProject Gastropods onto all of the talk pages of the new articles? (A very few have been added by hand, but most are untagged.) Many thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 12:22, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
Done. I have tagged 470 talk pages with the project banner. I used AWB for the automation. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 13:30, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
Wow, fantastic! Thanks so much Ganesh! That was fast! Can we also use AWB to add the missing info... <br/>clade Hypsogastropoda ...to all of the Conus taxoboxes? A few of them have it already, but very few. Invertzoo (talk) 14:08, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
Yes...it can be done.  Doing.... Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 14:24, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
You are so very kind, Ganesh, you are truly a manifestation of "The Remover of Obstacles"! I guess I can't use AWB, even if I wanted to learn how, because I am on a Mac. Invertzoo (talk) 14:58, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
Done. I have added the missing clade to all Conus species that matched. That's right, AWB needs Windows. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 16:09, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
Fantastic, thank you so much! Invertzoo (talk) 13:08, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
I too would want to say a massive thanks for helping out creating taxonomic related articles! Maybe when you are done with all the gastropod species you can take a go at a few more somewhere under the WP:Tree of life project (I am not sure if that would require additional approval from the bot community but the species will have a source so maybe they can be created in the same way?). Cheers!Calaka (talk) 09:21, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks Calaka. I download the data from WoRMS. So the bot is limited to creating marine species. Once it is done with Gastropods, I can take a stab at the Marine Tree of Life. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:13, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Hey no worries. Wow, you downloaded the data from the Worms registry? Would that mean you intend on making an article for every item on their list (assuming it is not a synonym?) That would be incredible/excellent (as there is well over 200,000 names on that list). The good thing about the data is that it is not just one sentence, but it contains a taxobox/ref/cat etc. and that if more info was provided by the source more could be added (as I have seen in some of the articles you created). If I was to give you other websites with species lists/data, would you consider giving them a go? Again this will be after you are well and truly done with the Worms database which I am not sure how long it would take? Understandably you do not want to do all 200,000 in one sitting but in increments (since you did all the Conus species first etc.).Calaka (talk) 08:48, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
I use web services to download the WoRMS data. So, yes, technically it should be possible to make an article for every item on their list (that has an accepted status). The bot uses CSVLoader plugin that can use any CSV data file (from WoRMS or any other source) to create articles. The important thing is to make sure the bot has some kind of project supervision, people knowledgeable with the species. Marine taxonomy is complicated and prone to errors. With Gastropods, Michal helps me understand where a particular family belongs before I let the bot do anything. We are working on one family at a time so that if we do make any errors, it should be easy to fix. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:04, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Ah yes good point, if you do the articles via a bot, to always have a wikiproject to back you up as you clearly do with the gastropod articles. All the best with the marine articles. Looking forward to see them all complete! Kind regards.Calaka (talk) 07:46, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Oh and PS:In addition to species will the bot be creating additional taxonomic rankings (genus, families etc. etc.) that are not covered on Wikipedia?Calaka (talk) 08:17, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks Calaka. I have been thinking on how to go about creating missing Genus stubs. It is tricky, have to get the CSVLoader to make lists (of species) on genus stubs (which it currently does not do). Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 13:21, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Excellent work with the new stubs. It is nice to actually see a bot running creating articles for once. In my view a bot should be generating content in this way as it makes starter articles consistent. What happened to your Indian village bot? I thought you planned on creating 638,000 articles for Indian settlements? Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:09, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Trochoidea Disambiguation

Your bot, Ganeshbot, is creating a lot of articles with just Trochoidea listed as the superfamily in the infobox. Unfortunately, this is resulting in links to a Disambiguation page. Is there any way to get the bot to go through and update the superfamily to be Trochoidea (superfamily)?

I'm sure that myself or someone else who works on DAB pages will get them fixed eventually, but having the bot go through them would make things easier.

Any help you can offer is appreciated.

File settings, csv file and diff (The spam filter doesn't trust me :-) There are only test changes, becouse I was first used CSVLoader to update information from data base. Maybe, I make terrible mistake in settings, and I don't know about other functions. Karol007 (talk) 02:26, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much. Yesterday, I was idea, that I design graphically new bookmark in the settings and I can encourage you to expand the functions:-) Normally when I would like improve any parameters (only technic corrects), for the example, I was used regular expresions "\|(\ )*name of parameter(\ *)\=(\ *)(\-*)([0-9]*)\.([0-9]*)" and in the end work "|$1name of parameter$2=$3$4$5,$6", but this method completly can't use data from external data base. I was ticked "find and repleace" but I don't know, how can I change of value of exist (or don't exist) parameter in infoboks. Karol007 (talk) 19:06, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

I don't saw images, thx! It works, but the value in box it was change from for example "##H##" to value of parameter from file. It is very strange and I don't know how can I explain you. This value isn't nowhere in file with data (I was deleated it, when I looking of mistake). In the file, this value was exist in the previous rekord before redirect, but I think it isn't source of the problem. I was looking for in settings, but i don't find. I restart AWB, but it was actualisation and I have a problem with start again, and I can't check in new, blank setting file. Tomorrow I will check again this problem. Now, I go sleep, becouse it is 2:30 in night:) PS. I checking my talk on enWiki at 2-3 hours, when I working in Wikipedia. Karol007 (talk) 00:41, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
They are my actually settings and data test file: pl:Wikipedysta:Karol007/CSVLoader. Karol007 (talk) 21:03, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Thank you very much. All it works:) Best wishes, Karol007 (talk) 03:52, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

I haven't slept that night:) I was learned regular expressions in the last year, so I should deal with it:) I using regex tester ad-don to Firefox, and I has always check in AWB, becouse regex must be safety to every articles. Karol007 (talk) 04:14, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
