New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Dennis Brown,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reporting poorly-made RfC discussions

Is there any method for formally making a complaint or a report about an unhelpful or unwarranted RfC discussion? I was opposed to the RfC discussion (at Talk:Donetsk People's Republic) for a number of reasons, including (1) its non-urgency, (2) its poorly arranged options and layout, and (3) the disruptive behaviour of the person who originally made the RfC, as well as that of one of the other commenters. The problem with the RfC is that the two users were trying to present it as the be all and end all, i.e. "we get our way if the vote goes in our favour!". But given that the vote was, for lack of a better term, rigged, and given that there was no real consensus even despite one option being slightly ahead, I was opposed to the interpretation that it should be the be all and end all. Copyvio draft

Hey! I noticed that you deleted Draft:Prap Young as a copyvio. Was there some other source besides Fandom that it's copying from?   • It wasn't attributed properly and already deleted previously for being promotional. The author's been blocked for WP:NOTHERE and I've deleted the draft again. If someone wants to start a proper draft, they are welcome to, but if it is spam and/or copyvio, it will get deleted again. Jussie Smollett

I am baffled that you reverted my edit and claimed that I deleted sources that claimed Smollett is Jewish. There were no sources claiming that on the page to begin with. There was a citation that Smollett's father was Jewish but not one for Jussie. I am guessing you know very little about Judaism but as per the accepted definition you are either born to a Jewish mother or you have a valid conversion. That is not my personal opinion. That's the definition Wikipedia follows. If your father was Jewish you are of Jewish ancestry but not Jewish. I am Jewish by the way. Read this: "Orthodox Judaism and Conservative Judaism follow Jewish law (Halakha), deeming people to be Jewish if their mothers are Jewish or if they underwent a halakhic conversion" (Sellpink (talk) 20:53, 18 March 2023 (UTC))

  • Sellpink, all you have to do is read the title of the citation that you deleted, specifically "'Black Jewish actor Jussie Smollett violently assaulted'". [1]. I have no idea how you missed that. Now revert yourself, take it to the article talk page, because you are edit warring and removing sources in an article. The fact his mother isn't Jewish (I understand how this works, believe it or not) means nothing because we follow the sources. Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

  • Two places to start, one is the WP:Teahouse for questions and answers (best to start there), and the other is WP:Articles for Creation, which is a system that lets you create and flesh out your article with less risk of deletion, as it is created in a draft like space, plus you get feedback from reviewers. Advice about an RM

Hello, sorry to bother you again - you've recently given me some advice about my quarrels with User:My very best wishes. I'm contacting you again for the following reason. In August I filed an RM at Talk:Russian separatist forces in Donbas, which has been recently closed with "no consensus" by a non-involved editor. It was a tough call and a long discussion, with many editors (I think 14 out of 21) !voting in support of the RM and 7 opposing it. I'm not fully convinced about the lack of consensus, and I've started a conversation with the closer. They've been kind and ready to explain and give advice, but I feel that that conversation is not going anywhere and I'm wondering whether asking for a review of the closure would be appropriate here. Note that I've never opened an RM before and I've participated in very few ones, so I lack experience and might well be completely wrong about what a consensus is within the frame of an RM. However.... I think there's a consensus to move, and if there's not, I think the discussion is not over yet and should be re-opened. I'd appreciate if you could have a look at this and give me some advice as to how to proceed, or not to proceed, on the matter. The relevant discussions are the following ones:

  • I'm tight on time, but I did take a cursory look, and the close seem reasonable. One mistake you made is when you started the RM under WP:COMMONNAME you didn't really provide a half dozen links to top shelf sources using that term. It isn't required, but it bolsters your argument. The supports had more "votes", but this isn't a vote. The opposers seemed to have stronger arguments (again, I'm just breezing through the discussion). I would recommend leaving it alone and try again in 3 months, as there isn't any fatal flaw in the close. Honestly, I think Paine Ellsworth handled the discussion on his talk page in a very professional manner, and gave you good reasoning and advice for a future attempt.     Thank you for having found the time to review this. I will follow your advice (which is also the closer's advice) and I will try again in 3 months. Ironically, in the next 3 months the denomination "Russian separatists" might well become entirely appropriate, as DPR and LPR are now in the process of being annexed to Russia (the title, however, will not be appropriate for the period March 2014-February 2022, when the war in Donbass was also a non-international armed conflict between the Ukrainian government and the pro-Russia separatists). I will also follow your advice of providing an extensive review of RS. Note that in some way I had already provided the half dozen links to top shelf sources you mentioned:

  • Amakuru: A very quick looks seems to show the first looks like a ringer, didn't go further (real world busy today), but you really need to file an SPI case and ask a CU to do a sleeper check.   • That was 10 years ago, many things have changed. I would recommend you ask the admin that put the iban in place, or who closed the discussion that put the iban in place if it is ok. I personally think it is ok if you don't interact, or try to counter their arguments, but I am just one person and I"m not sure what the concensus is 10 years later.   • A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. Contentious topics procedure adopted

The Arbitration Committee has concluded the 2021-22 review of the contentious topics system (formerly known as discretionary sanctions), and its final decision is viewable at the revision process page. As part of the review process, the Arbitration Committee has resolved by motion that:

The above proposals that are supported by an absolute majority of unrecused active arbitrators are hereby enacted. The drafting arbitrators (CaptainEek, L235, and Wugapodes) are directed to take the actions necessary to bring the proposals enacted by this motion into effect, including by amending the procedures at WP:AC/P and WP:AC/DS. The authority granted to the drafting arbitrators by this motion expires one month after enactment.

The Arbitration Committee thanks all those who have participated in the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process and all who have helped bring it to a successful conclusion. This motion concludes the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process.

This motion initiates a one-month implementation period for the updates to the contentious topics system. The Arbitration Committee will announce when the initial implementation of the Committee's decision has concluded and the amendments made by the drafting arbitrators in accordance with the Committee's decision take effect. Any editors interested in the implementation process are invited to assist at the implementation talk page, and editors interested in updates may subscribe to the update list.

Ike Awgu for deletion

User Earl Andrew has proven to have a conflict of interest in the article Ike Awgu, even lying about attending the same college. It should be re-nominated for deletion.   • I'm trying to remember where you got the tban (AE I think), so you could do it at ARCA, AN or AE. Keep in mind, each of those has a different body of individuals that may participate, so choose based on where you feel you have the best chance of getting it lifted. To be honest, I have no idea which is better. I lean towards AE simply because it was an AE sanction, but that doesn't mean that is your best choice. IP Davidian

Hi DB. Back in August you blocked 98.231.157.169 for a month due to disruptive editing at Talk:Armenian genocide (here's the section with your block message). They've since been editing as 68.83.217.103 and 37.252.90.66, still manually signing their posts with "Davidian".

They made a new suggestion in January, but they bundled with it some bad-faith assumptions and dredging up of past issues. I posted at their talk page to ask them to decouple their suggestion from the conduct accusations, which they did. After a period of inactivity, they responded today in that same talk page section to add misconduct accusations against Buidhe and myself. It includes a misquote attributed to me, saying that I'd accused them of "bad faith and obscenity", when I'd said "bad-faith assumptions and incivility".

I understand it you'd prefer that I take this to AE, and I'd drop it altogether if you think that's best. I've spent a non-trivial amount of time trying to reason with them, and I'm tired. I could definitely go into "just ignore their posts" mode, which appears to be the approach taken by most of the talk page watchers.   • It is definitely the same person, but the block expired and they are allowed to participate. From what I see, their partition isn't breaking WP:DE at this point, and they are staying on topic without straying too far into other policy issues. Their method of participation isn't necessarily the most conducive to getting changes, but I'm not a critic of style. I would say keep an eye out, and if it ventures into personal attacks, casting aspersions or simple disruption, then something can be considered, but at this point, I don't see a pattern of problems. Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Vassal Benford Page removal

You voted that the Vassal Benford website had copyright infringement within his bio, which resulted in the wiki page being removed, but i want to request that you un-deleted this page.

You can search the name throughout wikipedia and see that he is tagged to many different songs and projects, and its imparitive that we have the page relisted as our social impact and profile is being greatly effected by this action.

Please let me know what we need to do to clear this up as we have not posted anything on our website that was not directly related or created by Vassal himself.

We would like to disuss this action and you may reach out to our lawyer Ronald Lebow if needed on any issues or concerns that need addressed.

If we dont hear from you within 5 days we must pursue with our legal team to contact you direct.

Hi Dennis.

I just stopped by to note a couple of things.

So, recently a certain website not worth linking to was mentioned on some talk page. I don't think I've looked at that site in years - probably was related to some arb case or something.

So I read through the (long) thread and once done, on a whim I searched for my username on the site. Not much, though there was one thread that made me smile and laugh. In the thread (which was about some proposal I opposed at some point in the past), you made a couple comments.

So, first, I wanted to let you know: Due to our past interactions you have gained my respect. We haven't always agreed on things, quite the reverse sometimes, but your comments and some discussions we've had, and also that you "walk the walk" of your words (which says more about someone than what they merely say). I also respect how you are willing to work with Wikipedia newbies - at the "teahouse" or where ever.

Anyway, so, because of past discussions, this page is on my watchlist (along with many others), and so when I saw someone give you kudos that were well-deserved, I thought I'd comment. I'm sorry if my appearance confused you.

Besides that, I laughed at being called "excitable" : )

I guess when I see something worth participating in, I join in. But, over the last several years, I've generally avoided adding the ubiquitous "me too". So I guess when I do decide to join in, perhaps I look excitable : )

And finally, yes, I do things "manually". My few forays into trying out automated tools just hasn't gone very far (check out the contributions of User:jc377 - which was created to try out AWB), either due to it seeming more effort than just doing it myself, or because the automation doesn't do what I need it to do. My most recent look was at category tools like hotcat. Nice-ish, I guess, but I turned it back off.

C'est la vie. Maybe one of these days I'll go look into awb again. I don't know if I even recall that account's password lol

Anyway, sorry for the length, but just wanted to let you know that you are respected at least by one Wikipedian (not that that matters much, I suppose), and that you gave me a smile today.

  • I appreciate the kind words, more than you might know. We've often been "debate opponents" on issues, but we both knew that each had the best interests of enwp at heart. If nothing else, this forced us to prove our positions and strengthen them. But I've always respected your opinions as well. None of us has all the right answers, and the best solution is usually found if you can first have vigorous but civil debate, and we have. So I'm grateful for that. And yes, I'm a little more of a hard ass than excitable, but it takes all kinds to reach the real goal: creating the best experience for the reader.

I've been working on this for two years, dreaming of it for 20. I had a short list for years, but in the end, the Philippines won out, for English language usage and first and foremost, the people. Extended-confirmed protection of Lara Trump

Hello, Dennis. I hope that you're well. I saw your response at RfPP ("it was a series of BLP violations that were serious enough that they required hiding the history, so in my judgement, that was the appropriate level of protection to guarantee the various IPS would not come back in a couple of days") to Mdaniels5757 regarding your year-long extended-confirmed protection of Lara Trump. I think this confusion was understandable, as your log summary refers to "(auto)confirmed accounts" (probably a pre-loaded summary from Twinkle?).

As someone who is familiar with CalebHughes, I think that extended-confirmed is not necessary at all because a) Caleb does not bother with getting accounts to autoconfirmed to do BLP violations and b) use of extended-confirmed should not be based on whether the information was deletable. It should be used when there is actually disruption from autoconfirmed accounts, and this did not occur. I'm therefore requesting that you reduce it to semi-protection, please.   • I disagree. In my opinion, my actions are clearly within administrative discretion. BLP violations of this type are pretty serious, and I used my best judgement to use what I felt was a balanced protection that allowed almost everyone to edit, while doing the primary job, which is protecting the person who is the subject of the BLP. Had this been simple vandalism, that might be a different discussion, but it isn't. As per the larger discussion, it isn't required that any other article has the same protection, btw. Respectfully, Dennis, I'm struggling to reconcile the view that the escalation to extended-confirmed without disruption from autoconfirmed accounts is discretionary with the actual policy, which says that it isn't. I absolutely agree that these BLP violations are serious, but we as administrators are bound by the decisions of the Community and I don't believe than an IAR action here would actually improve the encyclopaedia.     Hi Sdrqaz. How do you think Wikipedia:Protection policy#Discretionary usage plays into this? Wouldn't this sort of article, sitting at the intersection of at least two designated contentious topic areas, fit into that pocket of admin discretion?     I would say that if an administrator wishes to protect an article as arbitration enforcement, they should invoke it explictly (I don't think that that is controversial). In a hypothetical scenario, if an administrator carries out an action and it gets contested, it would be exceptionally poor if they retroactively upgrade it to an AE action. In my opinion, AE uses of extended-confirmed protection make a lot more sense if it's because the extended-confirmed restriction exists in that area. Another valid use (where reasonable) would be if the administrator wants to impose a longer protection than is usually warranted (for example, this article saw disruption over a two-day period – I would have probably protected it for at most a week). The use of AE to "skip" over a protection level in non-ECR areas is unusual and I do not support it. Sdrqaz (talk) 02:58, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

    More of a clarification than a change. If a change is "controversial", then obviously the place to go is WP:AN, and always has been. My notice (which was just put back up a few days ago) is more about historical things, like unblocking editors that "get it" from a year ago, etc. The purpose of my statement is/was to say that simple things that fall under IAR or I obviously wouldn't have a problem with, can just be done without waiting for me to reply, particularly since I'm often gone for days or weeks.   • It has been, check the existing sources. In fact, that 5000 is an older source (don't ask which, this was two years ago) but I searched for many hours looking for a better source, but one did not exist. So, I've already put in the time to find better sourcing, and the best sourcing IS 5000. So the burden isn't on me, as I've already done due diligence. Check the history. Mhorg and Russia-related topics

Greetings, can you please advice regarding Mhorg (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) edits. The editor adds [6] [7] misleading info into articles (discussed here Talk:Russian invasion of Ukraine#500,000 Ukrainian military killed or seriously wounded ) and reinstates it after it was removed [8] . The editor is busy with some reverts at other articles - Ivan Katchanovski and 2022 Nord Stream pipeline sabotage - which I haven't investigated and have no info if reverts are right or wrong. The editor prefers a journalist article instead of an academic researcher as an RS Talk:Azov Brigade/Archive 11#c-Mhorg-20230614141100-Manyareasexpert-20230614120900 (It seems that what Golikin claims is verifiable, while what Shekhovtsov says is just his opinion). Regarding the first point, it is related to at least 3 Ukrainian sources:
Focus[9]: ""30 thousand a month": Lutsenko calls for voicing Ukraine's losses in the war and gives figure (video)"
TodayUA[10]: "Lutsenko said that the AFU loses 30 thousand people a month: "Ukrainians deserve this truth"."
Antikor[11]: "Ex-Prosecutor General Lutsenko says Ukraine loses 30,000 military killed and wounded per month"
The statement quoted in these articles is as follows: "We need to be honest: the 500,000 they are talking about now, if you divide it by months - that's 30,000 a month. And then we will roughly understand what is happening at the front. In terms of dead and seriously wounded. And we need to tell people the truth, I am sure: Ukrainians deserve this truth," the former MP said."
I misinterpreted the question of the 500,000, it would not be the total dead but the number of people to be mobilised. However, the former minister also speaks clearly of the 30,000 deaths per month (note how all the headlines empathise with this). I did not reverted the "500,000" part, only the factual part of the 30,000. Mhorg (talk) 20:30, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

G4 deletion of Paul Laviolette

Dennis,

I'm looking at the version of Paul Laviolette at the time that it was speedied, and also the versions at Paul LaViolette at the time they were nominated for deletion (2nd nomination, 3rd nomination) and actually deleted (2nd nomination, 3rd nomination).

I don't think that this was a valid WP:G4, as there were substantial differences between the versions that were deleted at AfD and the version that was speedied. I genuinely think this was re-created de novo, 14ish years after the article was most recently taken to AfD. And some of the sources in the speedied article (e.g. the paper " Scientific Misconduct: Three Forms that Directly Harm Others as the Modus Operandi of Mill’s Tyranny of the Prevailing Opinion") were published after the most recent deletion discussion.

There are some copyproblems with the article content (copy-pasting from the aforementioned paper, for example), but I don't think they rise to a WP:G12 level, either. There are also some problems with a good bit of uncited material. But I don't think this warrants a speedy inasmuch as it warrants draftification and removal of the copyproblem. Through that lens, are you willing to restore the article to draftspace, sans the "censorship" section? — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 05:14, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

Since you are familiar with the copyright issues, I will leave that to you, rather than try to fix it myself, as I'm a bit short of time to comb through it right now. I'm noticing that there are some potential WP:PSCI-related issues in the draft, so I am going to keep an eye on it as it develops.
