Shield volcano

Need some advice with this article. I'm frankly unsure where to go with it, or how to organize it. What do you think would be the best division of sections? I'm aiming to get a GA out of it. ResMar 04:06, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

No, Cer, there aren't. The AVO has done an amazing job digitalizing most of what's been said about Cleveland. I actually e-mailed them, and they basically said "if it's not there, it probably doesn't exist". I'll wager that all of the sources on the page have nothing longer then a short blurb. You'll notice that only 1 of the sources mentions Cleveland directly (it's used in the article extensively). Also, they're rather hard to find. The AVO catalog is more complete anyway. Say, I don't suppose you can find Hantke G, 1951. Ubersicht uber die Vulkanische Tatigkeit 1941-1947. Bull Volc, 11: 161-208 or Hantke G, 1955. Ubersicht uber die Vulkanische Tatigkeit 1951-1953. Bull Volc, 16: 71-114, Awickert...? It's not cataloged anywhere I know of. If something comes up, do tell though. As for Shield, it's not nearly complete. Okay, it looks good so far, but I noticed that it's heavily reliant on information about hotspot shields. There are more shield volcanoes at extensional (divergent) boundaries as far as I know, and I think the article should make mention of that, too. You say that the bottom is rugged (source says dissected), but you also say it is covered by a continuous apron of material. These seem inconsistent, so I don't understand what you mean by them. My best guess is that a once-continuous apron of material is now dissected, but I couldn't find info in sources to back up my guess (could have been looking in the wrong places though). The peak of Cerro Azul volcano lies behind Quizapu crater, which was formed by eruptions during the 20th century.

Cerro Azul is an active stratovolcano in the Maule Region of central Chile, immediately south of Descabezado Grande. Part of the South Volcanic Zone of the Andes, it rises 3,788 meters (12,428 ft) and is capped by a summit crater 500 meters (1,600 ft) wide that opens to the north. Cerro Azul is responsible for South America's largest recorded eruptions, in 1846 and 1932. In 1846, an effusive eruption formed the vent at the site of present-day Quizapu Crater on the northern flank of Cerro Azul and sent lava flowing down the sides of the volcano, creating a lava field of 8–9 square kilometers (3–3.5 square miles). In 1932, one of the largest explosive eruptions of the 20th century occurred at Quizapu Crater and sent 9.5 cubic kilometers (2.3 cu mi) of ash into the atmosphere. The volcano's most recent eruption was in 1967. The South Volcanic Zone has a long history of eruptions and poses a threat to the surrounding region. Any volcanic hazard—ranging from minor ashfalls to pyroclastic flows—could pose a significant risk to humans and wildlife. Despite its current inactivity, Cerro Azul could produce another major eruption. (more...)

Hey - good to hear from you! Some field work, yes, but mostly local stuff. The less glamorous truth is that I have been doing mostly computer / electronics / lab work for the past couple of months, and have been so busy that I haven't found time to spend over here. As the projects get completed and I get a jump on the papers, I'll get more and more time to spend over here; mid-PhD crunch, I guess. Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Colorado

It was recently suggested that WikiProject Colorado, to which you are a member, may be inactive or semi-active and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there haven't been much active discussion on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. I have begun a discussion on the projects talk page to see how the members of the project feel about this suggestion. Another user has added the project to the WPUS template and I added it to the list of supported projects in the WPUS main project page but before I take any further action I wanted to contact each of the active members for their input. --Kumioko (talk) 23:14, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

Hey. I have recreated a few pages in the past several months and I just thought you would be interested in seeing them. I just recreated Mount Meager's page today and recreated Heart Peaks' page in April along with several copyedits. I recreated another article this month that is not usually my topic for major editing - Big Dan Mine. Perhaps one of the volcano articles could be taken to FAC. Oh cool - what setting is that? And is that the Landsat 7 pseudo-true-color? You can add a North arrow and scale bar in WorldWind, if you want, which is good for satellite imagery. Awickert (talk) 15:14, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

It's I-Cubed ESAT World Landsat7 Mosaic. Since I have found this setting it would be good to get realistic images for the massive Edziza and Level Mountain shields, although the Level Mountain shield is in the image I linked to above. Volcanoguy 21:17, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

If you work on the section I left on your talk page, any introductory geophysics textbook would do, for example, there are ones by Fowler, Davies, and Turcotte&Schubert. But if you think it would take you overly long to hunt that all down or don't have access to these books, I'm happy to just do it, especially as I have a 3-day weekend (yippee!) and you seem to be hosed.

I've looked over the sources for it and they look rather troubling. There's a lot of discussions of eruptive events and the like, but not so much of its actual geology. I will check out that journal article and do this. Poke me if I don't. I will be gone for a while this week, but you can poke me anyway. Basically, uplift can occur due to motions in the mantle; my concern with the paragraph is that hot things are less dense and therefore buoyant, causing a hot spot swell, but the paragraph seemed to separate those. Climate Change

Hello, I'm currently a undergraduate student and I have a project to contribute a Wikipedia page. I planned to contribute to the Wikipedia page on Climate Change. The problem is since so many of my colleagues have been updating Wikipedia articles, I have been banned from being able to edit the page. I saw that you most recently added to the Climate Change page and was wondering if you could help me. I was wondering if you would give me your opinion on whether or not my contribution would be helpful and possibly adding it for me or if you knew anyway I could edit the Climate Change page. Hey Nicole. My best guess as to why you can't edit the article is that it is "semi-protected", meaning that your account must be active for at least 4 days and have at least 10 edits in order to make edits. In the meantime, since we're close to the end of the semester, you might be able to make some changes and save them on your computer and then update the article once you are able to. Sorry about the inconvenience; sometimes articles here are semi-protected because they are frequent targets of vandalism, etc. Awickert (talk) 06:52, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

@JustBerry:, User:Vsmith is speaking of the page removal, which you indicate happened here but thankfully did not occur. I think the fundamental issue at hand is a desire to delete at will if WP:Verifiability is not addressed within the hour. This does not create an encyclopedia. Productive users do that. Let me tell you, I have created several stubs that sat, correct, but referenceless, for months. And you know, readers can see that these have no references! Sometimes I went back to them later, and sometimes other productive editors often added references later (as I have for others' unreferenced stubs). So it's a cycle of helping. Minnesota Geological Survey Bedrock Map

Hello AW! It has been a while!

Some time ago you uploaded the 2000 bedrock map, which is in the public domain. There is now a 2011 version accessed via this site and selecting the Geologic Map of Minnesota's Bedrock Geology PDF (which I'm sure you already know). Do you know if this 2011 map is in the public domain?

Hi Kablammo,

Harvey T., director of the MGS, said via email that they were free to use so long as the MGS was cited. I didn't get any clarification as to whether that would be the same as CC-BY, which I think it would be, but in his shoes, I'd be slow to reply in case there are legal reprecussions to an implicit license decision. Is his first reply good enough for WP, or should I send him another message?

Latin American 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge ‎ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon. If you would like to see this happening for Latin America, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge!
