New Amsterdam[edit]

The article for New Amsterdam says the city used to be called Altena, but this article doesn't mention it. What should it be? --Awiseman 14:12, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse me but what is the deal with having so much "New Netherland" info at the bottom left? Shouldn't we erase that, it has nothing to do with Wilmington, DE and appears to be there by mistake? (Jschreib 02:46, 21 April 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Image[edit]

Not trying to be mean, but currently this has one of the worst city photos I've ever seen on Wikipedia. Requesting a Wilmington local go downtown and snap at least an in-focus shot that's not taken from behind a utility pole. --Oakshade 23:16, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Persons[edit]

Hasn't this gotten out of hand?! Shouldn't the requirements be either born in the city, or lived in the city for more than 15 years. Being born in Talleyville or Brandywine Hundred shouldn't be included, and neither should living here for a year. Neighborhood Links[edit]

I removed the link for Christina Landing from the Southbridge neighborhood. All other neighborhood links lead to the actual neighborhood or neighborhood association, while Christina Landing is a portion of the Southbridge neighborhood.--Littledrummrboy 15:13, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Suburban neighborhoods tend to be defined by a developer's construction project while city neighborhoods tend to have a more complex history. There are exceptions on both sides of course, Riverside and Wawaset Park are developments while Stanton and Bellefonte both have histories as towns.
Christina Landing is indeed a development adjacent to the existing neighborhood of Southbridge and Justison Landing is adjacent to Browntown. But neither was built where housing had existed prior and I'm not sure the residents of those developments considder themselves part of those older neighborhoods. Due to the size of these developments, I'm inclined to add them as neighborhoods.

City Geobox in Upper Right[edit]

Under alternative names it lists Fort Christina (a specific location within the city) and New Sweden (an area that included much more than Wilmington.) Neither of these are alternate names so I think they should be removed. And for category, it doesn't list a category but a list of Delaware cities. I'd like to switch that to the Wilmington, DE Cat. Wilmington City[edit]

Although many area residents consider themselves to live in Wilmington, they do live either in New Castle County, or in the surrounding area. Just because the Zip code lists Wilmington doesn't mean they are in the city of Wilmington.

Wilmington is the city surrounded by the city limits, and that's all. If somebody wants to start a page on the Wilmington-Newark CSA, go right ahead, but posting crime rates on "Wilmington," and then noting the rates are for New Castle County, De, Cecil County, MD, and Salem Co, NJ. is incorrect, however good the intention. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Joe84323 (talk • contribs) 03:09, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I could not find any citation for the city of Wilmington crime rates as originally listed in the article; the closest the FBI had were crime rates for the Wilmington census area (which includes NCC, Cecil COunty =, MD, and Salem County, NJ. If someone can find crime rates for the city of Wilmington only, please resurrect this section.Wkharrisjr (talk) 12:03, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, if only it were that simple. Some people in Wilmington live in incorporated Wilmington and some live in unincorporated Wilmington and most are fine not making much of a distinction. The article should do a better job of distinguishing that there is a city government named "Wilmington" and a broader area around it coincidentally called "Wilmington" as well as a still broader CSA that expands into other municipalities and states. 806 West Street on National Register of Historic Places?[edit]

Mystery NRHP site at 806 West Street

I like to take photos of NRHPs. While walking along West Street I saw this striking building at 806 and took the photo. Only then did I notice the NRHP plaque near the door. Nevertheless I can't find any record of this as being on the NRHP.. Can anybody identify this building and why it has the plaque? Google Streetview. Hmm, I thought it was the Delaware blind center but that's at the other end of the block. County property records indicate it was built in 1899 and the past owners don't jump out at me. It doesn't look like it would be an easy building to move and the city typically sends relocated buildings to Willingtown Square. If it is a legitimate plaque, it was either a site recently added to the registry that does not appear on their website yet (a frustrating issue for me) or a deleted site. Or the sign is invalid. I reposted your question Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#Mystery Plaque in Wilmington, Delaware to rule out new/delisted sites. Per the conversation on the NRHP talk page, it's the northernmost house in the Quaker Hill National Register district. I'm pretty familiar with Wilmington buildings but, when it comes to the actual NRHP listings, that group is pretty hard core but in a good way.RevelationDirect (talk) 01:18, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Crime section?[edit]

I'm also curious as to why there's no mention of the Hale shooting. It was pretty infamous when William Brown got the city sued for wrongful death. I-495 ?[edit]

I have an issue with this:

"Interstate 95, which splits Wilmington roughly into eastern and western halves, provides access to major markets in the Northeast and nationwide, as does Interstate 495 just east of the city, and I-295 south of the city, crossing the Delaware River into New Jersey."

495 is a bypass route that goes around Wilmington starting a few miles south of the city and rejoins right before the Pennsylvania border. It's not possible to access it directly from the city and there is no access from 95 south - you have to go WAY out of your way to get to 495 from Wilmington, and it doesn't really go anywhere that you can't get to faster with local roads or via 95. I think the intent was to point out that 495 runs east of the city, but it most certainly does NOT "provide access to major markets" from Wilmington as the current wording indicates. Maybe I'm just being picky, but I can't see an argument for the way it's worded now being anything but inaccurate. Ahp378 (talk) 15:28, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Neighborhood Name Change: The Flats vs Woodlawn[edit]

So the Wikipedia article has the neighborhood listed as Woodlawn, but news articles (for example the source I cited adding information) list the neighborhood as being named The Flats (after the name of apartment buildings in Europe) and only having been developed by the Woodlawn Co, now the Woodlawn Trustees. Bing Maps show the neighborhood as The Flats, and for some reason no matter which way I turn and zoom in/out Google doesn't show any neighborhood name on the maps unless you actually search for The Flats at which point the neighborhood outline appears. I say all this to back up my final piece of evidence, the official neighborhood map on the City of Wilmington website (http://www.ci.wilmington.de.us/docs/88/WilmingtonNeighborhoods.pdf) lists the neighborhood as Flats. Hence, I am changing the name on the neighborhoods section and adding Justison Landing which the city map also lists as a recognized neighborhood. Merge Proposal - Greenband, Delaware[edit]

I propose that Greenband, Delaware be merged into Wilmington, Delaware. There is no substantive widespread coverage of "Greenband" (which is actually Greenbank, but there is no widespread coverage there either) and WP:NPLACE states that in order for larger neighborhoods to be kept in standalone articles, they must have "widespread verifiable use". As the article states this is a neighborhood in Wilmington, it should be merged and the author and interested parties should be able to continue the work within the scope of the Wilmington, Delaware article.
