Sometimes those deletion tags drive away the very second edit that would have made the tag itself superfluous.I agree that Sandip Narwade would have been correctly tagged if you had waited a bit longer, but just two minutes after the article is created means we may well get no further edits from that editor. I have taken off the speedy delete tag from the article and have deleted the automatic notice that page curation places at the editor's talk page. The last thing I want to do is drive off anyone or hurt anyone's feelings. (The talk page now has another notice regarding an autobiography article, but I am not sure what that is about). At least I have reverted myself. In further contriteness, Fylbecatulous talk 21:44, 22 February 2015 (UTC) Thanks, it is a difficult one to balance, I tend to hover at the very front of the queue when I do newpage patrol, but then I'm mainly concerned about deleting attack pages as fast as they come in and I usually leave anything "goodfaith" to others. I did long ago suggest a delayed action goodfaith tag so that if there were no further edits after a certain number of hours the A1 or A3 tag would go live, and in the meantime other taggers would ignore the article but the creator would be blissfully unaware that if they didn't do a further edit in x hours the tag would be added. He called it The Song of the Jellicles. Thank you for correcting my mistake regarding the background field. I had never noticed the field before when editing other biographies, and to be honest I thought its insertion was a mistake made by the non-native English speaker who created the article. While looking into the reasons for having the field, I discovered there were 15 pages in Category:Infobox musical artist with missing or invalid Background field. I was wondering if you could explain a few things so I can learn more. When I add a URL - I see that you expand the reference with codes like Cite weburl= or Cite webtitle =, the access date, author etc. Your notes say someone about “filling in a bare reference”? i.e. the Nobody But You single & the reference to the Austin Monthly-Austin Amplified. Or wherever the URL for the Nigthowls Website is used. I see coding with the words ref name= ref name=ten after the link to the Soul Music article ref name-apple1 after the Get Up single release note I just added a reference to The Nightowls from a review that I found on this UK website – propermusic.com. I’ll take a look at how you update this. I really want to tout that it’s a UK site due to the international exposure, especially because they are playing the internationally know Austin City Limits Music Festival next week. Next I want to work on an article I found - “Music of Austin, Texas” – which I’m very into. It’s very extensive but needs some work. There are a lot of notes on things that have Wikipedia articles that are not coded as such. I want to add some information i.e. Black Fret is a 2 yr old philanthropic organization modeled on the “patronages of Opera, Museums” etc. – but with a focus on supporting musician. It’s comprised of some “movers & shakers’, connected people with deep pockets etc. & they’re building a 2 million dollar endowment. A little reading and access to a couple of tools will give you the freedom and knowledge to be the excellent editor you desire to be. I am a big fan of tools here. Much can be done manually, but for example WP:HOTCAT makes mincemeat out of adding categories for me. A. So a bane for Wikipedia is linkrot or "bare urls". Here is a link:(click through): WP:LINKROT. This explains the concept of avoiding and repairing citations with bare urls. B. Then this link that gives one all the templates WP:Citation templates, but that page is eye-wateringly complex and one must copy and paste and fill in each citation by hand. C. But there is a template tool for this that makes this almost automated. a. In your editing window there should be a toolbar with helps such as 'bold', 'signatures', 'special characters' to just click to add in your edit. At the very right end should be a choice named "cite". b. If not go to Your Preferences > Gadgets> and under gadgets is refToolbar, adds a "cite" button to the editing toolbar for quick and easy addition of commonly used citation templates. (HotCat) also lives there...) Tick the box to add refToolbar and save. This gives you the "cite" template on your toolbar. c. When you click it now a templates window will now be there (mine is on the left side) with four options. So click one the one you need (probably for you 'cite web' or 'cite news') and click 'show extra fields'. Just fill in the fields you want by copy/paste; preview and insert into article.The magic is done :) D. Here now is the most amazing news of all. Go to the 'Revision History' of The Nightowls and where I changed the last citation format, my edit summary says "Filled in 1 bare reference(s) with ReFill" Click on Refill (in my edit summary if you want) and you will have info on that tool. There is a solf-direct to https://tools.wmflabs.org/refill/, the tool itself. This is how one can repair in an instant an already bare url (if the editor has put in enough fields). It will even group the like references under the same name for you. I keep Refill bookmarked https://tools.wmflabs.org/refill/. a. So on the reFill tool enter The Nightowls in the 'page name'; 'en' is already default for English Wikipedia. b. Untick the choice for "Do not add access dates' that is ticked by default.That way you also get the access date in your citation and if it is now a 404 error reFill will leave it out. You only have one bare link in your article but the tool will repair twenty or more all at once. c. So I already tested the one for your last citation. Sure enough, it is a good reference...so if you want to give this a try I will leave it for you to practise. Your new reference in the reFill tool will be in yellow and blue and have a button that says 'preview/save on wiki' and choosing that will take you back to your edit window where you can preview and save, same as all other edits. Your guidance on my questions is very helpful - it tells me what I need to focus on especially the tools that are available to use for learning how to do this. Until it is properly formatted with the publisher, author, article title and dates, it really has no meaning. This was part of the problem with the article in the beginning. If you look back in the history, no one could tell that many of the sources were good when they were just bare links to their websites. I looked at the detailed information about the pics & it has a bunch of pixel sizes - but I don't see how they relate to the 275px or 400px? Thanks to your previous guidance, I was able to add a new URL and run the refill template to fix it. As you saw, the band is doing very well. I went to see them at ACL & they had a large enthusiastic crowd. They've extended their tour & have been picked for SXSW again. That's a huge deal - over 8,000 artist apply from around the world & only 2,000 get selected. I know you like cat pictures – I have one I want to send you. Maybe I can use this as a test to see if I understand the “px” question. I’m having trouble even finding this pic to look at the details. Yes, I upgraded the article class and importance ratings on their talk page for the Musicians WikiProject workgroup and added them to another WikiProject. The pixels (px) part of the formatting give the image a size on the article page. I originally increased the size for the infobox one so it would be bigger, since that image appears dark unless you click through to see the entire image. (that is what the thumbnail setting does) So for the first one in the member section from 2014, making the size 275px (same as infobox) gave it a nice look in that section, not too small, not too overbearing. But your new image that I just added (performing at ACL 2015) was much too small at 275 px. It was the size of a postage stamp and the band looked lost in the woods. So I increased it to 400px so it would fill more of the section. I almost made it 425px. Test it yourself in "show preview" and if you like it a bit larger change it to 425px. 2. Finding your images on Commons. The last you added you placed in a category for "musicians from Texas". Hurray! I added it to two more categories and also added your earlier ones to three. When they become important enough and you have enough images, the band name can have its own category. (Like R.E.M. or Earth, Wind & Fire). The categories is how anyone hunts down an image on commons so the more categories the better. My cat Fearless is in eight categories :)) So you have a user page, talk page and contributions page on Commons just like here. Go to one of your description pages on Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nightowls_BOTG.JPG and there is a section named "file history". The fifth box in the row will say "user" You have a talk page and a contribution page with content. Click through to your contributions and voila! there are your four images safe for you to see and edit. I see a cat image but I am not going to look. You may surprise me. I tried using various combinations for the pic like this Natasha _super_model_cat.XXX|thumb|various px|put left to align. I didn't how to write this without it picking up the coding or the pic file name showing with no image (is there a way to do this?) - so i left off the words FILE, jpg & brackets. I wanted to say "My cat Natasha as a young super model wanna be". Maybe you can edit it & show me what I should have done? Anyway it's a picture of Natasha - my beautiful Seal Point Siamese cat I had in NYC. She’s 4 in this picture & was modeling a friend’s fish charm bracelet. It’s not a great pic – but since I’ve moved here 2 yrs – I have boxes full of pictures – this one of the few I had sitting around. She passed away in 2013 at the ripe old age of 20. On The Nightowls – Ryan said to really thank you for all the work you’ve done on their article. I really want to thank you in general for all your help & guidance. As a newbie I find the world of Wikipedia overwhelming. I’m cutting my teeth on this article and gaining confidence in editing. I consider you a mentor. I’m looking at the page statistics & it had a big spike in views the last couple of days since the SXSW announcement. I try to research things 1st but it’s so hard to navigate & even find where to look at information. For instance on the ACL picture. As you saw I tried adding it, but it wasn’t coming out, so I reversed it. Then thankfully you added it. Trying to understand, I studied the 2 pics in the article, not knowing what the “px” was – Thinking it had something to do with the pixel - I studied the 2 pictures & tried to figure out the relationship. As I usually do, I had trouble trying to even find help & then I get lost in the Wikipedia world. So I turned to you to ask more about this subject. I hope you don’t mind. My take away on this is that the px is actually the size of the display & has nothing to do with the pixels? But then my research gives me another question. On the ACL there are several “other resolutions” listed, I clicked on each one to to see the differences – does that mean you can modify the pixels? Also on your last point about watching the pics. I know about watching an article – but I couldn’t find “watch” to click on when viewing the pic. Today I got lost in the Wikipedia world of Projects and Categories. It’s easy to do. I’d looked at Musician’s project article when you 1st started editing The Nightowls and was very impressed with what the group does. Yesterday I looked at what “Class C – Mid Level Musicians” was about – I’m very pleased and honored that you that deemed them worthy of this category. I also looked at the Rhythm & Blues project. I reviewed their template & standards for the articles. Looking at back at your early edits, I didn’t understand at the time, but I remember you making edits to follow “standard musical artist articles”. I now understand what you were doing. I saw on that project that it was assessed on 10/22. It looks like a “bot” did it. It was given a quality of “Unassessed Class” and the importance as “Unknown Class” not sure exactly what this means. Since it was a bot, I assume no person looked at it. It was added to the 4,567 articles with this class. But at least it wasn’t flagged as anything bad. Thanks again for everything. Resolution: Yes, the pixel format for our articles is just to size for style in a particular article. As I said, your new image in The Nightowls could be reformatted to 425. The thumbnail setting allows one to click through and see the close-up version. If you don't format as a thumbnail, then images appear as my two black and while cats at the top of this talk page. They just sit there flat and do not have captions either. On Commons; I iz pretty much a newbie, but I believe the different resolutions are automatically created in the process of uploading. One can click and view each resolution. Of course, the 1,280 × 538 pixels one has the best detail and clarity. Just as an aside comment, one may sometimes use a low-resolution image of a non-free image file to illustrate an article..https://wiki.alquds.edu/?query=File:Bellbookandcandleposter.jpg, for example. 2. Bots and WikiProjects: (short version). A bot noticed that I had added the template for the R&B and Soul WikiProject. When it went to the article it had to assign as "Unassessed" because I deferred assigning class and importance. It appears the bot runs every day and the project seems quite active and since the article got listed on their project page perhaps someone will assign ratings soon. It is kinda proper to let those in a Project do their own assessments. I could have instructed the bot to "auto assess" the class parameter, but it does not assign importance and a human still needs to check the class rating: https://wiki.alquds.edu/?query=Wikipedia:Types_of_bots#WikiProject_tagging_and_auto-assessment_bots (lol). If someone does not come along in a while I can do the ratings. I want to add more ref around their Good as Gold Album which had lots of press at the time & currently just says they released the album. They are going on their Dec tour through the SE next week & during that time will be recording a new EP at Al Green's studio in Memphis. & look for a major label. Which is why I want to beef up their 1st album. When the EP comes out I'm going to break up the history into sections for each album. I'm working on an article for another Austin band. Now that I have a better idea of what a standard musician article should look like, I'm going to draft it in a Word doc before adding it to Wikipedia. When I put the various music categories - I know it will pop up as a new one, so I want it to be complete as possible. Next I'm going to create one for Black Fret - a 2 yr old organization established to be a Patron of the Austin music scene - modeled on the concept of Patron groups that support museums, symphonies etc. It has 1,300 members - all movers & shakers in Austin with many ties to corps here like Dell. They're building a 2 million dollar endowment to give grants to musicians. They also promote bands with showcases & through social media. I can't afford to join - their most basic ann membership is $1,500 and they also do lots of fundraising events & members contribute a lot more $. However I can help them as a volunteer - especially building articles on Austin Bands. The Nightowls were one of the 10 grant nominees this year & they're going to award $100,000 in various size grants at their annual ball this friday. They're a really great org & something sorely needed for Austin & they really deserve an article. I'll have to look at other charities to see how they are formatted. See Special:NewPagesFeed ツ Take a peek but don't let it scare you. It shows how many edits you have made and any glaring issues with your article wll show up in red. So the more complete it is, the less likely it will be pounced upon for quick deletion or WP:AfD. It is still better to just publish into Wikipedia instead of trying to get it accepted though Wikipedia:Articles for creation. That process can break one's heart. They have a backlog like crazy and if you get a very critical reviewer... I patrol pages on the new pages feed and many patrollers are generous and patient and will help and just give you the green check. This is why I only create new articles on Simple Wikipedia. I have patroller rights there so my articles are automatically accepted and I also patrol new pages of other editors.
