serious today, no food - Gidon Kremer played a Vorgabe (before the concert), a violin solo, Requiem (2014) by Igor Loboda, dedicated to the victims of the Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation, and the group played the usual encore, by a Ukrainian whose name I didn't understand. I tried to explain: it's a play on the word "Zugabe" = encore, lit. "added gift". It was added before the official program, after two speeches, then Schubert, then two more speeches by students of the Kronberg Academy, then the rest of the program. I was a bit hesitant, one thing saying this as almost the only thing about him, the other that he was more prominent for having been instrumental in the dismissal of the infamous Bishop of Limburg. Reverting move

Hi, i see you did a revert here. Your edit summary said that one user asked you to do it because there was an ongoing discussion.

In fact i started that discussione and the user who forwarded the request to you was the only one against it ( and the only one expressing himself until today) based on specious argument, first calling WP:COMMON and then backtracing it when results went against his personal preference. You can see it by yourself on the [wikiproject talk page]. In those days no other user partecipated in the discussion, so following WP policy and objective result on the popularity name i proceeded to make the move.

Over and over wikipedia policy reminds their users to give valid arguments over changes/edits and that discussions are not votes. Also not to go against wikipedia policy and to follow WP:COMMON when choosing the title of an article.

I suggest you to reconsider your decision now that you have a more clear grasp of the situation, or to elaborate further your rationales behind it, if i didn't fairly represent it in this message. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Opencross (talk • contribs) 17:05, 5 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Opencross! Thanks for the message. My move was essentially just correcting the word "Championsip" to "Championship" in the title. Since your initial move to 's-Hertogenbosch Open has been contested by another editor, and with limited participation at the WikiProject discussion, you should start a Requested Move discussion on the talk page by following the steps at WP:RSPM. A bot will then add a notification at the top of the page and at Wikipedia:Requested moves so that more editors can discuss the proposed move, and you can also notify WT:TENNIS of the discussion. After a week or so (sometimes more if productive discussion is ongoing), someone will close the discussion and evaluate whether there is consensus for the proposed move. I have done the RM before, i thought this move was uncontroversial given the WP policy i was following, i was just pre-informing the project as courtesy for all editors participating, given that the page is a current event.. I'm sorry to bother you, but i would like if you could take a close look at what it's happening on this article's talk page.
It seems very irregular to me that someone who is not an admin, go ahead and close an RM skipping all the steps to close it mentioned on the template page, and move the discussion back to the talk page of the project, (the opposite of what you too suggested to me to do, which i did, leaving also a message saying the discussion can continue on the talk page of the article). This is the same user this afternoon reverted my page move, too. I think he's kind of thinking he "owns" that page to the point of using his knowledge of wiki templates to make questionable choices which i don't know if he has the right to (can someone who is not an admin move a RM??), to the effect of resulting a disruptive editor. I repeat i have never ever seen anyone moving a RM to a different talk page, so pardon me if i'm mistaken on this, but i think i was right moving it to an RM, because that would go in the way of having a discussion and buiding consensum and also will have, usually, an outside admin who will look the RM and will close it, a very different procedures of asking casually for comments on the talk page of the project. It's startling to see someone forcing his way using a forumshop template to justify it, i think some admin should take a good look at the whole situation which is, in my view, clearly out of control. I think the action was taken in good faith (an attempt to redirect the existing RM banner to the WT:TENNIS talk page), but led to a technical glitch where the RM bot removed both the banner and the discussion listing. Opencross is telling things here that are just not true. Firstly, I’m not the only one opposing them. There are three editors already disagreeing with them in the WP:TENNIS discussion. They are actually currently the only one supporting the move. Secondly, I have no feeling of owning anything at all. As you explained already, I executed nothing but a technical closure of one talk page discussion so as to allow the actual RM to occur where discussion of the move was actually already happening. I would appreciate it if Opencross would stop these continuous accusations of bad faith against me.Tvx1 10:17, 6 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi DrVogel, I saw that initial request and was kind of on the fence – there was a unanimously opposed RM in 2016 proposing a move to Indus Valley tradition, but no one really talked about the capitalisation of "Civilisation". I think the combination of the article being a former FA, a level-3 vital article, one covered by the IPA discretionary sanctions, and a talk page with 967 watchers probably meant that someone would probably object at some point But I see where you were coming from, and the reason for declining the initial request wouldn't have been as clear-cut compared to some other requests at RM/TR. ANYONE (band) page under attack

Hi Dan - The page ANYONE (band) is under attack by Issac Denwood who joined wikipedia a few hours ago and has contributed nothing but attacks to the ANYONE page. It seems the account was created specifically to attack the page. In addition to removing all but one of the pictures (claiming they are 'self promotional'?), he has removed entire sections of the article (all well cited with links) and has even nominated it for immediate deletion. I previously removed the template because they had mistakenly added one meant for user talk pages, so the page is not currently up for deletion. By the way, I wouldn't really call the previous "Critical Acclaim" section "well cited" – it was almost entirely sourced to anyoneden.net. DanCherek (talk) 16:07, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Can we put the section back up and simply direct the citations directly to the source? also, taking down all but one photo because they are 'self promotion'?? every site we referenced has numerous photos. Alright, well, you should not have been editing the article directly in the first place, and you need to declare your status as a paid editor according to WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY — that means disclosing the relationship on your user page, on the talk page of the article, or in your edit summaries. This disclosure is required by Wikipedia's terms of use. Be sure to read the policies and guidelines on paid editing and conflicts of interest. Once you have reviewed the conflict of interest guidelines, I recommend suggesting any future edits that you'd like to make on the talk page of the article, using edit requests (you may find the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard helpful). And please stop describing the other editor's edits as attacks – they raised some evidently valid concerns. I'll put some more information on your talk page about this. I certainly intend to follow all rules, although I must admit I might not know them all. our intent is simply to keep the page up to date with basic facts, like the release of a new album. The new user 'Issac Denwood' who has been a member for a few hours removed that section entirely? I put it back up with solid citations for EVERY sentence, citations form the AP - associated press etc. This user also deleted all but one photographs. Hello DanCherek,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Request of guidance on attribution of translations

Hello Mr Cherek. Yesterday you were kind enough to give me some guidance on attribution. Thank you! I was unaware of this need.

I have also used information from other wikis, specifically kiswahili wikipedia, and was wondering how to attribute it properly? In the few times I have done this I added a translation tag on the talk page with the wiki and page link to it. I have never added any attributions into my edit summary as you guided me yesterday.

Is there a more proper way to do this? Any templates like you gave me for the english wiki attributions?

Hi BevoLJ, thanks for asking. WP:TFOLWP has more information about this. Providing attribution for translated material is similar to attribution for copying within Wikipedia. An easy way to do it is to use an edit summary like this: Translating from [[:fr:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution.
If you want to go back and fix some unattributed translations, just make a small edit to the page with an edit summary like this:Content was translated from [[:fr:Exact name of French article]] on 21 June 2022; see its history for attribution. so that it's clear when the translation occurred (replace the example date with the actual one). 12Stone Copyvio Revdel

I saw that you put a copyvio-revdel tag on 12Stone due to this edit, but I did want to point out that the IP only re-added the content, the offending copyvio has been part of the article since it's creation, and I only noticed and removed it on June 22. I don't know if or how it should be addressed since I know little about copyvio history deletion, but I thought I would point that the copyvio problem goes throughout the entire history of the article. - Aoidh (talk) 19:43, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Thanks! I saw that but I am usually reluctant to request revision deletion for so many edits, stretching back for more than a decade, because it hides so many intervening edits. It does make the revdel request a bit less meaningful, though, I agree, but hopefully it can help deter the content from being added again in the future. Thanks for catching it in the first place. The truth is, as I scrolled through the changes you had made, there was altogether too much material I felt had no place in the article, and it would have taken too much work on my part to selectively remove individual changes you had made. There is no need to add the type of excessive linking that you made to the article, as per WP:OVERLINK. In addition, some of the content you wrote, for example, regarding Brahm's education, does not bear much relevance to the article topic, especially as it relates more to the school itself, so that doesn't need to be there. It doesn't need a copyright notice to be protected by copyright, so please stop copying text from other websites to Wikipedia (you have done this on several articles now). THAT's EXACTLY the point: something has to be CREATIVE, but scientific statements are rarely creative, they are just facts. Hence, in practically all cases courts have rejected copyright violations as long as they are just statements or limited to a sentence or two. I happen to have read two books about copyright. You recently reverted several changes I made to the page titled "Fourth, fifth, and sixth derivatives of position." The reason for making these changes was the following statement that appears on said page:

"Unlike the first three derivatives, the higher-order derivatives rarely appear, and have little practical use..."

which is not only untrue, it is also disparaging toward a topic of active research in the dynamics community. The uses of higher-order derivatives are being investigated, and it appears that they *do* have practical uses. I was trying to address this untrue claim with illustrative examples from the literature. While I was at it, I also edited several related pages. I see those changes have been reverted as well.

Hi! There were several issues with your edits. They were copied in part from this Springer article which is not compatibly licensed, and collectively the edits seemed to be made for the purpose of excessively increasing citations to Sanders' publications. If you have a conflict of interest regarding this – which appears to be the case – you should read the WP:COI guidelines carefully and then suggest any edits you want to make on the talk pages of articles (for example, at Talk:Fourth, fifth, and sixth derivatives of position) with a properly disclosed conflict of interest. No, the edits were not copied from the article; they were paraphrased in my own words. As I said, I was trying to use examples from the literature to illustrate that there *are* practical uses of higher-order derivatives, and Sanders's work is a prime example. I see now that there was already a discussion about the strong language I referred to ("little practical use"), so I am not the only one who thinks this ought to be changed. I just found this on the Wikipedia guidelines under "Follow the normal protocol":
When you find a passage in an article that is biased, inaccurate, or unsourced the best practice is to improve it if you can rather than deleting salvageable text. For example, if an article appears biased, add balancing material or make the wording more neutral. Include citations for any material you add. If you do not know how to fix a problem, ask for help on the talk page.
To help other editors understand the reasoning behind your edits, always explain your changes in the edit summary. If an edit is too complex to explain in an edit summary, or the change is contentious, add a section to the talk page that explains your rationale. Be prepared to justify your changes to other editors on the talk page. If you are reverted, continue to explain yourself; do not start an edit war.
Allow me to continue to explain myself. All I did was add content with citations, as is common practice and as is instructed above. There was no copyright violation or conflict of interest, other than addressing problematic language that had already been flagged on the talk page. It seems to me that the resolution here is not to revert my edits, but to improve them by adding balancing material.

Look, I am happy to remove the copyright violation, even if they aren't any, if you give me a few minutes. Just to let you know: factual statements are NOT COPYRIGHT protected, hence they can be copied without violating any copyright. In addition, if you BELIEVE there is a violation, please be specific, because there may be a half sentence or two that would may be "creative" and thus protected, but that can usually be fixed by changing a word or two, which is exactly what I willing to. Hello: I was flagged several times for a copyright violation for adding information to the biography of New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Joseph Weintraub Joseph Weintraub - Wikipedia

The information came from a website maintained by the New Jersey Courts. I work for the New Jersey Courts and have been asked to maintain the Wikipedia pages of our former chief justices, so I used the information from our website and pasted it to Wikipedia.

Since you work for the New Jersey Courts, you'll need to provide the proper disclosure according to WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY — that usually means disclosing the relationship on your user page. That doesn't matter. Unless the original work was released under a licence compatible with Wikipedia's (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 and GNU Free Document Licence) or is already public domain we cannot use it as both of those licences are (1) incompatible with Berne-standard all-rights-reserved copyright and (2) irrevocable once declared. You'll notice that greencarcongress.com copied the info from the GM press release. So, there is no copyright issue here whatsoever which is why I put back what you deleted. You can't copy from press releases either, unless they have been explicitly released by the copyright owner into either the public domain or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. There is nothing in the sentences in question that can be copyrighted because it is just basic factual information which is in the public domain. There is nothing secret or proprietary about it. It is simply stating facts and reporting information. However, I have reworked the wording so it is not word for word copied from the press release and I added some additional information that has come about since the press release was published. I don't believe this was necessary but this revision should cover any remaining concerns. for I saw that the articles were deleted from the wiki, several times as you can see yourself (HERE), and suddenly mysteriously appears here in the English wikipedia, I believe that by not being accepted in the Portuguese the same editor is trying to put it here in en.wiki, and being quite honest, these articles seem not to be meeting the criteria of notoriety. RIA Pakistan to Ghana?

I really appreciate your attempted WP:RIA advice added to the edit history of Demographics of Ghana in this edit. It's nice to know I'm not the only one paying attention to such things (see here, for example). Otoh, I was a bit confused by your edit summary, which provided an attribution statement for content copied from Demographics of Pakistan; how could this added content containing several decades of Ghanaian vital statistics have come from an article about Pakistan? Am I missing something? (As a sidebar, you may have received a reversion notification about a subsequent edit of mine; this edit was directed at the addition of numeric data to the table which was unsourced, and had nothing to do with your edit, which was collateral damage; but since the whole point was the RIA in the summary history, I didn't think the undo of the dummy edit itself actually mattered one way or the other; nevertheless, my apologies for the undo notif, which has nothing to do with your edit.) That was simply attribution for the sentences In July 2022, the United Nations published its 2022 World Population Prospects, a biennially-updated database where key demographic indicators are estimated and projected worldwide down to the country level. They prepared the following estimates of demographic indicators in Ghana for every year from 1950 to 2021, as well as projections for future decades. which were definitely derived from the Pakistan article. Not the biggest deal, but enough to get flagged at CopyPatrol (which is where I noticed and dealt with it). Hope that makes sense! DanCherek (talk) 01:23, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
Ah, so not the data included in the large edit of 13 July which was mentioned in your RIA, but rather the intro sentence about the UN publishing a 2022 database; got it. In that case, I think the RIA statement as given actually does not work in the way intended; because the unattributed edit in fact contained about 7kb of numeric demographic data about Ghana (with, by the way and not relevant to the RIA issue, a source that did not, in fact, support that data—hence my later revert). However, by adding an unqualified RIA, you appeared to be implying that Pakistan article editors were responsible for the numeric content that made up 90% of the content of that edit, rather than merely the sentence or two about the UN publishing its database. I think that doesn't conform to the spirit of copyright or RIA; I probably would have been much more explicit, something like: "[[WP:RIA|RIA notice]]: The previous edit of 18:27, 13 July 2022 [[WP:CWW|copied material]] taken in part from [[Demographics of Pakistan]], from "In July 2022..." to "... for future decades." See that article's history for attribution." (It fits; I checked.) In fact, I had assumed that your RIA was targeting the numeric data about Ghana, which is what confused me. Copyrights on Draft:The Houston Tidelanders

I've added "{{connected contributor}}" to the article as I'm the website administrator for the Houston Tidelanders. One reason I created this Wikipedia page is that I want to see the history of the Tidelanders preserved in more than one location. There are pieces of information on the Wikipedia page that aren't on the website and I did my best to condense, paraphrase, or present information differently. We own the copyright to the history listed on the website. I expect the differences to grow when our official historian has time to edit and add to the page. I can assure you that the information contained is historically accurate as far as I know as condensed from of our original historical documents. W.H. Anderson's observations is a direct quote from what I understand (I changed it to a quote".

The history of the BHS (aka SPEBSQSA) that I listed is a conglomeration of facts from multiple sources (the Tidelanders, the BHS, and another website that I found a tidbit of history from) but it's very condensed. I am disappointed at what I consider the rather aggressive way you have handled this. The website I used as a source was evidently set up originally in part to encourage tourism and the contribution it could make to the local economy, and I carried out extensive edits to remove the florid elements and change the tone to a much simpler and more encyclopedic style. It seems to me that the result was not in violation of copyright rules, but this is naturally a matter of opinion.

I do not, of course, dispute the right of reviewers to police copyright rules, but I would like to see a more consensual approach. I can see that where there are flagrant issues such as potentially libellous statements about living persons then immediate action is needed, but in a case like this I think it would be more appropriate, rather than immediately to mutilate the work that contributors have done, to raise your issues with them and listen to their point of view. There are further background issues in this case, such as the fact that the original webpage was archived, and that its authorship was clearly by a voluntary community organisation concerned to encourage tourism, an objective which would only be advanced by the inclusion of further details on Wikipedia. I might mention that I have no personal connection or interest with the community involved; I simply stumbled across the article by accident and felt that the original authors had missed an obvious trick.

However, now that you have destroyed the work I did I am not going to waste time trying to make additional drafting changes to meet your objections. The community involved will have to make do without this little advertisement. Deipnosophista (talk) 11:04, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

Sorry to hear that you feel that way. In some cases I rewrite the infringing material; in others I leave it up to the original contributor. The archiving of the source web page and that it was written by volunteers doesn't really affect the obligation to sufficiently paraphrase the material for Wikipedia, because we assert that anyone can share, distribute, transmit, and adapt the content we add to Wikipedia, even commercially. That's not something that the copyright holders have agreed to for the content that they've produced. I disagree that the removal of copyright violations from articles constitutes "mutilation". Good catch – the removed text, which has been present since the article was created in 2012, seems to have been lifted directly from the EUMWA source. Your rewrite looks pretty good; the remaining Earwig overlap was mostly proper nouns (like names of institutions), but I did a little more rewriting just in case. Since it has been removed, I think we're good to go here. I noted the copyvio removal in an edit summary as well as on the talk page (Talk:Seán Scanlan#Copyright problem removed) so that it will hopefully stay out of the article in the future. If you are the copyright holder of an image or file and you're okay with that, please see Help:Files for a more detailed guide on uploading and using image files (most likely the image will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and then it can be used here).
In other cases, if the image you wish to upload is not under a free license, but meets all of Wikipedia's fair use criteria, then it can be uploaded directly to the English Wikipedia (not Wikimedia Commons) with a fair use rationale. This can apply to things like book or album covers, movie posters, etc. But, please note that you will only be able to locally upload a non-free file on your own after you are autoconfirmed, which happens after you've been registered for four days and have made at least 10 edits.

Hi Emstuandsoforth and welcome to Wikipedia. There are a couple concerns here:
  1. You appear to be writing about your own company. That is an example of a conflict of interest (COI) editing and you will need to provide a required disclosure about your connection to the company before proceeding further. There's already a message on your talk page detailing how to do that and the community expectations that come with a COI.
  2. Your username seems to imply shared use of the account ("Em Stu AndSoForth"). Wikipedia's username policy disallows usernames that imply shared access, because usernames should not be shared between more than one individual. I would suggest visiting Special:GlobalRenameRequest to request a new username that avoids this issue.
Though the two concerns above take precedence, I will briefly point out that in accordance with the naming conventions for article titles, we usually don't put titles in all-caps for stylization. A couple days ago, I started working on CopyPatrol after becoming aware of it through your RfA (which I am glad to see is going swimmingly), and I wanted to ask for your feedback on this case which I handled. I removed the copyright-violating text and instructed the editor that material must be presented in one's own words; the copyvio has since been revdel'd by an admin. The editor presented a re-phrased version of the material in question: the abstract of the journal which is the subject of the article. While I personally was satisfied with the re-wording, part of me is wondering if it still falls afoul of close paraphrasing due to the structural similarity between the article section as it currently stands, and the abstract. In addition, there was some awkward wording ("Of particular interest are investigations that investigate") and some sentences that didn't actually really mean anything when you read them more closely. The editor's username also suggests that they have a significant conflict of interest with respect to the journal, so I've left a note on their talk page about that. After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.

Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.

Of the 14 unique citations in that draft, 3 of them gave me a "Sorry, the page you're looking for cannot be found" message so I was unable to evaluate those. 7 are just links to his music (like Apple Music), and those don't contribute to the case for notability at all because the sources aren't independent and they don't contain significant coverage of Shelem. Of the remaining citations, the NPR one is better, but the TED talk video, his TEDx bio, and the local news interview again don't really constitute significant coverage in reliable and independent sources. Congratulations on your successful RFA!
Carrying on a tradition, allow me to impart the words of wisdom I received from Katie after my RFA passed almost seven long, exhausting, and questionable years ago:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version. (I got nothing here. It's inevitable.)
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. Without exception, you will pick the wrong one to do. (See #5.)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll. (You'll attract many more of those now, because mop. They must like to drink the dirty water in the bucket.)
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block, because really, what else is there to live for?
  5. Remember that when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology. It will not be a personal attack because we are admins and, therefore, we are all rouge anyway.
  6. Finally, remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Thanks for your interest. I have some concerns, though, about relatively recent copyright issues (like the CCI) and the fact that we seemed to have some difficulty communicating in this conversation. (I am still not sure whether you were saying you copied those episode summaries or not.) For those reasons I recommend spending some time getting experience in other areas of Wikipedia before working in copyright cleanup, which can be tricky to navigate. Hi Kyle, your page was deleted because it contained promotional text copied verbatim from [4]. Just because you haven't cited something as a source doesn't mean you can copy from it freely – it's still a violation of our copyright policy because the text hasn't been released under a compatibly free license. It looks like you are looking to advertise yourself, which is not permitted on Wikipedia. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged — see our guideline on autobiographies. This is because it is difficult to write a neutral, verifiable autobiography, and there are many pitfalls.   • Congratulations, Dan! Great to have you on board with tools at your disposal. My only advice is to NEVER be reluctant to ask another admin for their opinion on decisions you are uncertain about. I became an admin in 2015 and there are admins I still go to on subjects I'm less well-versed on, like templates and files. Whatever the area of admining, there are probably half a dozen admins who work on that area on a regular basis and it's often best to run a situation by them, mention how you plan on handling the situation and ask them what they think. I am not getting why you deleted it. The AfD was more than 1 year ago and most of the participants who voted for "Delete" wrongly predicted that the subject won't get any coverage after the controversy that was going on at the time. All of this has been proven wrong and the subject is still getting coverage.[5][6] It is not even uncommon to re-create the article once the subject has gained more notability. A similar example would be this article which was created less than 2 months after the AfD[7] because the subject was more notable now.

It will absolutely end up being kept if an AfD is ever initiated. You should restore the article and its talk page. --Yoonadue (talk) 04:18, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

It looks like you copied and pasted 90% of the article from the deleted version, which breaks our attribution requirements for the dozens of editors who contributed to the article before the AfD. For example, <ref name="nyt1904">{{cite definition}}</ref> The next time you want to cite the same source, you just call the ref's name, like this: <ref name="nyt1904" /> Note the closing slash. Cascade de Soulou

Hey DanCherek. First off, congratulations on your successful RFA.

You declined my histmerge request on Cascade de Soulou with the reasoning of "a histmerge is not needed here as the content in both pages was added by the same editor, so there are no attribution issues that need to be repaired". The creation of the main article is currently attributed to me when it should be attributed to the other editor. I'm only listed as the creator because I draftified the original article, which left behind a redirect with a G2 CSD tag, and they pasted the content before the CSD could be reviewed. I'm new to requesting histmerge, so I won't be at all surprised if I'm wrong, but isn't this part of the reason that histmerges are done? Hey man im josh (talk) 22:40, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Hey man im josh, thanks for the message! It's not really a big deal that you are technically listed as the "page creator" (you might accidentally get templated if someone uses Twinkle to nominate the page for deletion, but that's okay). The important part is that anyone looking at the page history – and this diff specifically – can tell that Glordimes, the original contributor, added the content that is currently in the article. That's what I meant by "no attribution issues".
The following is an example where a histmerge would be needed: Glordimes creates the page, you draftify it, then I come along and paste the draft contents over the redirect. In that case, it would look like I was the one who wrote that text, which isn't okay. Hope that makes sense – let me know if you have any questions! DanCherek (talk) 22:49, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
Just when I thought I was starting to understand histmerge. A similar merge happened earlier today with the same user at Draft:Poaching in Mayotte, though I understand that merge may have taken place because an admin may have also believed the page should be in a draft, whereas Cascade de Soulou is technically in better shape. There are different approaches to history merges, for sure. And if it's an ambiguous situation, it's good to tag the page so an administrator can evaluate it and decide whether it's necessary. I learned a lot about when to request one from Primefac's comments at the AfC talk page, where the topic of histmerges regularly comes up – for example, at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation#Another Specific Question. Regarding Draft:Cascade de Soulou: it's very close to a page blanking, so a CSD G7 would probably have been fine, but I've opted to simply redirect it to the mainspace article as redirects are cheap and this keeps the page history visible to non-admins.
