On a number of occasions now I've noticed you've made a whole series of benificial but tedious improvements to various currency articles. These are mostly the type of improvements that are behind the scene's (formatting, wikifying, etc.) and thus might go unrecognized, so I wanted to take a moment to thank you and let you know it's appreciated. Just wanted to say a massive thanks for your work on the Election results template. Not only is it a big help for getting some consistency in presentation, but the automatic totalling and percentage calculation has helped identify several errors in the tables (both from editors mistranscribing numbers from sources, and mistakes in the sources themselves) by comparing the automatically-calculated totals/percentages with those given in the original tables/sources. Nomination for deletion of Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary[edit]

From my talk page back in september.

Bugger bugger bugger, I saw a map in the transport museum in budapest we went the other week and it had the lat and long but in pretty much a mercator projection. My missus was more interested with the toy trains so I didn't get a chance to take the measures off it. If it's wrong (as it is) it should be deleted but I am still trying to get the measures right. The thing is it's specifically Kingdom of Hungary, but the more atlases (atli? :) I look at the more different lats and longs I get. And anything one does on Hungarian articles is rather contentious, so it is probably really better deleted. Because people whose great grandfathers were part of the Kingdom of Hungary will say no that's Croatia or Slovakia or Slovenia or Yugoslavia or Jugoslavia or The People's Republic of East Kebab. Since Hungarian politics is very contentious and goes on racist grounds in far more than would be allowed in where I come from, this is better off deleted. (Hint: say Treaty of Trianon to a Hungarian and await results.) Si Trew (talk) 09:36, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hungary ethic groups.jpg
I never did get round to this. I took the coords off of file at right, which is very high quality but seems to have an odd idea of where 0 longitude is (it suggests it is east of Paris, but that didn't seem to work). As you suggested, I tried to take well-known points at the edges of the map: Fiume, for example, at south-west. I took very good readings after printing out this map at A0 size and using ruler and compass, my trig is quite good, but I could never get it to fit. Si Trew (talk) 06:02, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
.Oh, Template:Location_map_Kingdom_of_Hungary/test might help you. You see, Fiume's in the right place but Budapest is a bit too far left and the rest are well out. Si Trew (talk) 06:09, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That map uses the Paris meridian. It's not a Mercator projection, the lines of latitude aren't quite parallel. Maproom (talk) 20:09, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, thanks for the tip. I have written code for generating coefficients for nonlinear projections if I know the functional form. but, the code requires at least as many reference points as there are coefficients. basically a nonlinear least-squares algorithm. the problem here is that other than the reference markings on the side of the map, it's tough to get reference points in the middle. Frietjes (talk) 21:18, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Si Trew, should we just give up on Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary and have it deleted? Frietjes (talk) 21:20, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
How many do you need in the middle? You get get a reference point near each corner by specifying where the nearest line of (Paris) longitude would cross the nearest line of latitude, and use towns like Szolnok (which Google Earth says is 47°10'N 20°11'E Greenwich) in the middle. Maproom (talk) 21:37, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, now that I look at it again, I think we have enough with the two interior intersection points and the points along the edges. the original question was about the image in Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary which is less clear. for File:Hungary-ethnic_groups.jpg, I think we can make a working location map. thank you again. Frietjes (talk) 21:42, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just a thought, maybe not very coherent at this time of night. Using an ethnographic map as a location map may, as Si Trew pointed out, be contentious. Will it help if instead I upload to Commons this map? It uses a Ferro meridian, which is no worse than Paris, and shows enough towns such as Szolnok for central reference points. Maproom (talk) 22:02, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, that may help. let's see what Si Trew says. my main focus is turning map images into working location maps. I don't really have a strong feeling about the particular map image, so long as it is created with a well-defined projection. Frietjes (talk) 22:06, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just asking out of curiosity – how do you "turn a map image into a location map"? Do you warp it into the Mercator projection that the template requires? Or do you supply the template with a transform function? Maproom (talk) 07:24, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, supply the transformation function. see, for example, module:Location map/data/Canada. if I know the functional form and a sufficient number of reference points, I can numerically solve for the coefficients. Frietjes (talk) 12:40, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. It's reassuring to see that things are done in such a sensible and comprehensible way. Incidentally – if you ever find a map image at http://maproom.org/ that you could use in Wikipedia, please let me know and I'll put it on Commons. Maproom (talk) 09:46, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pinging me in on this. I know it was a long time ago. User:Maproom, yes I did guess it was the Paris Meridian all that time ago, but that didn't seem quite to fit either. Since then I took something and with Inkscape made a four-colour map (five if you include Lake Balaton as a fifth colour, blue, but could have been made a fourth colour as those that surround it are all in three other colours, it is just more pleasant to have it in blue but not mathematically necessary) and split out all the layers and borders and so on into separate layers on the SVG. I seem to recall I called it Template:Location Map Hungary2 or something – and I emphasise this is not the Kingdom of Hungary but the modern-day Hungary. All I had left to do was get the text labelling right. Searching for "a new look for an old map" was something roughly want some commenter said, may well have been User:Frietjes here but may not have been (a long time ago, just going from memory: and those exact words are what was printed on the front of the first H C Beck fold-up London Underground Diagram (often called "Map"; Beck himself never called it a map: I have good references for this from publications of the London Transport Museum in woodware) of 1933, so I am probably confusing those words with the same sentiment expressed. This is all such a long time ago, I give as hints for those who can search better than I.
On the plus side, by pure coincidence (these are not common around here in Budapest) my local pub has a nice 1898ish German (I think) map of Austria-Hungary; certainly pre-Treaty of Trianon. This is a five or six colour map and I am pretty sure it is in German but I am going from memory, I don't think it's in Hungarian. It would be about 40 by 25 inches (1,020 mm × 640 mm) and I daresay somehow I could get it scanned in, in one of the largescale printers in the town (who I happen to be also on good terms with, for various other reasons) or just take four A3 scans and stitch them with photoshop, assuming that my scanner doesn't distort too much. I am on good terms with the landlord as I have given him my British registration plates and various other British pub memorablia, it is that kind of pub, very much a "local", so I can ask to borrow the map (it's framed) or just go in on a quiet afternoon with a straightedge etc and try to get some measures off that. I think it is not the same as the image is here, though quite similar. As a start shall I get the maker etc, would that help at all, before I do the trig etc off it? I have a very good straightedge and fifty quids worth of setsquare adjustable protractor that I use for technical drawing on my A0 drawing board, it's about 25 inches (640 mm) long on its hypotenuese, which should be enough to measure angles and distances with some kinda veracity, I am not sure of the projection without looking again. Is it worth me taking a look and reporting back, probably will be about UTC+2 Friday tomorrow, else Monday? If you give me some nice trig points "in the middle" I will do my best to give you the readings off of them. These won't be 100% accuracy but will be within a second of arc or two through the distortion of the glass in the frame, I would imagine. Si Trew (talk) 16:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I understand if it is WP:COPYVIO etc but if I check the maker first, it may very well turn out not to be because of the date and also various other "things that have happened since", could well be PD or fair use. I think I check the maker first, that is clear enough in top right corner but don't remember offhand. Would that be of any use, at least to confirm or deny if it's the same as this one? It reminded me of this one, when I first saw it, but I think it is different but of about the same time. Si Trew (talk) 16:40, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
File:Hungary_location_map.svg is the one I made the four-colour svg version of. It just needs tidying on the text labels layer if I remember right, I can't remember its name. The computer it was on is long gone. File:Hungary location map2.svg? Something like that. We have File:Hungary location map-2.jpg on Commons, but that's not it, cos it's not four-colour and has labels in Cyrillic, is a jpg not an svg. Perhaps unfortunately it got deleted as unused. I'd need to ask an admin to dredge from about 2009 onwards. Users working on it would have been mostly me and perhaps occasionally the missus, no longer editing at Wikipedia for many a year due to very harsh and undeserved comments after excellent translations of English articles about the Tudors into HU:WP (something she is an expert in, more than I know and I'm bloody English): Her username was/is User:Monkap. Si Trew (talk) 16:51, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
OK, the map you included wrongfooted me, this is exactly the map that is nominated (duh!) I was looking at the map you included on the right. No, don't give up on it, I'll try to fix it. It is nearly OK, all the coords and borders and counties etc are done on separate labels and I think it is much better than the boring brown map transcluded via Infobox Hungarian settlement. We just need to fix the edges and fix the text-label layer for some reason the font doesn't scale properly, I never did work out why, I shall try again. One reason to separate into different layers in a good GIS fashion is so that with a flick of the wrist one can turn off all the labels, turn off e.g. the county borders, make all the counties brown and just fill one particular county in a different colour (for Hungarian county articles) etc etc etc. I hand-edited the XML for the SVG to make it all nice, it's much much nicer than its predecessor for putting into a GIS etc because each county edge and county border and county name etc is labeleed in a very consistent fashion. The underlying SVG is File:Kingdom_of_Hungary_counties-2.svg. The polygons for the borders go actually in a kinda "cogwheel" order so that some going anticlockwise have their boundaries against the others going clockwise, rather in a toothed gearwheel manner, but that was just my pedantry; each county actually has its own borders as it did on the original, but on the original the borders for e.g Budapest to Pest County were a bit different from the borders of Pest County to Budapest, i.e. there was a gap or overlap, which now there is not in "my" version, they have all the coordinates bang on, as I did them all in hand in the XML not with some "snap it roughly to where it looks right" tool. All the bordering points have the same coords but the opposite directions (clockwise or widdershins) which helps the SVG polygon fill get it right without overlap or gap.
I think we should keep it and try to fix the labels and the "fix" coordinates for it. I suppose this was a labour of love but I think it does make it better than what is used in the infobox, it scales except for the text labels and the old one has errors in the border coords that leave gaps or overlaps, it just doesn't seem so at the scale used in infoboxes, as the rendering of the borders and the pushpins for the places are far larger than the errors, at even a large-screen resolution scale. If you blow it up and print it onto A0 (paper size) is is noticeable. Si Trew (talk) 17:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The text labels are fine on my I think 1972 across screen in full view. When I made this I think I had a 1024x768 screen. It's when the labels are all squished they don't scale down properly, and get all scrunched up, I have never quite worked out why. There is a style that governs it, and I tried all sorts of things but none worked. Si Trew (talk) 21:04, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Damallsvenskan seasons article changes[edit]

What was going on and what did you do on 2015 Damallsvenskan? I do not recall that the older revisions were such a mess with the league table and broken (?) templates.

And why did you remove the Football in Sweden template on all articles?

Would be nice if you left a little edit summary ;) Thank you for your hard work. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 13:29, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your reply! I see. I'm not very initiated in the inner workings and developments of Wikipedia's technicalities, but from what I can gather, in layman's terms, an old sports table system was replaced with a new one. And when the old templates were deleted, the table vanished from the article and left lots of dead code in it.
You, on the other hand, seem very initiated in the matter, and as you also touched on 2020 Damallsvenskan I will take the opportunity to explain myself. I tried to combine all elements of a WDL table into one, using sports rbr table (I don't know how to link to it or even find it anymore), but it clearly isn't designed for that, so I had to haxx it together. I thought we could try that and see what people think, and if people are positive, some(one) could write some proper code for it. I forgot to mention it in the edit summary.
Why did you change the "style" parameter on the standings table from football to WDL? Is that what it's called now? It's a standings table, not a WDL table, very unintuitive and confusing.
I have a large draft on another computer with lots of pre-season info going into the overview section. New dates have recently been set. It will start at the end of June, so I will try to get it up by then. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 23:50, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Mango från yttre rymden, the style template is Module:Sports table/WDL where WDL = "win draw loss" since not all football seasons have draws. there is also Module:Sports table/WL for football seasons without draws. if there is a problem with Module:Sports rbr table, let me know and I can work on it, but so far it seems to be working for 99.9% of all football articles which have round-by-round results tables. Frietjes (talk) 22:32, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I see now about the style parameter.
I was using this example https://wiki.alquds.edu/?query=Module:Sports_rbr_table#Example_3:_Team_combined_table but with all teams in the division in one single table, not just one team with the team name put in the table title like the example shows. The module clearly isn't really made for what I was doing in 2020 Damallsvenskan. It works, but I kinda had to duct tape it together with lots of label rows with a new number for each row, making it difficult to keep track of what value is for what team. Would be much easier if all values regarding one team had the same number. Like "Ground1" and "Position1" perhaps. Do you see what I'm going for? Could it be modified into what I would like to have it, or something like it? If you are a coder I'm sure you can come up with a good solution, but I'm not sure I have made myself apprehensible. The whole concept is quite ambitious from a user and article standpoint, but I thought it could be tried at least. Or do you think it's just stupid perhaps? --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 14:28, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
we were working on something related here, where one could put the position/ground/result in one table and then select which to show. here, it sounds like you want to have all three show at the same time for all teams? I had stopped working on it because I thought no one was seriously interested. but, I could work on it some more if you are interested. Frietjes (talk) 14:34, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"here, it sounds like you want to have all three show at the same time for all teams?" Exactly. It's just an idea on my end, I don't know if there's any interest. I was thinking that I would do it on 2020 Damallsvenskan either way, as a proof on concept, and get peoples opinion, and if people liked it, it could be pitched to someone working on that stuff (like you? :) ) to implement functions for it in the module properly. I could start with your opinion. Since you've already thought about it and perhaps worked a little bit on it, then I guess I'm not the only one thinking along those lines ;) The thing you discussed in "Consistent data" looks really cool, but that is more about logistics, having one template on multiple articles and thus lessen editing burden, as I understood it. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 20:20, 26 June 2020 (UTC) I also edited my previous message to make it more clear.[reply]

Can you help me merge and into Module:Team bracket? Thanks,Hhkohh (talk) 16:24, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hhkohh, so you need |RD1-2= for a round label in the middle? possible, but will take some time to implement (on top of the current group label). Frietjes (talk) 17:34, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
yeah Hhkohh (talk) 22:33, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have any idea what is going on there? I had only intended to change the flags because the incorrect ones were being used, but it looks like a whole bunch of other changes were made. I've noticed you reverting that for other tables in my watchlist, were you able to find the issue? I'd be happy to help if you need anything. Jay eyem (talk) 00:43, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Jay eyem, the |template_name= parameter is no longer supported. other than that, I have no comments on the changes made to that template. Frietjes (talk) 00:44, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop messing up tables[edit]

You've gone through many tables and deleted the spacings that people have explicitly maintained for readability. Please revert your changes. Ergzay (talk) 14:39, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There are many spaceflight articles with manually formatted tables to make editing of the wikitext easier and make the wikitext parsing more readable, notably with newlines before table headings. Please do not auto format anything under Wikipedia:WikiProject Spaceflight. I'm sure other people have also done this and your autoformatting breaks people's manual or automatic formatting. Ergzay (talk) 15:14, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Also, how did you break Wikipedia to prevent reverts? When I tried to undo your edits it said that "The edit could not be undone because it does not exist or was deleted." Please don't do that. Ergzay (talk) 15:17, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Biography template using bare URL in website parameter[edit]

Hi @Frietjes. Is this category you created still needed: Category:Biography template using bare URL in website parameter? I do not quite follow or understand all of the discussion in the Infobox writer talk page archives at [39] where this category was first discussed. If you think there is still a need for the category (and the code in Infobox writer that populates it), I am wondering if we could add a "preview" warning so that editors will get a warning in "Show preview" mode. As it stands now, there is no message to the editor indicating any problem with a bare URL, but the page is dropped into the tracking category. Yes, the wikignomes (myself included) are monitoring that category along with many others and will "fix" the problems as they arise, but I think it would be good to help editors avoid introducing the issue in the first place. Or if this is really not an issue anymore so that the category can go away as tracking a non-issue. What do you think? Thanks. — Archer1234 (talk) 14:45, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Archer1234, that tracking category was added after a syntax change to the infobox that stopped wrapping the bare URLs with the URL template. I am pretty sure the preferred method is to use URL for URLs in infoboxes. I don't know if gnomes like MB are using it, or if there are other infoboxes with a similar check. I am not actively monitoring it, so I don't really care if it stays or goes. in either case, it's not a serious problem having a bare URL in an infobox. although, in my opinion, it's also not a serious problem to have a bare URL for a citation, but people clean those up all the time. Frietjes (talk) 15:30, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I "fix" these. Most of the template docs say to use URL and I think it visually much cleaner to display the url without the "HTTP://". I plan to ask that this checking be added to other infoboxes in the future, if there is ever a time when all the other things in other tracking cats are fixed (assuming I am still alive). Tim Belcher Article[edit]

The edits look fine on my end. I'm not sure what it looked like for you. The section I edited still requires revision as it explicitly states that Belcher made racist comments. Which there is no confirmation of anywhere. Johnnytucf (talk) 19:21, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Johnnytucf, here is your edit: [40] which is not just changing one sentence. Frietjes (talk) 20:01, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha, I think the problem was I was attempted to revise a previous edit from years ago, and pulled the edit from a historical page, which looks like it reverted all the other sections I was not attempting to edit.
Thank you for correcting it. Johnnytucf (talk) 14:37, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can I ask for something else? REEDriler (talk) 20:04, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the color boxes here are not square when I compare it to this revision side by side. Could this be controlled any way in the template or the article? Legend inline is appropriate inside infobox right?. I'm confused here because some of the system's station articles like [41] use |inline=yes for rcb inside infoboxes, but they are not square that way. Then I used the metric from your prev archive and its seems off compared to (table cells)! I've kept the "if" order in Party legend same as the party name with color module. So maybe a Party legend package could fit there just like rcb for rail?

Firefox and Windows 10. Theres a very slight difference for the first comparison (verticle), I had to position the windows on top of each other and minimize and open it. For station article its quite clear its squashed horizontally. REEDriler (talk) 20:43, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK. For station article they're square in Edge browser. REEDriler (talk) 20:54, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
inspect element says that the span in station article is 14x16 in Firefox and probably chrome too (atleast on android). where the most page visits come from . REEDriler (talk) 21:06, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Election results module[edit]

Hello. Very sorry to bother you, but I cannot work out why I cannot get the third round heading or vote total to appear here based on my edits in sandbox. I wondered whether it was because this code was missing, but when I added it, the module faulted... I guess somewhere I have to increase the number of possible rounds, but I can't work out where. Cheers, Number 57 23:16, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Number 57, it looks like you are starting to figure it out. let me know if you need help. once you get it working, I would suggest making "has_seats" a table, along with some of the other suffixed local variables. when we first designed it, there were only one or two rounds, but now with three rounds it makes sense to start using loops, and more generic logic. Frietjes (talk) 23:49, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response – at the moment I am stuck in trying to make the third set of votes/%/seats headings appear in the second row (and also can't work out why the seats total appears for the third round, but not the votes)... Number 57 23:54, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Number 57, the code starting around line 427 is confusing. I would think you just need one case there to add the second row headings when there is more than one round. Frietjes (talk) 23:59, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There are two sets of headings called (rows 427-452 and 453-473) because in some cases there is an additional column (swing), so the first set is to create four second row columns (with swing) and the second set is to create three second row columns (without swing). Number 57 00:09, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Number 57, I see, but I would think you could stick a conditional inside of the loop to adjust if the bulk of the loop is the same. Frietjes (talk) 00:11, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Number 57, in the loop starting at line 89, you go row by row, checking the parameters, and setting the "rounds" parameter. however, it looks like there is a problem in that if the next row has fewer rounds, you can overwrite the rounds with 2 when it was set to 3 in the previous row. so, you probably want to only set it to 2, if it is less than 2? in any event, I am going to log off shortly, so I probably won't be able to help for another 18 hours. Frietjes (talk) 00:18, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have to confess I am a bit lost now... I don't understand that part of the code I'm afraid... Most of my work on that module has been learning as I go along... Number 57 00:36, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Number 57, I made the change in the part that I noticed, and it seems to be getting closer, but still quite a bit of code to review (and probably clean up at some point). Frietjes (talk) 00:41, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I've been trying to tidy it up a bit too. Number 57 00:44, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

List helper[edit]

I have been using this for a few months and if you would be willing to make any updates I have a list now of changes: 1. only work on infoboxes, as part of Indent (as a option, the way you implemented removesmalltags). 2. not clobber existing edit summary 3. include a link to MOS:NOBR in the edit summary 4. display the template parameter in the dialog box to make it easier to decide whether to accept 5. is there way to have the OK/Cancel box stay in a fixed location, like at the top?

Any of these changes would be much appreciated as always. MB 22:44, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

1. is possible, but will have to work on that, 2. done, 3. done, 4. done, 5. harder to do. Frietjes (talk) 01:54, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Frietjes

I noticed that you were active at TFD so I have a question for you. I stumbled upon Category:2020 NCAA Division I baseball standings templates and it looks like most of these templates, at least the ones I checked, indicate that no games were played in these college leagues during 2020 likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So, should we have templates that indicate 0 games were played? Are they serving any purpose? I know little about templates and since I see you have experience nominating templates for deletion discussions, I'm hoping you can give me your opinion. Thanks! Liz Read! Hi,

I've been scratching my head for 30 minutes trying to figure out how my second set of edits to this article happened. I made two edits and I gladly claim the first set, but I have no idea how the second set happened or any recollection of it. I thank you for reversion because without it, information would have been lost. (I don't think I was hacked, there don't seem to be any other changes or other affects on my computer, and I did it at work, where we have excellent security against hacking.) I will go back and redo the first edit, which corrected a reference and typos. At least I can add a reference where one was needed.

I'm still wondering what happened and send you my apologies for making you spend time undoing my edit.

Template coding request[edit]

Hi! I was wondering if you could please add the parameters of "|prev_year=" and "|next_year=" into ?

A good template example is Infobox NCAA team season, which has those parameters.

I noticed that 2020 Ivy League men's basketball tournament would need to jump to 2022 Ivy League men's basketball tournament (and vice versa) since 2021 there was no tourney held, but there's currently no way to streamline the links via infobox. SportsGuy789 (talk) 15:24, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like those parameters already exist but are not documented. They appear to be called |Different Next= and |Different Previous=. You can see one of the parameters in use at 2020 Ivy League men's basketball tournament. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:53, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I need help again![edit]

Hello Frietjes, I was wondering if you could please help me with the wiki-code formatting over at Template:Infobox NBA season? Specifically, I am trying to hard-code the wiki-code formatting so that it resembles the wiki-code formatting over at Template:Infobox NFL team season using Template:Basketball color cell & Template:Basketball color cell2. Please help me? Charlesaaronthompson (talk) 06:22, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Charlesaaronthompson, start a thread at Template talk:Infobox NBA season and I will have a look. Frietjes (talk) 18:29, 19 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

Hello, Frietjes,

I see that you have tagged quite a few categories for CSD C1 speedy deletion as empty categories but they aren't empty (see the second page of Category:Empty categories awaiting deletion). When I looked a sample category that contained one template, I don't see individual templates listed for discussion at TFD but a proposal to delete a category which should really happen at CFD, not TFD. Typically we untag categories that are tagged but not actually empty but I wanted to check in with you first. However, another editor might take the initiative to untag all of these not empty categories. Liz Read! Talk! 01:39, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Liz all the categories that were tagged contained templates that were deleted at TfD. The only category that I see in the link that you provided is Category:United States men's national water polo team convenience templates, which I have now untagged since it will be deleted when the corresponding discussion closes. not sure why is zero for a category with pages. Graph:Chart - Party color template[edit]

Hi there. I was suggest to by a user to come to you about adapting the "Graph:Chart" template to accept the "party color" template to be used. Is it possible that the aforementioned template can be altered so that the latter can be used? ValenciaThunderbolt (talk) 12:21, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ValenciaThunderbolt, can you provide an example I can used for creating/testing something? I will probably create a wrapper that calls both to avoid possibly screwing up the main modules. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 21:42, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'll create a sandbox for it :) ValenciaThunderbolt (talk) 21:44, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just added to my own. ValenciaThunderbolt (talk) 21:48, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there :) Have you managed to create a wrapper modules yet? ValenciaThunderbolt (talk) 14:28, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ValenciaThunderbolt, I have something that works by going through the template interface (see User:Frietjes/political graph). the syntax is the same as "Graph:Chart", but you can use |y1Party= which sets the color and the title using data from "party color". to override the title, which is the party shortname, you use |y1Title= as before. we just to decide on a name for the new wrapper template. on a side note, I had hoped to get something that went through the module interface, but there are bugs with no help here. but, it's probably not a big deal, just a curiosity why the module-interface version isn't working. Frietjes (talk) 15:41, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay and thank you :) ValenciaThunderbolt (talk) 16:01, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ValenciaThunderbolt, any suggestions for a name for the wrapper template, or , or Political chart, or Political graph, or something else? Frietjes (talk) 16:03, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think the first one is best, so it's in keeping with the existing template. ValenciaThunderbolt (talk) 16:08, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ValenciaThunderbolt, okay, now live at , let me know if you see any problems. Frietjes (talk) 16:30, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay and thank you again :) ValenciaThunderbolt (talk) 16:36, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Template help[edit]

Frietjes
IATA CDD Callsign
thing

Can you help with Infobox airline? Currently the box has entries available for IATA, ICAO and a callsign. I'd like another one in there. Currently Nav Canada has two letter Canadian Domestic Designators but I don't know if any other country uses anything like that. Would it be possible to add that in a way that would be a choice between the ICAO or the domestic designator? Thanks. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 21:16, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

CambridgeBayWeather, I added |CDD= to template:Infobox airline/sandbox. it will override the |ICAO= column in the table if non-blank. I wasn't sure what to use for the abbreviation or link, so feel free to change as desired. Frietjes (talk) 21:46, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. That was quick. That's it exactly. The abbreviation and link looks fine. If someone else says they use domestic designators it can be changed. Thank you. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 03:10, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Template Infobox tennis tournament year[edit]

Hi Frietjes, can you perhaps explain why the tournament link in the footer of the infobox at the tennis article 2011 Open 13 goes to the redirect Open 13 (tennis) instead of directly to Open 13? Had a look at the template but can not figure out where the '(tennis)' suffix comes from. Thanks.--Wolbo (talk) 13:29, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wolbo, if you search for (tennis) in Template:Infobox tennis tournament year/footer you will see there is several "ifexist" checks that look for the (tennis) dab first, and use it when it exists. this is presumably to avoid the worse problem of linking to a non-tennis article or to a disambiguation page. deleting Open 13 (tennis) would fix the problem. or, we could have a |event_link= parameter to override if this is a common problem. Frietjes (talk) 16:32, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. Will discuss it further in the tennis project to see if this issue is significant enough to warrant a |event_link= parameter.--Wolbo (talk) 17:06, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization of templates related to Olympics[edit]

Could you please clarify the reasons for the series of edits that a) make categorization less specific and b) emptied several existing categories? Some edits moved templates between categories: e.g. the last edit Special:Diff/1143235956 – a template about Football at the 2008 Summer Olympics is moved from Category:2008 Summer Olympics football templates to less specific Category:2008 Summer Olympics templates. Some edits just remove categorization – Special:Diff/1143231407. There were also edits of categories.

I checked some of the edits, but none of them seem to have any edit summaries. —andrybak (talk) 21:42, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

all of these categories had either (a) only one item/category, or (b) only one category which will soon be deleted. sorry for the lack of edit summaries. I can send it to WP:CFD if you would like. Frietjes (talk) 21:44, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Emptying categories like that only to immediately mark them for speedy deletion seems like a subversion of WP:C1. Going through CfD would be appreciated. —andrybak (talk) 21:53, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
will do. Frietjes (talk) 21:55, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
andrybak, you can stop the reverts, I am doing it. Frietjes (talk) 21:58, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I had the same question, all of the category/template moves and taggings ballooned Category:Empty categories awaiting deletion and then hours later, deflated it. I guess I'll check out CFD to see what is going on.
By the way, at this rate, you're going to hit 900,000 edits soon! Geez, louis, that's a lot of editing activity over 12 years! Thanks for all of the time and talent contributed to the project! Be sure to get outside once and a while and take a few deep breaths. ;-) Liz Read! Talk! 22:42, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

LST nominations[edit]

Hey, could you either pause your LST nominations or do them in significantly larger batches for now? Replying to them all is an absolute pain and it's difficult to properly discuss them as a group when they are spread out over two dozen nominations. --Trialpears (talk) 04:28, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

pausing is not a problem. the group size based on the number of templates in each category, and to allow the automated tools to close the discussion. Frietjes (talk) 16:21, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Understandable reasons to not increase the group size and thanks for doing this. If you haven't already I would suggest you check out the VPP discussion. --Trialpears (talk) 21:37, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

TFD and category query[edit]

Hello, Frietjes,

I saw yesterday that all of these national Olympic ice hockey team roster template categories were emptied yesterday except, for some reason, that of Finland. You can see this here at Category:Olympic ice hockey team roster templates by nation.

When I backtracked to try to figure out what was going on, I found a TFD you started on the subject for a Olympic ice hocky team roster template that was just closed. Do you have any idea why the Finland category wasn't affected? It seems crazy to maintain a category like this for just one country so if you could find the template that is causing the Finland category to be populated, it would be great if you could also nominate it at TFD. If, on the other hand, this category was filled the old-fashioned way, by adding articles individually, I guess we could find alternative categories to place these pages. Any way, I just thought you might know what had happened here and why these categories emptied out. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 17:39, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Liz, it looks like those were not in the same roster categories with the others, and some are the only roster templates for that year. I will send them to TfD since they are single-use. Frietjes (talk) 18:54, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I need help![edit]

Hello Frietjes, I was wondering if you would please take a look at the wiki-code formatting over at Template:Navbox when you get time? I'm trying to figure out what the hide button at the far right of the template shows two black-colored brackets and the clickable button to collapse the template is blue-colored. Please help me? I'm asking because I know you are more technically proficient at these things than I am. Charlesaaronthompson (talk) 04:56, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Charlesaaronthompson, from this thread it looks like MediaWiki:Common.js calls some core code to insert the show/hide buttons. the show/hide text is set by MediaWiki:Collapsible-collapse/MediaWiki:Collapsible-expand. if you want more details on how the backend makeCollapsible works, I would suggest asking at WP:VPT or one of the editors who commented in the VPT thread. Frietjes (talk) 14:03, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Frietjes: Wouldn't it be possible for someone (either you or someone else) to fix it for me on my behalf please? All I'm requesti=ng is for the wiki-code formatting at Template:Navbox to show the show/hide buttons in respective colors for each NFL, MLB, NBA & NHL teams. Charlesaaronthompson (talk) 02:31, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Charlesaaronthompson, I won't be able to fix it for you. if you want to ask at WP:VPT, here is a simple example that illustrates what is going on
This is the title
This is the body
This is the title
This is the body
in order to color the link, you would need to get the "color:white" from the style inside of the link for "show/hide". I do not think this is possible, but someone at WP:VPT may know better. Frietjes (talk) 15:12, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cite PH act to use CS1?[edit]

Hello Frietjes. cite PH act seems to use citation template instead of CS1 templates (e.g. cite book), which is most commonly used in Philippine-related articles. If possible, can you please convert the template to CS1 format (like what cite act does)? Thanks. Sanglahi86 (talk) 05:57, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sanglahi86, I converted it to a wrapper like cite act. let me know if something isn't working properly. Frietjes (talk) 15:07, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the prompt response and action. Best regards. Sanglahi86 (talk) 03:20, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Improving cite constitution[edit]

Hello Frietjes. Sorry to bother you again. I was about to use cite constitution but it appears the template is very limited (code below). Can you please allow it to support the following parameters: url, website, archive-url, and archive-date (and probably access-date and via) (other users in the template talk page appear to want a URL parameter included).

Sample code:

code result (does not support several parameters):

"Article XIV, Section 7". Constitution of the Philippines. Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines. 1987. Archived from the original on June 9, 2017. Retrieved February 11, 2023.

Thanks. Sanglahi86 (talk) 04:42, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sanglahi86, should work now. Frietjes (talk) 15:22, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Can you please check on why some parameters (section, polity) are not displayed in the final result? For the code above, I was expecting something like (if it is not redundant):
"Article IV, Section 1 of the Constitution of the Philippines" (1987). Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines. Archived from the original on June 9, 2017. Retrieved February 11, 2023. Sanglahi86 (talk) 15:54, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sanglahi86, sorry, missed those, should work now? not sure which parameter to use for polity since it can't go inside the external link. I am using |series= in cite web right now. Frietjes (talk) 16:30, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It works but only a minor error "URL–wikilink conflict". Maybe limiting the web link to "Article IV" only will help? Or do you think it would be better/simpler remove the link to the "Constitution of the Philippines" to avoid that error? Sanglahi86 (talk) 16:36, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sanglahi86, how is that? I can also try to add italics around the "website". having the weblink restricted to the Article IV is possible, but may require not using cite web. Frietjes (talk) 16:41, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It looks great. I agree italics around the website is better, but I do not know why it may require not using cite web. Will forcing italics on it require using CS2 (citation)? Sanglahi86 (talk) 16:48, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sanglahi86, okay, I added italic around the website. using citation would allow more control over the appearance since it has more parameters. getting the polity right after the title is tricky with cite web due to the parameter ordering. Frietjes (talk) 17:03, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It looks all good now. Best regards. Sanglahi86 (talk) 17:28, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I try not to make the sportizens unhappy, but yes, that is satisfactory display for me personally (besides the double bolding in the caption). I just assume these templates do have a standard and that they should use that standard, because most sports stuff does have a template lying around. Izno (talk) 20:27, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is Template:Standings Table Start which could be converted to its own css? Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 03:12, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That does look like an equivalent template, maybe missing some of the same info? e.g. Template:2009 CWUAA football standings. It will have to be cleaned up itself but that can be done later. Izno (talk) 03:45, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
okay, working on it. first, converting the start/end to lua, next adding support for an additional column. Frietjes (talk) 16:25, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Izno, okay, fixed a bunch on your list (mostly by converting to wikitable, but we could probably make a start/end for those instead if someone complains). thanks for the fixes on the lua version of the CFB and CBB templates. I still need to do a bit more testing with it, but it should be generally functional at this point. Frietjes (talk) 16:59, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you![edit]

Hello, Frietjes,

I just wanted to thank you for the time you spend with templates, such as those at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2023 June 22#Liberty ships templates, that need to be cleaned up before they can be deleted. TFD is a world unto itself and I've tried to go through the Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Holding cell before but it's not always clear to me what needs to be done. Having you review the templates that were part of a TFD discussion and tag them when they are ready for speedy deletion really helps. There have been times in the past I thought it was okay to delete a template and made a mess of things so having an editor who knows templates "okay" deletion helps me know that, yes, they can be deleted. Thanks again for helping us who are less knowledgeable about templates. Liz Read! Talk! 23:14, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Liz, thank you for deleting them as they are tagged. obviously, not everything in the holding cell is ready for deletion, which is why I try to tag them as they are orphaned per the TfD outcome. thank you for your help. Frietjes (talk) 23:15, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Query[edit]

Hello, Frietjes,

Since you are so knowledge about templates, I just came across Wikipedia:Discord/Quotes/quote and it seems to my uneducated eye that it should be in the Template namespace, not it Project space (or back to User space). What do you think? Liz Read! Talk! 18:08, 1 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That template-looking page is specific basically only to that single project page. It's preferable in most instances not to put such pages in the template namespace. Izno (talk) 20:15, 1 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
yes, I agree. Frietjes (talk) 15:58, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Airport destination list[edit]

You were the last person to edit Airport destination list back in 2015. Is there any chance you can modify the template, per my talk page request, to remove the 95% forced font size. It serves no good purpose to have this table displayed in a smaller font than the rest of an article's body text. Thanks. 10mmsocket (talk) 11:45, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

10mmsocket, okay, removed here. Frietjes (talk) 14:18, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tfd deletion of Talk page text.[edit]

I hadn't been to the TFD page before today, I'm a low-code editor, but I found a section of text that you deleted from a Talk page back in 2020 42, "per tfd outcome", so I did check it out. But given it only a hunk of text and had no templates beyond user tags and sigs, I'm still confused. Sorry, I know it was a long time ago, but is there a different TFD that I'm missing? Help with Template:Repechage dumping into tracking category[edit]

Hey Frietjes! I was hoping you could help me with something that it looks like you've been involved with in the past. I've taken to clearing out Category:Pages using a team bracket with deprecated syntax (there were a LOT of college basketball pages in that category, which is my primary interest). I have the category mostly emptied, but there's one template, Repechage, which is coded to only accept byes=y, the deprecated syntax. Trying to change it to byes=1/2/whichever breaks the template.

I tried to reach out to the template's creator, and their response was basically "it's not my template that's wrong, it's all of the others." Given that I couldn't make that fix even if I thought it was practical, I was hoping you could take a look and help me out, because I do not have anywhere near the module expertise to make that work.

Thank you so much in advance! -fuzzy510 (talk) 16:22, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Repechage uses Module:Build bracket not Module:Team bracket, which uses different syntax, and should not be adding pages to Category:Pages using a team bracket with deprecated syntax. the deprecated |byes=y is only for Module:Team bracket, and may not need to be deprecated considering the confusion with Module:Build bracket? Frietjes (talk) 16:30, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well that certainly makes that part a lot easier......are you able to tell why it is adding into that category incorrectly? -fuzzy510 (talk) 17:09, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm pretty sure it's not. if a page is in that category, there is probably another non-Repechage bracket on the page that is adding the page to the category. for example, in 2005 World Wrestling Championships – Men's Greco-Roman 120 kg, the "top half" bracket has |byes=y. but, since it's confusing to have |byes=y work for one but not the other, we could probably just undeprecate |byes=y for Module:Team bracket. Frietjes (talk) 17:12, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
HA. I completely missed that. Wow. Good job, me.
Would you prefer I not touch any of those, since it now seems like the status of byes is maybe up in the air? -fuzzy510 (talk) 17:26, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
upon closer inspection, it looks like for Module:Team bracket, |byes=y means the maximum round where byes happen is round 1. in contrast for Module:Build bracket, |byes=y means all rounds can have byes. the "all rounds" seems more intuitive to me, but in most cases you get the same result if the bracket has been filled. we should probably harmonize the syntax so it means the same thing for both, which means either (a) checking all entries in the category, or (b) checking/changing all entries in the category before changing the behavior of the module. whatever you want to do is fine with me. it seems low priority to me, so no rush to do anything. Frietjes (talk) 17:57, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds great! Thanks! fuzzy510 (talk) 21:28, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I made redirects to actual country data templates. So I don't know why they are showing up in here:

At least they are no longer red links in that list.

I believe that template redirects can take awhile to show up in actual articles using template redirects. So eventually the flags show up.

It looks like the Northern Ireland flag has shown up above using the template redirect in the top table. Is there a way I can speed that up in the country list here?:

I tried Ctrl-F5 and a purge link I have installed via gadget to get the flags to show up in this version of the page before you added the nodata=1 parameter:

--Timeshifter (talk) 19:38, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Timeshifter, the database report is only updated once per day, so you have to wait. if the country data templates either (a) now exist or (b) are no longer being transcluded, they will be removed from the database report the next time it is generated. that said, I have no idea why you need to create the majority of these redirects when there is are |name= and |clink= parameters in flagg. Frietjes (talk) 19:45, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I will be patient then. I have edited and updated many country and state tables over the years. Creating redirects is a permanent solution. Versus having to customize many flag links every time a table is updated yearly. Please see:
Help:Table#Adding flags and linking countries, states, etc. in lists

For the red links create redirects as necessary. For example, if countries, then to the correct country data templates. Save this initial table permanently in a user sandbox without overwriting it. This is so that the redirects are kept due to being in use on that sandbox page. Otherwise, admins will delete unused redirects, and you will have to do this tedious, time-consuming redirect task every time you fully update the table. In the edit summary of such redirects, add something like this: "Please do not delete this redirect. It is sometimes used in updates of NAME OF ARTICLE WITH TABLE."

Findargdups "nothing found" message[edit]

Hi Frietjes; thanks for creating and maintaining Findargdups! If you're looking for ways to improve it, I was a bit confused when trying it out recently that sometimes nothing happens when I click the button. It'd be nice if it came back with a "nothing found" all-good message when there are no duplicates detected. Cheers, Sdkbtalk 22:15, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sdkb, okay, this is now an optional feature, see Adding a message when no duplicates are found. Frietjes (talk) 15:31, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Is your sense that there are some users of the script who would find such a message annoying/disruptive? Asking just since my main goal is to spare other new users of the script the moment of confusion I had about why it wasn't outputting anything, and a default-off feature has limited utility for that unless they read the full documentation.
One way to make the "all good!" notice less disruptive might be to have it display as a popover (the same thing that comes up after you click to watchlist a page) rather than a message that must be dismissed by clicking OK. Sdkbtalk 15:53, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
you can change from an "alert" popup to a less intrusive results box with
findargdupsresultsbox = 'yes'; findargdupsnoalertbox = 'yes';
these are the settings that I used. my usual workflow is that the first time I click, I see a results box, then I fix problems, then I click again and see if the results box disappears. there are a lot of people using this script, so I hesitate to change the default behavior to avoid disrupting other people's workflows. If you know the javascript for the "watchlist popover", I can do that instead of what I just added. Frietjes (talk) 16:06, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like the documentation is here (kudos to @AntiCompositeNumber for helping me find it). They're unobtrusive enough that I'd be surprised if anyone found them disruptive even if they were default-on. Having every button click give some sort of feedback, just to show that it registered the click, seems like a usability best practice. Cheers, Sdkbtalk 17:06, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
okay done and documented. it looks like there are other options for bubble notifications that I didn't investigate (title, autohide, ...). Frietjes (talk) 19:04, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent; much thanks! Hope folks appreciate it! Sdkbtalk 20:12, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Canadian templates[edit]

Are you updating most of the template links? if so, I'm sorry if I'm putting lots more work for you. Ebbedlila (talk) 23:14, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

not a problem, it's also given me a chance to fix errors like [43] [44] where these were being redirected to the wrong year. Frietjes (talk) 14:08, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking of using AWB to do the template change years, basically what you are doing. Should I do it?Ebbedlila (talk) 14:49, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am taking care of all the "Canadian federal" links using a semi-automated script (about 70 percent done). the script checks to see if the election template is a redirect, and updates it if necessary. I find this more robust than relying on a particular expected pattern for the renaming. Frietjes (talk) 15:07, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Seems there are 69 templates left that need to be moved to be consistent with the others Category:Canada election result templates (complete list) and Template:Canadian federal election/on-e. Gonnym (talk) 16:12, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Module:Team bracket[edit]

Hello. I'm french wikipedian and don't really understand all Lua Langage (somme basis). The Module:Team bracket has been copied by an another user on french Wikipedia without documentation here : fr:Module:Tableau Coupe sans limite. When I'm watching the english doc, it is written: "RDn-shadem-s - Background coloring for team m in round n and set s (or leg for multileg matches)" but when I tried to use it, only the score is colored (not the team, neither the seed). When I watch the code, it seems that only the score can be colored: function getShadeArg(round, team, s) used in scoreCells[s] = row:tag('td') :css('background-color', getShadeArg(round, team, s) but css('background-color' for seedCell is forced to #f2f2f2 and for teamCell to #f9f9f9. My understanding is that the loop "s" is only for score in local function renderTeam and :css('background-color', getShadeArg(round, team, s) can't be use for teamCell and seedCell currently. Is it possible to modify the code to use RDn-shadem-s to all cells and how ? (here are my limits) If not here on english WP, can you help on french WP ? Thank you. Supertoff (talk) 06:35, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Supertoff, you are correct. we can allow shading of the seed and team or the entire row in the cell, but we need to decide on the input syntax. I put something in the sandbox, shown in Template:Team bracket/testcases/5. this adds RDn-shadem to shade the team and all the cells. I put in a separate seed suffix for shading the seed, since the seed is usually darker than the other cells, but I am open to other/better syntax choices. Frietjes (talk) 15:11, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I think it would be nice to have too the possibility of complete line (seed too) in the same color with only the RDn-shadem. I don't know if there is a priority in Lua code (if shadeseed and shade are present together). If yes, maybe something like that ?
seedCell = row:tag('td')
 :css('text-align', 'center')
 :css('background-color', shadeseed or shade)

Supertoff (talk) 16:04, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Supertoff, okay. the "or" only works when using "nil", but I made a functionally equivalent change. I can update the main module if the syntax/functionality looks suitable. Frietjes (talk) 18:09, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's ok, you can do it. Thank you again. Supertoff (talk) 05:51, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Frietjes, can you make it so that Template:NCAA color cell and Template:NCAA secondary color cell auto adjust the font color, please? Corkythehornetfan are you talking about these tables? the font color is set manually in those tables. Frietjes (talk) 13:18, 5 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! Michigan and Minnesota both, if their secondary color is used, uses the white font and it is not compatible (white on gold/yellow)... Corky 23:21, 5 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Corkythehornetfan if you edit that section of the article, you can change #FFFFFF to whatever color you want. the module has no way of overriding the manual specification of colors in the article. Frietjes (talk) 14:16, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Module:Transcludable section[edit]

Hello,

Hope you are well,

I wondered if you could help me out with a query about this module. I don't know why but it has been creating a lot of white space on some articles. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from as the code was basically identical to that on other articles. As an example, the code on 2022 Glasgow City Council election and 2022 East Ayrshire Council election are the same but the Glasgow wards (eg- Newlands/Auldburn (ward)) have white space added whereas the East Ayrshire ones (eg- Ballochmyle (ward)) don't. I don't know if I've coded it wrong or not so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Module:Party name with color[edit]

Good evening, very sorry to bother you. I'm writing to ask you if you can help me. In Mediawiki content translation tool (from en.wiki to de.wiki) there is a problem between Template:Party name with color and de.wiki Vorlage:Parteinamefarbe, which is based on Modul:Parteinamefarbe (and on Modul:Partei). In particular (see here, section "Leadership") Mediawiki returns "|| style="width:2px; background-color:#FDF38E;"| |Scottish National Party" (there isn't any double vertical line between color and party name, because there is a white space between the two lines) and an other column with the party name. Anyway, there isn't any problem (see "Political composition") between Template:Party color and Vorlage:Parteifarbe, which is based on Modul:Partei. About Vorlage:Parteinamefarbe, the problem could be caused by the lines 19-24 of Modul:Parteifarbe. I've been thinking about a solution for several days, but I don't understand the cause of the problem. I'd be very happy if you wanted to help me. Sorry for my request. Cheers. --Zukunft99 (talk) 01:34, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Zukunft99, your "see here" link didn't work for me, so it's hard for me to debug the problem. Frietjes (talk) 15:42, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello and thanks for your answer. Well, the tool works when I click on "Übersetzung starten" and then on the right side of the screen, next to the table that must be translated. I see this and the results is this (color code #DABAD0 is a default color, when the party color has not been specified in de.wiki). Zukunft99 (talk) 17:17, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Zukunft99, sorry, but I am not familiar with the Mediawiki content translation tool. if there is a problem with the module, I could probably help, but not with the translation tool. Frietjes (talk) 17:40, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that we can't modify the string style="background-color:Party name"| in Mediawiki. We can modify Party name, only if it's not included in that string. But it's a Mediawiki problem, I think. Thanks for your availability. Cheers. Zukunft99 (talk) 16:04, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Zukunft99, interesting, so is this better? Frietjes (talk) 14:45, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I connected de:Template:Parteifarbezelle with Template:Party color cell in wikidata, but there's an inconvenience. Parteifarbezelle doesn't include any vertical line at the end of the string: the vertical line must be added inside the articles, for example: Labour Party|. This difference between de.wiki and en.wiki causes a mistake in Mediawiki.
Template:Parteifarbezelle doesn't include any vertical line because this template is often used with Template:PersonZelle, the same of Template:Sortname: these last templates include a vertical line at the end of the string, and we can't have two vertical lines. For example: in | Labour Party Name the final vertical line is included in Template:PersonZelle (see here).
In these cases (color + text), en.wiki uses, for example, Template:Party shading/Labour Party (UK) (lighter color), which doesn't include any vertical line. On the countrary, de.wiki automatically calculates the lighter color: the opacity of the standard color decreases automatically, if color is an HEX Code (see Modul:Partei, p.hellere, line 53). Zukunft99 (talk) 13:36, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
interesting. I can see how the additional pipe is a problem. we do have Template:HexShade which automatically changes the shading of a HEX Code, but it's not integrated with Module:Political party, but probably should be. Frietjes (talk) 15:03, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I saw the template is up for deletion, but i am not sure I understand why exactly, wondered if you can simplify it for me to understand here, cheers, thanks. Govvy (talk) 20:42, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Govvy, a couple reasons. (1) navigation templates with only a few links are generally deleted per WP:NENAN and prior consensus at WP:TFD. (2) in this case, the navigation is redundant to navigation found in Template:Tottenham Hotspur F.C.. Frietjes (talk) 21:48, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WNBA Roster Templates[edit]

Hi Frietjes. I was just wondering if you knew of a reason that the historic roster template for the WNBA rosters doesn't use the years parameter? Its on the current roster, but disappears when switching to the historic one. Do you think that would be something to add to the historic ones? I think the template would just need to use the parameter, it seems the text of the actual articles includes the years as part of the historic roster. Thanks! Swimmer33 (talk) 00:33, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Swimmer33, I am not clear what you are asking. you have linked to "current" with text "historic"? I see |season= in WNBA roster header historic but no |years= in either. are you asking about the footer? Frietjes (talk) 15:29, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, maybe this will clarify. In the template documentation, in the table in the players section, You can see for the current roster the parameter |yrs= is listed as "The number of years the player has played in the WNBA. If this is the players first season value should be R." However, in the Historic Rosters section it is shown as "Not used". I was thinking of updating the Historic players section to also be number of years the player has played in the WNBA. Swimmer33 (talk) 15:54, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Swimmer33, I see. we could have Template:WNBA roster header historic use playerW instead of player2, but I think that would require updating all the uses since they output a different number of columns. but, it would be less confusing. Frietjes (talk) 17:18, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was hoping you may know an easier way to have the WNBA roster header historic use the |yrs= instead. Or maybe the player2. It wouldn't be a big deal to leave as is, thought it might be an easy fix. I reached out to you since you've helped with other WNBA template type stuff in the past. Swimmer33 (talk) 19:15, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Swimmer33, if we add an extra column to Template:WNBA roster header historic and someone uses player2, then it would probably look okay (just missing the last column). I wouldn't mess with the player2 template since it's used on about 2700 pages for different leagues. the WNBA roster header historic is used on under 200 pages, so not that hard to change all the uses after an update. Frietjes (talk) 19:20, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will leave any edits to you. I don't really feel comfortable editing important things like templates. I just thought it would be good to keep the # of seasons played displayed in older WNBA rosters. Swimmer33 (talk) 19:35, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Swimmer33, should be all converted now. Frietjes (talk) 20:42, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I notice you've just tagged a bunch of Google-related articles with |alphabet=yes. First of all, I'm not sure what the purpose of that is, as every Google article is related to Alphabet, but it seems you've only tagged a small subset of Google articles. Secondly, I'm not sure if it's beneficial to tag a taskforce that has been defunct for six years. Could you explain your edits? InfiniteNexus (talk) 21:51, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

InfiniteNexus, just following instructions, see this discussion. Frietjes (talk) 21:56, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Apologies, thanks for letting me know. Perhaps next time it would be helpful if you linked relevant discussions in your edit summaries. InfiniteNexus (talk) 21:58, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@InfiniteNexus those pages were tagged already and the the Google template has alphabet as a task force so other than remove a duplicate-ish template, nothing new was added. Gonnym (talk) 21:58, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I feel like they should just be removed, the taskforce has been defunct since 2017. InfiniteNexus (talk) 22:01, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
InfiniteNexus, fine with me, I count about 58 uses, so no big effort. Frietjes (talk) 22:06, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead. InfiniteNexus (talk) 22:09, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have no preference either way, but if they are removed, then Template:WikiProject Google should be updated to remove the categorization for the task force articles and tagging the categories as empty (Category:Alphabet task force articles) to finish off this clean up job. Gonnym (talk) 22:10, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Frietjes,

I see that you recently put together this helpful list. Today, PrimeBot removed all of the talk page banners from the 1.0 articles. But it also removed talk page banners for Version 0.7 articles. Could you put together a similar list for 0.7 articles? I'm not sure how much it will be used but I think it would be easier to put together now rather at than some time in the future. Thank you for considering this request. Liz Read! Talk! 01:41, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Liz, I will have a look, but there is Wikipedia:0.7/0.7alpha. I didn't see a similar list for 1.0, which is why I created that page. Frietjes (talk) 21:12, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
are you talking about pages like this one that had |v0.7=pass? Frietjes (talk) 21:35, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

LOL[edit]

I thought at first this [45] was some drive-by's joke edit at first. Heh.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  07:51, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

SMcCandlish, apparently, Rich Farmbrough thought that Francis Bacon was edible. I removed several of these from the redirects. Frietjes (talk) 15:05, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
His full name was Francis Back-Bacon, and he's from the esteemed Peameal-Bacon lineage, from which also arose the Canadian Bacons.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  15:23, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Just out of curiousity...[edit]

...why are you doing seemingly useless edits like this? --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 15:35, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Jpgordon, that removed the page from Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls since there were two |1= (one positional and one named). Frietjes (talk) 17:32, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but so what? Are those duplicate arguments somehow harmful to the project? Especially on things like declined unblock requests, I can't see how they make any difference at all. I only notice because on a lot of the ones you're changing, I was the last editor (I handle a ton of unblock requests) and so they show up in my watchlist. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 18:47, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
having false positives in Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls makes it harder to find actual problems. I have contacted the bot-operator who has a bot that fixes these, so no problem. Frietjes (talk) 16:40, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Speedway template[edit]

Hi Frietjes, I aborted a couple of attempts editing the Template:Infobox motorcycle speedway team. I was trying to add a couple of optional parameters, one being the club's promoter and another having the option to enter a second set of rider's because some team's have two sets of riders a senior and junior team). However, I could not get it to work despite practicing in my sandbox. If you do get any time I wonder if you would consider looking at the optional parameters. Many thanks Pyeongchang (talk) 16:18, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pyeongchang, it looks like the problem was that you were trying to use duplicate numbers, for example, this won't work because you need to increment the numbers of all the parameters below that one (like this), and insert the new parameters as |label6=, |data6=, ... (like this). I can help you with the second set of riders, but we need to decide on the parameter names, |rider1j= for junior? Frietjes (talk) 18:30, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Than you so much for your help, the result looks good, see Ipswich Witches. The suggestion for the second set of riders is perfect i.e. rider1j, if you could help with this one too (because it looks a bit trickier) that would be awesome. Pyeongchang (talk) 13:26, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Pyeongchang, okay, added, they are the same as the other rider parameters but with the additional "j". Frietjes (talk) 16:40, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Philippine cultural property row coordinates in dms format[edit]

Hello. Can you please check on ? It does not convert the coordinates to dms format (List of Cultural Properties of the Philippines in the Ilocos Region), unlike in Manila cultural property row (List of Cultural Properties of the Philippines in Metro Manila). Can you please allow it to use dms format? Thanks. Sanglahi86 (talk) 06:59, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request in fixing cite PH act error[edit]

Hello Frietjes. Can you please check and fix cite PH act? It causes a |website=ignored error in pages where it is used, like in Legislative districts of Baguio. Thank you. Sanglahi86 (talk) 09:14, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sanglahi86, I switched it from cite book to citation (which is what it was using before the April 2023 refactor). but, the numeric stuff in the author field is still causing other warnings. should that be put in another field? Frietjes (talk) 16:12, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I am at a loss on how to fix that warning, but can we accept the number parameter as written markup using the two sets of parentheses as recommended? Sanglahi86 (talk) 12:38, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sanglahi86, that works, I didn't know about that hack. Frietjes (talk) 16:37, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

CSD G7s[edit]

Hello, Frietjes,

As you can see at Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#G7. Author requests deletion, policy states For redirects created as a result of a page move, the mover must also have been the only substantive contributor to the pages before the move. So, please do not tag pages for CSD G7 deletion if you are just the page mover and not the creator of the original template. I had hoped when I untagged these tagged redirects, I would have gotten this point across but you are still tagging them so here's an explanation of why that is inappropriate. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 00:55, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

okay, I will use G6 for these move errors. Frietjes (talk) 17:08, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some help is needed. There were previous instances where a team automatically wins the championship without playing the playoffs or championship round. Is there a way it can be added? Howard the Duck (talk) 21:02, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Howard the Duck, so what needs to be added? do you have a page where this would be used? Frietjes (talk) 21:17, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Examples would be NCAA Season 58 basketball tournaments, NCAA Season 64 basketball tournaments and UAAP Season 56 men's basketball tournament. We'd have to make the Template:Infobox PH collegiate finals/score optional by which it will be replaced by "Automatic champions" and "First runner-up".
I suppose we'd also have to label each Men/Women/Juniors tournament with another row and not use Template:Infobox PH collegiate finals/score as the "boundary", if we'd implement this. Howard the Duck (talk) 21:31, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Howard the Duck, see alternative syntax in Template:Infobox PH collegiate finals and let me know if I got it right or if changes are needed. Frietjes (talk) 22:26, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This should work, but since there is no longer a "Finals" round, we could remove the duration, arena, Finals MVP and (TV) network parameters. Howard the Duck (talk) 22:29, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Howard the Duck, any parameters you leave blank do not appear, but I can remove them from the cut-and-paste in the documentation if you want. Frietjes (talk) 22:31, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but it is a good idea that they don't show up in the documentation, or don't work at all. NCAA Season 58 basketball tournaments looks better now with an infobox. Howard the Duck (talk) 22:34, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to use addcheckforunknownparameters.js[edit]

Hi

I don't know how to use User:Frietjes/addcheckforunknownparameters.js.

Should I copy it to my user subpage, like User:Shkuru Afshar/vector.js?

Cheers Shkuru Afshar (talk) 05:43, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shkuru Afshar, go to User:Shkuru Afshar/vector.js (or User:Shkuru Afshar/common.js if you want it available on all skins) and add it like Jonesey95 did here on line 56. Frietjes (talk) 18:52, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Election results[edit]

Sorry to bother you (again), but I have added a divisor function to Infobox election (for tables like this where voters have multiple votes). Although the divisor function works, it makes the total of the percent column add up to over 100%. Is there any way to set the total of the percentage column to 100.00 when the divisor function is used? Cheers, Number 57 21:12, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User:Number 57, this seems to work. it would have been nice to just do this, but that changes the valid votes as well. Frietjes (talk) 16:21, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fantastic, thank you so much (as always)! Number 57 21:26, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ranking Table Coding Help[edit]

Hi Frietjes! I wanted to ping you since you are the only wikipedian I've encountered who has helped with template coding issues. For college baseball pages, one of the old ranking companies that was used on pages went out of business and now we are trying to update the tables that all the pages use appropriately. The discussion has been here: Template talk:NCAA Division I baseball ranking movements#New Template Needed. I'd appreciate any help you can provide! Swimmer33 (talk) 14:54, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Swimmer33, looks reasonable, but I didn't check in any articles. do you still need help? Frietjes (talk) 16:05, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so! Sorry to bug, didn't know how fast the others would be helping. Swimmer33 (talk) 16:41, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Swimmer33, no problem, glad you were able to sort it out. Frietjes (talk) 16:42, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Another kind of sports table results[edit]

We have Module:Sports rbr table and Module:Sports results, that roughly shows the progression of a tournament as time goes by. In 2023–24 PBA Commissioner's Cup#Results table, someone ditched these two tables and used just one. Is it possible to create a similar module? A few leagues have formats where most games are neutral site games, or most clubs share a stadium to the point must matches are held there, and they could use this table like this. Howard the Duck (talk) 00:12, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Howard the Duck, definitely possible, but we need to decide on the input syntax. for example, |match1_BGSM_CON=100–86 or what? the coloring could be generally automatic by comparing the two numbers and checking for the * after the score. but how should the input parameters be named? Frietjes (talk) 21:02, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't really thought about input syntax, but what you suggested should work. Howard the Duck (talk) 22:59, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Howard the Duck, I started working on it here. I still need to get the legend in there, but it should be generally working. I will continue working on it tomorrow. let me know if you see any problems. Frietjes (talk) 01:16, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'd prefer to keep the style that you are using now for the other results tables for the footers (sources, last updated).
Also, for Module:Sports rbr table, I'd also suggest on keeping the same footer style from Module:Sports results, more so on the legend. Just keep "Matches with lighter background shading were decided after overtime" instead of adding an actual legend, and if possible, to link to Overtime (sports), and another optional note on asterisks denoting the number of OT periods (as not every league does this). Howard the Duck (talk) 01:26, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Howard the Duck, I changed the footer to better match Module:Sports results. I have also added an |m1_XXX_YYY=auto option which finds/flips the score from |m#_YYY_XXX=. Is this the best input syntax, or should we have the same |match_XXX_YYY= as Module:Sports results and a separate |order_XXX=AAA, BBB, CCC where you specify the match order for each team? Frietjes (talk) 20:33, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd prefer |m#_YYY_XXX= that should be easier to understand and edit. Howard the Duck (talk) 23:05, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Could the "m#" part of the code be made optional? In many cases, teams play each other only once. Howard the Duck (talk) 23:49, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Howard the Duck, the m# is for which round, which is why you would need |order_XXX= if you got rid of it. Frietjes (talk) 15:01, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If that's the case I'd rather keep |m#. Howard the Duck (talk) 20:45, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
