Starting off[edit]

Hello SoyokoAnis, we'll use this page for your mentorship to keep things organized and in one place. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist (I have done so as well). If you have any questions at any time, you are more than welcome to post them here or on my talk page.

A couple instructions to start off:

  1. Fully disable RedWarn, Twinkle, and any other semi-automated tools, user scripts, or gadgets that you have installed, and confirm that you have done so. Your overuse of these tools is largely what led to your block in the first place, so it's important to remove the temptation.
  2. Confirm that you understand the terms of this mentorship — that you agree to focus exclusively on article creation and expansion for an indefinite period of time, until I or another experienced editor confirm that you are ready for more advanced areas of the project; that you understand that I (and others) will be keeping a close eye on your contributions; and that any breaches of the terms, as interpreted by me or an administrator, will result in the immediate restoration of your sitewide block.
  3. On a lighter note, find an article that you would like to create or expand (don't actually start writing anything until I give the green light, though). This can either be an article that does not yet exist on Wikipedia, or a super-short "stub" article (check out Category:Top-level stub categories for a directory of stubs). If you come up with any ideas, post them here.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. DanCherek (talk) 16:08, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

Article[edit]

 – DanCherek (talk) 22:16, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello, DanCherek. I have followed all three steps and the article I want to write about is a video game I have been playing recently called People Playground. Unfortunately, there are not many sources on it and it has failed many times in draft, however that is the only thing I am interested in writing at the moment. SoyokoAnis - talk 21:56, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

@SoyokoAnis: Great, thanks for doing that. (I've moved your post to this main page so we don't have two parallel discussion pages at the same time.) So I think you're right — I just did a quick search of People Playground and also was not able to locate reliable, independent sources that cover it in detail. Unfortunately, the multiple draft rejections likely mean that at this time, the game doesn't meet Wikipedia's general notability guideline, which requires "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject".
For these reasons, it won't be productive to work on a draft of People Playground, as it will almost certainly be declined again. There are over a thousand video game–related stubs at Category:Video game stubs, do any of these catch your interest? These are more likely (but not guaranteed) to be notable. A condition of your unblock was that you would work on article writing, so we do want to find something that you would enjoy working on while also meeting the notability guidelines. Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 22:16, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
@DanCherek: I think Episode would be a good article. SoyokoAnis - talk 12:33, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
It would be worthwhile to skim over MOS:VG, particularly the "Layout" and "Section-specific advice" sections. -- ferret (talk) 12:38, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

ferret, okay. I read it. Thank you, I believe because I did not read it an article I made got deleted. SoyokoAnis - talk 15:06, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

@SoyokoAnis: This article seems like a great choice. We'll be referring to MOS:VG a lot as you develop. To start off, please follow all of these steps carefully (adapted from {{2nd chance}}).
  1. Click the Edit tab at the top of Episode (video game) and copy the prose from that article. However:
    • do not copy the infobox from the start of the article (i.e., markup like this: {{infobox video game|...}})
    • do not copy the page's categories from the bottom of the page (i.e., markup like this: [[Category:2010s interactive fiction]])
    • do not copy the stub tag from the bottom of the page (i.e., markup like this: {{video-game-stubstub}})
  2. Click User:SoyokoAnis/Episode (video game), which is currently a red link, and paste the copied content but do not save yet
  3. Place your cursor in the edit summary box and paste the following edit summary (this is required for mandatory copyright attribution): "Copied content from [[Episode (video game)]]; see that article's history for attribution."
  4. You can now save the page.
You can also start looking for additional sources that will be helpful for writing various sections of the article. Let me know when you've created the draft, we'll start to build specific sections soon. DanCherek (talk) 15:17, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
DanCherek, I created the page and followed the instructions. SoyokoAnis - talk 16:07, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
Great. There are several sections at WP:VGLAYOUT that will be needed for this article; I think the most important ones for now are "Gameplay" (how the game works), "Development" (history of the game), and "Reception" (what critics thought of the game). We'll have to hit all of these eventually — is there one in particular that you'd like to start out with? Note that all of them will require research and referencing reliable, published sources, rather than any personal experiences you've had with the game. DanCherek (talk) 16:14, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
DanCherek We can begin with Gameplay. SoyokoAnis - talk 12:26, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
Sounds good! DanCherek (talk) 14:19, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

Gameplay section[edit]

Go ahead and create the "Gameplay" section in your draft article and review the writing tips at WP:VG/LEAD#Gameplay. In case you didn't know about it, there is a list of video game–related Featured Articles at WP:FA#Video games, and many of these contain examples of well-written Gameplay sections. Go ahead and start writing about how the game works, and be sure to support what you write with reliable sources. If you are unsure about whether a source is reliable, you can post here. See WP:REFB for a guide to referencing for beginners. Let me know if you have any questions, as I'm not sure what you are or aren't familiar with. It's not too hard once you get the hang of it! DanCherek (talk) 14:19, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

WP:VG maintains a list of vetted reliable sources, as well as a custom Google search to check them, at WP:VG/RS. -- ferret (talk) 14:23, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
