I am a teacher, and my interest in Wikipedia - and the world outside it - is concentrated on matters to do with language and history.

For about 37 years I taught in secondary schools in England, ending with 9 years as Head of the English Department and then Head of the Arts Faculty in a Sixth Form College. I then worked in a University as an adviser to students in academic writing and, to a lesser extent, study skills. The University made me retire as I reached 65 years of age.

My approach to my fields may be coloured by background, so I add a personal note. I am a white male, of middle class origin, born and raised in Scotland of a father of lowland origin and a mother of highland stock. My secondary education was in an English 'public' school; my university was Cambridge. So I am one of the world's privileged, which, although it can feel a burden, must be one of the easier burdens in the world to bear. I am married, have 4 children, of whom I am very proud - though their success is of their mother's making, and their own - and six grandchildren.
