Hi, Eastmain, I saw that you declined the A7 speedy tag I had placed on this article, which is of course your prerogative. I'm considering taking it to AfD now that the speedy's been declined, but I wanted to get your perspective on it first. You say the sourcing is "adequate", but I really don't agree; the only two sources cited are a) the company's own website and b) a puff piece in a school newspaper that is talking about how the local branch is no longer a part of the brand in question. This doesn't feel like adequate sourcing to me at all, and I was wondering what your take on it was. Thanks, Writ Keeper  03:05, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Writ Keeper: When an article has been around for a long time, speedy for lack of notability is generally inappropriate. I would avoid using the term "puff piece". I found these additional references: "Bookstores in Malaysia reinventing themselves with lifestyle offerings". The Business Times. Retrieved 2023-05-19. and "New Reading Experience at Times Bookstores New Lifestyle Concept Store at KL Gateway Mall". Pamper.My. 2017-04-10. Retrieved 2023-05-19. . Sometimes when you are looking for references about a topic located in a smaller country, it helps to narrow the search by including "site:my" or "site:sg" in your search, or by sincluding the country's full name. So you could search for

"Times Bookstores" or
"Times Bookstores" Singapore

When the company uses different versions of its name, you should search for both "Times Bookstore" and "Times Bookstores". Eastmain (talkcontribs) 11:51, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

When an article has been around for a long time, speedy for lack of notability is generally inappropriate--this is certainly not policy, and I don't agree with it on principle, either; articles don't get a pass just because they snuck below the radar and nobody has looked at them for years. And I would not avoid using the term "puff piece", because it was a puff piece, written by a media relations team, not a journalist. Nor do I think "pamper.my" is a valid source; it looks like an ad. The Business Times article is...better; I have some doubts, but I'll not get into it further. Thanks for responding. Writ Keeper  12:50, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your contributions to Kykkelsrud hydroelectric power station. Unfortunately, it is not ready for publishing because it needs more sources to establish notability. Your article is now a draft where you can improve it undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Reading Beans (talk) 11:39, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ReferenceExpander[edit]

Just a friendly heads-up in case you weren't already aware, since it's installed on your common.js: Careless use of ReferenceExpander has caused serious problems. It's currently at MFD, and a large cleanup project is underway to repair the citations damaged by the script. I and several other users have !voted that the script be deleted or disabled, and I wouldn't recommend using it at all unless you thoroughly check every reference it modifies against the previous revision. If you're interested in a more detailed explanation of the script's issues, Folly Mox has provided an excellent summary at the MFD. — SamX [talk · contribs] 05:02, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023[edit]

Hello Eastmain,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Notice

The article Nhlanhla "Lux" Dlamini has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence of notability per WP:BIO.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. jps (talk) 12:24, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I think your goal of trying to rescue as many articles from deletion as possible is an admirable one, and in many cases I would take the same view. I've put a lot of effort into improving many articles on Wikipedia in my time, however I don't believe your actions on Intervision Song Contest 1977 are helpful. Removing a PROD without any appropriate feedback and adding three completely unrelated references from the corresponding Russian-language article without even considering how they relate to this article does not help to improve it. The first two references you added do not even contain reference to the Intervision Song Contest at all, but instead the Sopot International Song Festival, which is a different event entirely which Intervision was held alongside between 1977 and 1980. Indeed even the first one falls down on WP:SELFPUB since it comes from a personal website. The third reference, although it is about the 1980 contest, does not provide any relevance to the 1977 contest, and is included in the Russian language article to provide an example of how the format of the contest changed. I have no doubt that the Intervision Song Contest as a whole is notable enough and has significant coverage to warrant its own article, however that is not the article in question which I PRODded. I still don't believe that a standalone article for one edition of the contest when very reliable information about it is available online should continue to be hosted here when any relevant coverage can (and already is) hosted on the parent article. Sims2aholic8 (talk) 14:35, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Sims2aholic8: Since the event took place in 1977, it helps to consider whether an event sponsored by many national broadcasters would have received coverage from reliable sources, based on everything we know about Warsaw Pact societies. My interpretation is that covering the contest would have allowed media in those countries to fill their "good news" quota, and this would continue to be true until the collapse of the Soviet Union. Anyway, I see you've taken the article to AfD. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 14:54, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Intervention with G11s[edit]

Hi Eastmain. It's admirable that you want to save drafts from G11, but I would like to know why you removed a valid tag from a promo piece almost certainly generated by an LLM without changing the offending content. Thanks, Schminnte (talk contribs) 09:47, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the promo tags per your rewrite of the article. Schminnte (talk contribs) 14:35, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

CSD removal[edit]

Hello,

I'm curious as to why you removed a G11 tag on Draft:Sashidhar Jagdishan. The page reads very strongly like UPE spam, and has almost no meaningful content worth keeping (were it to be rewritten). Giraffer (talk·contribs) 14:01, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See above, you're not the only one wondering. Schminnte (talk contribs) 16:40, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Giraffer:, @Schminnte: The CEO of a bank is very likely to be notable. Style issues can be fixed by means other than deletion. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 07:49, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but unambiguous promotion is not a style issue. Perceived notability has nothing to do with whether a page is an obvious advertisement, which should be deleted per G11. Schminnte (talk contribs) 10:05, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Giraffer and Schminnte: I have cleaned up the article from most of the puffery. I am fairly sure the article should both be CSD-proof and notable enough to be in namespace, but to be safe, I will not move it to namespace myself.
I will also note that almost all the sentences remaining in the article have been taken from the puffed up article from before, so clearly it did have meaningful content worth keeping. Soni (talk) 12:55, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Soni, to be clear I was talking about the draft mentioned in the section above. Schminnte (talk contribs) 13:38, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New pages patrol newsletter[edit]

Hello Eastmain,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Learning by teaching[edit]

Hi Eastmain, you helped me 6 years ago, perhaps you can help again! Psansoldo is changing the first sentence of the article "Learning by teaching": "I took away the reference to Jean-Pol Martin as a having originally defined the method, as other people, as Andrew Bell and Joseph Lancaster had already worked and used a similarly defined method before, as cited in the article itself." I think it's not usefull, because I'm the main autor about Learning by teaching since 1980 and everybody quoted my work if writing about "Learning by teaching". What do you mean? Jeanpol (talk) 12:26, 20 December 2023 (UTC) ChatGPT: ""Learning by Teaching" (or "Lernen durch Lehren" in German), as a formalized educational method, was developed by Jean-Pol Martin in the 1980s. Jean-Pol Martin is a German educator and professor who introduced this approach primarily for language teaching. His method emphasizes the role of students as active participants in the learning process, where they take on the role of teachers to instruct their peers. This approach has since gained popularity and has been adapted in various educational settings beyond language learning, due to its effectiveness in enhancing understanding, engagement, and the development of a range of skills in students." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeanpol (talkcontribs) 12:31, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024[edit]

Hello Eastmain,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Hi Eastmain. I knew the Draft:Nisarga Township didn't read promotional but the intent was obviously to promote their own project. Notice

The article Karin Vogel has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence of notability. This is just a lazy Sunday story and was probably no longer true before it was written here,. The line of succession is always on the move as babies are born and existing people in line die.

Velella  Velella Talk   08:19, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Velella: Someone else removed the prod. I think she's still notable. Any babies born since 2011 would be above her in the line of succession, so she's still at the end. Once notable, always notable. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 13:31, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • If the Wall Street Journal writes about someone (particularly on another continent), the person is probably notable. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 13:35, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Karin Vogel for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Karin Vogel is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Karin Vogel until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article until the discussion has finished.
