September 2022[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm XtraJovial. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, British Rail Class 810, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. XtraJovial (talkcontribs) 00:31, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A cookie for you![edit]

Thanks for your recent edits to the rail station pages! BTW, are you a member/participant of the UK Railways Wikiproject? Be good to see you around there more, if you're not already a member. Thanks once again! Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 19:38, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! I just noticed that information on a few pages was out of date, so I decided to rectify it, and no I am not part of that wikiproject. Class444SWRail (talk) 19:42, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again. I would encourage you to add yourself as a member (although, of course, I'm not going to force you to ) to join some like-minded editors who are interested in much the same topics. Of course, if you do need any help with anything - although it looks like you've already got the hang of the service tables, probably the most difficult part! - please do ask. Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 19:51, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for joining the project as a member. Odd username (but each to their own!). Can't say I ever got excited riding on a Class 444, which I have done a couple of times, even post-refurb. What is it about them that makes you such a fan? 10mmsocket (talk) 21:14, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Well, for me it’s because they’re the trains I’ve grown up with, whenever I’d go to London I’d always be on a class 444, and therefore I’ve got quite fond memories of them Class444SWRail (talk) 05:01, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
I would recommend checking before reverting, Wilts & Dorset no longer operates any buses under that name, and hasn’t for a full decade, I am sorry that I didn’t provide any references, I was in a bit of a rush, and was expecting to add them later when I had time Class444SWRail (talk) 08:01, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Named services in service tables[edit]

We do not include known named services in service tables. If it's included in the service table, the one special service is not noted for the same redundancy reason (i.e. King's Cross to Aberdeen is noted as 3 trains per day instead of 4 as the extra 4th service is the Northern Lights service). February 2024[edit]

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment, or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 21:33, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Class444SWRail,
Please return and sign all deletion nominations you have made. Editors shouldn't need to go into the page history to see who made a deletion nomination. Always add your signature to any comments that aren't in Article space. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 21:35, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I thought it would have done so automatically, didn’t know how it worked. Will do so now. Class444SWRail (talk) 14:12, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Distances on UK railways[edit]

You may not be aware, but on the railways of the United Kingdom the law requires there to be distance markers at intervals along one side of the track or the other, they show the official distance measured along the railway from some datum point. On the National Rail system they are at intervals of a quarter of a mile. They were surveyed some time ago, usually when a railway was ready for opening, and are generally not resurveyed when a route is altered or a station is closed - if this were necessary, a resurvey would be necessary almost every year. Official mileages are easily verified from well-researched publications such as

  • Padgett, David (June 2018) [1989]. Munsey, Myles (ed.). Railway Track Diagrams 3: Western & Wales (6th ed.). Frome: Trackmaps. ISBN 978-1-9996271-0-2.

The information at Brouter apparently comes from OpenStreetMap, which is a user-generated website - which goes against WP:UGC. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 18:04, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am aware of the legality and such, but I do not believe that it is very useful for people today to be adhering solely to routes that are often not used, if even in existence anymore. I believe that the actual distance taken by the fastest service should be displayed, at the very least alongside the official distance.
I understand the source I was attempting to use is not up to standards, and I will not use it in future. But I maintain that the actual distance taken by trains in the modern day is more useful than that of routes that may not even exist anymore Class444SWRail (talk) 18:26, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The "fastest service" is subject to change, as often as twice a year. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, which should consider the long-term situation, and stay away from recentism. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:26, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The service itself does, but the route rarely does. All of the fastest services between London Paddington and Cardiff Central, for example, have operated via the Severn Tunnel since its opening, and all of the fastest services between London Paddington and Penzance have operated via Westbury. Besides that, it is not even possible to operate a service via Plymouth Millbay for example, as the site is occupied by what I believe is now a leisure centre, you’d have a real job on your hands operating trains through that. I accept the idea of recentism, but this is not an example of it, given this has been the case for most peoples’ entire lifetimes now Class444SWRail (talk) 10:09, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
